Abstract:Ozone is a ubiquitous pollutant and manganese dioxide (MnO2) has been widely used for ozone decomposition. However, the effect of MnO2 structure on ozone decomposition has never been investigated. Three tunnel-structure polymorphs, i.e., alpha-, beta- and gamma-MnO2 were prepared and characterized by BET, TEM, XRD, H-2-TPR, O-2-TPD, NH3-TPD, TGA-MS and XPS. The activity of three MnO2 polymorphs for ozone decomposition followed the order of alpha->gamma->beta-MnO2. The alpha-MnO2 owned the largest specific surface area and lowest average oxidation state of Mn. Furthermore, the adsorbed oxygen species on the surface of alpha-MnO2 were more easily reduced. In-situ Raman spectroscopy results showed that peroxide species formed during ozone decomposition, and over alpha-MnO2 they were more easily decomposed by increasing reaction temperature. It was found that the catalytic activity of MnO2 strongly depended on the density of oxygen vacancies. Accordingly, the ozone decomposition mechanism based on the involvement and recycling of oxygen vacancy (V-O) is proposed. The decomposition of peroxide species is a rate-limiting step. Morphological impact of 1-dimensional → 3-dimensional manganese dioxides on ozone catalytic decomposition correlated with crystal facet and lattice oxygen mobility

Abstract:Ozone is a pollutant that has received widespread attention in recent years, and manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ) has been widely used for ozone catalytic decomposition. However, few studies have described the structural-activity correlation of different types morphological of MnO 2 . In this study, series of MnO 2 crystals (α-, β-, γ-, δ-, ε-and λ-MnO 2 ) were synthesized, and their catalytic activities on ozone decomposition (25 o C, dry air) were comparatively studied, which exhibited an order of ε-MnO 2 > α-MnO 2 > γ-MnO 2 > β-MnO 2 ≈ δ-MnO 2 > λ-MnO 2 . XRD and HRTEM confirmed their diversities on the exposed crystal planes. It was confirmed that ε-MnO 2 with (1 0 2) plane has the largest number of oxygen vacancies and the best oxygen mobility. These findings elucidate the favorable performance of ε-MnO 2 in the aforementioned tests. DFT calculations reveal the reaction mechanism, showed that ε-MnO 2 has the lowest energy barrier for the decisive speed step O 2 2- desorption (2.04 eV). This work illustrated the crucial role of the oxygen vacancies and the mobility of lattice oxygen, which sheds light on the strategies of rational design and control synthesis of effective catalysts for ozone elimination.

Abstract:Ozone is an ubiquitous air pollutant. To develop a new kind of catalyst besides the usually used MnO2 for ozone decomposition, the sub-micrometer spherical MnCO3 was prepared via a facile co-precipitation method without additive agents at room temperature and characterized by XRD, BET, SEM, TGA, XPS and H-2-TPR. As-prepared MnCO3 showed better catalytic activity for ozone decomposition than that of -MnO2, which is frequently studied in the literature. Amorphous MnOx was found on the MnCO3 surface, and it further formed when MnCO3 was exposed to the ozone flow. The MnOx layer is regarded as the active component in the catalytic ozone decomposition and crystalline MnCO3 serves as the support-stabilizing MnOx surface phase. Then MnCO3 powder was supported on non-woven fabrics through a simple and low-cost impregnation method. The MnCO3-based non-woven fabrics exhibited 100% ozone conversion over 8days at 25 degrees C with inlet ozone concentration 14 ppm and space velocity 42,000h(-1). This provides an alternative material for ozone-induced air cleaning.
Effect of MnO2 Morphology on Its Catalytic Performance in Lean Methane Combustion

Abstract:MnO2 with nanocubes and nanorods were synthesized by a hydrothermal process, and their structures and catalytic performances in methane combustion were investigated. The activity results show that methane conversion over nanocubic MnO2 is more than 90% at 350 degrees C, which is much higher than that of MnO2 nanorods. N-2 physisorption, XPS and H-2-TPR results demonstrate that the superior catalytic performance of nanocubic MnO2 is associated with its higher BET surface area, smaller crystalline size, more surface oxygen vacancies and better low-temperature reducibility. In situ DRFIFTS results demonstrate that the carboxylates species are the main intermediate species in methane oxidation.
Facile Synthesis Of Amorphous Mesoporous Manganese Oxides For Efficient Catalytic Decomposition Of Ozone

