Abstract:Orthorhombic molybdenum trioxide (alpha-MoO3) as one kind of potential inorganic photochromic material shows a slow response, poor reversibility and monotonic coloration. Here, we provide an efficient way to improve and tune the photochromism of MoO3. Novel inorganic-organic hybrid composites were successfully prepared by intercalating n-butylamine into the layer space of alpha-MoO3 and enhanced photochromic properties such as a fast response, superior reversibility, and good stability were achieved. Meanwhile, the solutions of as-prepared hybrids showed solvent-dependent discoloration due to the hole scavenger effect of ethanol. A reversible transformation between an intermediate state and an enhanced, but stable state was realized by switching irradiation. The improved photochromism caused the solutions of hybrids to show diverse discoloration varying from yellow to green to blue color.

Abstract:A series of photochromic sol-gel films are prepared through entrapping tungsten heteropolyoxometallates (PW 12 O 40 3− , SiW 12 O 40 4− ) and molybdenum heteropolyoxometallate (PMo 12 O 40 3− ) into a kind of inorganic–organic matrix cohydrolyzed from tetraethylorthosilicate and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane. The films show reversible photochromicity. Irradiated with ultraviolet light, the transparent films change from colorless to blue. Then, bleaching occurs when the films are in contact with air or O 2 in the dark. The Keggin-type polyanions interact with R–NH 3 + cations strongly, and thus disperse uniformly in the sol-gel matrix, as proved by Fourier transform infrared spectra and x-ray diffraction. The molybdenum heteropolyoxometallate sol-gel film has higher photochromic efficiency and much slower bleaching than its counterparts of tungsten heteropolyoxometallate. A charge-transfer model which is supported by electron spin resonance and related literature [T. Yamase, Chem. Rev. 98, 307, (1998)] is put forth to explain the above experimental results.

Abstract:A photochromic nanocomposite based on Keggin structure phosphomolybdic acid (PMoA) well dispersed in polyethyleneglycol (PEG) was fabricated. TEM image showed that PMoA nanoparticles with narrow size distribution were finely dispersed in polymer matrix. FT-IR results showed that the Keggin geometry of polyoxometalates was still preserved inside the composites and strong coulombic interaction was built between PMoA and polymer matrix. Under UV irradiation, the film was reduced photochemically to yield a blue species, which was in accordance with a charge-transfer mechanism.

Abstract:Developing multi-stimuli-responsive chromic materials has been intensively pursued as smart materials for rewritable paper, smart windows and anti-counterfeiting applications. Herein, a metastable-state photoacid, a protonated-merocyanine form of a spiropyran, was incorporated into a zirconium(IV)-based UiO-topological metal organic framework (MOF) material (form PAH-MOF) for multi-stimuli-responsive chromic materials. Photoacid on the framework of PAH-MOF adopts a stable merocyanine form. And PAH-MOF shows multi-stimuli-responsive chromism towards heating, different solvents and acids. Despite the PAH-MOF being photo-inactive in the solid state, the acidified PAH-MOF suspensions exhibit excellent visible light induced photochromism in water and ethanol. In addition, a distinct fluorescence change along with the color change is recognized, revealing a potential application in anti-counterfeiting. Our findings will help better understand the effects of MOFs on isomerization of spiropyran derivatives.

Abstract:The tris(pyridin-4-yl)amine ligand was found to exhibit a radical-actuated coloration phenomenon, and a novel copper-based color-changeable metal-organic framework (MOF) was synthesized via this photoactive ligand. After light irradiation, the photogenerated stable radicals in this framework induced increasing amplitude of magnetization (32%) at room temperature, being the largest enhancement among radical-based photochromic systems.

