Abstract:Full-dimensional coupled-channel quantum scattering and quasi-classical trajectory calculations have been carried out and analyzed to unravel the mode specific dynamics in the H2 + SH → H + H2S reaction employing two different accurate neural network representations of an ab initio global potential energy surface at the coupled cluster level. Strong mode selectivity was found and partially rationalized by the sudden vector projection model. Specifically, the vibrational excitation of H2 remarkably enhances the reactivity while its rotational excitation only slightly promotes the reaction. On the other hand, the reactant SH acts as a good spectator, whose vibrational and rotational excitations have a negligible effect on the reaction.

Abstract:An eight-dimensional quantum dynamical model is proposed and applied to the title reaction. The reaction probabilities and integral cross sections have been determined for both the ground and excited vibrational states of the two reactants. The results indicate that the H2 stretching and CH3 umbrella modes, along with the translational energy, strongly promote the reactivity, while the CH3 symmetric stretching mode has a negligible effect. The observed mode specificity is confirmed by full-dimensional quasi-classical trajectory calculations. The mode specificity can be interpreted by the recently proposed sudden vector projection model, which attributes the enhancement effects of the reactant modes to their strong couplings with the reaction coordinate at the transition state.

Abstract:The prototypical multi-channel reaction H + H2S → H2 + SH/H + H2S has been investigated using the full-dimensional quantum scattering and quasi-classical trajectory methods to unveil the underlying competition mechanism between different product channels and the mode specificity. This reaction favors the abstraction channel over the exchange channel. For both channels, excitations in the two stretching modes promote the reaction with nearly equal efficiency and are more efficient than the bending mode excitation. However, they are all less efficient than the translational energy. In addition, the experimentally observed non-Arrhenius temperature dependence of the thermal rate constants is reasonably reproduced by the quantum dynamics calculations, confirming that the non-Arrhenius behavior is caused by the pronounced quantum tunneling.

Abstract:The C2H2 + OH reaction is a key elementary reaction in acetylene oxidation, and the products forming in different reaction channels, such as C2H and CH3 radicals, are also important for subsequent reaction processes in the combustion process. In this work, we investigated the dynamics of the C2H2 + OH reaction with specific vibrational mode excitations and analyzed the mode specificity based on quasi-classical trajectory calculations on a recently developed full-dimensional potential energy surface. It is found that exciting OH stretching mode can promote the production of H + OCCH2 and CO + CH3, while the excitation of C-H symmetric/antisymmetric stretching mode of C2H2 can facilitate the H2O + C2H channel. Based on the prediction of vibrationally adiabatic and sudden vector projection models, the mode specificity in the C2H2 + OH reaction can be attributed to the difference in the degree of coupling between the initial motion mode and the reaction coordinate of each reaction path, which ultimately leads to the changes in rate constants and the product branching ratios. These findings can offer theoretical insights to regulate the branching ratio of the multichannel C2H2 + OH reaction.

Abstract:The state-to-state dynamics of the title reactions are investigated using a quasi-classical trajectory method on recently developed accurate global potential energy surfaces. Although both produce the H2O product, these two reactions have very different characteristics in the reaction energy, barrier location, and barrier height. It is shown that the H2O product is moderately excited in its three vibrational modes in the HF + OH reaction, but its stretching modes are highly excited in the HCl + OH reaction. For both reactions, the OH vibrational degree of freedom is essentially a spectator, which sequesters its energy throughout the reaction. On the other hand, the HF vibrational excitation has almost no impact on the H2O vibrational distribution while HCl converts some of its vibrational energy into the stretching modes of H2O. These mode specific correlations can be rationalized by the recently proposed Sudden Vector Projection model.

