Density Functional Theory Study of CO2 Hydrogenation on Transition-Metal-Doped Cu(211) Surfaces

Abstract:The massive emission of CO2 has caused a series of environmental problems, including global warming, which exacerbates natural disasters and human health. Cu-based catalysts have shown great activity in the reduction of CO2, but the mechanism of CO2 activation remains ambiguous. In this work, we performed density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the hydrogenation of CO2 on Cu(211)-Rh, Cu(211)-Ni, Cu(211)-Co, and Cu(211)-Ru surfaces. The doping of Rh, Ni, Co, and Ru was found to enhance CO2 hydrogenation to produce COOH. For CO2 hydrogenation to produce HCOO, Ru plays a positive role in promoting CO dissociation, while Rh, Ni, and Co increase the barriers. These results indicate that Ru is the most effective additive for CO2 reduction in Cu-based catalysts. In addition, the doping of Rh, Ni, Co, and Ru alters the electronic properties of Cu, and the activity of Cu-based catalysts was subsequently affected according to differential charge analysis. The analysis of Bader charge shows good predictions for CO2 reduction over Cu-based catalysts. This study provides some fundamental aids for the rational design of efficient and stable CO2-reducing agents to mitigate CO2 emission.
An Efficient Biochar Adsorbent for CO2 Capture: Combined Experimental and Theoretical Study on the Promotion Mechanism of N-doping

Abstract:The N-doped carbon material is one of the most efficient adsorption materials in the field of carbon capture. Although many N-doped carbon materials have been prepared for CO2 adsorption in recent years, the promotion mechanism of N-doping has not been clearly proposed. In this study, a series of N-doped biochars were suc-cessfully prepared by a facile solvent-free method. Among them, the biochar prepared with corncob powder, K2CO3 and urea at 800 degrees C showed the highest adsorption capacity (5.69 mmol/g at 0 degrees C and 1 bar) and selectivity (38.24 at CO2/N2 = 10/90). The biochar also exhibited excellent thermal stability and cycle performance. Notable, correlation analysis showed that ultra-micropores were the decisive factor for CO2 adsorption at low temperatures; nevertheless, the effect of N-doping would gradually appear with the increase of adsorption temperature. By fitting the kinetics of CO2 adsorption, it was found experimentally that N-doping could increase the activation energy between biochar and CO2. Next, through constructing biochar models with different ni-trogen contents and different N-doping forms, it was found from theoretical calculation that N-doping could increase the adsorption energy between CO2 and biochar. Further theoretical analysis found that N-doping mainly enhanced the dispersion interaction between the biochar surface and CO2 to improve the adsorption performance, and the higher the nitrogen content, the more obvious the improvement. This work not only prepared a N-doped biochar with excellent CO2 adsorption performance from waste biomass, but also revealed the promotion mechanism of N-doping in detail by combining theoretical calculations with experiments.

Abstract:Here we show that the introduction of N into a carbon surface facilitates the hydrogen-bonding interactions between the carbon surface and CO2 molecules, which accounts for the superior CO2 uptake of the N-doped activated carbons. This new finding challenges the long-held viewpoint that acid-base interactions between N-containing basic functional groups and acidic CO2 gas are responsible for the enhanced CO2 capture capacity of N-doped carbons.
Oxygen-Doped Red Carbon Nitride: Enhanced Charge Separation and Light Absorption for Robust CO2 Photoreduction

Abstract:Utilizing artificial photosynthesis for the conversion of CO2 into value-added fuels has been recognized as a promising strategy for the ever-increasing energy crisis and the greenhouse effect. Herein, the element doping engineering of red spherical g-C3N4 having oxygen bonded with compositional carbon (C-O-C) for CO2 photoreduction has been explored to address this challenge. The C-O bond was formed by hydrothermal treatment with dicyandiamide and 1,3,5-trichlorotriazine. The experimental and DFT results displayed the optimum oxygen substitution sites and demonstrated that the oxygen doping greatly improved the light utilization efficiency, CO2 affinity, and charge carrier transfer, which enhanced photoreduction efficiency of CO2. The evolution rates of CO (47.2 μmol g-1) and CH4 (9.1 μmol g-1) using O-CN were much higher than that of bulk-CN without a cocatalyst. The main reason was the contribution of the O 2p orbital to the conduction band (CB) and valence band of O-CN, which effectively reduced the electron mass, facilitating electron/hole separation and enhancing its fluidity. Furthermore, the Fermi level also shifted to the bottom of the CB, leading to higher electron density, which further improved the CO2 reduction ability. Our study marks an important step for developing high-performance photocatalysts for reduction of CO2.