Abstract:Considering the great advantages of boron 2-(2'-pyridyl)imidazole (BOPIM) based dyes, such as facile synthesis, high fluorescence quantum yield, large Stokes shift, and good thermal stability, three BOPIM complexes (BOMPIM-Ph, BOPIM-Th, and BOPIM-TTh) with different aromatic side groups have been developed. Their crystal structures and photophysical and mechanochromic luminescence properties were systematically studied. It was found that their solid state emission and mechanochromic behaviors are related to the side group. High color contrast reversible mechanochromism and piezochromism were observed for the three analogues, while BOPIM-TTh with more bulky thienothiophene groups showed a more sensitive and pronounced mechanochromic response. Steric and electronic effects of the aromatic donating substitutes were proved playing significant roles in regulating the intermolecular interactions and intramolecular charge transfer effect. Fine-tuning the molecular structures of such kind of BOPIM dyes allows convenient modulation of their optical properties and mechano-responsive behaviors.

Abstract:Ethylenediamine trimolybdate ((C2H10N2)[Mo3O10], denoted as ENTMo) shows unusual photochromic and thermochromic properties. The color of the white ENTMo compounds becomes reddish brown gradually under UV irradiation, and changes gradually to blue-black upon annealing. XRD patterns and FT-IR spectra verify that the crystal structure of the colored samples is almost unchanged except distortion. UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) and ESR spectra of the photochromic and the thermochromic samples could confirm that there must exist difference between thermochromic and photochromic mechanism.

Abstract:An organic molecular system with proton and anion-tunable photochromism properties based on a pyridinium derivative was developed. Through controlling the pH value and anion nature of the self-assembled systems, the novel three compounds displayed different photochromism behaviors. This work reveals that the introduction of additional groups into the molecule increases the diversity of the property of such complexes.
Transition metal element doping to optimize the photochromic properties of WO 3

Abstract:This research prepared a photochromic material of WO 3 doped with Mo or Cu through a solvothermal method. The material exhibits selective absorption of UV light in the 200–350-nm range. The crystal structure of WO 3 remained unchanged after doping, but the bandgap was reduced, thereby increasing its coloration rate. The doping of Mo or Cu brought different new features to WO 3 : Mo-doping imparted a purple hue upon UV irradiation, whereas Cu-doping accelerated the bleaching of WO 3 due to its multi-valent state. WO 3 -0.1Mo and WO 3 -0.1Cu were preferentially selected through a practical photochromic process and bandgap calculations, and further used to prepare photochromic ink. This ink is suitable for the preparation of writing and photochromic rewriting paper and retains good photochromic properties even after 50 uses.

Abstract:Photoresponsive materials have drawn much attention and are widely applied in daily life for their reversible changes in luminous color or appearance color under light irradiation. In this work, a new photoresponsive system based on triarylamine derivatives is developed. With the changed aryl substituents, adjustable photoresponsive properties, including photoactivated phosphorescence and photochromism after being dispersed into the poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrix, are demonstrated. According to the theoretical calculations and experimental data, the competition between the formations of triplet excitons and cationic radicals under photoirradiation should be the main reason for their different photoresponsive properties. Excitingly, the applications of rewritable photopatterning, anticounterfeiting, information encryption, and decryption are realized conveniently, in addition to the successful model of sunglasses to protect eyes away from ultraviolet radiation and strong light in the sunlight. These studies present a simple and efficient design strategy for the development of photoresponsive materials on modulating the phosphorescence and photochromic property.

Abstract:A novel photochromic heteropolyacid-based composite film consisting of phosphomolybdic acid (PMoA), ZnO, and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was fabricated by a sol-gel process. The microstructure and photochromic properties of the PMoA/ZnO/PVP were characterized via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis). The FTIR spectra showed that the basic structures of ZnO and PVP, and the Keggin structure of PMoA in the PMoA/ZnO/PVP composite film, had not been destroyed during the preparation. The TEM images demonstrated that ZnO presented a rod-like structure, while PMoA was spherical, and many PMoA balls adhered to the surface of the ZnO rods. The XPS spectra of Mo 3d indicated that the valency of Mo atoms in the PMoA/ZnO/PVP was changed by visible light exposure. After visible light irradiation, the PMoA/ZnO/PVP varied from slight yellow to blue, while undergoing an opposite color change upon heating. The discoloration mechanism of the PMoA/ZnO/PVP was consistent with the photoelectron transfer mechanism.

