Abstract:A hierarchical NiO/NiMn-LDH nanosheet array on Ni foam was prepared via a facile two-step approach and exhibited a high specific capacitance (937 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1)) and good cycling stability (91% retention after 1000 cycles at 5 A g(-1)). The improved electro-chemical performance is benefited from the synergistic properties of hierarchical NiO/LDH nanosheet composites on a conductive substrate.

Abstract:Binary transition metal sulfides are considered to be a promising material for supercapacitors, possessing richer electrochemically active sites and superior electrochemical performance. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are often used as self-sacrificing templates in the preparation of metal sulfides. Usually, direct sulfidation of MOFs tends to cause collapse of the morphological structure and blockage of the ion transport channels, so that the morphology of the original MOF template can be well preserved by using pyrolysis followed by S2- ion exchange. In this paper, we first prepared NiCo-MOF-74 on nickel foam by an in situ transformation method from layered double hydroxides (LDHs) through a ligand exchange reaction. Then, CoNi2S4 was synthesized in two steps involving the pyrolysis of NiCo-MOF-74 and a subsequent S2- ion exchange reaction. Compared with direct sulfidation, this synthetic strategy can well maintain the rod-like morphology of MOF-74 arrays and prevent structural collapse. The surface of CoNi2S4 has a fine nanosheet structure, which exposes more active sites and shows a high specific capacitance of 7.50 F cm-2 at 2 mA cm-2 and an excellent Coulomb efficiency (96.32%). In addition, the hybrid supercapacitor assembled with activated carbon shows a high energy density of 0.64 mW h cm-2 at a power density of 1.64 mW cm-2 and a high capacitance retention of 88.39% after 5000 cycles. These results indicate that rod-shaped CoNi2S4 can be controllably prepared from MOF-74 involving an exchange reaction and has promising application in high-performance supercapacitors.

Abstract:Integrated hybrid nanoarrays with hierarchical porous structures have attracted much attention as energy materials for their excellent synergistic effects. Herein, we provide a facile strategy for integrating a NiCo2S4@Ni3S2 hybrid nanoneedle array on nickel foam derived from metal-organic framework (MOF) precursors and a Ni/Co-precursor by sulfurization. When directly used as the free-standing electrode for a supercapacitor, the NiCo2S4@Ni3S2 electrode exhibited a high specific capacitance of 1536.8 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1). Furthermore, the assembled NiCo2S4@Ni3S2//AC asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) exhibited a high energy density of 35.26 W h kg(-1) at a power density of 724.93 W kg(-1). The capacitance retention of NiCo2S4@Ni3S2 was up to 97.4% after 10000 cycles.

