Abstract:A new ternary system consisting of ZnO nanorod/reduced graphene oxide (RGO)/CuInS2 quantum dots has been successfully prepared for photocatalytic application under visible light irradiation. Through the hybridization with the light harvesting material of CuInS2, as well as the conductivity medium RGO, the ternary composite achieves a greatly enhanced light absorption and charge transfer than that of the pristine ZnO. The photocatalytic performance of ZnO-RGO-CuInS2 is substantially elevated with an optimized content of 10% CuInS2 incorporated. The composite material of ZnO-RGO-10% CuInS2 can nearly completely degrade Rhodamine B (RhB) solution in 120 min, whereas bare ZnO itself can only degrade 20% RhB. The excellent photocatalytic performance of ZnO-RGO-CuInS2 demonstrates its promising in the photocatalytic or other extended applications. This work demonstrates a facile way to prepare integrative photosensitizer by taking advantage from the co-catalysts for more efficient and stable semiconductor based composite photocatalyst. Abstract:A novel direct Z-scheme ZnS quantum dot (QD)-Fe2O3 QD heterojunction/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) (GZxFy) nanocomposite was successfully synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. The surface of ZnS and Fe2O3 QDs was modified by -COOH and -OH groups, respectively. ZnS QDs can be covalently bonded with Fe2O3 QDs by the dehydration reaction to form the ZnS QDs-Fe2O3 QDs heterojunctions. The GZxFy nanocomposites displayed the highest photodegradation efficiency of 96.45% (40 min, UV light) and 90.17% (480 min, visible light) for methylene blue when the mass ratio of ZnS QDs to Fe2O3 QDs was 1:3. The excellent photocatalytic activity could be attributed to the enhanced light-harvesting ability, high large specific surface area, efficient interfacial charge-carrier separation and transfer as well as the low charge transfer resistance. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy and radical trapping experiments were used to confirm the Z-scheme mechanism formed between ZnS QDs and Fe2O3 QDs, and verify the electron transfer direction for UV or visible light-driven photocatalytic reactions. GZ1F3 nanocomposites showed the excellent superparamagnetic behavior, which enabled its rapid magnetic recycle from the solution within 95 s in a magnetic field.

Abstract:Nanohybrid of Zinc tungstate (ZnWO4) nanoparticles and chemically reduced graphene oxide (RGO) sheets was synthesized with a “green”, ionic-liquid assisted hydrothermal process. The prepared RGO–ZnWO4s have been thoroughly characterized by spectroscopic and thermogravimetric analysis. Based on transmission electron microscopic study, RGO does not change the structure and morphology of the ZnWO4 photocatalyst, while its visible light photoactivity toward degradation of dye pollutants is greatly improved. The enhancement of photocatalytic activity is attributed to the high separation efficiency of photoinduced electron–hole pairs in RGO–ZnWO4.

Abstract:Three-dimensional inverse opal SnO2/graphene (IO-SnO2/graphene) microspheres with a size of several tens of microns are first prepared by a well-designed two-step calcination of polystyrene ( PS) colloidal crystal template balls infiltrated with the sol precursors of SnO2 and graphene oxide. The polystyrene colloidal crystal template balls are formed by the self-assembly of monodispersed PS microspheres confined in water droplets of an inverse emulsion induced by the slow evaporation of water. Characterization with scanning electronic microscopy, Raman spectra, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy proved the ordered macroporous inverse opal composed of crystalline SnO2 and in situ reduced GO during the calcination. The pore size depends on the PS microspheres. The UV-vis diffusive reflectance spectra show that the light absorption edge of the prepared IO-SnO2/graphene microspheres can shift more than 400 nm. The photoluminescence spectra indicates that the IO structure and the introduction of rGO make the charge carriers transfer fast and retard the hole/electron recombination in the IO-SnO2/graphene microspheres so that their photocatalytic performance on the UV photolysis of methyl orange is considerably better than that of commercial SnO2 nanoparticles. However, the photocatalytic performance also depends on the content of GO. The addition of 0.06 wt% of GO achieves the best photocatalytic effect. Excessive GO will result in a diminished catalytic activity. This work provides a way to fabricate a new morphological SnO2 based materials with enhanced photocatalytic activity, which helps in the exploration of new photocatalysts with high performance.

