Abstract:A new local route planning method for autonomous sailboat named as optimum speed method is proposed in the paper.By comparing the simulation results with those of traditional A* algorithm,the rationality and advantage of optimum speed method has been proved.The optimum speed method is superior to traditional A* algorithm when the boat sails against the wind or the wind field changes frequently.The model tests demonstrate that the optimum speed method is good in real-time application and works well with track following control model, which can meet the requirements of local route.

Abstract:Unmanned sailboats have gained a lot of interest in recent years due to their low energy consumption and long endurance, which has great potential in obtaining sea surface meteorological information. It is challenging to perform effective control due to their strongly nonlinear and coupling characteristics. This work develops a sail-rudder collaborative control method for an unmanned sailboat based on reinforcement learning using Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient. The kinematic model of a 12-foot sailboat and the model of time-varying wind and ocean current are employed in Matlab software to train the control policy. A series of simulations are conducted and the results verify the effectiveness of the control policy.

Collision-free Trajectory Planning for Autonomous Surface Vehicle

Abstract:In this paper, we propose an efficient and accurate method for autonomous surface vehicles to generate a smooth and collision-free trajectory considering its dynamics constraints. We decouple the trajectory planning problem as a front-end feasible path searching and a back-end kinodynamic trajectory optimization. Firstly, we model the type of two-thrusts under-actuated surface vessel. Then we adopt a sampling-based path searching to find an asymptotic optimal path through the obstacle-surrounding environment and extract several waypoints from it. We apply a numerical optimization method in the back-end to generate the trajectory. From the perspective of security in the field voyage, we propose the sailing corridor method to guarantee the trajectory away from obstacles. Moreover, considering limited fuel ASV carrying, we design a numerical objective function which can optimize a fuel-saving trajectory. Finally, we validate and compare the proposed method in simulation environments and the results fit our expected trajectory.

Abstract:Dynamic variability in vast ocean environments and limitation in sampling resources have made optimal environmental sampling a hot topic of discussion recently. In this paper we consider the problem of path planning for Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) carrying conductivity, temperature and depth (CTD) sensors, aiming to minimizing sound velocity profile prediction uncertainty after assimilating in-situ measurements. The problem is modeled as a non-linear deterministic optimization problem based on maximum a posterior probability (MAP) criterion. An approximated way to calculate the uncertainty reduction for each path group is utilized to save the computation time. Numeric simulation results have confirmed the effectiveness of the approach.

Abstract:A track following controller for autonomous sailboat was developed and applied to a 1.5 m sailboat experiment. There are three modules inside the controller. The module of Local Path Strategy determines the turning process along the specified track. The module of Sail Automatic Control employs the relationship between the sail angle and the apparent wind to achieve the optimal wind drive. The module of Rudder Automatic Control is based on 245 pieces of fuzzy logic rules summarized from the general steering experiences. The lake testing demonstrates the effectiveness of the track following controller in various wind conditions. It has potential for actual application in long-range autonomous sailing.

Abstract:Stationary node data retrieval and adaptive sampling are two important tasks in marine environment monitoring based on autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). Enabling AUVs to carry out these two heterogeneous tasks within a single deployment is crucial for the efficient utilization of hardware resources. This letter presents a path planning method for a multi-AUV system that concurrently performs stationary node access and adaptive sampling. The proposed method assigns nodes for AUVs by dividing the optimal giant route, then partitions the mission area into sampling regions using Voronoi diagrams and assigns tasks to each AUV. Modeling the interesting field as a Gaussian process, each AUV plans its sampling path within the assigned region based on spatial sampling, and the planning objective is to maximize the total covariance of the sampling positions. The proposed planner is compared to existing methods through simulations, and it outperforms the single task-focusing methods by 45.3% and 54.2% in different aspects, effectively enabling the AUVs in accomplishing the two heterogeneous tasks concurrently. The real-world test has further substantiated the planner's feasibility.

Abstract:Path planning for unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) in the presence of ocean currents is a challenging task. Several relevant methods have been proposed, but they all assume a constant surge velocity for the whole path. This hypothesis makes it impossible to achieve the simultaneous optimization of speed and energy consumption. To deal with this issue, in this paper an optimal control path planning method that considers the currents’ characteristics is proposed. Unlike traditional algorithms such as the A* algorithm and genetic algorithm, the proposed Multi-domain Coupling Collocation (MDCC) method does not require a constant thrust assumption. In addition, it can obtain the Pareto optimal path under various current environments and optimize the sailing parameters. Specifically, first a multi-objective optimal control path planning model considering the kinematic characteristics of USVs is established. Second, the MDCC method is proposed to solve it, which includes dividing the time interval, subdomain collocation, and transformation optimization. Last, the optimality and high efficiency of the proposed method are proved theoretically. Simulation experiments show that the proposed method can provide solutions to this problem where existing algorithms fail, and has strong robustness and high efficiency. Furthermore, the obtained path is superior to those obtained using the existing algorithms in various scenarios.

