Abstract:Polarization optical time-domain reflectometry (POTDR) is sensitive to perturbations on any point of the fiber under test (FUT). However, restricted by the sensing principle, the signal of the front perturbation would mask the signals of the rear ones. Thus, in practical applications, a perturbation on the lead fiber between a POTDR and the FUT would generate unnecessary signal which hinders POTDR from distinguishing the valid signal. In this paper, a new POTDR scheme which is robust to perturbations on the lead fiber is proposed. So only the perturbations on the FUT can generate signals. The principle is explained in detail and experiments demonstrate the validity of this scheme. By using the proposed scheme, multiple perimeters are monitored independently at one time, and distributed sensing is realized for each perimeter.

Abstract:In this paper, a new distributed fiber optic sensor system based on dual sensing directions by polarization optical time-domain reflectometer (POTDR) is proposed. Using a single POTDR scheme, the system is able to detect signals in the forward direction and backward direction simultaneously. It can detect more perturbations applied on the fiber simultaneously than a traditional POTDR. It can also improve the positioning accuracy of POTDR by judging the perturbations from both directions. The proposed method is cost effective and has good potential in the application of intrusion monitoring.

Abstract:Current perception threshold (CPT) testing, which utilizes current in sine waveform at certain frequencies to stimulate human nerve ending receptors to measure the capability of a man to sense a current stimulus so that the function of the nerve can be evaluated quantitatively, is one of quantilalive sensory lesling methods. This paper reviews historical and current researches on CPT and reports a CPT testing system we developed recently. Employed a physio-pysiologieal statistic algorithm, the system can filter subjective effect and has double-blind auto-testing function. Experiments show that the testing results using this system have a very good repeatability.

Abstract:Based on the importance of pipeline monitoring and maintenance in the oil and gas industry, the advantages and advantages of sensors based on the principle of Brillouin Optical Time Domain Reflectance (BOTDR) and Polarized Optical Time Domain Reflectance (POTDR) in oil and gas pipeline monitoring are discussed. Insufficiency, because the BOTDR[1] principle sensor has been applied in the monitoring of oil and gas pipelines, the application value of the POTDR principle sensor in the monitoring of oil and gas pipelines was discussed, and a POTDR[2] sensing system with fiber grating was designed. The grating enhances the intensity of the reflected signal light, which can effectively improve the signal-to-noise ratio of the sensing system and make the measurement of vibration more accurate. Not only vibration, but the influence of pressure, temperature, magnetic field and other physical quantities along the optical fiber will also cause the polarization state of the light wave to change. By collecting and analyzing the change in the polarization state of the light wave, the change in the physical quantity that caused the change in the polarization state of the light wave can be reversed, so as to realize the measurement of physical quantity. The method is stable, feasible, clear in principle, and low in cost, and its application value in the future cannot be underestimated.

Abstract:The state of polarization (SOP) of optical lightwave in fiber is very sensitive to the external events. Based on this phenomenon, the polarization time domain reflectometer (POTDR) can be used as a distributed sensing means for the detection of fiber pressing, bending, and vibration, etc. However, SOP of optical lightwave at a specific position is dependent to its previous status. That means the first disturbance nearest to the input end is usually fused with subsequent disturbances, which makes the POTDR method difficult to detect multi-disturbances. In this paper, research progress of multi-disturbances detection by POTDR was reviewed. Existing POTDR techniques like analyzing spectrum method, resolving local birefringence method and special sensing fiber method were introduced and analyzed.

Abstract:A method using a polarization beam splitter (PBS) and a balanced photodetector (BPD) to differentially measure the changes of state of polarization (SOP) is proposed for polarization optical time domain reflectometry (POTDR). A laboratory system for long distance vibration fiber sensor based on this method is devised. The average algorithm and Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) method are used in data processing to realize fast measurement. Then an integrated system is realized. The improvements on the measuring sensitivity of SOP, response time, spatial resolution, frequency resolution and amplitude resolution, sensing distance of the system are all tested. A sensing system is achieved with sensing range of 14 km, response time of 2.26 s, spatial resolution of 10 m, amplitude resolution of 0.5 mm and frequency resolution of 1 Hz.

Abstract:A sensing measurement scheme based on the optical fiber coupling optical driving converting probe is proposed. Using the optical feedback stabilized 5mW LD as illuminant, the optical driving distance is 100m. The power of designed low-consumption temperature-sensitive sensor probe is small to 2.2mW. The design idea of this new sensor and the key technology of realizing optical driving are introduced in this paper. Experimental results show that the temperature sensor with high resolution can resist high-voltage and electromagnetic interference, and has high sensitivity and precision with 1000Hz/°C.