Abstract:Three-dimensional urchin-like RGO/ZnO was successfully prepared for the first time by using a secondary hydrothermal method. The morphologies and hexagonal wurtzite structure of the prepared RGO/ZnO were characterized by SEM, TEM, and XRD. SEM and TEM results showed that the composite possessed a micro/nano size of about 2–4 μm, which is conducive to recycling after photocatalysis. Raman and XPS tests demonstrated that GO was reduced to RGO during the secondary hydrothermal process and that planar heterojunction occurred. Further investigation of UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectra and RhB light degradation showed that light absorption was extended to the Vis range and even the near-infrared region after ZnO compounded with RGO, rendering the composite a viable visible-light-driven photocatalyst. Among the tested materials, the composite with 1.5 wt% RGO had the strongest integrated absorbance intensity; this material increased photocatalytic efficiency by 64.57% compared with the 3D urchin-like ZnO. Overall, the 3D urchin-like RGO/ZnO composite is an ideal visible-light-driven photocatalyst. Given the high surface area, several electronic transmission channels, large spectral response range, and p-type conductivity of RGO, the 3D urchin-like RGO/ZnO composite is expected to be applied in photovoltaic and even lithium/sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract:A simple one-pot hydrothermal approach has been provided for the synthesis of a magnetically recyclable Co3O4/Co(OH)2/RGO ternary visible-light photocatalyst. The chemical reduction of graphene oxide (GO) and the formation of Co3O4 and Co(OH)2 nanoparticles occurred simultaneously during the hydrothermal reaction, and an intimate interface is built successfully between Co(OH)2 and Co3O4 nanoparticles at the nanoscale. The formation mechanism of Co3O4/Co(OH)2/RGO is investigated by means of TEM and XRD, indicating that the RGO nanosheets play a vital role in forming the ternary heterostructures. The synergistic effect between Co3O4, Co(OH)2, and RGO leads to decreased aggregation of nanoparticles, more surface active sites, two electron-transfer paths, and excellent charge transfer. As a result, a highly efficient and stable photocatalytic activity is obtained for the 6-wt% Co3O4/Co(OH)2/RGO ternary heterojunction photocatalyst under visible-light illumination (λ > 420 nm). Furthermore, the photocatalyst can be rapidly collected from the suspension using a powerful magnet and recycled with good stability, which is very meaningful in the practical industry and life.Graphical abstractTernary Co3O4/Co(OH)2/RGO heterostructure has been designed by a simple one-pot hydrothermal process; the synergistic effect of them leads to remarkably enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Constructing efficient and green photocatalysts to remove organic pollutants is of great significance to environmental purification. We used the facile one-pot hydrothermal method to couple lamellar SnS2 with RGO and BiOBr to synthesize a novel Z-scheme SnS2/RGO/BiOBr ternary photocatalyst. Compared with the single component, the obtained ternary composite material has enhanced photodegradation activity.It can be concluded that the 0.2SnS2/RGO/BiOBr composite exhibits the best performence,99.15% methylene blue removed after 15 min irradiation,reaching a 38.9% improvement compared to the pure BiOBr. Besides, the degradation rate of norfloxacin reached 81.6%. The excellent photocatalytic properties were studied by photoluminescence spectroscopy, and a Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism appropriate for SnS2/RGO/BiOBr composite was proposed according to the results of UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and free radical capture experiments, in which RGO acted as an electron transfer medium to accelerate the transfer of photogenerated electrons between SnS2 and BiOBr, thereby effectively limiting the recombination of photogenerated carriers.

Abstract:In this study, g-C3N4 nanosheets coated UiO-66 nanohybrids were fabricated via a simple solvothermal method. The physicochemical parameters, structural and electrochemical properties of g-C3N4/UiO-66 nanohybrids (CNUO-x) were investigated. The nanohybrids were systematically characterized by XRD, FT-IR, TGA, TEM, SEM, EDS elemental mappings, XPS, N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, PL and DRS. It was found that the addition of moderate g-C3N4 could enhance the separation and migration rate of photo-induced charges, consequently leading to the increase of photocatalytic efficiency. The CNUO-1 nanohybrid exhibited better photocatalytic activity for the oxidation of Rh B under visible light irradiation, and displayed about 6.0 and 3.3 times faster than that of g-C3N4 and UiO-66, respectively. Meanwhile, the nanohybrid showed excellent stability and reusability in four cyclic experiments. Finally, the increased photocatalytic reaction mechanism was also proposed. O2 −, h+ and OH were further found to be the main active contributors.