Abstract:Developing adsorbent with high CO2 capacity and selectivity is of great importance to deal with industrial exhaust emissions and global warming. Herein, we prepared a series porous carbon with rich narrow micropores and abundant nitrogen content through a facile one-step synthesis method, which enable remarkable CO2 uptake (5.74 mmol/g at 25 degrees C and 1.0 bar) and superior CO2/N-2 selectivity (322-66). Such capture performance is much higher than that of other reported carbon adsorbents, and is directly related to the synergistic effect of narrow micropores and surface nitrogen active sites. As demonstrated by a set of systematic theoretical calculations including giant canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the narrow micropore favors the diffusion of CO2 molecules and provides large interior for interaction between active sites and CO2 molecules, thus enhancing the CO2 adsorption. Moreover, the as-doped nitrogen active sites show much higher binding energy to CO2 than N-2. This strong affinity between the surface and CO2 provides a good explanation for the high selectivity obtained. These results will pave a clearer way for the design and synthesis of carbon materials with high CO2 adsorption performance.

Abstract:Owing to the exponential increase in human populace and anthropogenic activities, there has been a significant release of CO 2 into the atmosphere, precipitating environmental quandaries such as the greenhouse effect. Consequently, the sequestration of CO 2 emerges as an imperative endeavor. While prior research has illuminated the potential of surface-modified biochar to augment its sequestration efficacy via avenues such as activation and nitrogen doping, scant attention has been devoted to diatomic modification strategies. In this investigation, a novel array of nitrogen and sulfur co-doped porous carbons were engineered, utilizing discarded bamboo shoot husks as a carbonaceous substrate, thiourea as a dual-source dopant for nitrogen and sulfur, and potassium carbonate as an activating agent, through an intricate triphasic synthesis procedure. The study meticulously evaluated their CO 2 sequestration capabilities, scrutinizing the influence of activator concentration and thermal activation conditions on the adsorption dynamics. The resultant N, S co-doped activated carbons manifested superlative CO 2 capture capacities. A salient specimen, designated BSNC-800–2, showcased an unparalleled CO 2 adsorptive uptake of 5.93 mmol/g at 0 °C and 3.83 mmol/g at 25 °C, attributable to its expansive specific surface area and substantive microporous volume. It was discerned that the interplay between the dopant concentrations and the proportion of narrow micropores was pivotal in modulating CO 2 adsorption efficacy. Furthermore, these samples exhibited a suite of remarkable CO 2 adsorption attributes, encompassing robust cyclic stability, elevated CO 2 /N 2 selectivity, and a moderate heat of adsorption. Isothermal adsorption model simulations at 25 °C across all samples demonstrated a high fidelity to empirical observations when aligned with the Freundlich isotherm. Thermodynamic assessments posited that the sequestration of CO 2 via the nitrogen-sulfur co-doped bamboo-derived porous carbons proceeded as a spontaneous and exothermic process, thereby corroborating the adsorbents' proficiency in CO 2 entrapment. This study is anticipated to inspire new methods for synthesizing nitrogen-sulfur co-doped carbon and provide fresh insights into CO 2 adsorption from flue gas using hetero-doped carbon.

