Abstract:Non-R&D-based innovations as effective ways to promote firms' growth and performance have gradually been recognized in recent years. However, the reason why those innovations generate benefits is still underexplored and mixed, particularly for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the context of emerging economies like China. Using quantitative data from 506 SMEs in China, we analyze five kinds of non-R&D-based innovative activities and explore how those non-R&D-based innovations contribute to SMEs' performance from dynamic capabilities view. Our results provide evident support that SMEs' dynamic capabilities mediate the relationships between three kinds of non-R&D-based innovations, namely product and service customization, marketing innovation and organizational innovation, and business performance. We contribute to enriching dynamic capabilities research in non-R&D-based innovation context, on one hand, which is relatively neglected in previous research. On the other hand, we call for more attention on non-R&D-based innovative activities, which could complement the picture of innovation processes in SMEs in emerging economies.

Abstract:To what extent can non-R&D-based innovation contribute to innovation performance in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)? To answer this question, this study investigates the moderating role of absorptive capacity in the relationships between three non-R&D-based innovation activities and firms' innovation performance, namely technology adoption,' imitation and minor modification,' and innovative marketing.' Using data on 329 Chinese manufacturing SMEs, we find that the absorptive capacity of SMEs positively moderates the relationship between innovative marketing and innovation performance. However, the absorptive capacity of SMEs negatively moderates the relationship between imitation and minor modification and their innovation performance. These findings contribute to understanding the effects of non-R&D-based innovation activities, and the role of SMEs' absorptive capacity in a non-R&D context.

Abstract:For a long time, R&D had been largely equated with technological innovation by both academia and enterprises, sometimes even been regarded as the only effective way of innovation. However, ample empirical studies in recent years showed that, some of the innovative firms, especially small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), often use many other innovative methods to win the competitive advantages. EU's surveys in recent years even indicated that over half of European innovative firms did not perform formal R&D. Based on a survey of 398 Chinese SMEs in 2012, this paper tried to develop a preliminary theoretical framework for SMEs' non-R&D-based innovation practice in the Chinese context, as well as main patterns of SMEs' non-R&D innovation, such as technology adoption, imitation, marketing innovation and etc. Through our empirical study, we find that non-R&D innovation activities have significant positive impacts on SMEs' innovation performance. Meantime, good absorptive capacity also helps to improve innovation performance of SMEs. Firms with better absorptive capacity would have better innovation performance when doing marketing innovation. However, firms may act worse with better absorptive capacity when doing technological non-R&D innovation.

Abstract:In some enterprises, the main problem that hinders the leverage of innovation capability is lacking the absorptive capability, which is usually caused by the high turnover rate of R&D talent. The root cause is the variance in strategic direction, which actually has negative effects on technological innovation. However, the research of enterprises' innovation capability leverage is still in the exploration. Concerning the problems in enterprises, based on the previous study at home and abroad, this paper focuses on how to leverage innovation capability through strategy. From the previous studies and two explorative case studies, a problem-oriented model is established, which focuses on how to leverage innovation capability through strategy. The hypotheses are proposed and tested by data from 420 small and medium sized enterprises that respond to our questionnaire. At last, some suggestions about how to leverage enterprises' innovation capability are proposed.

Abstract:Micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) are of great importance to national economies. However, due to their small size, the growth of MSMEs is vulnerable. Generally, MSMEs lack the capability to innovate on their own, and most MSMEs cannot grow into large and competitive firms. In this paper, we argue that intermediary organizations can integrate innovation resources for MSMEs and enhance the innovation capabilities of MSMEs. Through a case study of an intermediary organization in China, this paper confirms that intermediary organizations can expand the innovation resources available for MSMEs, help MSMEs scan and identify useful innovation resources, and provide expertise to MSMEs in utilizing innovation resources. While traditional resource-based theories maintain that a firm's internal heterogeneous resources can generate competitive advantages, this paper proposes that specialized intermediary organizations can also play the role of resource integrators for small firms and help small firms acquire and utilize external strategic resources. This research also provides insights to the literature about the growth of local firms in emerging economies. Although technological innovation projects require significant R&D investments and are difficult for local MSMEs to handle, this paper suggests that intermediary organizations can help MSMEs initiate innovation projects by expanding the resources available to MSMEs and by assisting them in maximizing the use of the resources at a reasonable cost. Finally, this paper provides some policy implications for firms and policy-makers in emerging economies.

Abstract:Purpose Growing attention has been paid to bricolage as a strategic means to overcome resource constraints in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). In the industrial market, a bricolage strategy and ambidextrous action may help firms to remain competitive by responding quickly to the business-to-business marketing. Despite its paramount importance, questions as to how bricolage is strengthened and how bricolage improves innovation ambidexterity have remained unanswered. This study aims to develop an integrated model for the relationships among environmental turbulence, learning orientation, ambidexterity and performance, with a particular focus on the mediation of bricolage. Design/methodology/approach Building on the literature review regarding the key constructs, hypotheses were developed. Data were collected using questionnaires from 229 SMEs in South Korea. To test hypothesis, structural equation modeling and Monte Carlo method for assessing mediation were performed. Findings Results reveal that environmental turbulence and learning orientation are positively associated with bricolage, which sequentially affects ambidextrous action as a driver of performance. The findings also indicate that bricolage significantly mediates the relationship between its antecedents and ambidexterity. Originality/value This research contributes to advancing our understanding of the role of a bricolage strategy for innovation ambidexterity and performance in SMEs. This study is the first to examine the mediation of bricolage between environmental factors and ambidexterity for improved performance.

