Abstract:Interest in homogeneous gold catalysis has undergone a marked increase. As strong yet air-and moisturetolerant pi-acids, cationic gold(I) complexes have been shown to catalyze diverse transformations of alkenes, alkynes and allenes, opening new opportunities for chemical synthesis. The development of efficient asymmetric variants is required in order to take full advantage of the preparative potential of these transformations. During the last few years, the chemical community has achieved tremendous success in the area. This review highlights the updated progress (2011-2015) in enantioselective gold catalysis. The discussion is classified according to the pi-bonds activated by gold(I), in an order of alkynes, allenes and alkenes. Other gold activation modes, such as sigma-Lewis acid catalyzed reactions and transformations of diazo compounds are also discussed.

Abstract:Axially enantioselective binuclear gold(I) catalysts fly as swallowtail butterflies around a mechanical hand providing a chiral environment. The gold microchip on the hand symbolizes the crucial role of gold catalysis in alkyne activation. Using the gold-catalyzed condensation of amine and diyne-ene, the first example of enantioselective 1,2-dihydropyridine synthesis through a formal [3+2+1] fashion is reported by Xin Hong, Xiaodong Shi et al. in their Research Article (e202305409).

Abstract:Over the past two decades, gold catalysis has witnessed a remarkable surge fueling the advent of enantioselective gold catalysis. Based on the oxidation states of the gold complex involved in catalysis, the reactivities can be classified into three major types i.e. gold(I) catalysis, gold(III) catalysis, and gold(I)/gold(III) catalysis. Enantioselective catalysis for each reactivity mode of gold demands the rational design of chiral ligands, along with their well-thought fine-tuning for the continuous evolution of this field. This review is planned to provide a comprehensive overview of the progress made in the design and development of chiral ligands for asymmetric gold catalysis.

Abstract:Homogeneous gold catalysis has demonstrated the preponderant capability of realizing a broad range of synthetically versatile alkyne functionalization over the last two decades.Though catalytic asymmetric alkyne transformation has focused on the principle of using gold catalysts either associated with chi-ral phosphine ligand or combined with chiral counterion,a variety of breakthroughs have been reported with the application of gold-complex and chiral organocatalyst cooperative catalysis strategy,which could enable the challenging transformations that cannot be realized by mono-catalysis with excellent stereos-electivity.This review will cover two general protocols in this field,including relay catalysis and synergis-tic catalysis,with emphasis on the detailed cooperative catalysts models to illustrate the roles of the two catalysts and highlight the potential synthetic opportunities offered by asymmetric cooperative catalysis.

Abstract:There has been a surge of interest in using supported gold catalysts in green synthesis and clean reactions. Complementary to their traditional platinum-group metal counterparts, catalysis using nano-gold offers a unique opportunity to obtain target products in high yields, control the chemoselectivity, and access more complex organic molecules in a compact, atom- and step-efficient way. Therefore, it has emerged as a hot topic in the field of green catalysis. This review summarizes our research progress in the area of nano-Au catalyzed green reactions and their versatility, application in clean chemical synthesis, especially for the construction of N-containing compounds as well as valorization of biomass-derived feedstocks via gold catalyzed transformations.

Abstract:The formation of valuable chiral skeletons through asymmetric gold catalysis has made considerable progress due to the unrivaled affinity of gold complexes with multiple carbon–carbon bonds. The renaissance of chiral ligands in recent decades has enabled the elaborate design of chiral gold complexes, which are of great significance to control chiral formation in these catalytic reactions. Therefore, this review intends to highlight the design and central role of versatile chiral ligands in asymmetric gold catalysis. Specifically, the seminal applications of various chiral ligands with representative examples in various gold-catalyzed asymmetric reactions are comprehensively explored. In addition, the reaction mechanisms are mentioned when the crucial interactions between ligands and activated substrates are introduced. Furthermore, the applications of enantioselective gold catalysis in the construction of chiral functional organic materials and drug molecules are also presented.

Abstract:Au(I)/Au(III) redox catalysis, also known as redox gold catalysis, has evolved as a new technique in the past decade, opening up possibilities for the cross-coupling and 1,2-difunctioalization reactions of C–C multiple bonds that were previously inaccessible with gold(I) or gold(III) catalysis. However, the enantioselective Au(I)/Au(III) redox catalysis was missing until recently. The research group of Patil and Shi independently developed new hemilabile chiral (P,N)-ligands to achieve enantioselective redox gold catalysis for the first time.

Abstract:Transition metal‐catalyzed Suzuki and Heck reactions are two of the most common carbon‐carbon bond formation reactions. Gold, unlike other transition metals (Pd, Ni, and Cu), offers unique reactivity profiles, and has emerged as an efficient tool in the field of synthetic organic chemistry. This mini‐review focused on the recent work in gold‐catalyzed Heck and Suzuki‐type reactions, especially by photocatalysts or ligand design, which show reactivities and features distinct from other transition metals. These discoveries will further facilitate the development of gold redox catalysis as well as applications in organic synthesis, biochemistry, and medicinal chemistry.