Abstract:Polarization optical time domain reflectometers (POTDR) can detect vibration of fiber via the change of the state of polarization (SOP) of the Rayleigh backscattered light. For traditional POTDR systems, one key problem is the high misdiagnosis rate when multiple vibrations are simultaneously applied on the sensing fiber due to the random birefringence along the fiber. To solve this problem, we propose in this paper a novel implementation of the POTDR using probe pulses with ergodic SOPs. A series of vibration spectra along the fiber are obtained by sweeping the SOP of the probe pulse. The sum of these vibration spectra, which should be immune to the birefringence of the sensing fiber, is used to analyze the vibration information. Numerical simulation and experiments are carried out to analyze the performance of the proposed system when the input SOPs are traversed with uniform distribution and random distribution. Results show that the misdiagnosis rate of detecting multi-vibration with different frequencies is greatly reduced. In addition, detection of more-than-two vibrations with the same frequency based on POTDR is successfully performed for the first time to the best of our knowledge.

Abstract:A polarization optical time-domain reflectometer (POTDR) can distributedly measure the vibration of fiber by detecting the vibration induced polarization variation only with a polarization analyzer. It has great potential in the monitoring of the border intrusion, structural healthy, anti-stealing of pipeline and so on, because of its simple configuration, fast response speed and distributed measuring ability. However, it is difficult to distinguish two vibrations with the same frequency for POTDR because the signal induced by the first vibration would bury the other vibration induced signal. This paper proposes a simple method to resolve this problem in POTDR by analyzing the phase of the vibration induced signal. The effectiveness of this method in distinguishing two vibrations with the same frequency for POTDR is proved by simulation.

Abstract:A real-time detection and self-control phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometer (φ-OTDR) distributed sensor system is demonstrated. The system software can get the real-time data stream to detect the disturbance and self-control the Mach-Zehnder electro-optical modulator (MZEOM). In this way, the system can operate continuously and compensate the drift of the MZEOM automatically.

Abstract:A distributed fiber sensing system based on ultraweak FBGs (UWFBGs) assisted polarization optical time-domain reflectometry (POTDR) is proposed for load and vibration sensing with improved signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and sensitivity. UWFBGs with reflectivity higher than Rayleigh scattering coefficient per pulse are induced into a POTDR system to increase the intensity of the back signal. The performance improvement of the system has been studied. The numerical analysis has shown that the SNR and sensitivity of the system can be effectively improved by integrating UWFBGs along the whole sensing fiber, which has been clearly proven by the experiment. The experimental results have shown that by using UWFBGs with 1.1 × 10-5 reflectivity and 10-m interval distance, the SNR is improved by 11 dB, and the load and vibration sensitivities of the POTDR are improved by about 10.7 and 9 dB, respectively.
Measurement of Multiple Vibration Points by Using POTDR

Abstract:An improved data processing and analysis method is proposed to realize simultaneous monitor of multiple vibrations using polarization optical time domain reflectometry system. In our method, a differential trace of the frequency component along the fiber is got by doing subtraction of the distance traces with different number of vibrations at a certain frequency, and the vibrations vibrating at different time can be located by analyzing the response power variation of the differential trace. For multiple vibration points vibrating with the same frequency and at the same time, multiple vibration events can also be distinguished by extracting the modulated frequency component, and the frequency component is obtained at the starting or ceasing state of the vibrations because the initial phases of vibration sources are unsteady and different. With our method, a POTDR sensing system which can simultaneously monitor multiple vibration points over 3km with 10m spatial resolution is demonstrated.

Abstract:Typical polarization optical time-domain reflectometer (POTDR) with single analyzer can hardly detect external disturbance along the fiber at certain points of fiber, because the analyzer is insensitive to state of polarization (SOP) change of optical signal at these points. It causes POTDR to be ineffective in locating the start point of disturbance precisely and in detecting disturbance at the end of the fiber when analyzer is insensitive to SOP change at the end point. So it is proposed to use two analyzers in POTDR system in this paper. The principle of polarized optical pulse passing analyzers of different SOP directions is presented. Finally the angle between the two SOP directions of the two analyzers chosen in the paper is pi/4. Simulation and experiment using two analyzers in POTDR were conducted to verify the theory. The obtained research results are in accordance with the principle.

Abstract:A high-performance quantitative detection distributed optical fiber sensing technology based on Rayleigh scattering is proposed and studied.Based on the phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometer (Φ-OTDR),a direct detection coherent optical time-domain reflectometer (COTDR) sensing system is set up,by combining the narrow-linewidth laser with microwave electro-optical modulation to obtain optical frequency-shift precisely.The sensing quantity (temperature or strain) can be obtained from the change of the Rayleigh scattering light interference pattern generated by the frequency shift of the light source.The sensing principle of the direct-detecting COTDR system is studied,with simulating and analyzing the COTDR sensing process and the correlation characteristics of the scattering signals.On the basis of theoretical analysis,the direct-detecting COTDR experimental system is built,and 25 km distributed optical fiber temperature sensing experiment is realized.The experiment results show that the COTDR experimental system can measure the temperature change of 0.1 ℃ at the end of the 25 km sensing fiber.

