Abstract:A compact unidirectional plasmonic coupler based on asymmetric cascaded nanoslits is proposed and theoretically analyzed. The incident photons illuminated on the structure are unidirectionally coupled into the metal-insulator-metal waveguide. The operation principle is clarified and a universal theoretical model based on coupled-mode equations is developed to facilitate structure design. Proof-of-principle demonstrations show that an ultrahigh extinction ratio ER = 43.8 dB at a specific wavelength and broadband of 160 nm covering a wide angular range from -20 degrees to 15 degrees with ER >= 10 dB are achieved.

Abstract:A unidirectional beam-scanning antenna is proposed. The antenna is constructed by placing a series of circular radiating elements on a 2-mm dielectric slab backed by a corrugated metal-insulator-metal (CMIM) ground. The CMIM structure is introduced not only as a ground but also as a waveguide for spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs). The beam-scanning function is realized through the phase difference of SSPPs fed to the radiating elements. In addition, the CMIM ground reflects downward radiation waves onto upward space, leading to a unidirectional pattern and enhanced radiation gain. Both the numerical simulation and experiment results demonstrate the good performance of the proposed antenna. They validate that the antenna achieves unidirectional radiation and scanning angle of 57° when the frequency varies from 6.2 to 9 GHz with the frequency sensitivity of 20.4°/GHz. The realized gains are higher than 8.11 dBi over the entire band. Compared with the published works, this paper provides a novel feed technology, a simpler structure, and higher frequency sensitivity. The high-frequency sensitivity is beneficial to reduce the bandwidth burden of the entire system. The antenna has potential applications in satellite communication.

Abstract:Metasurface antennas (MAs) have been proposed as innovative alternatives to conventional bulky configurations for satellite applications because of their low profile, low cost, and high gain. The general method of surface impedance modulation for designing MAs is complicated, and achieving broad operation bandwidth remains a challenge because of its high dispersion response. We propose a novel and easy technique to control cylindrical surface waves radiated by a phase-tuning metasurface. Simultaneously, this technique exhibits a considerably wide working bandwidth. A detailed analysis of the radiation mechanism is discussed. A left-hand circularly polarized (LHCP) antenna and a right-hand circularly polarized (RHCP) antenna that are based on the phase-tuning metasurface are simulated and measured. The measured fractional 3-dB gain bandwidth and gain are higher than 17% and 15.57 dBi, respectively, which are consistent with the simulated results. Moreover, 30% 3-dB axial ratio is achieved for the LHCP and RHCP antennas. To the best knowledge of the authors, it is for the first time to realize a circularly polarized broadband MA by using the phase-tuning mechanism. The approach can be regarded as a new starting point for antenna design, thereby paving the way for the development of broadband and low-profile antennas for future satellite communication.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a novel ultrabroad-band and wide-angle unidirectional coupling scheme by combining the coupling effect of single nanoslit and chirped grating effect. The operation principle is numerically and experimentally clarified through analysis and compare. Numerical analysis shows that the fabricated chirped-nanoslits grating could unidirectionally couple surface plasmon polaritons from free-space light over an ultrabroad-band (1.3 mu m) and wide-angle (30 degrees) ranges. Excellent unidirectional coupling performance with extinction ratio ER > 10 dB (a peak value ER = 22 dB) over an ultrabroad operating bandwidth of 300 nm and wide angular range of 26 degrees is experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract:A new scheme for unidirectional coupling of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) from freely propagating light into a metal-insulator-metal waveguide is proposed, which is composed of an asymmetric double-slit of different widths sandwiched by symmetric grooves. A theoretical model based on coupled-mode equations is developed to facilitate structure design and elucidate the underlying physical mechanism. With the model, the asymmetric double-slit with different widths is designed for unidirectional launching of SPPs with an ultrahigh extinction ratio of 44.8 dB at the wavelength 800 nm. A method of stepwise design is proposed for simplicity of design and convenience of analysis. Proof-of-principle demonstrations show that an ultrahigh extinction ratio of 37.1 dB and significant field enhancement for the proposed whole structure are obtained. In addition, an ultracompact plasmonic dichroic splitter based on the asymmetric double-slit with high extinction ratios of 24.2 and 21.8 dB at splitting wavelengths of 800 and 900 nm is achieved, and the lateral dimension of the plasmonic dichroic splitter is only 760 nm.

