Abstract:Perovskite oxides have attracted much attention owing to their excellent physical properties, such as piezoelectricity, ferroelectricity, and ferromagnetism. Moreover, these properties can be strongly affected and regulated by the doping strategy. In this work, Er3+ doped single crystal KNbO3 nanosheets were successfully synthesized via a solvothermal method. XRD analysis indicated that Er3+ firstly substituted into the B site (Nb5+) and then A site (K+) in the ABO(3) perovskite structure with the further increasing content of Er3+. The orthorhombic structure of the pure KNbO3 and Er3+ doped KNbO3 was proved in terms of the Raman spectra. The SEM observation demonstrated that the size of the asobtained nanosheets was about 70 nm in thickness and 3 mm in diameter. The single crystal structure state of the as-obtained products was confirmed by HRTEM. Furthermore, the growth mechanism of Er3+ doped KNbO3 nanosheets was rationally elaborated and proposed. The as-obtained Er3+ doped KNbO3 nanosheets exhibited excellent up-conversion (UC) photoluminescence (PL) properties with a strong green emission and a weak red emission. The maximum emission intensity of the UC PL spectrum was achieved with 0.4 mol% of Er3+ doped. To conclude, the as-synthesized Er3+ doped KNbO3 nanosheets could be a potential candidate for the development of multifunctional devices, by introducing PL properties to piezoelectric KNbO3 materials.

Abstract:Yb/Er doped hexagonal beta-NaLnF(4) (Ln = Gd, Y, Lu) are regarded as the most efficient green upconversion (UC) materials. Unfortunately, beta-NaLnF(4) is quite difficult to grow as monocrystal owing to cubic-to-hexagonal phase transition during cooling. As an alternative, herein a nanocrystallization controllable strategy to synthesize monodisperse whole-family beta-NaLnF(4) (from NaLaF4 to NaLuF4) embedded bulky glass ceramics is reported. A series of structural and spectroscopic characterizations indicate that Na content and Al/Si ratio are the most important factors to determine phase-selective NaLnF(4) crystallization in the aluminosilicate oxyfluoride glasses. Impressively, such nanocomposites are evidenced to be ideal hosts for upconversion luminescence of Yb3+/Er3+ dopants and as the proof-of-concept experiments, their applications in a random laser and incoherent LED-excitable upconverting device as emitting media are demonstrated. It is expected that this study will provide a deep understanding for controllable crystallization in glass and extend the practical applications of glass ceramics in optoelectronic fields.
Chemical Combustion Synthesis and Up-Conversion Properties of Er3+ Doped Yb3Al5O12 Powder

Abstract:Er3+ doped Yb3Al5O12 powder has been prepared by chemical combustion and their structural and optical properties are determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and up-conversion (UC) spectra. XRD and TEM show that the powder is composed of a highly crystalline garnet phase. When excited by a 980nm laser diode, the Er3+ doped Yb3Al5O12 powder shows an intense red UC fluorescent band that can be assigned to the transition 4F9/2→4I15/2 of Er3+ and a relatively weak green one corresponding to 2H11/2/4S3/2→4I15/2 in the UC spectra. The intensity ratio of the red to green emission is enhanced due to Li+ incorporation. This can be attributed to the modification of local crystal fields around the rare-earth ions. Our results suggest that rare-earth doped alumina nanomaterials have potential applications in flat-panel displays and multicolor fluorescent labels.
Synthesis of Er3+ doped KNbO3 nanocrystals and nanoceramics with outstanding up-conversion luminescence behaviors

Abstract:Rare earth doped perovskite has become one of the most attractive multifunctional materials benefiting from the unique ferro-/piezoelectric, photocatalytic and photoluminescence properties. In this contribution, a series of Er3+ doped KNbO3 nanocrystals with distinctive morphologies, i.e., nanocubes, nanocuboids, and quasi-nanospheres, were prepared via a facile molten salt synthesis method. Furthermore, using the as-synthesized nanocrystals, the Er3+ doped KNbO3 ceramics with homogeneous nanograins were obtained. The growth mechanism of the nanocrystals with different morphologies and sintering process of the nanoceramics were rationally proposed, respectively. It was demonstrated that the morphology of the nanocrystals could be controlled by adjusting the doping amount of Er3+ and the structure of the as-sintered nanoceramics strongly depends on the morphology of the pristine nanocrystals. Impressively, the Er3+-KNbO3 nanocrystals and nanoceramics exhibited excellent up-conversion photoluminescence (UC PL) properties. This work may pave a new way to the structure-controlled synthesis of rare earth doped perovskite oxides and related nanoceramics, which show large potential in applications of novel multifunctional devices.