Abstract:Hollow double–shelled NiO nanospheres have been successfully prepared by the calcination of Ni–based MOF precursor at proper temperatures. The morphology and phase structure of NiO samples were characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD and FTIR. Electrochemical studies indicate that NiO nanospheres obtained under different conditions have distinct electrochemical performances. Hollow double–shelled NiO nanospheres calcined at 400 °C (N400) exhibit the best charge storage with a specific capacitance of 473 F g−1 at the current density of 0.5 A g−1 and with 94% capacitance retention even after 3000 cycling tests. For this merits, the N400//active carbon (AC) asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) was assembled to examine the practical application of the N400 sample, which presents high energy density of 21.4 Wh kg−1 at power density of 375.8 W kg−1. Particularly, the N400//AC ASC exhibits outstanding cycling stability, and its capacitance retention can still reach up to 92.3% after 3000 cycles. These results indicate that the N400 sample is a promising electroactive candidate for supercapacitors.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising electrode materials for supercapacitors (SCs), due to their diverse functionalities and high porosity. However, the applications of MOFs in practical SC devices are restricted by their intrinsic low conductivity and poor stability. Herein, a thin layer of conductive polyaniline (PANI) was decorated on Ni foam (NF) before the growth of Ni-MOF to tackle these issues. PANI not only improves the conductivity but also promotes the formation of Ni-MOF nanosheet arrays and ensures good mechanical adhesion. The as-prepared Ni-MOF/PANI/NF exhibits a high areal capacitance (3626.4 mF cm(-2) at 2 mA cm(-2)) and good rate capacity (71.3% at 50 mA cm(-2)). Moreover, an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) device using Ni-MOF/PANI/NF and activated carbon (AC) can deliver a maximum energy density of 45.6 W h kg(-1) (850.0 W kg(-1)) with excellent cycling stability (capacitance retention of 81.6% after 10000 cycles), outperforming most of the reported pristine MOF-based ASC devices.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as a new platform for the construction of various functional materials for energy related applications. Here, a facile MOF templating method is developed to fabricate a hierarchical nickel-cobalt sulfide nanosheet array on conductive Ni foam (Ni-Co-S/NF) as a binder-free electrode for supercapacitors. A uniform 2D Co-MOF nanowall array is first grown in situ on Ni foam in aqueous solution at room temperature, and then the Co-MOF nanowalls are converted into hierarchical Ni-Co-S nanoarchitectures via an etching and ion-exchange reaction with Ni(NO3)(2), and a subsequent solvothermal sulfurization. Taking advantage of the compositional and structural merits of the hierarchical Ni-Co-S nanosheet array and conductive Ni foam, such as fast electron transportation, short ion diffusion path, abundant active sites and rich redox reactions, the obtained Ni-Co-S/NF electrode exhibits excellent electrochemical capacitive performance (1406.9 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1), 53.9% retention at 10 A g(-1) and 88.6% retention over 1000 cycles), which is superior to control CoS/NF. An asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) assembled by using the as-fabricated Ni-Co-S/NF as the positive electrode and activated carbon (AC) as the negative electrode delivers a high energy density of 24.8 W h kg(-1) at a high power density of 849.5 W kg(-1). Even when the power density is as high as 8.5 kW kg(-1), the ASC still exhibits a high energy density of 12.5 W h kg(-1). This facile synthetic strategy can also be extended to fabricate other hierarchical integrated electrodes for high-efficiency electrochemical energy conversion and storage devices.

Abstract:Self-standing NiCO2S4 nanotube arrays have been in situ grown on Ni foam by the anion-exchange reaction and directly used as the electrode for supercapacitors. The NiCO2S4 nanotube in the arrays effectively reduces the inactive material and increases the electroactive surface area because of the ultrathin wall, which is quite competent to achieve high utilization efficiency at high electroactive materials mass loading. The NiCO2S4 nanotube arrays hybrid electrode exhibits an ultrahigh specific capacitance of 14.39 F cm(-2) at 5 mA cm(-2) with excellent rate performance (67.7% retention for current increases 30 times) and cycling stability (92% retention after 5000 cycles) at a high mass loading of 6 mg cm(-2). High areal capacitance (4.68 F cm(-2) at 10 mA cm(-2)), high energy density (31.5 Wh kg(-1) at 156.6 W kg(-1)) and high power density (2348.5 W kg(-1) at 16.6 Wh kg(-1)) can be achieved by assembling asymmetric supercapacitor with reduced graphene oxide at a total active material mass loading as high as 49.5 mg. This work demonstrates that NiCO2S4 nanotube arrays structure is a superior electroactive material for high-performance supercapacitors even at a mass loading of potential application-specific scale. Abstract:Abundant electroactive sites, good electrical conductivity and rich channels are essential for high-performance pseudocapacitive materials, but their realization at the same time is still a great challenge. In this study, we prepare a few atoms thick and mesoporous nickel-cobalt (Ni-Co) oxides nanosheets for supercapacitors. The Ni-Co oxides have been synthesized via combining hydrothermal method with subsequent annealing treatment, which is very robust for the Ni-Co oxides with tuneable compositions and structures. The ultrathin and mesoporous nanosheets give rise to ultrahigh atom ratio at surface for high electroactive sites and abundant channels. In addition, by controlling the Ni to Co ratio and further supported on Ni foam, the electrochemical activity can be further promoted. As a result, the Ni0.5Co0.5O shows much higher specific capacitance values of 761 and 1616 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1) for powder sample and its arrays on foam, which are both gradually increasing with repeated cycling. When used to assemble asymmetric supercapacitor, the two-electrode system shows a high energy density of 34.6 Wh kg(-1) at 750 W kg(-1), attractive power performance of 22.5 kW kg(-1) at 21.5 Wh kg(-1) with ultralong cycling stability (87% of capacitance retention after 10000 cycles). Abstract:The NiCo 2 O 4 nanosheets arrays with oxygen vacancies on Ni foam (NiCo 2 O 4 /NF) hybrid electrode is made utilizing high-pressure hydrothermal synthesis and subsequent heat treatment. Benefitting from the joint contribution of the greater specific surface area, sufficient oxygen vacancies, and unique nanosheet array structure, the NiCo 2 O 4 /NF electrode exhibits an enhanced electrochemical properties, such as a high specific capacitance of 1452.6 F/g at 1 A/g and prominent cycle stability with a capacitance retention of 98.67% after 4000 cycles. Moreover, the capacitance remains at 591 F/g at 50 A/g, demonstrating better rate capability. In addition, an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) was assembled based on NiCo 2 O 4 /NF//activated carbon (AC). Such an ASC delivers a high energy density of 47.95 Wh/kg at the power density of 750 W/kg and retains Wh/kg at W/kg. The ASC exhibits a preeminent cycling stability with a specific capacitance retention rate of 98.68% of initial capacitance after 25,000 cycles under 80 A/g.