Abstract:A unidirectional plasmonic coupler with ultra-broadband and wide-angle coupling efficiency is proposed and demonstrated. Employing the plasmonic critical angle (PCA) phenomenon in conjunction with the effect of subwavelength metallic gratings, a wide incident angular full-width-half-maximum (AFWHM >28°) coupling efficiency larger than 50% and extinction ratio better than 15 dB over an ultrabroad wavelength range 725-985 nm (bandwidth >260 nm) are achieved. The operation principle and performance of the structure are clarified and theoretically illustrated.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a mechanism of broad-angle and efficient unidirectional excitations of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). By combining the plasmonic critical angle phenomenon and grating effects, unidirectional excitation of SPPs with broad incident angular width up to 25 degrees and high extinction ratio better than 10 dB was experimentally demonstrated. A peak extinction ratio of 17 dB was achieved. The proposed structure was also numerically simulated showing good agreement with experimental measurement. Abstract:Asymmetric directional coupling between a hybrid plasmonic waveguide with subwavelength field confinement and a conventional dielectric waveguide is investigated. The proposed hybrid coupler features short coupling length, high coupling efficiency, high extinction ratio, and low insertion loss; it can also be integrated into a silicon-based platform. This coupler can be potentially adopted for signal routing between plasmonic waveguides and dielectric waveguides in photonic integrated circuits. Furthermore, it can be exploited to efficiently excite hybrid plasmonic modes with conventional dielectric modes.

Abstract:A new coupling scheme for unidirectional coupling of surface plasmons from free-space light over a broad-angle range is proposed and theoretically investigated. Firstly, the property of strong asymmetric excitation is found in the single wide defect, especially the single dielectric ridge, which is due to the excitation of asymmetric mode in the wide defect under oblique incidence. Then we show that the strong asymmetric excitation by single ridge still exists in the periodic dielectric ridge grating. By cascading the asymmetric mode excitation peak and the grating resonance angle peak, the angular-full-width-half-maximum (AFWHM) is broadened to 39 degrees. Finally, the AFWHM is further broadened to 52 degrees. by utilizing the chirped ridge grating and a remarkable property of wide flat-top angular response is achieved.

Abstract:A cascaded-grating coupling scheme for unidirectionally coupling and launching surface plasmons from free-space light with ultra-broadband and wide-angle efficiency is proposed and theoretically investigated, and the potential applications in sensing are discussed. The cascaded sub-gratings of different periods couple the incident light over a relatively wide wavelength and angular range into surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). After traveling a short distance, the SPPs interact with the sensed medium, and then are coupled back into freely propagating light through the nanoslit in the metal film. By observing the changes of SPP-mediated light coupled out through the slit, broadband sensing is achieved. A quantitative theoretical model is developed for performance prediction and validated with aperiodic Fourier modal method. Proof-of-principle demonstrations show that the spectral full-width-half-maximum reaches 400 nm and meanwhile the angular width is up to 25 degrees, both of which are almost four times compared to the reference single-periodic gratings. A wavelength sensitivity as high as 852 nm RIU-1 (RIU, refractive index units) and a relative intensity change up to similar to 5 x 10(4)% RIU-1 are obtained.

Abstract:To integrate antennas into the curved surface of a mounted platform, a broadband flexible antenna array has been investigated in this letter, which maintains ultra-wideband lower scattering as well. The proposed array features a unique structure, combining two mirror-symmetrical types of metasurface-inspired antenna elements to create a 2 x 2 crossover array. This antenna array effectively reduces radar cross section (RCS) in the ultra-wideband without the need for additional components. Measured results indicate the proposed antenna array achieves a relative operating bandwidth exceeding 84% in both planar and deformed states and with peak gain over 13.3 dBi at 7 GHz. In comparison to a flexible equivalent metallic plane, the proposed antenna array demonstrates a relative 6 dB RCS reduction bandwidth exceeding 100.7% in planar state and over 75% in various deformed states.