Abstract:Zero-dimensional/two-dimensional (0D/2D) Co3O4/GO composites with good visible light response were successfully prepared by adding a certain amount of GO to the nano Co3O4 synthesized by two-phase solvothermal method. The results show that the photocatalytic water oxidation performance of the synthesized Co3O4/Go is higher than that of pure Co3O4. The turnover frequency (TOF) of Co3O4/GO (15%) is 1.62 × 10-2s−1 per metal atom, and the initial quantum yield is 25.12%. The improvement of photocatalytic water oxidation activity and stability of Co3O4/Go were attributed to the enhancement of effective electron transport, which helps to reduce photoelectric recombination rate. The application of 0D/2D composites in the field of photocatalysis is expanded.

Abstract:Heterojunction formation and morphology control have always been regarded as effective ways to improve the performance of visible-light-driven photocatalysts. In this study, a new facile strategy was applied to synthesize the Z-scheme GO/AgI/Bi2O3 heterojunction, where polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) and γ-methacryloxypropyl trimethoxy silane (KH-570) were used to modulate the morphologies. Methyl orange and tetracycline hydrochloride were chosen as target contaminants to evaluate the photocatalytic properties of samples and the results revealed that 2% GO/AgI/Bi2O3 exhibited the best photocatalytic performance under visible-light irradiation. The enhanced photocatalytic activity can mainly attribute to Z-scheme heterojunction formed by the deposing of AgI and GO as well as the sufficient heterogeneous interfaces resulted from the improved morphology, which have effectively promoted the separation and transfer of electron-hole pairs. To deeply realize the enhanced performance of GO/AgI/Bi2O3 photocatalysts, the reaction kinetics, trapping experiments and photocatalytic mechanism were deduced.

Abstract:Sn3O4, a common two-dimensional semiconductor photocatalyst, can absorb visible light. However, owing to its rapid recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, its absorption is not sufficient for practical application. In this work, a Sn nanoparticle/Sn3O4−x nanosheet heterostructure was prepared by in situ reduction of Sn3O4 under a H2 atmosphere. The Schottky junctions formed between Sn and Sn3O4−x can enhance the photogenerated carrier separation ability. During the hydrogenation process, a portion of the oxygen in the semiconductor can be extracted by hydrogen to form water, resulting in an increase in oxygen vacancies in the semiconductor. The heterostructure showed the ability to remove Rhodamine B. Cell cytocompatibility experiments proved that Sn/Sn3O4−x can significantly enhance cell compatibility and reduce harm to organisms. This work provides a new method for the fabrication of a Schottky junction composite photocatalyst rich in oxygen vacancies with enhanced photocatalytic performance.
A Reduced Graphene Oxide (rgo)‐ferroelectrics Hybrid Nanocomposite As High Efficient Visible‐Light‐Driven Photocatalyst

Abstract:The efficient separation and transport of photogenerated charge carriers via the interface is crucial for the desired performance of the composite photocatalysts. Here we report a facile one-pot solvothermal approach to prepare reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-BaTiO3 (BTO) nanocomposites, where single- crystal and single- domain BTO nanoparticles were uniformly loaded on the rGO sheets. Such composites demonstrated a dramatic degradation performance of various organic dye pollutants under visible light irradiation. By systematically investigating the ferroelectric polarization, light absorption, charge separation and transport properties of BTO nanoparticles and rGO-BTO nanocomposites, the high photocatalytic efficiency could be ascribed to the synergic effect of ferroelectric polarization effect in BTO nanoparticles and superior electron transport of rGO on improving separation and transport of the photogenerated charge carriers. This work suggests that implementation of ferroelectric polarization effect in the composites would offer great opportunities to design and prepare high-efficient rGO-ferroelectrics photocatalysts for environment remediation.
Sandwich-like Z-scheme g-C3N4/reduced graphene oxide@TiO2composite for enhanced visible light photoactivity