Abstract:Hierarchical NiMoO4 architectures assembled from well-aligned uniform nanosheets or nanorods are successfully grown on various conductive substrates using a facile and effective general approach. Importantly, the nanostructures of NiMoO4 can be easily controlled to be nanosheets or nanorods by using different solvents. By virtue of their intriguing structure features, NiMoO4 nanosheets as integrated additive-free electrodes for supercapacitors manifest higher Faradaic capacitance than NiMoO4 nanorods. Moreover, an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) is constructed using the as-prepared NiMoO4 nanosheets as the positive electrode and activated carbon (AC) as the negative electrode. The optimized ASC with an extended operating voltage range of 0-1.7 V displays excellent electrochemical performance with a high energy density of 60.9 Wh kg(-1) at a power density of 850 W kg(-1) in addition to superior rate capability. Furthermore, the NiMoO4//AC ASC device exhibits remarkable cycling stability with 85.7% specific capacitance retention after 10 000 cycles. The results show that these NiMoO4-based nanostructures are promising for high-energy supercapacitors.

Abstract:In order to further overcome the shortage of electrodes with additive/binder and modulate the structure of NiCo2O4 for supercapacitors, ultrathin NiCo2O4 nanosheet arrays have been in situ grown on Ni foam by optimizing hydrothermal reactions based on crystal growth dynamics. The structure of ultrathin NiCo2O4 nanosheet arrays can expose more active sites, provide abundant diffusion channels and buffer the stress caused by phase transition during charge–discharge process of supercapacitors. The optimized hydrothermal reactions can provide more ordered crystal orientations by keeping nanosheets on Ni foam completely coming from in situ growth, which will decrease the inner resistance of ultrathin NiCo2O4 nanosheets and improve the efficiency and kinetics of electrons transfer. By the virtue of such remarkable features, the electrochemical results confirm the rationality of structural modulation and crystal orientations optimization with a drastically enhanced specific capacitance of 2017.8 F g−1, admirable rate performance of 93.2% and outstanding stability retention of 90.9% after cycling 5000 times. More impressively, the assembled flexible solid‐state asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) shows superior energy density, power density, and high stability. The modification strategy in this paper may throw light on the rational design of new generation advanced electrode materials for high‐performance flexible supercapacitors.

Abstract:High mass loading metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit great potentials as electrode materials in energy storage, benefiting from their massive exposed reactive sites. Keeping high mass loadings while maintaining ultra-fine morphology of MOFs is very technically demanding. Herein, high mass loading binder-free NiCo-MOFs with mixed organic linkers (1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate, BTC and p-benzenedicarboxylate, PTA) have been in-situ grown on Ni foam (NF) using Co(OH)2 as the template. The designed NiCo-(PTA)0.8(BTC)0.2 nanosheets achieved an areal capacitance of 5.84 F cm−2 (2.92 C cm−2) at a current density of 1 mA cm−2. The origin of the excellent electrochemical performances is carefully explained. The fabricated asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) using NiCo-(PTA)0.8(BTC)0.2 nanosheets and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) as the positive and negative electrodes presented an excellent specific capacitance of 113 F g−1 at 1 A g−1. Besides, an outstanding energy density of 40 Wh kg−1 was achieved at the power density of 800 W kg−1. The assembled ASC device can retain as high as 97.7% of the original capacitance after 10,000 cycles, manifesting an excellent cycle stability. This work may provide a strategy for the preparation of high mass loading dual metal MOFs electrodes with ultra-fine morphology for high-performance supercapacitors.