Abstract:Amorphous mesoporous manganese oxides (MnOx) with different microstructures were synthesized via a facile redox method between manganese acetate and potassium permanganate by modulating the addition sequence of the precursors and directly used for catalytic decomposition of ozone. The as-prepared catalysts were characterized by N-2 physisorption, SEM, TEM, XRD, Raman, H-2-TPR, O-2-TPD, TGA, and XPS. Amorphous mesoporous MnOx had more surface oxygen vacancies and larger specific surface area than calcined MnOx with high crystallinity and exhibited superior ozone decomposition activity at room temperature. Kinetic study and characterization results revealed that the lower oxidation state of Mn resulting from mixed Mn2+, Mn3+ and Mn4+ in amorphous mesoporous MnOx was more favorable for activating ozone towards high initial ozone conversion. Moreover, the catalytic stability of amorphous mesoporous MnOx strongly depended on the relative humidity, and the elevation of the oxidation state and the accumulation of surface adsorbed water molecules possibly led to the catalyst deactivation. These results may shed new light on the design of novel amorphous manganese-based catalysts for ozone decomposition.
α-MnO 2 catalysts with efficient ozone-catalyzed decomposition under high humidity conditions

Abstract:Ground-level ozone pollution poses significant risks to both ecosystems and human health, necessitating the implementation of effective control strategies. This investigtion concentrated on a monolithic ozone degradation catalyst composed of powdered α-MnO2 , throughly examining its catalytic performance, moisture resistance, and stability. The monolithic catalyst demonstrated optimal catalytic activity, achieving an ozone conversion rate of 99% following calcination at 400°C for a duration of three hours. Comprehensive characterization of the catalyst's properties at pH levels of 1, 4, and 7 revealed that residual acid ions negatively impacted catalytic activity. Notably, the catalyst at pH 7 exhibited more oxygen vacancies, which correlated with the reduction of sulfate ion residues and the increased availability of more active sites during the washing process. Under conditons of pH 7 and a space velocity of 900,000 h-1, the α-MnO2 catalyst achieved conversion rates of 100% and 95% for 18 ppm ozone within three hours under 90% relative humidity and dry conditions, respectively. Furthermore, the monolithic catalyst demonstrated remarkable moisture resistance, performing effectively in continuous alternating humidity cycle tests and maintaining high humidity. It sustained 90% ozone decomposition efficiency after three hours of testing in high humidity conditions. Additionally, the α-MnO2 monolithic catalyst showed excellent stability, with an ozone conversion rate exceeding 99% throughout a 50-hour testindg period. These results highlight the significant potential of the α-MnO2 monolithic catalyst for applications in ozone removal.

Abstract:Manganese oxide catalysts supported on activated carbon (AC, MnOx/AC) for ozone decomposition were prepared by in situ reduction of the permanganate. The morphology, oxidation state, and crystal phase of the supported manganese oxide were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, electron spin resonance, Raman spectroscopy, and temperature-programmed reduction. The supported MnOx layer was distributed on the surface of AC with a morphology that changed from a porous lichen-like structure to stacked nanospheres, and the thickness of the MnOx layer increased from 180 nm to 710 nm when the Mn loading was increased from 0.44% to 11%. The crystal phase changed from poorly crystalline β-MnOOH to δ-MnO2 with the oxidation state of Mn increasing from +2.9–+3.1 to +3.7–+3.8. The activity for the decomposition of low concentration ozone at room temperature was related to the morphology and loading of the supported MnOx. The 1.1%MnOx/AC showed the best performance, which was due to its porous lichen-like structure and relatively high Mn loading, while 11%MnOx/AC with the thickest MnOx layer had the lowest activity owning to its compact morphology.
Insights into the Reactive and Deactivation Mechanisms of Manganese Oxides for Ozone Elimination: The Roles of Surface Oxygen Species