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) play a critical role in the transition of a developing country. It is essential for SME to leverage innovative capability in long-term growth and survival, and the role of the firm’s entrepreneurs play the key role for leveraging innovative capability. Yet at present little is known about the relationship between the managerial capabilities of entrepreneurs and the innovative capability of the firm. This paper contributes to the understanding of the innovative capability leveraging of an organization by developing theory about the interplay between managerial capabilities of the entrepreneur and the firm’s TIM capability.

Abstract:Entrepreneurs as the most important drivers, determine the whole enterprise's innovation capabilities in Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). Existing literatures concerned the relationship between innovation capabilities and entrepreneurs, consistently emphasize the important role of entrepreneurs; yet they do not clarify the question of "how"-how entrepreneurs leverage the innovation capabilities. However, the answer of "how" has more practical significance than just expounding the important role of entrepreneurs in enhancing innovation capabilities.In this article, two paths by which entrepreneurs leverage innovation capabilities are explored. One is direct; referring that entrepreneur should strengthen himself. The other is a relatively indirect one, nurturing employees to leverage the whole enterprise's innovation capabilities. A case study of the innovation capability development at UPG, a small financial service company in Zhejiang Province, found the mechanism how entrepreneurs leverage innovation capabilities.

Abstract:While most studies have viewed strategic flexibility as a capability to cope with the environmental turbulence and promote the product innovation, few of them investigate the mediating mechanism in the relationship between the strategic flexibility and product innovation. According to the resource-based view, we regard the bricolage as a concrete activity of recombining the different resources in the product development process and explore the underlying mechanism. Our results reveal that strategic flexibility has a positive and significant effect on bricolage. The effect of strategic flexibility on product innovation is partially mediated by bricolage. Furthermore, environmental turbulence moderates the relationship between strategic flexibility and bricolage positively. We contribute to the strategic flexibility research by exploring the effect of strategic flexibility on the bricolage and product innovation form a mediating perspective and offering a more nuanced and in-depth understanding of the impact of strategic flexibility. This research also provides new evidence on the effect of strategic flexibility on product innovation in transition economies such as China, where strategic flexibility is essential for firms to adapt to an uncertain environment.

Abstract:Abstract The entrepreneurial bricolage theory has been connected to a wide range of organizational phenomena, including innovation, firm performance, social entrepreneurship, and opportunity identification. Regrettably, research in this domain is yet to significantly heighten understanding of its connection to competitive advantage, which has been touted as the ultimate goal of any strategic business. This study reverses this trend by looking at the impact of entrepreneurial bricolage on competitive advantage as well as the mediating effect of resource orchestration capability in the relationship. Based on survey data administered to 413 small business enterprises (SBEs), structural equation modeling was used to analyze the results. Results show that entrepreneurial bricolage was significantly related to competitive advantage. Resource orchestration capability partially mediated the relationship between entrepreneurial bricolage and competitive advantage. A novel finding of this study documents resource orchestration capability and entrepreneurial bricolage as antecedents of competitive advantage, which has been missing in prior literature. The study concludes with theoretical and managerial implications and also proffers future research direction.

Abstract:Intermediaries are frequently used as external institutions to bridge knowledge gaps and enlarge innovation search. Although there is a consensus that ties with intermediaries have a significantly positive impact on firms’ innovation performance since external knowledge sources are important to firms’ innovative activities, far less is known about how these intermediaries become effective drivers of corporate innovation. From the capacity-based view, this study proposes that intermediaries facilitate the development of dynamic capability which further causes remarkable innovation. A firm's dynamic capability acts as a mediator in the relationship between intermediaries and innovation performance. It is also observed that organizational structure formalization and strategic conformity negatively moderate the mediation effect. This proposed theoretical framework is proven by empirical results from a moderated mediation analysis using a sample of Chinese manufacturing firms.
Inventor Knowledge Network Structural Holes and Ambidexterity Innovation in High-tech SMEs

Abstract:Ambidexterity is important for firms to keep advantage and remain successful. Based on a framework of ability-motivation-performance, this study aims to investigate the effect of inventor knowledge network structural holes on ambidexterity innovation in high-tech SMEs and considers the contingency of government subsidies and intellectual property protection. We suggest that inventors’ knowledge network structural holes are an important yet understudied ability factor to balance the trade-off between exploration and exploitation and this relationship is influenced by the institutional environment (government subsidies and intellectual property protection). We further argue that ambidexterity innovation has a positive impact on high-tech SMEs’ performance. Based on a longitudinal data set of 8,928 inventors in firms listed in the High-Tech Innovation Board supports our arguments, we find an inverted U-shaped relationship between knowledge network structural holes and ambidexterity innovation. Meanwhile, government subsidies flatten the inverted U-shaped relationship while intellectual property protection steepens the curvilinear relationship. In addition, inventors' ambidexterity innovation is beneficial to firm performance. Theoretical contributions, practical implications, limitations, and future research avenues are discussed.

