Abstract:The enthusiasm for research on lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles is driven by both a fundamental interest in the optical properties of lanthanides embedded in different host lattices and their promise for broad applications ranging from biological imaging to photodynamic therapy. Despite the considerable progress made in the past decade, the field of upconversion nanoparticles has been hindered by significant experimental challenges associated with low upconversion conversion efficiencies. Recent experimental and theoretical studies on upconversion nanoparticles have, however, led to the development of several effective approaches to enhancing upconversion luminescence, which could have profound implications for a range of applications. Herein we present the underlying principles of controlling energy transfer through lanthanide doping, overview the major advances and key challenging issues in improving upconversion luminescence, and consider the likely directions of future research in the field.

Abstract:Metal-based upconversion luminescence transforming high-energy photons into low-energy photons is an attractive anti-Stokes shift process for fundamental research and promising applications. In this work, we developed the upconversion luminescence in co-crystal assemblies consisting of discrete mononuclear Yb and Sm complexes. The characteristic visible emissions of Sm3+ were observed under the excitation of absorption band of Yb3+ at 980 nm. A series of co-crystal assemblies were investigated based on mononuclear Yb and Sm complexes, and the strongest luminescence was obtained when the molar concentration between Yb3+ and Sm3+ is equivalent. The crystal structure was fully characterized by the single crystal X-ray diffraction and upconverting energy transfer mechanisms were verified as cooperative sensitization upconversion and energy transfer upconversion. This is the first example of Sm3+-based upconverting luminescence in discrete lanthanide complexes which present as co-crystal assemblies at room temperature. Co-crystal assemblies of mononuclear Yb3+ and Sm3+ complexes enable cooperative sensitization upconversion and energy transfer upconversion from Sm3+ at room temperature. This promising system opens powerful horizons for new upconverting material using co-crystal assemblies.image

Abstract:Wavelength-tuneable single-band upconversion (UC) can be achieved in some transition metal ion (TMI) activated systems ascribed to the susceptibility of d-electrons to the chemical environment. Moreover, UC of lanthanide ions (Ln3+) can be modulated by TMI, which benefits from the specific metastable energy levels of Ln3+ owing to the well-shielded 4f-electrons and tuneable energy levels of TMI. The combination also brings out additional functions like antiferromagnetism, ferroelectricity, and oxide-ion conductivity as well. Recent advances in this research field are reviewed in article 1600302 by Shi Ye, En-Hai Song, and Qin-Yuan Zhang.

Abstract:Lutetium oxide (Lu2O3) nanocrystals doped with 2%Yb3+, 0.5%Tm3+, and various doping concentrations of Li+ (0, 3, 5, 7, 10, 12, and 15 mol%) were prepared by the sol-gel method. The dependence on different doping concentrations of Li+ ions of the structure, morphology, and the upconversion emission intensity of the Lu2O3:2%Yb3+, 0.5%Tm3+ nanocrystals was investigated. The obtained Lu2O3 nanocrystals were systematically characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Fourier transformed infrared (FT-IR) spectra, Raman spectra, and upconversion spectra measurements. It was found that all the nanocrystals can be readily indexed to pure cubic phase of Lu2O3, indicating good crystallinity. The experimental results show that Li+ doping in Lu2O3:2%Yb3+, 0.5%Tm3+ nanocrystals can greatly enhance the upconversion emission intensity. The strong blue (490 nm) and the weak red (653 nm) emissions from the prepared nanocrystals were observed under 980 nm laser excitation, and attributed to the 1G4 --> 3H6 and 1G4 --> 3F4 transitions of Tm3+ ions, respectively. An simple analysis based on steady-state rate equations and a power-dependent study both indicate that the 1G4 levels can be populated by three-step energy transfer (ET) processes. The enhancement of the upconversion luminescence was suggested to be the consequence of the modification of the local field symmetry around the Tm3+ ion, reduced number of OH- groups, and the enlarged nanocrystal size induced by the Li+ ions.

Abstract:Lanthanide-based upconversion molecular complexes have potential application in diverse fields and attracted considerable research interest in recent years. However, the similar coordination reactivity of lanthanide ions has constrained the designability of target molecule with well-defined structure, and many attempts obtained statistical mixtures. Herein, an ion-paired Yb-Eu heteronuclear complex [Eu(TpPy)2][Yb(ND)4] (TpPy = tris[3-(2-pyridyl)pyrazolyl]hydroborate, ND = 3-cyano-2-methyl-1,5-naphthyridin-4-olate) was designed and synthesized. Thanks to the radius difference between Eu3+ (1.07 Å) and Yb3+ (0.98 Å) ions, the hexadentate TpPy ligand was selected to coordinate with Eu3+ and the Yb3+ with a smaller radius was chelated by bidentate ND ligand. As a result, the sites of Eu3+ and Yb3+ in the complex can be clarified by high-resolution mass spectrometry and single-crystal structure analysis. Upon the excitation of Yb3+ at 980 nm, the upconversion emission of Eu3+ was realized through a cooperative sensitization process. Furthermore, [Eu(TpPy)2][Yb(ND)4] demonstrated excellent photostability during continuous high-power density 980 nm laser irradiation, with a LT95 (the time to 95% of the initial emission intensity) of 420 minutes. This work provides the first example of a pure ion-paired Yb-Eu heteronuclear complex upconversion system and may bring insights into rational design of lanthanide-based upconversion molecular complexes.