Giant tunability of upconversion photoluminescence in Er3+-doped (K, Na)NbO3 single crystals

Abstract:Perovskite oxides with luminescent ions hold great promise in optoelectronic devices because of their outstanding thermal stabilities and electro-optic performance. As one typical perovskite upconversion (UC) host material, lead-free potassium sodium niobate ((K, Na)NbO3/(KxNa1-x)NbO3 or KNN) has attracted much attention in recent years. In the present work, a novel routine was developed to tune the upconversion photoluminescence (UC PL) performance by controlling the oxygen vacancy concentration in the KNN matrix, based on the 0.1% Er3+-doped KNN (Er-KNN) single crystals grown for the first time. UC PL properties, conductivity and defect chemistry of the single crystals were systematically investigated. The UC PL intensity of the as-grown Er-KNN material could be enhanced by 20 times after oxygen atmosphere annealing at 800 °C and fully quenched after vacuum annealing. What's more, by annealing under an oxygen atmosphere and vacuum, the conductivity of the Er-KNN sample was successfully tuned for more than 8 orders of magnitude. The super-wide range tunability of UC PL performance and conductivity could be explained by oxygen vacancies which gave rise to Nb5+-Nb4+ valence alternation. Because of the modulated photoluminescence properties and conductivity, our grown Er-KNN single crystals have great potential for use in multifunctional devices.
Unveiling the mechanisms of defects induced upconversion luminescence enhancement in Er3+-sensitized 2D Bi3O4Br nanosheets

Abstract:Lanthanide (Ln3+) ions doped upconversion (UC) nanosheets have attracted tremendous attention such as displays, sensing, bioimaging and lasers etc, which was benefitting from the intriguing optical characters of Ln3+. However, the field of UC nanosheets has been hindered by low UC conversion efficiencies associate with nonradiative relation (NR) occurring by defect, the existence and influence of defects still cannot be eliminated completely. In this work, we design introduce the impurity energy level by doping Er3+in Bi3O4Br:Er3+ nanocrystal materials, which was closed with the intermediate band (IB) formed by oxygen vacancies defects. The density functional theory calculations confirm the IB energy level was closed with the intermediate excited states of Er3+, which provided the potential to tailored the ground state carriers transition from matrix semiconductor to Er3+ and thus tool to counteract the effect of NR and even enhance the UC luminescence performance. The photo-current results evidenced that the photocarrier success transition from IB to Er3+ intermediate excited states energy level leads to a sharp decrease in the surface carrier, on the contrary, the electron population on the excited state energy level of Er3+ have increased. As a result, compared with unmodified sample the UC emission intensity under excited by 980 nm of green and red is enhanced by 7 and 4 times respectively. This work paves the way to design efficient UC nanosheets through by energy transfer (ET) combine matrix semiconductor with RE and greatly enriches the understanding about the ET behavior of RE.

Abstract:The Er-doped perovskite single-crystal NaNbO3 nanorods with a series of doping content (0-1 wt%) were successfully synthesized by hydrothermal method. The XRD and Raman analyses indicated that the Er3+ ion firstly entered into the B site (Nb5+) in the ABO(3) perovskite structure and then the A site (Na+) with a further increase of Er-doping content. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) was employed to demonstrate the single-crystal features of NaNbO3 nanorods. The as-synthesized Er-doped NaNbO3 nanorods exhibited excellent up-conversion (UC) photoluminescence (PL) behavior. The strong green emission and the weak red emission of Er3+ were observed in the UC PL spectra. The maximum emission intensity of the UC PL spectrum was achieved in NaNbO3 nanorods with 0.5 wt% of Er3+ doped. Furthermore, the UC PL spectra obtained under different laser input powers confirmed that two photons contributed to the observed up-conversion luminescence properties. Owing to these luminescent merits, the as-synthesized Er-doped single-crystal perovskite NaNbO3 nanorods exhibit potential application in novel multifunctional devices.
Upconversion Luminescence of Yb3+/Tb3+/Er3+-Doped Fluorosilicate Glass Ceramics Containing Srf2 Nanocrystals