Abstract:In this work, hierarchical single-crystal NiCoO2 self-supported nanoflakes arrays grown on Ni foam were successfully prepared through a facile hydrothermal process. The nanoflakes can well contact with the substrate and support each other to form an open stable structure. This design of architectures can relieve volume expansion of metal oxides, promote the fast diffusion of electrolyte and increase electroactive sites. When applied in supercapacitors, the as-prepared NiCoO2 shows ultrahigh specific capacitance of 1448 and 962 F g(-1) at 3 and 20 A g(-1) for supercapacitors, respectively, indicating good rate capability. Moreover, NiCoO2 nanoflakes arrays exhibit excellent lithium storage capacity for lithium-ion batteries application. The charge specific capacity is high up to 1130 mAh g(-1). Abstract:Thanks to the rich porosity, high specific surface area and tunable components, MOFs-derived hydroxides have become outstanding electrode materials for supercapacitors. According to an ion etching/exchange reaction method, the self-sacrifice template of CoNi-MOF-74 micro-rods that anchored on Ni foam are controllably transformed into a series of composites of Co(OH)2/Ni(OH)2 with specific structure. They are nanoflakes-wrapped solid micro-rods (CoNi-2), nanoflakes self-assembled micro-rods (CoNi-6) and nanoflakes self-assembled micro-tubes (CoNi-12), respectively. Among them, the CoNi-2 demonstrates the largest BET surface area (208.8 m2/g) and the highest areal capacitance (16.3 F/cm2 at 2 mA/cm2), exhibiting the most promising electrochemical energy storage ability. A corresponding asymmetric supercapacitor (CoNi-2//AC) delivers high energy density of 0.5 mWh/cm2 at power density of 1.6 mW/cm2 and excellent cycling stability (86.6 % capacitance retention after 10 000 cycles at 50 mA/cm2). Moreover, an all-solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor successfully lighten a light-emitting diode (LED) for one minute, implying great potential for practical applications in energy storage.

Abstract:Well-aligned nickel oxide (NiO) nanosheets with the thickness of a few nanometers supported on a flexible substrate (Ni foam) have been fabricated by a hydrothermal approach together with a post-annealing treatment. The three-dimensional NiO nanosheets were further used as electrode materials to fabricate supercapacitors, with high specific capacitance of 943.5, 791.2, 613.5, 480, and 457.5 F g(-1) at current densities of 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 A g(-1), respectively. The NiO nanosheets combined well with the substrate. When the electrode material was bended, it can still retain 91.1% of the initial capacitance after 1,200 charging/discharging cycles. Compared with Co3O4 and NiO nanostructures, the specific capacitance of NiO nanosheets is much better. These characteristics suggest that NiO nanosheet electrodes are promising for energy storage application with high power demands.

Abstract:Designing nanostructure of electrode materials for boosting their electrochemical activity is a crucial issue to further development in the renewable energy industry. Here we have synthesized three NiCo2O4 crystals with different morphologies by simply adjusting hydrothermal reaction conditions. The NiCo2O4 nanoflake array grown on Ni foam is found to possess highly ordered structure with large specific surface area, providing vast reactive sites and facilitating the transfer of electrons and electrolyte ions. As a result, NiCo2O4 nanoflake array displays an improved specific capacitance of 854.7 F g−1 at 1 A g−1 and even kept it as high as 745.1 F g−1 at 10 A g−1. Furthermore, the final capacitance remains 82.9% after 10,000 charge-discharge process at 20 A g−1. An asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) composed of NiCo2O4 nanoflake array and active carbon enables maximum energy density of 25.7 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 765.5 W kg−1. In addition, this work will broaden our vision to improve the performance of electrodes for supercapacitor by ingeniously constructing their structure.