Abstract:Reaction dynamics and mode specificity in the H2 + NH2 → H + NH3 reaction are investigated in full dimensionality on a recent ab initio based global potential energy surface. Integral cross sections from several low-lying vibrational states of both reagents have been calculated under the centrifugal sudden or J-shifting approximations, using an initial state selected time-dependent wave packet method. This nine-dimensional system provides an ideal proving ground to test our recently proposed Sudden Vector Projection (SVP) model. Our results indicate that vibrational excitation of H2 enhances the reactivity. On the other hand, excitation of either the symmetric or antisymmetric stretching mode of NH2 inhibits the reaction, while excitation of its bending mode has a negligible effect. Furthermore, all vibrational modes are less effective than translational energy in promoting the reaction. These mode-specific features are rationalized with the SVP model.

Abstract:The time-dependent quantum wave packet (TDWP) and quasi-classical trajectory (QCT) are the basic research methods of reaction dynamics. Utilizing these two methods, the total reaction probability (J = 0), integral cross section (ICS), and rate parameter for the C+(2P) + SH(X2Π)(v = 0, 1, 2, 3) → H(2S) + CS+(X2Σ+) reactions are calculated on an accurate potential energy surface [Zhang et al. Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 2022, 24, 1007]. The results of QCT are slightly different from those of the TDWP in value, but the trend is consistent. They are also weakly dependent on the initial vibrational excitation of SH. The state-to-state reaction probability and ICS at fixed collision energies (0.1, 0.3, 0.5, and 0.7 eV) are first calculated using QCT methods. It is hoped that our work can attract experimentalists to study the dynamics of this interesting but rarely discussed system.

Abstract:A reaction typically involves a few active modes while the other modes are largely preserved throughout the reaction as spectators. Excitation of an active mode is expected to promote the reaction, but depositing energy in a spectator mode typically has no effect, because of the differing ability for energy flow to the reaction coordinate. In this work, we report a surprising case of mode specificity in a key radical-radical reaction OH + HO2 → H2O + O2, where such canonical expectations fail to hold. Despite its spectator nature, the vibrational excitation of the OH reactant is shown at low collision energies to enhance the reactivity significantly. This unique effect can be attributed to the increased attraction with HO2 due to the larger dipole of the stretched OH. At low collision energies, the stronger attraction increases the chance of capturing the reactants to form a hydrogen-bonded complex, thus of passing through the submerged barrier. The novel mechanism differs from the conventional vibrational enhancement via coupling to the reaction coordinate at the transition state, enriching our understanding of mode specificity in chemistry.

Abstract:An initial state selected time-dependent wave packet method is applied to study the dynamics of the OH + CHD3 reaction with a six-dimensional model on a newly developed full-dimensional ab initio potential energy surface (PES). This quantum dynamical (QD) study is complemented by full-dimensional quasi-classical trajectory (QCT) calculations on the same PES. The QD results indicate that both translational energy and the excitation of the CH stretching mode significantly promote the reaction while the excitation of the umbrella mode has a negligible effect on the reactivity. For this early barrier reaction, interestingly, the CH stretching mode is more effective than translational energy in promoting the reaction except at very low collision energies. These QD observations are supported by QCT results. The higher efficacy of the CH stretching model in promoting this early barrier reaction is inconsistent with the prediction of the naively extended Polanyi's rules, but can be rationalized by the recently proposed sudden vector projection model.

Abstract:The H+CH3OH reaction, which plays an important role in combustion and the interstellar medium, presents a prototypical system with multiple channels. In this work, mode specific dynamics of different product channels is investigated theoretically on a recently developed reliable potential energy surface based on a large number of data points calculated at the level of UCCSD(T)-F12a/AVTZ. It has been demonstrated that vibrational excitations of the O-H stretching motion, the torsional motion, the C-H stretching vibrations, show different influences on the four product channels, H-2+CH3O, H-2+CH2OH, H2O+CH3, and H+CH3OH. This work is helpful for understanding the mode-specific dynamics and controlling the competition for complicated reactions with multiple product channels.