Abstract:Manganese oxides with varied Mn valance states but identical morphologies were synthesized via a facile thermal treatment of γ-MnOOH. Also, their catalytic performance on ozone decomposition was investigated following the order of Mn3O4 < Mn2O3 < MnO2 < MnO2-H-200. In combination with X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), H2-temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), O2-temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization, it was deduced that the superior O3 decomposition capacity for MnO2-H-200 was strongly associated with abundant oxygen vacancies on its surface. Among Mn3O4, Mn2O3, and MnO2, the difference in O3 decomposition efficiency was dependent on the divergent nature of oxygen vacancy. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation revealed that Mn3O4 and MnO2 possessed lower formation energy of oxygen vacancy, while MnO2 had the minimum desorption energy of peroxide species (O2*). It was deduced that the promotion of the O3 decomposition capability was attributed to the easier O2* desorption. Insights into the deactivation mechanism for MnO2-H-200 further validated the assumptions. As the reaction proceeded, adsorbed oxygen species accumulated on the catalyst surface, and a portion of them were transformed to lattice oxygen. Effects of the Morphology of MnO 2 Nanostructures on the Catalytic Oxidation of Toluene

Abstract:Three MnO2 samples with flower (F-MnO2), rod (R-MnO2), and tube (T-MnO2) morphologies were constructed herein for catalytic toluene oxidation. T-MnO2 is superior to the other two in terms of catalytic performance and water resistance stability for toluene combustion. Overall structural and physicochemical properties characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, N2 adsorption–desorption, H2 temperature-programmed reduction, O2 temperature-programmed desorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and toluene temperature-programmed desorption verified that T-MnO2 exhibited larger specific surface area, stronger reducibility, and more plentiful surface oxygen species than F-MnO2 and R-MnO2, which could greatly enhance the activation and mobility of oxygen species. Notably, in situ diffuse-reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy was conducted to investigate the relationship between the activity and surface oxygen species on these catalysts. It was found that the surface lattice oxygen played an important role in the activation–oxidation process of toluene, and the difference in the surface oxygen species on the catalysts led to obvious activity changes due to their different morphologies.

Enhancing ozone catalytic decomposition through acid treatment of α-MnO2 for improved activity and humidity resistance

Abstract:Post-etching method using dilute acid solutions is an effective technology to modulate the surface compositions of metal-oxide catalysts. Here the α-MnO2 catalyst treated with 0.1 mol/L nitric acid exhibits higher ozone decomposition activity at high relative humidity than the counterpart treated with acetic acid. Besides the increases in surface area and lattice dislocation, the improved activity can be due to relatively higher Mn valence on the surface and newly-formed Brønsted acid sites adjacent to oxygen vacancies. The remnant nitro species deposited on the catalyst by nitric acid treatment is ideal hydrophobic groups at ambient conditions. The decomposition route is also proposed based on the DRIFTS and DFT calculations: ozone is facile to adsorb on the oxygen vacancy, and the protonic H of Brønsted acid sites bonds to the terminal oxygen of ozone to accelerate its cleavage to O2, reducing the reaction energy barrier of O2 desorption.
Engineering of Mn3O4@Ag Microsphere Assembled by Nanosheets for Superior O3 Decomposition

Abstract:Manganese oxides have wide application in ambient decomposition of ozone, and their activities are affected by many parameters. Morphology engineering and metal doping are one of the effective methods to enhance the catalytic activity for O3 decomposition. Herein, a topochemical transformation route to Mn3O4 nanosphere composed of 2D nanosheets is first provided using layered β-MnOOH as the precursor. Then nano silver particles are deposited over the Mn3O4 nanosheets via redox reaction without any extra reducing agent. In comparison with the Mn3O4 with a conventional octahedral morphology, the prepared Mn3O4 nanosphere (Mn3O4-NF) and its Ag-doped heritage, Mn3O4@Ag (Mn3O4@Ag-NF), both retain the morphology of β-MnOOH, display better reducibility and higher oxygen vacancies. The best catalytic performance for O3 decomposition is found over Mn3O4@Ag-NF, which exhibits ∼88.5% of removal efficiency within 24 h under a space velocity of 600 L g-1 h-1 and a relative humidity of 50% at room temperature. This work emphasizes the advantage of nanosheet morphology and metal doping in optimizing the catalytic activity for O3 elimination of manganese oxide.