Synthesis and Optical Effects of Poly(2-methoxy-5-butoxy)-p-phenylene Vinylene/Eu_2O_3 Nanocomposites

Abstract:The photoelectric nanocomposite poly(2-methoxy-5-butoxy)-p-phenylene vinylene/Eu2O3(PMOBOPV/Eu2O3) was prepared by a dehydrochlorination in situ polymerization.Results from Fourier transform infrared(FT-IR) spectroscopy indicate that PMOBOPV is coated onto the surface of Eu2O3.The composite dimensions were observed by high resolution transmission electron microscopy(HRTEM).PMOBOPV/Eu2O3 nanocomposites possess core-shell structures and their diameters were about 75-145 nm with a PMOBOPV coating thickness of about 25 nm.A stronger red-shifted absorption peak was observed with an increase in Eu2O3 content for PMOBOPV/Eu2O3 in the UV-Vis spectrum.Photoluminescence spectroscopy indicates that the maximum emission wavelength of the PMOBOPV/Eu2O3 is blue-shifted and the intensity of photoluminescence increases with increasing Eu2O3 content.PMOBOPV/Eu2O3 shows increased fluorescence because of an intermolecular photo-induced charge transfer process.The optical band gap(Eg) of PMOBOPV/Eu2O3 decreased gradually with increasing Eu2O3 content.The third-order optical nonlinear susceptibility of PMOBOPV/Eu2O3 nanocomposites was measured by degenerate four wave mixing.Results show that the third-order nonlinear optical response of PMOBOPV/Eu2O3 nanocomposites increases gradually with increasing Eu2O3 content.This can be attributed to intermolecular photo-induced electron transfer and delocalized π electron coupling between PMOBOPV and Eu2O3.

Abstract:As inorganic-organic hybrid materials, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit the combined advantages of inorganic semiconductor-type photocatalysts and organic/organometallic molecular photocatalysts in the field of solar energy conversion. The excited states, charge separations, and charge mobilities of MOFs remarkably influence the results of MOF-based photocatalytic systems, which reflect varying degrees of characteristics of inorganic semiconductors and organic/organometallic dyes. In this review, we aim to examine how the aforementioned photoelectronic performances affect each step of the photocatalytic processes based on the recent advances of energy catalysis and organic transformations by using MOFs, and attempt to find new clues for modulating the photoelectronic properties of MOF-based catalytic systems to achieve premium photocatalytic efficiencies and selectivities.

Abstract:Novel Ag2MoO4/Ag3PO4 (AgMoP) composites were synthesized by a facile precipitation method. The composition, structures and optical properties of as-prepared catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV vis diffused reflectance spectra (UV vis DRS). The photocatalytic activities were evaluated by the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB), methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) under visible light irradiation lambda >= 420 nm). 5% AgMoP composite showed the best photocatalytic performance, and its degradation rate constants were 2.8, 2.4, 4.6 times higher than pure Ag3PO4 for the degradation of RhB, MB, MO, respectively. Particularly, its photocatalytic property can be maintained even after four degradation cycles. Additionally, based on UV vis DRS and active species trapping, the photocatalytic mechanism for the enhanced photocatalytic performance of Ag2MoO4/Ag3PO4 was proposed. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Imaging Anisotropic Proton Intercalation in Photochromic MoO3

Abstract:Protonation represents a fundamental chemical process with promising applications in the fields of energy, environment, and memory devices. Probing the protonation mechanism, however, presents a formidable challenge owing to the elusiveness of intercalated protons. In this work, we utilize the atomic and electronic structure changes associated with protonation to directly image the proton intercalation pathways in α-MoO3 induced by UV illumination. We reveal the anisotropic intercalation behavior which is initiated by photocatalyzed water dissociation preferentially at the (001) edges and then propagates along the c axis, transforming α-MoO3 into HxMoO3 to realize photochromism. This photochromic process can be reversed via heating in air, leading to anisotropic proton deintercalation, also preferentially along the c axis. The observed anisotropic behavior can be attributed to the intrinsically low energy barriers for both proton migration along the c axis and water dissociation/formation at (001) edges.