Abstract:The sandwich-like Z-scheme g-C3N4/reduced graphene oxide@TiO2 (CN/RGO@T) composite with enhanced photocatalytic performance was successfully synthesized by hydrothermal method followed by a calcination process. It is interesting to note that TiO2 completely enclosed by RGO is presented in a nanoscroll morphology. Photocatalytic performance of the composite was evaluated in the propylene degradation. The results revealed that by introducing RGO as an interfacial mediator, Z-scheme g-C3N4-TiO2 nanocomposites could remarkably speed up the interfacial charge transmission and improve the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers. Especially, 20%CN/RGO@T composite showed the highest visible light activity up to 21.9% for propylene oxidation. A lower photogenerated electron-hole recombination rate and higher carrier separation efficiency of the ternary complex 20%CN/RGO@T were confirmed by electron spin resonance, photoluminescence spectrum, and photocurrent-time characterization. This is due to the fact that strong π-π interaction between g-C3N4 and RGO leads to a carrier transmission channel between N-O and C-O-C bonds of g-C3N4 and RGO. This newly formed Z-scheme composite is having a possibility to be explored as a versatile photocatalyst to conduct various type photoreactions.

Abstract:A series of RGO/ZnIn2S4 photocatalysts were successfully synthesized using ZnIn2S4 with different graphene oxide (GO) sources (GO-S, GO-O, GO-V) and characterized by various analysis techniques, such as UV–Vis, XRD, SEM, BET, Raman and PL. It was found that the properties of these photocatalysts greatly depended on the GO source and amount. The photocatalytic H2 evolution activities of these catalysts have also been evaluated under visible-light irradiation. When the GO source was GO-S and the GO amount was 0.1 wt%, the activity reached 1210 μmol g−1 h−1 and the apparent quantum yield (420 nm) determined to be 17.49%. On the basis of the characterization of the catalysts, the effect of the preparation method of (RGO)/ZnIn2S4 on the photocatalytic activity of RGO/ZnIn2S4 was discussed in detail.

Abstract:The pollution of organic dyes has become a serious environmental problem. It is still urgent to prepare a highly efficient and environment-friendly photocatalyst for pollutants removal. Herein, a micro-/nanostructured ZnFe2O4 hollow sphere/GO (ZnFe2O4/GO) composite photocatalyst was prepared through a one-step hydrothermal method with high performance and recycling property. The obtained micro-/nanostructured composite was assembled by ZnFe2O4 hollow spheres and GO nanosheets. The special self-assembled hollow nanosphere structure enlarged visible light harvesting. In addition, luminescence property demonstrates that the introduction of graphene oxide (GO) inhibits the recombination of electron–hole pairs, leading to enhancement of photocatalytic activity of ZnFe2O4. Under visible light irradiation, the ZnFe2O4/GO composite exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity for Congo red (93%), higher than that of the pure ZnFe2O4 hollow spheres (only 60%) and commercial ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles (40%). Moreover, the micro-/nanostructured ZnFe2O4/GO composite photocatalyst can be regenerated with high efficiency and remains over 80% activity after seven regenerations. This work not only supplies a new strategy for one-step preparation of such ZnFe2O4/GO micro-/nanostructures for structurally enhanced photocatalysis, but also provides a highly efficient photocatalyst for wastewater treatment.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Novel SnO 2– x /g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction nanocomposites composed of reduced SnO 2– x nanoparticles and exfoliated g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets were prepared by a convenient one-step pyrolysis method. The structural, morphological, and optical properties of the as-prepared nanocomposites were characterized in detail, indicating that the aggregation of g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets was prevented by small, well-dispersed SnO 2– x nanoparticles. The ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy absorption bands of the nanocomposites were shifted to a longer wavelength region than those exhibited by pure SnO 2 or g-C 3 N 4 . The charge transfer and recombination processes occurring in the nanocomposites were investigated using linear scan voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Under 30-W visible-light-emitting diode irradiation, the heterojunction containing 27.4 wt.% SnO 2– x exhibited the highest photocurrent density of 0.0468 mA·cm –2 , which is 33.43 and 5.64 times larger than that of pure SnO 2 and g-C 3 N 4 , respectively. The photocatalytic activity of the heterojunction material was investigated by degrading rhodamine B under irradiation from the same light source. Kinetic study revealed a promising degradation rate constant of 0.0226 min −1 for the heterojunction containing 27.4 wt.% SnO 2– x , which is 32.28 and 5.79 times higher than that of pure SnO 2 and g-C 3 N 4 , respectively. The enhanced photoelectrochemical and photocatalytic performances of the nanocomposite may be due to its appropriate SnO 2– x content and the compact structure of the junction between the SnO 2– x nanoparticles and the g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets, which inhibits the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes.
Synthesis of a Bi2O2CO3/ZnFe2O4 Heterojunction with Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity for Visible Light Irradiation-Induced NO Removal