Abstract:Yb3+/Tb3+/Er3+-doped transparent alkaline earth fluorosilicate glass ceramics containing SrF2 nanocrystals were prepared and their microstructures and spectroscopic properties were investigated. The formation of SrF2 nanocrystals enriched with Yb3+/Tb3+/Er3+ in the glass ceramics was confirmed by XRD, HRTEM and SAED. The glass ceramics exhibited intense upconversion luminescence behaviors, owing to efficient energy transfers from Yb3+ to Er3+ and Tb3+ and low phonon assistant non-radiative transition probabilities of excited Er3+ and Tb3+. The upconversion could be enhanced significantly by increasing the annealing temperature and the luminescence color could be adjusted by varying the Yb3+/Tb3+/Er3+ ratio. Upconversion of Er3+ could be described as sequential energy transfer from single Yb3+ to single Er3+, while upconversion of Tb3+ described as cooperative energy transfer from double Yb3+ to single Tb3+.
Upconversion and downconversion luminescence properties of Er3+ doped NBT ceramics synthesized via hydrothermal method

Abstract:Er3+-doped Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 (Er-doped NBT) ceramics were prepared via a hydrothermal method. High sintering active Er-doped NBT nano cubic particles with perovskite structure were synthesized at hydrothermal condition of 200 °C for 24 h in 12 M NaOH solution, which were self-assembled via in situ crystallization mechanism by the initially as-grown nanowires. The Er-doped NBT ceramics sintered at 1100 °C for 2 h exhibit pure rhombohedral perovskite structure, high densification and rather homogenous microstructure morphology. Under 488 nm light excitation, the strong green emission peaks centering at 530 nm and 550 nm and the weak red emission peaks locating at 665 nm and 735 nm are excited, which can be attributed to the 2H11/2, 4S3/2, 4F9/2 and 4I9/2 → 4I15/2 transitions, respectively. The maximum emission intensity is obtained when the Er doping content reaches 1.0 mol%. A strong upconversion emission peak centering around 550 nm in green light range is excited under 800 nm light excitation, which is correlated with the 4S3/2 → 4I15/2 transition.
Intense Upconversion Luminescence of Er3+/Yb3+ Codoped Oxyfluoride Borosilicate Glass Ceramics Containing Ba2GdF7 Nanocrystals

Abstract:Er3+/Yb3+-codoped transparent oxyfluoride borosilicate glass ceramics containing Ba2GdF7 nanocrystals were prepared and spectroscopic properties of rare earth ions were investigated. Fluoride nanocrystals Ba2GdF7 were successfully precipitated in glass matrix, which was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results. In comparison with the as-made precursor, significant enhancement of upconversion luminescence was observed in the Er3+/Yb3+ codoped oxyfluoride glass ceramics, which may be due to the variation of coordination environment around Er3+ and Yb3+ ions after crystallization. The transition mechanisms of the green and red upconversion luminescence were ascribed to a two-photon process, and that of the blue upconversion luminescence was a three-photon process.

Abstract:β-SiAlON:Ln3+ (Ln=Yb/Ho, Yb/Er) microparticles with up-conversion (UC) luminescence properties were successfully synthesized via a solid-state reaction method by employing Si3N4 (nanopowder), Al2O3 (nanopowder) and rear-earth oxides. The results show that the β-SiAlON:Ln3+ microparticles have a size ranging from 100 to 400nm. Under the 980nm NIR laser excitation, Yb/Er and Yb/Ho codoped samples exhibit UC luminescence centered at 658 and 660nm, respectively. The power dependency and the dynamics of the UC luminescence confirm the existence of two-photon UC processes in Yb/Er and Yb/Ho codoped samples respectively, and the UC mechanisms were given.

