Abstract:Via a sample of 338 employees from 86 teams in 13 companies from China, we examined over two points of time (two months apart) how proactivity (at the individual and team level) influences individual creativity and team innovation. Guided by a knowledge-based view of the firm with an emphasis on knowledge sharing and learning as the overarching theoretical framework, we hypothesized that proactivity contributes to team innovation in ways that cross the individual and team levels of analysis with team transactive memory system (TMS) as a key mediating mechanism. Additionally, we hypothesized that the tendency for average knowledge sharing behavior of team members to generally strengthen TMS is stronger when members perceive their supervisors as providing support in ways that do not favor some members over others (i.e., when there is little if any perceived supervisory support differentiation). All but one of our hypotheses was supported. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