Abstract:A method of local path planning is proposed for inland water ships navigating in current.Based on the conventional line of sight (LOS) algorithm,the general curve path LOS control algorithm is developed.Combining the local path planning and curve path LOS algorithm,the inland water USV (unmanned surface vehicles) model can successfully complete the autonomous navigation along the planned path in rising tide and ebb tide.The test results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method which is valuable for further development of inland water USV.

Abstract:In order to realize the path planning of unmanned sailboats under the influence of wind field, this paper proposes a Q-learning algorithm based on Gaussian process. Specifically, the exploratory behavior strategy of the unmanned sailboat is used to generate training samples to evaluate the value function of the optimal strategy. Secondly, the optimal value function is estimated by the Gaussian process, and the approximation of the linear function is realized. Finally, the algorithm is tested in racing scenarios and sailing around buoy scenarios. The results show that the GP-QL algorithm can well realize the path planning of unmanned sailing boats, and can be used for competitive training and innovative education of sailing boats.

Abstract:Path planning for sailboat robots is a challenging task particularly due to the kinematics and dynamics modelling of such kinds of wind propelled boats. The problem is divided into two layers. The first one is global were a general trajectory composed of waypoints is planned, which can be done automatically based on some variables such as weather conditions or defined by hand using some human-robot interface (a ground-station). In the second local layer, at execution time, the global route should be followed by making the sailboat proceed between each pair of consecutive waypoints. Our proposal in this paper is an algorithm for the global, path generation layer, which has been developed for the N-Boat (The Sailboat Robot project), in order to compute feasible sailing routes between a start and a target point while avoiding dangerous situations such as obstacles and borders. A reinforcement learning approach (Q-Learning) is used based on a reward matrix and a set of actions that changes according to wind directions to account for the dead zone, which is the region against the wind where the sailboat can not gain velocity. Our algorithm generates straight and zigzag paths accounting for wind direction. The path generated also guarantees the sailboat safety and robustness, enabling it to sail for long periods of time, depending only on the start and target points defined for this global planning. The result is the development of a complete path planner algorithm that, together with the local planner solved in previous work, can be used to allow the final developments of an N-Boat making it a fully autonomous sailboat.

Abstract:Aims to make the autonomous circular-arc sailboat with navigation into practice experimentally.An algorithm based on the optimization of the time derivative of the distance between boat and any specified target was applied to an unmanned and autonomously controlled sailboat for verification in self-propulsion test.The navigation route agreed well with expected results, except for the wrong reverse turning in hysteresis condition.To solve the problem, the control algorithm was upgraded at the turning corner by adding a principle that trim the sail to an optimal position at the beginning of the next leg, which led to a considerable decrease of navigation time in experiments carried out later.The autonomous navigation is accomplished successfully definitely.

Abstract:This paper describes a route planner that enables an autonomous underwater vehicle to selectively complete part of the predetermined tasks in the operating ocean area when the local path cost is stochastic. The problem is formulated as a variant of the orienteering problem. Based on the genetic algorithm (GA), we propose the greedy strategy based GA (GGA) which includes a novel rebirth operator that maps infeasible individuals into the feasible solution space during evolution to improve the efficiency of the optimization, and use a differential evolution planner for providing the deterministic local path cost. The uncertainty of the local path cost comes from unpredictable obstacles, measurement error, and trajectory tracking error. To improve the robustness of the planner in an uncertain environment, a sampling strategy for path evaluation is designed, and the cost of a certain route is obtained by multiple sampling from the probability density functions of local paths. Monte Carlo simulations are used to verify the superiority and effectiveness of the planner. The promising simulation results show that the proposed GGA outperforms its counterparts by 4.7%–24.6% in terms of total profit, and the sampling-based GGA route planner (S-GGARP) improves the average profit by 5.5% compared to the GGA route planner (GGARP).

Abstract:In view of the vulnerability of ocean unmanned sailboats to the large lateral velocities due to wind and waves during navigation, this paper proposes a Gaussian Process Model Predictive Control (GPMPC) method based on data-driven learning technique to improve the navigation tracking accuracy of unmanned sailboats. The feature model of the sailing course change subject to the wind and waves is learned from the efficient sampling data. It is then combined with the model predictive control to form the course controller. To reduce the influence of wind and waves disturbances, an adaptive weight term is designed in the object function to improve the tracking accuracy of the model predictive control. The guidance commands received by the model predictive controller take into account the path deviation caused by the current and lateral motion of the ship. The results show that GPMPC has the advantages of fast response time and less overshoot; the unmanned sailboat can better achieve waypoint tracking by learning navigation data.

Autonomous Route Planning for Ships in Complex Waterways

Abstract:Route planning for ship navigation is a process to generate the optimal route with the careful consideration of ship maneuvering constraints and environmental conditions. This paper presents a study on a ship’s navigation through a canal estuary area with the strong currents. An autonomous route planning algorithm based on the modified RRT approach (rapidly-exploring random tree) is developed to handle this increased level of complexity. A series of navigation model tests were conducted to verify this route planning algorithm. The optimal route generated from the proposed algorithm could ensure safe navigation of the ship model through this canal estuary area without any collisions with the dikes or the tidal barrier. Autonomous route planning built upon scientific theories and operational experiences has the great advantage to generate optimal routes even in complex waterways, which is possible to minimize human errors in navigation decision.