Abstract:Rare earth doped perovskite oxides have attracted much attention due to their multifunctional properties (such as photoluminescence, ferro-/piezoelectricity and so forth). In the current work, Er3+-doped (Li,K,Na)NbO3 nano-ceramics were successfully synthesized by spark plasma sintering and as-obtained ceramics exhibited excellent up-conversion photoluminescence (UC PL) behavior. The influences of the doping of Er3+ on the phase structure, microstructure, and UC PL properties were systematically investigated. The XRD and Raman analysis demonstrated that Er3+ ion entered into A site of (Li,K,Na) NbO3 perovskite structure. The most obvious enhancement of UC PL emission was achieved in the ceramics with 0.25 mol% of Er3+ doped, and the intensity of UC PL emission dropped with the further increase of Er3+ doping. Moreover, it found that two photons contributed to this observed UC PL behavior. These findings here rendered potential application of Er3+ doped (Li,K,Na)NbO3 smart materials in novel multifunctional devices. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The fundamental processes of upconversion (UC) emissions from trivalent lanthanide ions are essential for designing and improving the performance of UC materials. However, UC mechanisms involve multiple processes in one system because of the abundant energy states, which make it a challenge to exclusively verify and quantitatively evaluate the dominant process. In this paper, the mechanisms of green and red emissions in Er(3+) doped NaYF4-glass ceramics under 800 nm continuous wave laser excitation are studied via excitation power-dependence, polarization-dependence, and the transient evolution. These UC emission properties are compared with those under single-/two-wavelength excitation in a pump-probe system of 800 nm and 1500 nm femtosecond lasers. These results indicate that the excited state absorption pathway of (4)I15/2 → (4)I9/2 → (4)I13/2 → (2)H11/2/(4)S3/2 plays the dominant role in the emission of the green band, and the cross relaxation pathway of (4)I11/2 + (4)I13/2 → (4)F9/2 + (4)I15/2 plays the main role in the emission of the red band.
Self-doping induced oxygen vacancy and lattice strains for synergetic enhanced upconversion luminescence of Er3+ ions in 2D BiOCl nanosheets

Abstract:Rare earth ions combined with two-dimensional semiconductors can yield unexpected optical properties. However, fluorescence quenching has always been inevitable due to defects associated with material synthesis and doping. This study aimed to report the efficient upconversion enhancement of Er3+ induced by a new strategy of defect engineering in the layered semiconducting host based on BiOCl crystals. Here, oxygen vacancies (OVs) and lattice strain simultaneously form in 2D BiOCl: Er3+ nanosheets through Cl- ions self-doping, and tunable UC emission was realized.. Under 980 nm excitation, the BiOCl: Er3+ nanosheets doped with 300 mol% Cl- ions exhibit the best luminescent emission, and the green and red emission are enhanced 3.5 and 15 times, respectively. Moreover, this study showed that OVs can act as energy bridges to transfer charges to the Er3+ energy level, and enrich electron population in the excited levels resulting in photon avalanches, lattice strain enhances energy transfer and charge accumulation. Therefore, the photoluminescence (PL) performance of all energy level transitions is enhanced. This research provides a new insight into the development of defect engineering for UC PL in 2D nanomaterials.

Abstract:The information about optical propagation properties and the directionality of emission light of individual microcrystal is essential for the applications of lanthanide ions doped (Ln-doped) upconversion (UC) materials. In this work, we focus on the optical property of UC Yb3+ and Er3+ or Tm3+ doped beta-NaYF4 single crystal microrods and microdisks. Their optical propagation properties and directionality of the UC emission are investigated by the UC photoluminescence (PL) spectra and microarea PL microscopy images. The emission colors, directionality and intensity to the edges of the microcrystals are evidently sensitive to the initial excitation laser position. The waveguide effect and the self-absorption effect of the doping ions are responsible for such anisotropic emission and emission color changing. And the ray-dynamical interpretation can give well explanation on the emission light distribution.
Upconversion photoluminescence and dielectric properties in Er 3+ and Yb 3+ co-doped Sr 4 La 2 Ti 4 Nb 6 O 30

Abstract:Filled tetragonal tungsten bronze (TTB) structure Sr4La2Ti4Nb6O30 co-doped by Er3+ and Yb3+ (SLTN: xEr3+–yYb3+) ceramics with different x and y were synthesized, and their crystal structure, upconversion photoluminescence (UC-PL), and dielectric permittivity were investigated for the first time. Under 980nm infrared (IR) excitation, bright single-band UC green (515–570nm) emission was observed for SLTN: xEr3+–yYb3+ (x=0.05, y=0), however, featured two-bands UC emission (515–570nm and 640–690nm) was confirmed for all SLTN: xEr3+–yYb3+ (x=0.05, y≠0) samples. Two-photon energy transfer process was proved through pumping laser power dependence of emission intensity measurement. It is believed that energy back transfer (EBT) process should be mainly responsible for the two-bands UC emission. In addition, the dielectric properties were also discussed for SLTN: xEr3+–yYb3+ system.