Abstract:Carbophilic gold carbenes generated by the decomposition of α-diazoesters are highly reactive towards enamides, undergoing an unprecedented aza-ene-type reaction. In their Communication on page 3247 ff., S.-W. Luo, L.-Z. Gong, and co-workers show that the presence of 0.1 mol % of a chiral Brønsted acid is sufficient to obtain synthetically significant γ-keto esters in high yields and with excellent enantioselectivities.

Abstract:Atomically precise gold nanoclusters provide great opportunities to explore the relationship between the structure and properties of nanogold catalysts. A nanocluster consists of a metal core and a surface ligand shell, and both the core and shell have significant effects on the catalytic properties. Thanks to their precise structures, the active metal site of the clusters can be readily identified and the effects of ligands on catalysis can be disclosed. In this Minireview, we summarize recent advances in catalytic research of gold nanoclusters, emphasizing four strategies for constructing open metal sites, including by post‐treatment, the bulky ligands strategy, the surface geometric mismatch method, and heteroatom doping procedures. We also discuss the effects of ligands on the catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability of gold cluster catalysts. Finally, we present future challenges relating to gold cluster catalysis.

Abstract:In the past decade, there have been many extraordinary advances in the development of gold-catalyzed enantioselective annulations, such as cycloadditions, cyclizations, cycloisomerizations, and tandem annulations, which are of particular interest owing to their potential for rapid construction of optically active hetero- and carbocyclic molecules. This Review summarizes the methods to construct chiral cyclic compounds by gold-catalyzed enantioselective annulations reported since 2005. The Review is organized according to the general annulation types catalyzed by chiral gold complexes or chiral gold salts, which have four main types (cycloadditions, cyclizations of C-C multiple bonds with tethered nucleophiles, cycloisomerization or cyclization of enynes, and tandem annulations), as well as some other strategies. The general reaction mechanisms of each subcategory, key intermediates for some unusual transformations, and the application of several novel ligands and chiral gold salts are also discussed.

Abstract:Gold(I) catalysis has been recognized as a valuable tool for the unique transformation of multiple carbon-carbon bonds. Enantioselective π-catalysis based on gold(I) complexes is, however, still underdeveloped due to lack of privileged ligands. Herein, we present an accessible method to a new family of stable yet catalytically active chiral NHC-Au(I)-Cl complexes. The key to preserving a simultaneous fine balance between reactivity and stability in this newly developed family appears to be sterically hindered, but conformationally flexible NHC ligands. These could be easily accessed on a multigram scale by merging sterically hindered anilines with commercially available amino alcohols and amines via a four-steps synthetic sequence without the need for chromatographic purification. Further investigations of the catalytic activity of NHC-Au-Cl complexes identified the OH functionality incorporated into the NHC core as crucial for the level of enantioselectivity as well as the TsO- anion responsible for the activation of NHC-Au(I)-Cl. Finally, NMR studies and X-ray investigations revealed for the first time that the widely accepted ion metathesis (NHC-Au-Cl to NHC-Au-OSO2R) responsible for the activation of NHC-Au-Cl complexes does not take place (or it is very slow) in commonly used MeNO2 in contrast to DCM.

Abstract:A highly enantioselective carboalkoxylation of alkynes catalyzed by cationic (DTBM-MeO-Biphep)gold(I) complexes is reported. Various optically active beta-alkoxyindanone derivatives were obtained in good yields with high enantioselectivities. Furthermore, this methodology was extended to the enantioselective synthesis of 3-methoxycyclopentenones. The reaction is proposed to proceed through an enantioselective cyclization of intermediates containing vinylgold(I) and prochiral oxocarbenium moieties.

Abstract:Enantioselective transition metal catalysis is an area very much at the forefront of contemporary synthetic research. The development of processes that enable the efficient synthesis of enantiopure compounds is of unquestionable importance to chemists working within the many diverse fields of the central science. Traditional approaches to solving this challenge have typically relied on leveraging repulsive steric interactions between chiral ligands and substrates in order to raise the energy of one of the diastereomeric transition states over the other. By contrast, this Review examines an alternative tactic in which a set of attractive noncovalent interactions operating between transition metal ligands and substrates are used to control enantioselectivity. Examples where this creative approach has been successfully applied to render fundamental synthetic processes enantioselective are presented and discussed. In many of the cases examined, the ligand scaffold has been carefully designed to accommodate these attractive interactions, while in others, the importance of the critical interactions was only elucidated in subsequent computational and mechanistic studies. Through an exploration and discussion of recent reports encompassing a wide range of reaction classes, we hope to inspire synthetic chemists to continue to develop asymmetric transformations based on this powerful concept.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.