Abstract:Surface plasmon polariton (SPP) coupling is a basic subject for plasmonic study and applications. Optical nanoantennas enable downscaling of the SPP coupling to subwavelength scales. In this study, asymmetric optical slot nanoantenna pairs composed of two optical slot nanoantennas with different lengths are proposed for SPP directional coupling. Broadband unidirectional launching of SPPs is achieved, and the extinction ratio obtained experimentally reaches up to 44. The bandwidth is larger than 157 nm. Furthermore, SPP direction-selective radiation is demonstrated using the asymmetric optical slot nanoantenna pairs. A novel plasmonic display device showing the propagation direction of SPPs is achieved by employing asymmetric optical slot nanoantenna pairs without any electric device. Asymmetric optical slot nanoantenna pairs have large potential in the directional control of SPP launching and radiation and can be very useful in compact optical circuits and other photonic integrations.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel wideband antenna with a simple structure and low profile based on spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs) is proposed. The structure consists of periodically modulated corrugated metal strips as transmission lines, a CPW feed, and a ground metal plate as an antenna reflector. The SSPP transmission line is used to convert quasi-TEM to SSPP mode and achieve optimal impedance matching. The prototype of the end-fire antenna has been designed and fabricated. The simulation results show that this antenna can achieve a gain of 10.19 dB, a bandwidth of 146%, and an efficiency of 90% in a wide operating band from 7 to 45 GHz. The proposed design illustrates great potential that includes high efficiency, good directivity, high gain, wide bandwidth, and easy manufacturing.

Abstract:An efficient and unidirectional optical coupling scheme for metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) waveguides with wide-angle and ultra-broadband efficiency is proposed and demonstrated. Based on joint effects of the plasmonic critical angle phenomenon (PCA), the zero-order grating resonance, and the first-order Fabry–Perot (FP) resonance of the MDM waveguide, the illuminated light could be efficiently coupled into MDM plasmonic waveguide with angular-full-width-half-maximum (AFWHM) widen to 50° over a broad wavelength range 750–1000nm. The operation principle and performance of the structure are clarified and theoretically illustrated.

Abstract:The application of the subwavelength planar structure to control the propagation direction of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) has attracted many interests in recent years. However, the traditional unidirectional transmission devices of SPPs are limited by the low extinction ratio, narrow working band and the incapability of controlling the transmission directions. In this study, a novel SPPs unidirectional transmission device based on metallic aperture arrays of the right triangle (RT) is proposed and demonstrated by numerical simulations (finite-difference time-domain method). The maximum extinction ratio of the unidirectional transmission device can reach upto 33 dB under the irradiation of linearly polarized light, and the device possesses a wide operating band (similar to 300 nm) while the extinction ratio is greater than 10 dB. Moreover, the transmission direction of SPPs can be flexibly controlled by tuning the polarization of the incident beam. This broadband, polarization-mediated and high extinction ratio unidirectional transmission device shows great potential in the compact plasmonic devices.

Abstract:Ultra-broadband, efficient and unidirectional surface plasmon polariton (SPP) launching is of great concern in plasmonic devices and circuits. To address this challenge, a novel method adopting deep-subwavelength slits of subwavelength period (λSPP/4 ~ λSPP/3) in a thick metal film and under backside illumination is proposed. A new band pattern featuring broadband and wide angular characteristics, which is due to the coupling of the zeroth-order SPP resonance at the superstrate–metal interface and the first-order SPP resonance at the metal–substrate interface, is observed for the first time in the dispersion diagram. Unidirectional SPP launching efficiency of ~50%, ultra-broad bandwidth of up to 780 nm, covering the entire optical fiber communication bands and relatively wide angular range of 7° are achieved. This remarkable efficient, ultra-broadband and wide angular performance is demonstrated by carefully designed experiments in the near infrared regime, showing good agreement with numerical results.