Abstract:N-doped carbon (NC) materials have emerged as attractive supports for metal-based catalysts, enhancing their catalytic performance through the metal–support interactions. However, gaining fundamental insights into the metal–support interaction between NC support and Sn metal sites for improving the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) performance remains challenging. Abstract:Chemical doping of nitrogen into carbon framework has been demonstrated effective for gas molecules (e.g. CO2, SO2, NOR) adsorption. Here we report a series of nitrogen-doped porous carbons with controllable doping level (4.25-10.23%) and consistent pore structure (surface area around 1000 m(2)/g) by a co-assembly method. Based on the unique structure, SO2 was used as probe molecule to independently study the N doping effect on the SO2-carbon surface interactions from both experimental and calculation aspects. The results indicate that SO2 adsorption capacities are proportional to the nitrogen contents and the sample with 10.2% nitrogen content gives the highest SO2 adsorption capacity of 48.3 mg/g, 2.95 times higher than non-doped carbon. Moreover, combining the literature data with our studies indicates that both pore structure and N species play a contribution in SO2 adsorption process. For the NPC materials with similar pore structure, the increase of N contents improves the SO2 adsorption area in pores of N doped carbon mainly by enhancing the physisorption on various locations of carbon surface including basal plane and edge positions. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that nitrogen atom itself cannot serve as active site for SO2 adsorption. The role of nitrogen doping is to remodel the local electronic density, the polarity of carbon atoms as well as charge distribution of carbon surface, which induces the enhanced SO2 adsorption. Revealing the Underlying Absorption and Emission Mechanism of Nitrogen Doped Graphene Quantum Dots.

Abstract:Nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) hold promising application in electronics and optoelectronics because of their excellent photo-stability, tunable photoluminescence and high quantum yield. However, the absorption and emission mechanisms have been debated for years. Here, by employing time-dependent density functional theory, we demonstrate that the different N-doping types and positions give rise to different absorption and emission behaviors, which successfully addresses the inconsistency observed in different experiments. Specifically, center doping creates mid-states, rendering non-fluorescence, while edge N-doping modulates the energy levels of excited states and increases the radiation transition probability, thus enhancing fluorescence strength. More importantly, the even hybridization of frontier orbitals between edge N atoms and GQDs leads to a blue-shift of both absorption and emission spectra, while the uneven hybridization of frontier orbitals induces a red-shift. Solvent effects on N-GQDs are further explored by the conductor-like screening model and it is found that strong polarity of the solvent can cause a red-shift and enhance the intensity of both absorption and emission spectra.
N-doping enabled defect-engineering of MoS2 for enhanced and selective adsorption of CO2: A DFT approach

Abstract:A density functional theory study was conducted to analyze CO2 adsorption on defective and non-defective MoS2 surfaces with or without nitrogen doping. The MoS2_1VS and MoS2_1VMo_3NS were found exhibiting outstanding adsorption activity and stability, which is linked to an enhanced electron charge on the surface in the presence of vacancies and N species that alters strength and type of interactions with CO2 molecules. Results showed the dissociative chemisorption of CO2 on the MoS2_1Vs and a significantly enhanced physisorption of CO2 on the MoS2_1VMo_3NS, which displays an adsorption energy of −1.818 eV compared with −0.139 eV of the pristine MoS2 surface. Meanwhile, the MoS2_1Vs exhibits an excellent selective adsorption of CO2 over N2 and H2O, with the highest adsorption ratio of 5.1 and 3.5, respectively. Partial dissociation of CO2 to CO over the MoS2_1Vs is also observed and attributed to increased covalent attractions at the vacant site, while the improved CO2 physisorption over the MoS2_1VMo_3NS is attributed to the enhanced electrostatic interactions at the vacancy site due to N doping. These findings are confirmed by the computed vibrational frequencies of CO2 bound on these surfaces. The N-doping enabled defect engineering of MoS2 is proved effective and enhanced selective adsorption of CO2.