Abstract:We utilized the time-dependent wave packet approach to compute the first full-dimensional (6D) state-to-state differential cross sections (DCSs) for the title reaction with the initial nonrotating H2S in the ground and the (100) and (001) vibrational excited states. It is found that the fundamental symmetric and asymmetric stretching excitations of H2S exhibit almost the same influence on the DCS, but unlike the H + H2O → H2 + OH reaction, they greatly increase the vibrational excitation of both the H2 and SH products. The hot vibrational state distributions of H2 are consistent with the prediction of product energy disposal by Polanyi's rules for an early barrier reaction. Because the incident H atom reacts strongly with both the ground and excited S-H states, the large populations of product SH(v2 = 1), which are very close to the relative reactivity of the initial S-H(v = 0) state, can still be explained by the local mode picture for H2S and the nonreacting SH bond's spectator nature.

Abstract:We report a comprehensive characterization of the vibrational mode-specific dynamics of the OH− + CH3I reaction. Quasi-classical trajectory simulations are performed at four different collision energies on our previously-developed full-dimensional high-level ab initio potential energy surface in order to examine the impact of four different normal-mode excitations in the reactants. Considering the 11 possible pathways of OH− + CH3I, pronounced mode-specificity is observed in reactivity: In general, the excitations of the OH− stretching and CH stretching exert the greatest influence on the channels. For the SN2 and proton-abstraction products, the reactant initial attack angle and the product scattering angle distributions do not show major mode-specific features, except for SN2 at higher collision energies, where forward scattering is promoted by the CI stretching and CH stretching excitations. The post-reaction energy flow is also examined for SN2 and proton abstraction, and it is unveiled that the excess vibrational excitation energies rather transfer into the product vibrational energy because the translational and rotational energy distributions of the products do not represent significant mode-specificity. Moreover, in the course of proton abstraction, the surplus vibrational energy in the OH− reactant mostly remains in the H2O product owing to the prevailing dominance of the direct stripping mechanism.

Abstract:Mode-specific chemistry has been a hot research topic in the field of molecular reaction dynamics since different degrees of freedom play potentially divergent effects on the reactivity of different channels and the associated product branching ratios. In this work, we examine the mode specificity effect in the reaction F + CH 3 OH → HF + CH 3 O (R1)/CH 2 OH (R2), a prototypical polyatomic reaction with multiple channels and submerged barriers, by extensive vibrational state-specific molecular dynamical calculations with the quasi-classical trajectory approach on a globally accurate full-dimensional potential energy surface. Complicated mode specificity effects are revealed. In particular, the vibrational excitations of the O–H stretching motion and the torsional motion with respect to the C–O axis can enhance the reactivity of R1 significantly. The excitations of the C–H stretching vibrational motions do not influence R1. For another channel, R2, the C–H stretching vibrational excitation shows some weak enhancement effect, while the O–H stretching vibrational excitation shows no effect on the reactivity. Then, the sudden vector projection model is employed to rationalize the mode specificity effects and understand the product energy partitioning in the two channels. The ro-vibrational state distributions of the nascent product HF/DF from F + CH 3 OH/CH 3 OD/CD 3 OH/CD 3 OD are also in good agreement with available experiments.

Abstract:Converged differential and integral cross sections are reported for the H + O2 --> OH + O reaction on an improved potential energy surface of HO2(X2A'') using a dynamically exact quantum wave packet method and Gaussian weighted quasi-classical trajectory method. The complex-forming mechanism is confirmed by strong forward and backward scattering peaks and by highly inverted OH rotational state distributions. Both the quantum and classical results provide strong evidence for nonstatistical behavior in this important reaction.

Abstract:While molecular vibration of CH4 is well described by the normal-mode paradigm, the local mode picture is more suitable for understanding the SiH4 stretching vibrational motion. To compare the roles of the two types of molecular vibration in reaction dynamics, the H + CH4 -> H-2 + CH3 and H + SiH4 -> H-2 + SiH3 reactions have been investigated using an eight-dimensional (8D) quantum dynamics method in which the nonreacting XH3 (X = C, Si) group keeps its C-3v symmetry in the reaction. The reaction probabilities, integral cross sections and thermal rate constants in the temperature range of 200-2,000 K were calculated for both reactions. Strong mode specificity was found in both reactions, and the differences were rationalized by the vibrational characteristics of the CH4 and SiH4 reactants.
