Abstract:The chemistry of lanthanides (Ln = La-Lu) is dominated by the low-valent +3 or +2 oxidation state because of the chemical inertness of the valence 4f electrons. The highest known oxidation state of the whole lanthanide series is +4 for Ce, Pr, Nd, Tb, and Dy. We report the formation of the lanthanide oxide species PrO4 and PrO2+ complexes in the gas phase and in a solid noble-gas matrix. Combined infrared spectroscopic and advanced quantum chemistry studies show that these species have the unprecedented Pr-V oxidation state, thus demonstrating that the pentavalent state is viable for lanthanide elements in a suitable coordination environment.

Abstract:Seven lanthanide complexes [Ln(OPPh3)3(NO3)3] (1–3) (OPPh3 = triphenylphosphine oxide, Ln = Nd, Sm, Gd), [Dy(OPPh3)4(NO3)2](NO3) (4), [Ln(OPPh3)3(NO3)3]2 (5–7) (Ln = Pr, Eu, Gd) were synthesized by the reactions of different lanthanide salts and OPPh3 ligand in the air. These complexes were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, elemental analysis, IR and fluorescence spectra. Structure analysis shows that complexes 1–4 are mononuclear complexes formed by OPPh3 ligands and nitrates. The asymmetric units of complexes 5–7 consist of two crystallographic-separate molecules. Complex 1 is self-assembled to construct a 2D layer-structure of (4,4) net topology by hydrogen bond interactions. The other complexes show a 1D chain-like structure that was assembled by OPPh3 ligands and nitrate ions through C–H···O interactions. Solid emission spectra of compounds 4 and 6 are assigned to the characteristic fluorescence of Tb3+ (λem = 480, 574 nm) and Eu3+ (λem = 552, 593, 619, 668 nm).

Abstract:Lanthanide oxo compounds are of vital importance in lanthanide chemistry, as well as in environmental and materials sciences. Praseodymium, as an exceptional element in lanthanides which can form a +V formal oxidation state (OSf) besides the dominant +III among the 4f-block element, displays the significant participation of the Pr 4f orbitals in bonding interactions which is commonly crucial in stabilizing the high oxidation state of Pr in PrO2+ and NPrO species. Here, we report a systematic theoretical study on the structures and stabilities of a series of XPrO (X: B, Al, C, Si, N, P, As, O, S, F, Cl) compounds along with [XPrO]+ cation (X: O, S) and [X3PrO] complexes (X: F and Cl). This work reveals that Pr is able to achieve the lowest and highest OSf and the OSf exhibits periodic variation from +I in BOPr and AlOPr to +II in SiOPr to +III in CPrO, FPrO, ClPrO and AsPrO to +IV in OPrO and SPrO and even to +V in NPrO, [OPrO]+, [SPrO]+, F3PrO and Cl3PrO. We found that the molecular structures are correlated to the Pr oxidation state due to the highly important 4f orbital in the chemical bonding of the high oxidation state compounds. Thus, not only the electronegativity of the ligand but also the quasi-degenerate Pr valence 4f orbitals, namely energetic covalency, control the oxidation state and play a fundamental role in affecting the electronic structural stability of Pr(v) compounds as well. This work demonstrates the structurally directing role of the f-orbital in the formation of the linear structure and is constructive for achieving the higher oxidation state of a given element by tuning the ligand.

Abstract:Three new lanthanide-nitronyl nitroxide radical complexes were successfully synthesized with the formula of [Ln(hfac)3 (PyNONIT)2] (Ln=Dy (1), Tm (2), Ho (3)). All the complexes were isostructural and crystallized inC2/c space group, in which the central metal ions were eight-coordinated in slightly distorted square antiprism coordination geometries (D4d symmetry). Magnetic studies indicated the existence of antiferromagnetic interaction in complexes1–3.

Abstract:The imidophosphorane ligand, [NPtBu3]– (tBu = tert-butyl), enables isolation of a pseudo-tetrahedral, tetravalent praseodymium complex, [Pr4+(NPtBu3)4] (1-Pr), which is characterized by a suite of physical characterization methods including single-crystal X-ray diffraction, electron paramagnetic resonance, and L3-edge X-ray near-edge spectroscopies. Variable-temperature direct-current magnetic susceptibility data, supported by multiconfigurational quantum chemical calculations, demonstrate that the electronic structure diverges from the isoelectronic Ce3+ analogue, driven by increased crystal field. The four-coordinate environment around Pr4+ in 1-Pr, which is unparalleled in reported extended solid systems, provides a unique opportunity to study the interplay between crystal field splitting and spin-orbit coupling in a molecular tetravalent lanthanide within a pseudo-tetrahedral coordination geometry.

Abstract:A series of lanthanide nitrilotriacetates, [Ln(NTA)(H2O)] (where, Ln=Pr (1), Sm (2), Eu (3), Gd (4)), have been prepared in aqueous solution through hydrothermal synthesis. Their crystal structures have been determined by X-ray diffraction, of which structure of 1 containing the nine-coordinated Pr atom is a 3D network and structures of 2, 3 and 4 containing the eight-coordinated lanthanides, as isomorphous, are novel double layers. A fluorescence emission spectra of compound 3 was observed.

