Abstract:Visible light along with 1 mol% eosin Y catalyzed the direct oxysulfonylation of alkenes with sulfinic acids via a photoredox process which has been developed at room temperature under transition-metal-free conditions. The present reaction provides a highly efficient approach to diverse beta-ketosulfones in moderate to good yields. It should provide a promising synthesis candidate for the formation of diverse and useful beta-ketosulfone derivatives in the fields of synthetic and pharmaceutical chemistry.

The reaction is characterized by a high functional group tolerance and good yields. It can be improved by the presence of a ruthenium photocatalyst. Abstract:Herein, we report a visible-light-induced, copper-catalyzed regiodivergent sulfonylation of oxime esters with sodium sulfinates under mild conditions. The aliphatic C(sp3)-H bond in α-aryl-α-alkyl oxime esters reacted via a 1,3-hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) process and affording β-ketosulfones. Meanwhile, γ,δ-unsaturated oxime esters resulted in sulfonyl-functionalized pyrroline via an intramolecular olefin aminosulfonylation and 5-exo-trig cyclization procedure. Notably, this redox-neutral, regiovergent alkyl-SO2R coupling reaction features mild conditions, free from external reducing and oxidizing agents, low catalyst loading, broad substrate compatibility, and good functional group tolerance. Also, the reaction can be scaled up and trifluorobenzoic acid can be recovered. Mechanistic studies combined with computational analysis provide insight into the mechanism and the origins of the substitute-controlled regioselectivity.

Abstract:Intramolecular oxysulfonylation of alkenes with the insertion of sulfur dioxide promoted by visible light is developed. The combination of 4-substituted pent-4-en-1-ols, DABCO·(SO2)2, and aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborates under mild conditions in the presence of a photocatalyst provides sulfonated 2,2-disubstituted tetrahydrofurans in moderate to good yields. Moreover, this protocol can be further extended to 5-phenylhex-5-en-1-ol and [2-(prop-1-en-2-yl)phenyl]methanol for the construction of sulfonyl-containing tetrahydropyran and 1,3-dihydroisobenzofuran derivatives. Preliminary mechanistic studies show that the arylsulfonyl radical is the key intermediate in the reaction process.

Abstract:A copper/cobalt-catalyzed difunctionalization of alkenes with sulfonylazides and tert-butyl hydroperoxide has been achieved. This protocol provides an efficient and direct oxysulfonylation approach to β-ketosulfones and β-sulfonyl peroxides in moderate to good yields under mild conditions. This methodology applies sulfonylazides as a new sulfonyl radical source and features a wide substrate scope and good functional group tolerance.

Abstract:A convenient and sustainable method for synthesizing sulfonyl‐containing compounds through a catalyst‐free aqueous‐phase hydrosulfonylation of alkenes and alkynes with sulfonyl chlorides under visible light irradiation is presented. Unactivated alkenes, electron‐deficient alkenes, alkyl and aryl alkynes can be hydrosulfonylated with various sulfonyl chlorides at room temperature with excellent yields and geometric selectivities by using tris(trimethylsilyl)silane as a hydrogen atom donor and silyl radical precursor to activate sulfonyl chlorides. Mechanistic studies revealed that the photolysis of tris(trimethylsilyl)silane in aqueous solution to produce silyl radical is crucial for the success of this reaction.

Abstract:Herein, we disclose an efficient 3-component metal-free carbosulfonylation of alkynes with readily available alkyl carboxylic acids and arylsulfinates under visible light irradiation. This photochemical approach offers a broad substrate scope of highly functionalized alkyl sulfones under mild reaction conditions and without additives. Moreover, in this protocol we employ feedstock chemicals as starting materials and moderate diastereoselectivity is displayed. The utility of our methodology is highlighted by its application in the synthesis of sedum alkaloids. Mechanistic investigations into this transformation are described.

Abstract:We report visible light induced deoxygenation of sulfoxides to sulfides catalyzed by anthraquinone under irradiation at 430-440 nm at room temperature, employing cheap isopropanol as a green reducing agent. Key reaction parameters, including irradiating wave-length, reaction medium and photocatalyst, are probed. According this procedure, a variety of sulfoxides are deoxygenated to the corresponding sulfides in satisfactory yields. Based on the experimental results, a photocatalytic hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) pathway is proposed.

Abstract:Simple and readily available ketones have been identified to promote the visible-light-promoted aerobic oxidation of sulfides and sulfoxides to sulfones. We report a simple and environmental-friendly oxidation protocol of sulfides to sulfones. Various sulfides were efficiently oxidized into sulfones with O-2 as sustainable terminate oxidant, readily available thioxanthone as the photocatalyst and 3-pentanone (DEK) as the solvent. The protocol tolerates diverse functional groups, including halogens, ketone, ester, cyano, heterocycle and even cyclopropyl groups. The detection of the aerobic oxidation reaction in DEK by GC and HRMS disclosed that the key active intermediates were generated. (c) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A dioxygen-triggered oxosulfonylation/sulfonylation of unactivated olefins to achieve β-keto sulfones/sulfones has been developed. Interestingly, pluralistic mechanisms were found when different types of compounds were applied as substrates, and different products were achieved. The reaction is carried out with a high atomic efficiency in the absence of a metal and a catalyst at room temperature under an air atmosphere. Abstract:Abstract A strategy for sulfonylation of boronic acids with sulfonyl chlorides has been established via Suzuki‐type radical cross‐coupling. This approach allows for the synthesis of more than 50 sulfone examples enabled by photoredox catalysis under visible light radiation. Moreover, the title reaction is applied in late‐stage functionalization of bioactive molecules, and further transformation of the resulting sulfones into 2‐functionalized sulfones, borates, triphenylphosphine oxide and N ‐arylcarbazole can be also achieved.

Abstract:An efficient visible-light-assisted, copper-catalyzed sulfonylation of aryl halides with sulfinates is reported. In our protocol, a single ligand Cu<sup>I</sup> photocatalyst formed in situ was used in the photocatalytic transformation. Diverse organosulfones were obtained in moderate to good yields. This strategy demonstrates a promising approach toward the synthesis of diverse and useful organosulfones.

Abstract:We report herein a visible light sensitizer-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of thioethers, affording sulfoxides in good to excellent yields. The loading of the catalyst was as low as 0.1 mol%. The selectivity was excellent. Mechanism studies showed both singlet oxygen and superoxide radical anion were likely involved in this transformation.

Abstract:In visible light, sulfoximidoyl-containing hypervalent iodine reagents react with aryl alkynes to give N-alpha-ketoacylated sulfoximines in good to high yields. The process is metal- and base-free, providing the diketonic products without the use of highly oxygenated reagents such as peroxides. Results from mechanistic investigations suggest the intermediacy of radicals and reveal the importance of molecular oxygen.