Abstract:A field study of 29 resource-constrained firms that varied dramatically in their responses to similar objective environments is used to examine the process by which entrepreneurs in resource-poor environments were able to render unique services by recombining elements at hand for new purposes that challenged institutional definitions and limits. We found that Lévi-Strauss's concept of bricolage—making do with what is at hand—explained many of the behaviors we observed in small firms that were able to create something from nothing by exploiting physical, social, or institutional inputs that other firms rejected or ignored. We demonstrate the socially constructed nature of resource environments and the role of bricolage in this construction. Using our field data and the existing literature on bricolage, we advance a formal definition of entrepreneurial bricolage and induce the beginnings of a process model of bricolage and firm growth. Central to our contribution is the notion that companies engaging in bricolage refuse to enact the limitations imposed by dominant definitions of resource environments, suggesting that, for understanding entrepreneurial behavior, a constructivist approach to resource environments is more fruitful than objectivist views.

Abstract:Newly established enterprises in China face significant challenges and opportunities, with persistently high mortality rates. Navigating market challenges and establishing sustainable competitive advantages are pressing issues for contemporary businesses. This study delves into the bridging role of business model innovation between entrepreneurial bricolage and entrepreneurial performance, with market orientation influencing the relationship boundaries. We examined 288 Chinese small and medium-sized enterprises, investigating the relationships among entrepreneurial bricolage, business model innovation, market orientation, and entrepreneurial performance. Empirical results indicate: (1) Entrepreneurial bricolage positively influences business model innovation, and business model innovation positively impacts entrepreneurial performance. (2) Business model innovation plays a fully mediating positive role between entrepreneurial bricolage and entrepreneurial performance. (3) Market orientation positively moderates the impact of entrepreneurial bricolage on business model innovation and entrepreneurial performance, and it also positively moderates the impact of business model innovation on entrepreneurial performance. (4) Market orientation positively moderates the impact of entrepreneurial bricolage, mediated by business model innovation, on entrepreneurial performance. The study results contribute to a more effective understanding of the mechanisms through which entrepreneurial bricolage and business model innovation influence entrepreneurial performance, as well as how market orientation moderates their relationships and how enterprises sustain competitive advantages.
High Performance Work Systems and Organizational Innovative Capabilities in the PRC: the Mediating Role of Intellectual Capital

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to develop a systematic understanding of the mechanisms by which high performance work systems (HPWS) facilitate organizational innovative capabilities. Using knowledge based view of the firm, we introduce the important role of intellectual capital in examining that issue. Drawing on empirical analysis conducted at 164 Chinese firms, the results confirm that HPWS influence organizational innovative capability through different dimensions of intellectual capital (human, organizational and relational capital). We find that organizational capital and relational capital mediates the relationship between HPWS and innovative capabilities. Contrary to the hypothesis, human capital doesn't play a mediating role in that relationship. Our findings support, as well as extend the strategic human resource management (SHRM) literature and resource based view (RBV) of the firm as whether, why and how HPWS can develop a competitive advantage based on innovation.

Abstract:Innovation is widely recognized as a major source of modern productivity growth. Indeed, it is seen as constituting a central process of economic advancement in industrialized countries. Despite this, a considerable gap still exists in knowledge and technological capability between industrialized countries and the more dynamic developing countries such as China. Abstract:Innovation has emerged as a crucial factor in the sustenance and growth of enterprises. Nonetheless, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) confront numerous challenges in their pursuit of innovation, owing to constraints in capital, expertise, and knowledge resources. Drawing on the resource-based theory and the input-process-output (IPO) model, this study devises a mechanism model to assess the impact of knowledge heterogeneity and innovation performance on small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises in Guizhou Province, China. The objective is to offer recommendations for the advancement and innovation of enterprises with relative knowledge resource deficiencies. A total of 324 valid questionnaires were gathered, and the acquired data were analyzed employing SPSS 23.0 and Amos 26.0. The findings reveal that knowledge heterogeneity exerts a significantly positive influence on innovation performance. Task conflict and relationship conflict serve as partial mediators in the effects of knowledge heterogeneity on innovation performance. By capitalizing on the heterogeneity of internal and external knowledge, enterprises can effectively enhance their innovation outcomes. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that knowledge sharing possesses a moderating effect on the impact of knowledge heterogeneity on task conflict, relationship conflict, and innovation performance. In a conducive sharing environment, the ultimate effect of knowledge heterogeneity on innovation is subject to alteration.