Abstract:A comprehensive understanding of the effect of N doping on CO oxidation over FeS2 is prominently meaningful for fabricating a low-cost heteroatom catalyst with an optimum structure and satisfactory activity. Herein, periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to investigate possible reaction mechanisms for CO oxidation over FeS2 and N doped FeS2 (N-FeS2). Two kinds of active oxygen species are observed on the catalyst surfaces, including the adsorbed O2 and atomic O. The results show that the CO first prefers to react with the atomic O formed by O2 dissociation (FeS2) and the adsorbed O2 (N-FeS). Comparing to FeS2, the energy barriers of CO oxidation over N-FeS2 are lower, which indicates that N doping can improve the activity for CO oxidation. The analyses of electronic structure evidence that N doping can modify the electronic density of the adjacent Fe atoms and thus form favorable electronic configurations for O2 adsorption, which facilitates O2 activation and the succeeding CO oxidation. The whole favorable CO oxidation cycle for N-FeS2 consists of three stages: O2 adsorption → first CO oxidation → second CO oxidation. Our findings can provide a fundamental understanding to develop N doped catalysts with high activity for CO abatement.

Enhanced N-doping in mesoporous carbon for efficient electrocatalytic CO 2 conversion

Abstract:The capability of electrocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) using nitrogen (N)-doped carbon strongly depends on the N-doping level and their types. In this work, we developed a strategy to generate mesoporous N-doped carbon frameworks with tunable configurations and contents of N dopants, by using a secondary doping process via the treatment of N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent. The obtained mesoporous N-doped carbon (denoted as MNC-D) served as an efficient electrocatalyst for electroreduction of CO 2 to CO. A high Faradaic efficiency of ∼ 92% and a partial current density for CO of −6.8 mA·cm −2 were achieved at a potential of −0.58 V vs. RHE. Electrochemical analyses further revealed that the active sites within the N-doped carbon catalysts were the pyridinic N and defects generated by the DMF treatment, which enhanced the activation and adsorption CO 2 molecules. Our study suggests a new approach to develop efficient carbon-based catalysts for potential scalable CO 2 RR to fuels and chemicals.
Synergistic Effects of B-F/B-S and Nitrogen Vacancy Co-Doping on G-C3n4 and Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction Mechanisms: A DFT Study

Abstract:Nonmetallic co-doping and surface hole construction are simple and efficient strategies for improving the photocatalytic activity and regulating the electronic structure of g-C3N4. Here, the g-C3N4 catalysts with B-F or B-S co-doping combined with nitrogen vacancies (Nv) are designed. Compared to the pristine g-C3N4, the direction of the excited electron orbit for the B-F-co-doped system is more matching (N2pz→C2pz), facilitating the separation of electrons and holes. Simultaneously, the introduced nitrogen vacancy can further reduce the bandgap by generating impurity states, thus improving the utilization rate of visible light. The doped S atoms can also narrow the bandgap of the B-S-Nv-co-doped g-C3N4, which originates from the p-orbital hybridization between C, N, and S atoms, and the impurity states are generated by the introduction of N vacancies. The doping of B-F-Nv and B-S-Nv exhibits a better CO2 reduction activity with a reduced barrier for the rate-determining step of around 0.2 eV compared to g-C3N4. By changing F to S, the origin of the rate-determining step varies from *CO2→*COOH to *HCHO→*OCH3, which eventually leads to different products of CH3OH and CH4, respectively.

Abstract:Comprehensive Summary Electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to fuels and chemicals possesses huge potential to alleviate current environmental crisis. Heteroatom doping in metal‐nitrogen‐carbon (M‐N‐C) single‐atom catalysts (SACs) has been found capable to promote the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). However, the origin of the enhanced activity is still elusive. Here, we report that sulfur‐doped cobalt‐nitrogen‐carbon single‐atom catalyst (Co1‐SNC) exhibits superior CO2RR performance compared to sulfur‐free counterpart (Co1‐NC). On the basis of in situ attenuated total reflectance surface‐enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (ATR‐SEIRAS), kinetic isotope effect (KIE) and theoretical calculation, it is demonstrated that sulfur doping can promote water activation, elevate the d‐band center of Co active site, and reduce the free energy of *COOH intermediate formation. However, the high recombination rate of electron-hole pairs, low specific surface area and weak light absorption of bulk CN synthesized by the traditional one-step thermal polymerization method seriously restrict its photocatalytic performance and practical application. To enhance the photocatalytic performance of CN, doping and surface modification strategies are usually employed to tune the band gap of carbon nitride and improve the separation of carriers. In this paper, the research progress of different methods to modify CN in recent years is introduced, and the mechanisms of improving the photocatalytic performance are mainly analyzed. Typical modification methods are mainly divided into metal doping, non-metal doping, co-doping and surface-functionalized modification. Some characterization methods that can analyze the doping state and surface modification are also discussed as examples. Finally, the difficulties that need to be addressed through modified CN photocatalysts and the directions for future research are pointed out.