Abstract:The low efficiency of upconversion luminescence hinders the pratical applications in many optical fields. During the past years, much attention have focused on the fluorides, reports of lanthanum vanadate (LaVO4) in oxides are scarce. Herein, a series of LaVO4:Yb3+/Er3+ crystals codoping with Ba2+ ions are synthesized through one-pot facile hydrothermal route. Many instruments, such as XRD, ICP, TEM equipped with EDS, luminescence spectroscopy are applied to characterize the products. By optimizing the impurity doping content to 15 mol%, the upconversion luminescence intensities of the green and red emissions are enhanced by 23 and 25 times, respectively. A formation mechanism for morphology evolution is proposed. The enhancement of upconversion performance are systematacially investigated upon the grain size, crystal structure symmetry and doping concentration. Moreover, additional operations are carried out by DFT calculations to confirm the experimental result. This work will guide to enhance upconversion performance based on lanthanum vanadate nanocrystals through impurity doping, which may realize the prospective applications in many fields.

Abstract:In this work, we developed two kinds of co‐crystal assemblies systems, consisting of discrete mononuclear Yb3+ and Er3+ and mononuclear Yb3+ and Pr3+, which can achieve Er3+ and Pr3+ upconversion luminescence, respectively, by Yb3+ sensitization under 980 nm excitation. The structure and composition of two co‐crystal assemblies were determined by single crystal X‐ray diffraction. By investigation of the series of two assemblies, respectively, it is found that the strongest upconversion luminescence is both obtained when the molar ratio of Yb3+ and Ln3+ (Ln = Er or Pr) is 1 : 1. The energy transfer mechanism of Er3+ assemblies is determined as energy transfer upconversion, while that of Pr3+ assemblies is determined as energy transfer upconversion and cooperative sensitization upconversion. This is the first example of Pr3+ upconversion luminescence at the molecular dimension at room temperature, which enriches the research in the field of upconversion luminescence with lanthanide complexes.

Abstract:We demonstrate the upconversion-photoluminescence spectra of Er 3+, Yb3+ and Li+ ions doped ZrO2 nanocrystals. By introducing Li+, emission intensities of single green and single red band increase by a factor of 1.93 and 1.65, respectively. Powder X-ray diffraction data and decreased slopes of the excitation power dependences on upconverted emission intensities give evidences that Li + ions can tailor the local structure of host lattice and improve energy transfer processes from Yb3+ to Er3+, respectively. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Infrared-to-visible upconversion emission intensities are investigated in Li+/Er3+, Li+/Ho3+/Yb3+ and Li+/Tm3+7Yb3+ codoped oxide nanocrystals. By introducing Li+ ion, the upconversion emission intensity of rare-earth ions are significantly enhanced comparing with that without the Li+ ion. The local structure around Er3+ and Ho3+ ions are studied by the extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. After doping Li+ ion, both the average bond lengths of Er-O and Ho-O are decreased.

Abstract:Near-infrared-to-visible upconversion luminescence was observed in Sm3+-doped ZnO-B2O3-SiO2 glass under femtosecond laser irradiation. The luminescence spectra show that the upconversion luminescence originates from 4G(5/2) to H-6(j/2) (j = 5, 7, 9) transition of Sm3+. The dependence of the fluorescence intensity of Sm3+ on the pump power indicates that a two-photon absorption process is dominant in the conversion of infrared radiation to the visible luminescence. The analysis of the upconversion mechanism reveals that the simultaneous absorption of two infrared photons produces the population of upper excited states, which leads to the characteristic orange-red emission of Sm3+. A three-dimensional display is demonstrated based on the multiphoton absorption upconversion luminescence.

Abstract:Achieving efficient photon upconversion under low irradiance is not only a fundamental challenge but also central to numerous advanced applications spanning from photovoltaics to biophotonics. However, to date, almost all approaches for upconversion luminescence intensification require stringent controls over numerous factors such as composition and size of nanophosphors. Here, we report the utilization of dielectric microbeads to significantly enhance the photon upconversion processes in lanthanide-doped nanocrystals. By modulating the wavefront of both excitation and emission fields through dielectric superlensing effects, luminescence amplification up to 5 orders of magnitude can be achieved. This design delineates a general strategy to converge a low-power incident light beam into a photonic hotspot of high field intensity, while simultaneously enabling collimation of highly divergent emission for far-field accumulation. The dielectric superlensing-mediated strategy may provide a major step forward in facilitating photon upconversion processes toward practical applications in the fields of photobiology, energy conversion, and optogenetics.