Abstract:The influence to the sensing performance of polarization optical time domain reflectometer (POTDR) by increasing the optical pulse width is analyzed based on wave-plate model and Muller matrices. Simulation and experimental results show that the ability of POTDR to sense external perturbation can be improved by increasing the pulse width of probe light, although the backscattered signal would be temporally depolarized. The depolarization effect is not a limitation to increase the pulse width to improve the signal-to-noise ratio for POTDR. The beat length of fiber can be taken as the critical value for the increase of pulse width.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel method of disturbance detection by using image morphology to solve the challenging multi-point detection problems in polarization-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (P-OTDR), which restrict its practical applications greatly. The new methodology is processed by accumulating the temporally differentiated OTDR traces and building up a two-dimensional temporal-spatial SOP evolving graph, and then using edge detection and automatic-clustering, adopted from imaging processing and statistical classification techniques, to distinguish different disturbance points and pinpoint their locations. The proposed method proved better performance than the conventional direct differentiation method and the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) spectrum analysis. The location accuracy in particular, has improved significantly. Also, we present two typical field applications of this representative Distributed Optical Fiber Sensor (DOFS) in the electric power industry, for on-line safety monitoring of both the long-distance power transmission cables buried underground and those overhead. It demonstrated that P-OTDR is a promising technology for on-line safety monitoring of long-distance power transmission lines and optical fiber communication cables, due to its outstanding advantages, such as fully passive operation, electro-magnetic interference immunity (EMI), corrosion resistance, good reliability, and more especially its long-distance single-end detection ability, quantitative measurement capability and moderate sensibility for disturbance detection.

Abstract:Current health monitoring and early warning in rapidly growing electric vehicles (EVs) and smart grids (SGs) are facing significant challenges to urgent demands of real-time, passive, as well as wireless detection. In this article, a passive sensing-wireless transmitting scheme is proposed to synchronously realize passive sensing and wireless transmitting of signals in dc current monitoring. A dc current sensing theory with piecewise-constant characteristics is established to support the above scheme. A dc galvanometer, mainly composed of a microstrip patch integrated magnetic cantilever, is developed and fabricated to demonstrate the proposed scheme and the established theory. When the applied dc current ranges from 0 to 16 A, the maximum detection sensitivity of 12.19 ppm/A is experimentally obtained, while a higher detection sensitivity can be theoretically achieved via adjusting sensing performance relevant coefficients. A miniaturized microstrip patch, with an H-slotted bow-tie geometry, down to 34.12% of the commonly utilized rectangle one, is designed to meet the different needs of various industrial scenarios. The proposed passive sensing-wireless transmitting scheme and the developed dc galvanometer are expected to provide a new solution to health monitoring and early warning in EVs and SGs.

Abstract:Accurately measuring weak electric currents in the order of microamperes in a noninvasive manner is crucial yet challenging for industrial electronics. In this work, we first fabricated low-noise magnetic field sensor chips based on the tunneling magnetoresistive (TMR) effect. A composite free layer and a three-step annealing process were used to improve the performance, resulting in a sensitivity of 30 V/V/T (3 mV/V/Oe), nonlinearity below 0.5%, and reduction of the noise density from /V/ Hz to /V/ Hz at 1 Hz, in comparison with the traditional two-step annealing process. We then developed a weak-current sensing module with a differential design using two TMR sensor chips arranged antiparallelly. Equipped with a magnetic flux concentration structure and a low-noise signal processing circuit, we demonstrated transient measurement of weak current well below 1 mA with a wide bandwidth of dc-to-16 kHz, a dynamic range of ±150 mA (51 dB), and a rapid response time of . The limit-of-detection (LoD) of the sensing module for dc and ac current reached 800 and (rms), respectively, which is about 30% lower than the single-chip design. This weak-current sensor based on differential TMR has the potential to be useful for industrial applications in smart grids and green energy.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate an ultrasensitive integrated photonic current sensor that incorporates a silicon-based single-mode-multimode-single-mode waveguide (SMSW) structure. This kind of SMSW structure is placed over a direct current carrying power resistor, which produces Joule’s heat to change the temperature of the SMSW and further results in the change of the effective refractive index between different propagating modes. Interference occurs when the modes recombine at the second single mode waveguide. Finally, the current variation is measured by monitoring the shift in the output spectrum of the multimode interferometer. In low current, the wavelength shift has almost linear dependence: Δλ∝Ic. This effect can be used as a current sensor with a slope efficiency of 4.24 nm/A in the range of 0–200 mA.