In-Depth Understanding of the Morphology Effect of α-Fe2O3 on Catalytic Ethane Destruction

Abstract:Shape effects of nanocrystal catalysts in different reactions have attracted remarkable attention. In the present work, three types of α-Fe2O3 oxides with different micromorphologies were rationally synthesized via a facile solvothermal method and adopted in deep oxidation of ethane. The physicochemical properties of prepared materials were characterized by XRD, N2 sorption, FE-SEM, HR-TEM, FTIR, in situ DRIFTS, XPS, Mössbauer spectroscopy, in situ Raman, electron energy loss spectroscopy, and H2-TPR. Moreover, the formation energy of oxygen vacancy and surface electronic structure on various crystal faces of α-Fe2O3 were explored by DFT calculations. It is shown that nanosphere-like α-Fe2O3 exhibits much higher ethane destruction activity and reaction stability than nanocube-like α-Fe2O3 and nanorod-like α-Fe2O3 due to larger amounts of oxygen vacancies and lattice defects, which greatly enhance the concentration of reactive oxygen species, oxygen transfer speed, and material redox property. In addition to this, DFT results reveal that nanosphere-like α-Fe2O3 has the lowest formation energy of oxygen vacancy on the (110) facet ( Evo (110) = 1.97 eV) and the strongest adsorption energy for ethane (-0.26 eV) and O2 (-1.58 eV), which can accelerate the ethane oxidation process. This study has deepened the understanding of the face-dependent activities of α-Fe2O3 in alkane destruction.
Highly efficient removal of ozone by amorphous manganese oxides synthesized with a simple hydrothermal method

Abstract:Amorphous manganese oxides (MnOx) were synthesized by facile hydrothermal reactions between potassium permanganate and manganese acetate. Synthesis parameters, including hydrothermal time and temperature and molar ratio of precursors, significantly affected the ozone removal performance and structure property of MnOx. Amorphous MnOx-1.5, which was prepared at the Mn2+/Mn7+ molar ratio of 1.5 under hydrothermal conditions of 120°C and 2 hr, showed the highest ozone removal rate of 93% after 480 min at the room temperature, RH (relative humidity) = 80% and WHSV (weight hourly space velocity) = 600 L/(g·hr). The morphology, composition and structure of catalysts were investigated with X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Raman spectra, N2 physisorption, field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), H2 temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), O2 temperature-programmed desorption (O2-TPD) and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in situ DRIFTS). It was confirmed that high catalytic activity of amorphous MnOx for ozone removal was mainly ascribed to its abundant oxygen vacancies, high oxygen mobility and large specific surface area.
Ultra-Low-Temperature Ozone Abatement on Α-Mno2(001) Facets with Down-Shifted Lowest Unoccupied Orbitals

Abstract:Extraordinary catalytic performance at ultralow temperatures is energetically desirable for ozone converters equipped on commercial passenger aircrafts, but it remains a great challenge to achieve it. Here we synthesized sheet shaped alpha-MnO2 exposing a large percentage of reactive (001) facets, on which low-valence surface manganese ions and abundant surface oxygen vacancies act as catalytic sites. Compared with alpha-MnO2 rods, alpha-MnO2 sheets exhibited exceptional catalytic activity in ozone decomposition even at 55 degrees C due to the abundant catalytic sites. By using Mn L-3-edge absorption spectroscopy and the frontier orbital theory, we found that alpha-MnO2 sheets have down-shifted lowest unoccupied Mn 3d orbitals with respect to ss-MnO2, which enables electrons to transfer from peroxide intermediates to catalytic sites more easily, thus accelerating the reaction rate even at very low temperatures in the stratosphere.
Catalytic Decomposition of Residual Ozone over Cactus-like MnO2 Nanosphere: Synergistic Mechanism and SO2/H2O Interference

Abstract:Ground-level ozone is an irritant and is harmful to human respiratory and nervous systems. Thus, four manganese oxides with different crystals were hydrothermally synthesized to decompose residual ozone (deO3) in an ozone synergistic-oxidation system. Among them, a cactus-like MnO2-IV nanosphere exhibited the highest deO3 activity, with excellent tolerance to water vapor and SO2/H2O, which could maintain >88% deO3 efficiency in the high-humidity and sulfur-containing conditions. It benefits from the unique morphology, high specific surface area, superior redox properties, oxygen chemisorption capabilities, abundant surface-active hydroxyl species, and low valence Mn species. More importantly, the detailed interference mechanism of O2/O3/H2O/SO2 molecules on MnO2-IV was revealed utilizing in situ diffused reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. H2O generally caused recoverable deactivation, but that caused by SO2 was irreversible. The synergistic effect of SO2/H2O promoted the formation of an unstable sulfate species, thereby deepening the deactivation but inhibiting the irreversible poisoning. Finally, nine specific steps to decompose ozone via surface-active hydroxyl/intermediates were established.
Effect of the Morphology on Thermal Stability of the Ba-Ce-Mn-Al-O Oxides Synthesized in a Reverse Microemulsion