Abstract:Appropriate adsorption strength and modes of intermediates on catalysts and the reaction kinetic energy barrier directly determine the selectivity and productivity of final products during CO2 electroreduction. This work systematically reveals the mechanisms for enhanced CO2 electroreduction on nitrogen-doped Cu2O (N-Cu2O) catalyst by in-situ surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and theoretical calculation. The introduction of N into Cu2O can significantly enhance the CO2 adsorption capacity, binding strength of key intermediates and increase the local pH value, resulting in two-fold enhancement of CO and C2H4 production as compared to bare Cu2O. Meanwhile, the protonation step is promoted, making the formation of COOH center dot & nbsp; quickly and earlier. Therefore, the adsorbed CO(2)(center dot)(-& nbsp;)intermediate formation is produced more rapidly, and the rate-determining step is transferred, continually facilitating the electroreduction of CO2. This study is inspiring in designing high-performance electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction.
CO2 selective adsorption over O2 on N−doped activated carbon: Experiment and quantum chemistry study

Abstract:Utilizing flue gas as feedstock for CO2 electro−reduction systems is a promising technology to address problems caused by excessive CO2 emissions. However, the O2 contained in the flue gas has a significant adverse effect on the CO2 reduction. Herein, a facile strategy was proposed to suppress the influence of O2 by constructing a CO2−enriched region. N−doping was demonstrated to be an efficient way to enhance CO2 adsorption selectivity over O2 on activated carbon. The N−doped activated carbon achieved 3.7 times increase in CO2 adsorption selectivity over O2 than that before modification under simulated flue gas atmosphere (75 %N2 + 15 %CO2 + 10 %O2). The distinction in adsorption mechanism between CO2 and O2 was revealed by quantum chemistry study. The increased polarity of the carbon materials favored CO2 adsorption and had less impact on O2 adsorption. The electrostatic interaction between CO2 and carbon material was demonstrated to be enhanced after the introduction of pyridinic N and pyrrolic N, which led to an improvement in the CO2 adsorption capacity. The dispersion interaction, which fully regulated O2 adsorption, was weakened due to the deviation of the O2 adsorption position. This study provided a reference for the subsequent development of CO2 selective adsorption materials.

Abstract:The heteroatom-doped porous carbon is an effective strategy to improve the CO2 uptake. However, there are obvious contradictory conclusions in the previous reports regarding the influences of nitrogen groups and pore sizes. Besides this, previous researches about CO2 capture and CO2/N2 selectivity on nitrogen-doped carbon materials often ignore the effect of oxygen-containing functional groups. Herein, we successfully synthesized rich oxygen and nitrogen doped carbon materials by hydrothermal treatment using tobacco stem and ethylenediamine, respectively. The obtained porous carbons exhibit high surface area (906–2940 m2 g−1). From the experimental results, at 1 bar, NC600 exhibits the superior CO2 adsorption of 4.33 mmol g−1 and 6.54 mmol g−1 at 25 °C and 0 °C, respectively. Based on GCMC simulation, we can roughly estimate that the contribution of pore structure and functional groups is 62% and 38%, respectively. Nitrogen and oxygen-doped porous carbons exerts a greater influence on the CO2/N2 selectivity because of the electrostatic interactions enhancement between carbon surface and CO2 molecules. The study is expected to better understand the role of functional groups and pore structure on CO2 capture and CO2/N2 selectivity.