Abstract:A novel polymeric Pr(III) complex with a new double betaine, namely [{Pr(L 1 ) 1.5 (H 2 O) 2 } n ][ClOli4]3 n · n H 2 O ( 1 ) (L 1 = 1,4-diazoniobicyclo[2,2,2]octane-1,4-dipropionate), has been synthesized and characterized by X-ray analysis. In the title complex, the Pr(III) atom is nine-coordinated by seven oxygen atoms from five L 1 ligands and two aqua ligands. Each pair of adjacent praseodymium(III) atoms is linked by a pair of μ 3 chelating and bridging carboxylate groups, thus forming an infinite metal···metal chain running parallel to the a direction, and such chains are cross-linked by flexible backbones of L 1 ligands into a three-dimensional network with the perchlorate anions and lattice water molecules accommodated in the interstitial space. The title complex crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P 2 1 / n with a = 8.085(2), b = 14.316(3), c = 29.775(6) Å, β = 103.04(3)° and Z = 4.

Abstract:The pentavalent oxidation state of praseodymium – a long-sought connection between lanthanide, early-transition, and actinide metal redox chemistries – has only been identified in gas-phase or matrix isolation environments. We report the low-temperature characterization of a molecular praseodymium complex in the formal +5 oxidation state, [Pr5+(NP(tBu3)4][X–] (where tBu = tert-butyl and X– = tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)borate or hexafluorophosphate). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction, solution-state spectroscopic, solution magnetometric, density functional theory, and multireference wavefunction-based methods indicate a highly multiconfigurational, singlet ground state. An inverted ligand field drives this unique electronic structure, which establishes a critical link in understanding the bonding of high-valent metal complexes across the periodic table.

Abstract:Coordination complexes of lanthanide metals with tris-1-naphthylphosphine oxide (Nap3PO, L) have not been previously reported in the literature. We describe here the formation of lanthanide(III) nitrate complexes Ln(NO3)3L4 (Ln = Eu to Lu) and the structures of [Ln(NO3)3L2]·2L (Ln = Eu, Dy, Ho, Er) and L. The core structure of the complexes is an eight-coordinate [Ln(NO3)3L2] with the third and fourth ligands H-bonded via their oxygen atoms to one of the naphthyl rings. The structures are compared with those of the analogous complexes of triphenylphosphine oxide and show that the Ln-O(P) bond in the Nap3PO complexes is slightly longer than expected on the basis of differences in coordination numbers. The reaction solutions, investigated by 31P and 13C NMR spectroscopy in CD3CN, show that coordination of L occurs across the lanthanide series, even though complexes can only be isolated from Eu onwards. Analysis of the 31P NMR paramagnetic shifts shows that there is a break in the solution structures with a difference between the lighter lanthanides (La–Eu) and heavier metals (Tb–Lu) which implies a minor difference in structures. The isolated complexes are very poorly soluble, but in CDCl3, NMR measurements show dissociation into [Ln(NO3)3L2] and 2L occurs.

Abstract:The actinide–halogen complexes (AnO2X42–, X = Cl, Br, and I) are the simplest and most representative compounds for studying the bonding nature of actinides with ligands. In this work, we attempted to synthesize the crystals of NpO2X42– (X = Cl, Br, and I). The crystals of NpO2Cl42– and NpO2Br42– were successfully synthesized, in which the structure of NpO2Br42– was obtained for the first time. The crystal of NpO2I42– could not be obtained due to the rapid reduction of Np(VI) to Np(V) by I–. The molecular structures of NpO2Cl42– and NpO2Br42– were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and infrared, Raman, and UV–Vis–NIR absorption spectroscopy. The complexes of NpO2X42– (X = Cl, Br, and I) were also investigated by density functional theory calculations, and the calculated vibration frequencies and absorption features were comparable to the experimental results. Both the experimental results and theoretical calculations demonstrate the strengthened Np–O bonds and the weakened Np–X bonds across the NpO2X42– series; however, the population analysis on the frontier molecular orbitals (MOs) of NpO2X42– indicates a slight reduction in the Np–O bonding covalency and an enhancement in the Np–X bonding covalency from NpO2Cl42– to NpO2I42–. Results in this work have enriched the crystal database of the AnO2X42– family and provided insights into the bonding nature in the actinide complexes with soft- and hard-donor ligands.

Abstract:A series of near-infrared (NIR) luminescent complexes Ln(dbm)3L (Ln=Ho, Pr) were firstly synthesized and their elemental analyses, crystal structures, fluorescence spectra and thermogravimetric analyses were successfully investigated. After ligand-mediated excitation of the complexes, they all show the characteristic NIR luminescence of the corresponding Ln3+ ions.