Abstract:Ba-Ce-Mn-Al-O (0.5/0.5/1/11, molar ratios) oxides nanorods and nanoparticles were synthesized in reverse microemulsions. The thermal stabilities and catalytic properties of CH4 Combustion over Ce-Ba-Mn-Al-O samples with different morphologies were investigated. The results showed that the particle morphology had a significant effect on the properties of the catalysts. The rodlike catalyst had higher thermal stability and catalytic activity for methane combustion than the spherical one. A geometric stacking model was proposed to explain the effect. Catalytic Decomposition of Residual Ozone over Cactus-like MnO 2 Nanosphere: Synergistic Mechanism and SO 2 /H 2 O Interference

Abstract:Ground-level ozone is an irritant and is harmful to human respiratory and nervous systems. Thus, four manganese oxides with different crystals were hydrothermally synthesized to decompose residual ozone (deO3) in an ozone synergistic–oxidation system. Among them, a cactus-like MnO2-IV nanosphere exhibited the highest deO3 activity, with excellent tolerance to water vapor and SO2/H2O, which could maintain >88% deO3 efficiency in the high-humidity and sulfur-containing conditions. It benefits from the unique morphology, high specific surface area, superior redox properties, oxygen chemisorption capabilities, abundant surface-active hydroxyl species, and low valence Mn species. More importantly, the detailed interference mechanism of O2/O3/H2O/SO2 molecules on MnO2-IV was revealed utilizing in situ diffused reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. H2O generally caused recoverable deactivation, but that caused by SO2 was irreversible. The synergistic effect of SO2/H2O promoted the formation of an unstable sulfate species, thereby deepening the deactivation but inhibiting the irreversible poisoning. Finally, nine specific steps to decompose ozone via surface-active hydroxyl/intermediates were established.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:A simple co-precipitation method was utilized to synthesize Cu/Mn catalysts with different physicochemical properties for high humidity ozone decomposition. The catalysts were then tested for activity and stability in decomposing ozone, and their physical and chemical properties were analyzed through various characterization techniques. Furthermore, the characterization after stability testing provided insights into the internal mechanism of the ozone reaction process. The Cu/Mn-NN catalyst demonstrated excellent ozone decomposition activity in the temperature of 25–100 °C, maintaining the conversion above 91% for continuous ozone decomposition for 12 h at room temperature, the relative humidity (RH) of 85%, and the weight space velocity of 300 L g−1 h−1. Characterization revealed that the Cu/Mn-NN catalyst, exhibited the larger specific surface area, better reducibility and oxygen storage capacity, richer surface functional groups and oxygen vacancies. Additionally, characterization after the stability test confirmed the accumulation of oxygen intermediate species on the catalyst surface. The findings also suggested that the catalytic environment created by nitrate precursors played a vital role in preventing catalyst particle aggregation, facilitating electron transfer within the catalyst, ensuring uninterrupted migration of lattice oxygen, and timely regeneration of oxygen vacancies.

Abstract:Various MnO2 structures have been extensively applied in catalysis. In this study, γ-MnO2, α-MnO2, and δ-MnO2 with corresponding rod, tube, and hierarchical architecture morphologies were prepared and applied for the catalytic oxidation of chlorobenzene (CB). The redox ability, H2O activation behavior, and acidity of MnO2 were analyzed using a range of techniques, including TPR, H2O-TPD, XPS, and pyridine-IR. The catalytic activities in CB oxidation were assessed; this revealed that γ-MnO2 exhibited the highest activity and best stability, owing to its enriched surface oxygen vacancies that functioned to activate O2 and H2O, and capture labile chlorine, which reacted with dissociated H2O to form HCl. All the MnO2 phases generated toxic polychlorinated by-products, including CHCl3, CCl4, C2HCl3, and C2Cl4, indicating the occurrence of electrophilic chlorination during CB oxidation. In particular, the dichlorobenzene detected in the effluents of α-MnO2 might generate unintended dioxins via a nucleophilic substitution reaction.
