Abstract:A networked structural laboratories system for seismic simulation of structures is presented. It consists of an independent network based communication platform (NCP) and various applications based on NCP. The NCP was developed based on client/server concept along with a proposed data model and communication protocols. It is capable of transferring control and feedback data among computers connected by Internet that is a hierarchical network with ubiquitous deployment of middleboxes, such as firewalls and network address translators. Communication speed tests were conducted in various network environments. Applications for hybrid dynamic test of bridge and building structures have been developed and remote hybrid tests of structures were carried out among the Hunan University, the Harbin Institute of Technology, and the Tsinghua University.

Abstract:This paper presents a network platform developed for remote testing of scaled model or prototype structures and structural elements. The network platform, NetSLab, was developed based on the client/server concept along with a proposed data model and the communication protocols. The platform is capable of transferring the control and feedback data as well as signals among remotely located structural testing laboratories or computers connected by Internet. Several concepts were introduced to develop the platform and to provide relatively easy and friendly interface for applications and further enhancement. Trial and actual tests were successfully carried out at the Hunan University, China and the University of Southern California, USA. Models simulating bridge piers and piles or building substructures were subjected to recorded earthquake ground motions, and the tests were controlled remotely over the Internet using the platform.

Abstract:This article describes an Internet based laboratory (NETLAB) developed at Zhejiang University for electrical engineering education. A key feature of the project is the use of real experimental systems rather than simulation or virtual reality. NELTAB provides remote access to a wide variety of experiments, including not only basic electrical and electronic experiments but also many innovative control experiments. Students can effectively use the laboratory at any time and from anywhere. NETLAB has been in operation since July 2003.

Abstract:Remote hybrid testing concept is very promising in conducting large-scale testing for complex structural systems under strong earthquake excitation, in which many components may exhibit severe non-linear behavior. The current Internet is based on hierarchical network infrastructure and ubiquitous deployment of "middleboxes" can be seen on the Internet. So handy and robust data exchange in various network environments is still a challenging task for remote hybrid testing. This paper presents the development of a network communication platform, named NetSLab (Networked Structural Laboratories). The socket-based NetSLab is capable of transferring control and feedback data among remote structural testing laboratories or computers connected by Internet. To keep its simplicity for understanding, developing and maintenance, two new concepts, Dynamic Unified Data Packet (DUDP) and Generalized Data Communication Agency (GDCA), were introduced into NetSLab. A simple method was adopted in NetSLab to provide across firewall/proxy communication, which may greatly facilitate researchers to carry out remote hybrid testing in the current hierarchical network environments. Using NetSLab, a remote hybrid testing application has been developed and trial and actual testes were carried out at the Hunan University. Communication speed tests were performed over various network environments. The results showed that NetSLab was efficient and robust for data exchange in remote hybrid testing.

The network platform, NetSLab, was developed based on client/server concept along with a proposed data model and communication protocols. The platform is capable of transferring control and feedback data among remote structural testing laboratories or computers connected by Internet. Several concepts were introduced to realize the platform and to provide relatively easier and friendlier interface for applications and further development by users. Trial tests were successfully carried out at the Hunan University, China and the University of Southern California, USA. In the trial tests, models simulating bridge piers or piles were subjected to recorded earthquake ground motions controlled remotely over the Internet through the platform.

Abstract:In view of structural remote collaborative experiments,several representative research results were summarized by investigating the recent advances in this research field.The network structure,the data communication pattern and the testing activities in these researches were presented in detail.The similarities and differences in each experiment system were analyzed.The results show that as a new type of structural experiment system and method,the remote collaborative experiment has some good points,such as resources sharing,collaborative work,etc.This system has strong feasibility and validity;the system(NetSLab) that voluntarily developed in China is more advanced comparing with other similar systems.In the end,some proposals and ideas on remote collaborative pseudo-dynamic testing were put forward based on the level of the research and network situation in China.

Abstract:A networked structural laboratories system for evaluating the seismic performance of large-scale structure systems by seamlessly integrating geographically distributed experimental and computational substructures into a single test is described in this paper. It consists of an independent network based communication platform and various applications. The effectiveness of the proposed system is demonstrated by remote hybrid tests of a six-span bridge system at the Hunan University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Tsinghua University, China and the University of Southern California, USA. Successful application shows the system enables the shared use of testing resources by integrating single structural laboratories into a powerful and networked laboratory with advanced capability.

Abstract:A system for distance monitoring and a seismic experiment controlling was introduced.This system was used to develop the method of a remote pseudo-dynamic test.A network communication platform NetSLab was needed to realize the remote control of the pseudo-dynamic test.Authors used Visual Basic developing the standard open-end single layer structural remote pseudo-dynamic test platform.The pseudo-dynamic test was remotely executed using this program.The application of the program was verified well by test results.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to design and develop a Web based circuit virtual laboratory for undergraduate student courses, which can be treated as an accessorial tool for enhancing instruction. The study firstly reviews the general concept of virtual laboratory and some related works. Secondly, the design and development of the system framework of this circuit virtual laboratory is discussed. Finally, the paper introduces the evaluation from the tutors and students using the virtual laboratory. One of the major objectives of this project is the client adopted rich Internet applications (RIAs) to enhance the students' learning experience and provides significant impact on users' learning motivation. With the support of this system, the students' uninfluenced learning and experiment process can be carried out at any place of the world where Web access is available.

Abstract:With the rapid development of computer science, its education mode also changes a lot. Teaching and learning are not restricted by the physical distance with the help of the networking. Remote education becomes more popular because of its convenience and resource saving. Meanwhile, the network security is a hotspot in the world for the rapid and wide using of the network. In this paper, we share our experiences on a practice of information security theory curriculum based on the networking technology. We developed a remote education platform which has been used in our curriculum. The statistic results show that most students are quite satisfied with this remote education platform and show great learning effect on the information security theory curriculum.

Abstract:This paper presents the design and development of a networking laboratory that integrates physical networking equipment with the open source GNS3 network simulators for delivery of practical networking classes simultaneously to both on-campus and online students. This transformation work has resulted in significant increase in laboratory capacity, reducing repeating classes. The integrated platform offers students the real world experience of using real equipment, and the convenience of easy setup and reconfiguration by using simulators. A practical exercise in setting up an OSPF/BGP network is presented as an example to illustrate the experimental design before and after the integration of GNS3 simulators. In summary, we report our experiences with the integrated platform, from infrastructure, network design to experiment design; and the learning and teaching experiences of using GNS3 in classes.