Abstract:Four ternary complexes Ln1 and Ln2 (Ln=Ho and Pr) were synthesized, with 4,4,5,5,6,6,6-heptafluoro-1-(2-thienyl)hexane-1,3-dione and 4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,9,9,10,10,10-pentadecafluoro-1-(naphthalen-2-yl)decane-1,3-dione served as main sensitizers, respectively. Their elemental analyses, Fourier Transform Infrared spectra, and luminescent properties were investigated. The complexes all show the characteristic near-infrared luminescence of corresponding Ln3+ ions, via an antenna effect. Furthermore, the influence of ligands structure on the luminescence behavior of complexes is discussed and it is believed that the fluorinated alkyl chains of ligands affect the energy transfer in complexes.

Abstract:Nitridophosphates, with their primary structural motif of isolated or condensed PN4 tetrahedra, meet many requirements for high performance materials. Their properties are associated with their structural diversity, which is mainly limited by this specific building block. Herein, we present the alkaline earth metal nitridophosphate oxide Ba3[PN3]O featuring a trigonal planar [PN3]4– anion. Ba3[PN3]O was obtained using a hot isostatic press by medium-pressure high-temperature synthesis (MP/HT) at 200 MPa and 880 °C. The crystal structure was solved and refined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data in space group R-3c (no.167) and confirmed by SEM-EDX, magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR, vibrational spectroscopy (Raman, IR) and low-cost crystallographic calculations (LCC). MP/HT synthesis reveals great potential by extending the structural chemistry of P to include trigonal planar [PN3]4– motifs.

Abstract:In the title complex, {[Pr(C2O4)1.5(H2O)2]·H2O}n, the PrIII ion, which lies on a crystallographic inversion centre, is coordinated by seven O atoms from four oxalate ligands and two O atoms from two water ligands; further Pr—O coordination from tetradentate oxalate ligands forms a three-dimensional structure. The compound crystallized as a monohydrate, the water molecule occupying space in small voids and being secured by O—H...O hydrogen bonding as an acceptor from ligand water H atoms and as a donor to oxalate O-acceptor sites.

Abstract:Two heterodimetallic complexes of formulae [LCo(AcO)(2)Pr(NO3)(2)] and [LCo(AcO)(2)Nd(NO3)(2)] (H2L=N,N'-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene) propane-1,2-diamine) have been synthesised and structurally characterised. The cobalt(III) ion shows a slightly distorted octahedral geometry in which the equatorial plane is formed by the N2O2 set of the Salen-type Schiff base, and the axial positions are occupied by two oxygen atoms from both acetate groups. The praseodymium(III) and neodymium (III) ions are decacoordinated. In addition to the four oxygen atoms of the Schiff base, the rare earth ions coordinate two bidentate nitrate groups and two oxygen atoms of the acetate groups. The metal ions are bridged by both the phenolate oxygens and the acetate groups. The chi T-M values observed for the complexes are lower than the free-ion approximation of Pr-III and Nd-III ions, although the cobalt(III) is diamagnetic.

Abstract:A family of polyoxometalate compounds based on Preyssler anions and lanthanide cations, K5Na5[{Pr-4(H2O)(12)(pydc)(4)}{Na(H2O)P5W30O110}]center dot 46H(2)O (1, H(2)pydc = pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid), Na-7[{Pr-4(H2O)(20)(pydc)(2)(Ac)}{Na(H2O)P5W30O110}]center dot 23H(2)O (2), and Na10H2 [{Ln(2)(H2O)(10)(pydc)(2)}-{ Na(H2O)P5W30O110}]center dot XH2O (Ln = Sm 3, Eu 4, Gd 5; X = 11 for 3 and 5, 13 for 4), have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound 1 exhibits a two-dimensional honeycomb layer which is built up from unique {Pr-4} metallacycles and Preyssler anions. Remarkably, the strong involvement of the sodium countercations leads to the formation of a unique three-dimensional open architecture with one-dimensional channels. The 2D grid layer of compound 2 is constructed by the longest currently known rare-earth metal clusters {Pr-8} and Preyssler anions. Isostructural compounds 3, 4, and 5, obtained by introduction of the intermediate lanthanide ions into the above reaction system, exhibit bisupporting [{Ln(2)(H2O)(10)(pydc)(2)}{Na(H2O)P5W30O110}](12)- polyoxometalate cluster structures. The magnetic properties of compounds 1 and 2 and the luminescent properties of compounds 3 and 4 are discussed in this paper.

Abstract:Reaction of N,N '-diisopropylcarbodiimide ((PrN)-Pr-i=C=(NPr)-Pr-i) with H2N(CH2)(3)NH2 and (C5H5)(3)Ln, give (C5H5)(2)Ln[H2N(CH2)(3) N=C((NHPr)-Pr-i) (NPr)-Pr-i)] in high yields, indicating that the N-H bonds of one NH2 group readily add to the C=N double bonds of carbodiimide and one cyclopentadienyl group is eliminated to construct a novel amino-tethered guanidinate anionic ligand [H2N(CH2)(3)N=C((NHPr)-Pr-i)(NPr)-Pr-i)](-).