Abstract:Under laser excitation of 976nm, the green and red UC emissions of CaTiO3: Er3+ nanocrystals were consistent with 2H11/2, 4S3/2→4I15/2 and 4F9/2→4I15/2 transition of Er3+, respectively. The green and red UC luminescence of CaTiO3: Er3+/Yb3+ nanocrystals were significantly stronger than the counterpart of CaTiO3: Er3+ nanocrystals, which was resulted from energy transfer between Yb3+ and Er3+. The blue and red UC emissions of CaTiO3: Tm3+/Yb3+ nanocrystals near 480 and 650nm were observed due to the 1G4→3H6 and 1G4→3F4 transition of Tm3+, respectively. The overall and relative UC luminescence intensities of Er3+/Tm3+/Yb3+ tridoped CaTiO3 nanocrystals were found to be depended highly on the concentration of Yb3+ and Tm3+, for which the involved mechanisms were demonstrated. By adjusting the concentration of Yb3+ and Tm3+, CaTiO3: Er3+/Tm3+/Yb3+ nanocrystals with the CIE coordinates close to (0.33, 0.33) were obtained.

Abstract:A series of Er3+ doped and Er3+/Yb3+ codoped SrTiO3 nanocubes with varying dopant concentrations have been successfully synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method. The doping effects on phase purity, morphology and microstructure of samples were identified by power X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The results showed that SrTiO3 nanocubes have a typical perovskite structure with the edge length ranging 20-50 nm. The Er3(+) and Yb3+ ions were successfully doped into the crystal lattice of SrTiO3, but did not alter crystal structure of SrTiO3. The photon up-conversion (UC) photoluminescence (PL) measurements indicated that the intense green light emission of Er3+ ions around 525 nm, 550 nm and red light emission centered at 670 nm in UC processes populated by 980 nm laser excitation have been achieved in SrTiO3 nanocubes. Moreover, the PL intensity of Er3+-doped SrTiO3 nanocubes was greatly enhanced while introducing the Yb3+ to the crystal structure, especially the red emission. The mechanisms for these emissions probably due to the excited state absorption (ESA) and energy transfer (ET) process. Er3+/Yb3+-codoped single-crystal perovskite SrTiO3 nanocubes could be interesting objects for applications in mechanical-electrical luminescence such as electric field modulation luminescence and mechanoluminescence. Dual-Wavelength Excited Intense Red Upconversion Luminescence from Er3+-Sensitized Y2O3Nanocrystals Fabricated by Spray Flame Synthesis

Abstract:Er3+-sensitized upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) have attracted great attention due to their tunable upconversion (UC) emissions, low cytotoxicity, high resistance to photobleaching and especially multiple effective excitation wavelengths. However, detailed energy conversion between Er(3+)and Tm(3+)ions in Y(2)O(3)UCNPs is still a problem, especially under multi-wavelength and variable pulse width excitation. In this work, we successfully fabricated a series of Er3+-sensitized Y(2)O(3)nanocrystals by a spray flame synthesis method with a production rate of 40.5 g h(-1). The as-prepared UCNPs are a pure cubic phase with a mean size of 14 nm. Excited by both 980 and 808 nm lasers, the tunable upconversion luminescence (UCL) from Er(3+)ions was achieved by increasing the Er(3+)doping concentration, co-doping Tm(3+)ions and extending excitation pulse-width. The investigations of the lifetimes and the laser power dependence of UC emissions further support the proposed mechanism, which provides guidance for achieving effective color control in anticounterfeiting and multiplexed labeling applications. In addition, the red UC emission at about 5 mm beneath the tissue surface was observed in an ex vivo imaging experiment under the excitation of 808 nm laser, indicating that the Y2O3:Er3+/Tm(3+)UCNPs have great prospects in further biological applications.
Upconversion photoluminescence of Er-doped Bi Ti O ceramics enhanced by vacancy clusters revealed by positron annihilation spectroscopy

Abstract:Doping of rare earth elements into Bi Ti O can significantly enhance the upconversion photoluminescence (UCPL) properties, but its structure-property relationship is still unclear. In this work, Er-doped bismuth titanate Bi Er Ti O ( =0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5) ceramics were synthesized via solid-state reaction method. The X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the orthorhombic crystalline structure of the Bi Er Ti O ceramics without any secondary phases. Experiments and calculations of positron annihilation spectroscopy were carried out to characterize their defect structure. The comparison between the experimental and calculated lifetime revealed that vacancy clusters were the main defects in the ceramics. The increase of the intensity of the second positron lifetime component (I ) of Bi Er Ti O ceramics indicated the presence of a high concentration of vacancy clusters. The UCPL spectra shown the sudden enhanced UCPL performance in Bi Er Ti O and Bi Er Ti O ceramics, which were consistent with the variation of the second positron lifetime component (I ). These results indicate that the enhanced UCPL properties are influenced not only by the concentrations of rare earth ions but also by the concentration of vacancy clusters present within the ceramics.