Hierarchical NiCo2O4@NiCo2O4 Core/shell Nanoflake Arrays As High-Performance Supercapacitor Materials.

Abstract:Hierarchical NiCo2O4@NiCo2O4 core/shell nanoflake arrays on nickel foam for high-performance supercapacitors are fabricated by a two-step solution-based method which involves in hydrothermal process and chemical bath deposition. Compared with the bare NiCo2O4 nanoflake arrays, the core/shell electrode displays better pseudocapacitive behaviors in 2 M KOH, which exhibits high areal specific capacitances of 1.55 F cm(-2) at 2 mA cm(-2) and 1.16 F cm(-2) at 40 mA cm(-2) before activation as well as excellent cycling stability. The specific capacitance can achieve a maximum of 2.20 F cm(-2) at a current density of 5 mA cm(-2), which can still retain 2.17 F cm(-2) (98.6% retention) after 4000 cycles. The enhanced pseudocapacitive performances are mainly attributed to its unique core/shell structure, which provides fast ion and electron transfer, a large number of active sites, and good strain accommodation.
Morphology control of nanoscale metal-organic frameworks for high-performance supercapacitors

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as a promising electrode materials have received increasing attention in supercapacitors. The construction of nanoscale MOF materials was considered as an effective strategy to enhance electrochemical performances. In this work, CuMOF crystal and NiMOF crystal are synthesized by selecting redox-active organic linker and metal centers. Then, an in situ solvothermal method is developed and applied successfully to prepare their nano materials, named as nano-CuMOF 1-10 and nano-NiMOF 1-10, under a facile and mild condition. In particular, it is found that various morphology and nano sizes for these nano-CuMOFs and nano-NiMOFs can be effectively controlled based on solvent effect and surfactant effect. All structures of as-synthesized nano materials are demonstrated by XRD and FT-IR results, which are consistent with the ones of their crystals. More importantly, electrochemical properties can be greatly enhanced from bulk crystals of CuMOF and NiMOF to nano-CuMOF and nanoNiMOF materials. Their nano materials exhibit excellent supercapacitor performance. Among of them, nano-NiMOF 3 as supercapacitor electrode shows the best specific capacitance of 1024.44 F g(-1) at a current densities of 1 A g(-1) and maintains very good cycling stability. Its capacitance retention of 49.07% can be observed after 5000 cycles at a current density of 5 A g(-1). In addition, a high-performance asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) was fabricated by using nano-NiMOF 3 and activated carbon as two electrodes. A specific capacitance of 38.65 F g(-1) was obtained at a current density of 0.5 A g(-1), and 109% capacity of the initial capacitance at 3 A g(-1) after 5000 cycles can be observed. Abstract:In this work, we demonstrate the large-scale preparation of Cu3Mo2O9 nanosheets on Ni foam with a non-surfactant hydrothermal method, followed by calcination. Subsequent performance tests uncovered that these Cu3Mo2O9 nanosheets on Ni foam exhibit an ultrahigh specific capacitance of 821 F g−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1 and had 88.3% capacitance retention after 1000 cycling tests at a current density of 5 A g−1. Such successful findings provided a simple and effective approach to Cu-Mo binary materials for supercapacitors.

Abstract:Developing hybrid metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with ordered structure is significant to obtain promising electrode materials for supercapacitors. Herein, the special electrodes of CuCo2O4/NiCo-MOF nanoflake vertical arrays are constructed on Ni foam by using the CuCo2O4 nanorods as a self-sacrifice template. Because of the multidirectional interconnected channels of spinel CuCo2O4, great electrochemical activity of NiCo-MOF, well-arranged morphology, and synergy effect at the interface, the resulting CuCo2O4/NiCo-MOF nanoflakes exhibit remarkable specific capacity (12.81 F/cm2 or 1423 F/g at 2 mA/cm2) and excellent rate performance (remaining 79.2% at 30 mA/cm2). The asymmetric supercapacitor assembled by CuCo2O4/NiCo-MOF and an activated carbon electrode shows excellent energy density of 0.48 mWh/cm2 at a power density of 1.50 mW/cm2. This work inspires insight into exploiting hybrid MOFs with highly aligned arrays for energy storage.