Abstract:Unmanned sailboats use wind energy to assist in propulsion during navigation and are featured by the advantages of clean energy and long endurance, making a hotspot of research on maritime unmanned vehicles. Sails are a core component of unmanned sailboats, and most existing studies on rotating sail have the shortcomings of high energy consumption and load. Therefore, this article proposes a novel method to achieve self-balancing sail rotation based on elastic rope and reduce the energy consumption and load of unmanned sailboats, and establishes a model for the self-balancing rotating sail. We introduced the sum of angular thrust of spherical surface S L as a performance evaluation index for unmanned sailboats, which considers both thrust and navigable range. Based on this index, the mechanical and positional parameters of the model are optimized to obtain the optimal solutions. The performance is increased by 24% after the optimization, and by 76% compared with the sailboat with the fixed sail angle when the same initial sail angle of 38° is adopted. Following the optimal solutions, we develop a prototype of the unmanned sailboat with self-balancing rotating sail. Subsequently, wind turbine experiments are conducted to preliminarily verify the correctness of the model for self-balancing rotating sail and the optimization results. Finally, sea trials are conducted to further verify the performance and seaworthiness of the unmanned sailboat under realistic sea conditions, successfully achieving a 15-day voyage under harsh sea conditions of levels 2 to 4. This study to some extent compensates for the shortcomings of existing studies on rotating sail and provides guidance for subsequent theoretical and engineering research in the field of unmanned sailboats.

Abstract:Global route planning has garnered global scholarly attention as a crucial technology for ensuring the safe navigation of intelligent ships. The comprehensive influence of time-varying factors such as water depth, prohibited areas, navigational tracks, and traffic separation scheme (TSS) on ship navigation in coastal global route planning has not been fully considered in existing research, and the study of route planning method from the perspective of practical application is still needed. In this paper, a global route planning method based on human-like thinking for coastal sailing scenarios is proposed. Based on the historical route's information, and taking into full consideration those time-varying factors, an abnormal waypoint detection and correction method is proposed to make the planned route conform to relevant regulations of coastal navigation and the common practices of seafarers as much as possible, and better meet the coastal navigation needs of unmanned ships. Taking the global route planning of "ZHIFEI", China's first autonomous navigation container ship, as an example, the validity and reliability of the proposed method are verified. Experimental findings demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method in global route planning for coastal navigation ships. The method offers a solid theoretical foundation and technical guidance for global route planning research of unmanned ship.

Abstract:During the design phase of sailboats, naval architects typically employ hydrodynamic and aerodynamic models of the sailboat, utilizing a Velocity Prediction Program (VPP) to solve the equations of motion, thus determining the sailboat's speed and performance. Traditional methods for solving sailboat motion equations often employ simplified empirical formulas or costly experimental procedures, which yield less accurate results. This study presents the RANSE-based CFD software STAR-CCM + to comprehensively model the sailboat's hull-sail-rudder assembly. By implementing overset grid technology and the Volume of Fluid (VOF) model, the paper aims to couple the solution of aerodynamic and hydrodynamic forces under wind influence and introduces PID rudder control technology to maintain a balance of forces and convergence of motion state. This approach enables the prediction of the sailboat's speed and performance, such as yaw angle, heel, and rudder angle. Results demonstrate minimal variations in sailboat speed (<0.05 m/s) and heading (<0.1°) in upwind, downwind and reaching sailing conditions, underscoring the method's feasibility and advocating for further research into self-sailing performance.

Abstract:The aim of local path planning for unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) is to avoid unknown dynamic or static obstacles. However, current relative studies have not fully considered the impact of ocean environmental factors which significantly increase the control difficulty and collision risk of USVs. Therefore, this work studies two ocean environmental factors, namely, wave and current, given that they both have a significant impact on USVs. Furthermore, we redesign a kinematic model of an USV and the evaluation function of a classical and practical local path planning method based on the dynamic window approach (DWA). As shown by the results of the simulations, the path length was impacted mainly by the intensity of the environmental load and slightly by the direction of the environmental load, but the navigation time was significantly influenced by both. Taking the situation in still water as a benchmark in terms of the intensity and direction of the environmental factors, the maximum change rates of the path length were 8.6% and 0.6%, respectively, but the maximum change rates of the navigating time were 17.9% and 25.6%, separately. In addition, the average calculation time of each cycle was only 0.0418 s, and the longest time did not exceed the simulation time corresponding to a single cycle of 0.1 s. This method has proven to be a good candidate for real-time local path planning of USVs since it systematically considers the impact of waves and currents on the navigation of USVs, and thus ensures that USVs can adjust to the planned path in time and avoid obstacles when navigating in the real ocean environment.