Abstract:Photomagnetic materials have attracted enormous attention due to the adjustable coloration and magnetization via light irradiation, while challenges still exist for drastically tuning the magnetism at room temperature. Herein, a novel multifunctional crystal complex (H3-TPB)[Fe(C2O4)3]·H2O (1; C2O4 2– = oxalate and TPB = 1,3,5-tris(4-pyridyl)benzene) is constructed by self-assembly of paramagnetic Fe3+ ions, electron donor oxalate, and electron acceptor TPB ligands. After light irradiation, the compound 1 undergoes unidirectional electron transfer (ET) from oxalate to TPB ligands and Fe3+ ions, which not only results in the decomposition of oxalate and generation of radicals and Fe2+ species but also leads to remarkable ET-triggered photochromism. Importantly, room temperature light irradiation changes the magnetic behavior of 1 from weak to strong antiferromagnetism. Moreover, thanks to the stability of the photogenerated radicals, the photoresponsive proton conductivity property for 1 is also explored and photoenhanced proton conductivity is observed after photoirradiation.

Abstract:In this study, MOF/BiFeO₃ composite (MOF, metal-organic framework) has been synthesized successfully through a one-pot hydrothermal method. The MOF/BiFeO₃ composite samples, pure MOF samples and BiFeO₃ samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and by UV-vis spectrophotometry. The results and analysis reveal that MOF/BiFeO₃ composite has better photocatalytic behavior for methylene blue (MB) compared to pure MOF and pure BiFeO₃. The enhancement of photocatalytic performance should be due to the introduction of MOF change the surface morphology of BiFeO3, which will increase the contact area with MB. This composing strategy of MOF/BiFeO₃ composite may bring new insight into the designing of highly efficient photocatalysts.

Abstract:With tremendous investigations, photocatalysts based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are expected to play a significant role in the fields of energy conversion and environmental remediation. Nevertheless, further researches are still required to better design photoactive ligands and select suitable metal nodes to optimize the band gap and electron transfer pathways of MOFs, in order to improve their photocatalytic efficiency. To this end, a pyrazinoquinoxaline tetracarboxylic acid with a highly-conjugated and electron-rich structure had been synthesized to function as photoactive ligands. However, the large energy difference between the metal nodes and the ligands demands stronger energy excitation, which hinders visible light-driven photocatalytic reactions. To identify the influence of energy level matching and orbital hybridization between metal nodes and ligands on photocatalytic performance, an indium-based MOF was consequently prepared. In this way, efficient orbital hybridization between the metal nodes and the photoactive ligands has been established, hence metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) process can be triggered with visible light irradiation. Therefore, the combination of colorless In3+ ions and brown ligands gives rise to dark red crystalline materials, which effectively promotes visible light energy utilization. As a result, In-MOF exhibits a wide visible light absorption range with a relatively narrow band gap (1.474 eV), and could facilitate two reactions under visible light irradiation concerning the construction of C=N bond, which is significant in the industries of fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals. In-depth theoretical calculations were conducted to clarify the mechanism of the reactions and the catalytic activity of In-MOF. It turns out that the two approaches of charge transfer, MLCT and intra-ligand charge transfer (ILCT), and the interaction between the host and the intermediates play a crucial role in these transformations. By this way, the related research has established a template for modulating the orbital hybridization between the components to control the band structure of MOFs.