Abstract:Although bismuth subcarbonate (Bi2O2CO3), a member of the Aurivillius-phase oxide family, is a promising photocatalyst for the removal of gaseous NO at parts-per-billion level, the large band gap of this material restricts its applications to the UV light region. The above problem can be mitigated by heterojunction fabrication, which not only broadens the light absorbance range, but also inhibits the recombination of photogenerated charge carriers. Herein, we implement this strategy to fabricate a novel Bi2O2CO3/ZnFe2O4 photocatalyst for NO removal under visible light irradiation and authenticate the formation of the above p-n heterojunction using an array of analytical techniques. Notably, the above composite showed activity superior to those of its individual constituents, and the underlying mechanisms of this activity enhancement were probed by density functional theory calculations and photocurrent measurements. Elevated electron/hole separation efficiency caused by the presence of an internal electric field at the Bi2O2CO3/ZnFe2O4 interface was identified as the main reason of the increased photocatalytic activity, with the main active species were determined as center dot O-2(-) and center dot OH by electron spin resonance spectroscopy. Finally, cytotoxicity testing proved the good biocompatibility of Bi2O2CO3/ZnFe2O4. Thus, this work presents deep insights into the preparation and use of a green p-n heterojunction catalyst in various applications.
A novel GO hoisted SnO2–BiOBr bifunctional catalyst for the remediation of organic dyes under illumination by visible light and electrocatalytic water splitting

Abstract:It is imperative to develop affordable multi-functional catalysts based on transition metals for various applications, such as dye degradation or the production of green energy. For the first time, we propose a simple chemical bath method to create a SnO 2 –BiOBr–rGO heterojunction with remarkable photocatalytic and electrocatalytic activities. After introducing graphene oxide (GO) into the SnO 2 –BiOBr nanocomposite, the charge separation, electron mobility, surface area, and electrochemical properties were significantly improved. The X-ray diffraction results show the successful integration of GO into the SnO 2 –BiOBr nanocomposite. Systematic material characterization by scanning and transmission electron microscopy showed that the photocatalysts are composed of uniformly distributed SnO 2 nanoparticles (∼11 nm) on the regular nanosheets of BiOBr (∼94 nm) and rGO. The SnO 2 –BiOBr–rGO photocatalyst has outstanding photocatalytic activity when it comes to reducing a variety of organic dyes like rhodamine B (RhB) and methylene blue (MB). Within 90 minutes of visible light illumination, degradation of a maximum of 99% for MB and 99.8% for RhB was noted. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance was also tested for the ternary nanocomposite, and significantly lower overpotential values of 0.34 and −0.11 V ( vs. RHE) at 10 mA cm −2 were observed for the OER and HER, respectively. Furthermore, the Tafel slope values are 34 and 39 mV dec −1 for the OER and HER, respectively. The catalytic degradation of dyes with visible light and efficient OER and HER performance offer this work a broad spectrum of potential applications.

Abstract:The novel Bi2WO6/r-GO/Bi25FeO40 Z-scheme system composite photocatalyst was synthesized by hydrothermal method. The crystal structure, elemental composition, surface morphology, optical and photoelectrochemical properties of the synthesized composite photocatalyst were tested. Compared with pure Bi2WO6, Bi25FeO40 and Bi2WO6/Bi25FeO40, Bi2WO6/r-GO/Bi25FeO40 composite photocatalyst has good degradation effect on methylene blue under visible light irradiation for 30 min. The synthetic Bi2WO6/r-GO/Bi25FeO40 photocatalyst norfloxacin also has a certain degradation capacity. The effects of catalyst dosage and norfloxacin concentration on the degradation were investigated. The catalytic mechanism of Bi2WO6/r-GO/Bi25FeO40 composite photocatalyst can be well explained by the Z-scheme system. The results show that the effective charge separation, better light absorption and larger surface area of Bi2WO6/r-GO/Bi25FeO40 composite photocatalyst contribute to excellent photocatalytic performance.