Abstract:Photon upconversion of lanthanides is an important approach for white light emission, showing great potential in displays, nanophosphors, white light lasers and so on. However, the white light upconversion in previous reports is usually based on the codoping schemes with conventional lanthanide emitters such as Er3+/Tm3+ or Ho3+/Tm3+, of which the performance is limited by the serious quenchable interactions between dopants (e.g., cross relaxation). Here, we report a new mechanistic approach to the white light upconversion by constructing the LiYbF4:Tb@LiGdF4:Yb/Tm@LiYF4:Eu core-shell-shell nanostructure. The use of lithium lanthanide fluoride matrix can improve the doping content of Yb3+ into the host lattice easily with resultant enhancement in the absorption of the excitation energy and subsequent upconversion luminescence. Through combining both interfacial energy transfer (IET) and cooperative sensitization upconversion (CSU), the white light upconverting emission has been realized under 980 nm excitation. Also, the upconversion emission has different lifetime values providing a temporal way to manipulate the upconversion emission colors. Our results offer a new experimental strategy for white light upconversion of lanthanide-doped materials, showing great promise in applications such as anti-counterfeiting.

Abstract:Recently, lanthanide (Ln) luminescent nanocrystals have attracted increasing attention in various fields such as biomedical imaging, lasers, and anticounterfeiting. However, due to the forbidden 4f-4f transition of lanthanide ions, the absorption cross-section and luminescence brightness of lanthanide nanocrystals are limited. To address the challenge, we constructed an optical oscillator-like system to repeatedly simulate lanthanide nanocrystals to enhance the absorption efficiency of lanthanide ions on excitation photons. In this optical system, the upconversion luminescence (UCL) of Tm3+ emission of ~450 nm excited by a 980 nm laser can be amplified by a factor beyond 104 . The corresponding downshifting luminescence of Tm3+ at 1460 nm was enhanced by three orders of magnitude. We also demonstrated that the significant luminescence enhancement in the designed optical oscillator-like system was general for various lanthanide nanocrystals including NaYF4 :Yb3+ /Ln3+ , NaErF4 @NaYF4 and NaYF4 :Yb3+ /Ln3+ @NaYF4 :Yb3+ @NaYF4 (Ln = Er, Tm, Ho) regardless of the wavelengths of excitation sources (808 and 980 nm). The mechanism study revealed that both elevated laser power in the optical system and multiple excitations on lanthanide nanocrystals were the main reason for the luminescence amplification. Our findings may benefit the future development of low-threshold upconversion and downshifting luminescence of lanthanide nanocrystals and expand their applications.

Abstract:Lanthanide-doped metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) have versatile luminescence properties, however it is challenging to achieve lanthanide-based upconversion luminescence in these materials. Here, 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (BTC) and trivalent Yb3+ ions were used to generate crystalline Yb-BTC MOF 1D-microrods with upconversion luminescence under near infrared excitation via cooperative luminescence. Subsequently, the Yb-BTC MOFs were doped with a variety of different lanthanides to evaluate the potential for Yb3+-based upconversion and energy transfer. Yb-BTC MOFs doped with Er3+, Ho3+, Tb3+, and Eu3+ ions exhibit both the cooperative luminescence from Yb3+ and the characteristic emission bands of these ions under 980 nm irradiation. In contrast, only the 497 nm upconversion emission band from Yb3+ is observed in the MOFs doped with Tm3+, Pr3+, Sm3+, and Dy3+. The effects of different dopants on the efficiency of cooperative luminescence were established and will provide guidance for the exploitation of Ln-MOFs exhibiting upconversion.

Abstract:Abstract Real-time color-tunable upconversion luminescence of lanthanide ions has recently attracted increasing attention. To date, at least two different excitation wavelengths are required to obtain tunable upconversion colors containing the three-primary-color components (Red-Green-Blue). In this work, for the first time, we demonstrate that it is possible achieving tunable three-primary-color upconversion luminescence using a single excitation wavelength, on the basis of the photon-order dependent uponversion nature. A core-shell-shell nanocrystal was synthesized, with rational designed compositions of Er/Yb and Tm/Yb in the core and the outermost shell, respectively, responsible for the green/red and blue emissions. By increasing the power density of the 980 nm continuous-wave excitation laser, the color of the emitted luminescence of the core-shell-shell nanocrystal evolved as green → red → blue, corresponding to 2 → 3 → 4-photons involved in the upconversion process.

Abstract:Wide wavelength range of upconversion fluorescence at 360nm, 450nm, 475nm, 647nm, and 800nm were observed in Tm3+ and Yb3+ codoped ZBLAN glass when pumped by a laser diode at similar to 970nm. Those emissions are from three metastable states D-1(2), (1)G(4) and F-3(4), respectively. Three samples with varying Tm3+ and Yb3+ ion doping were investigated. It was shown that the luminescence intensity: as well as the dependence of intensity on laser power density, vary strongly with rare earth ion concentrations. And the mechanism for the population of D-1(2) level is clarified further.
