Abstract:How and when do leader prototypical implicit followership theories (IFTs) facilitate follower organizational citizenship behaviour (OCB)? In line with behavioural confirmation theory, we propose that leaders who have a higher level of prototypical IFTs provide their followers with more support, which subsequently facilitates follower OCB. Furthermore, we argue that leader prototypical IFTs shape both leader support and subsequent follower OCB not only independently but also in conjunction with follower prototypical IFTs. We collected survey data from 137 leader - follower dyads in China. Our preliminary results showed that the prototypical IFTs of leaders were positively related to leader support, which in turn was positively related to follower OCB; however, the sole predictive effect of leader prototypical IFTs became nonsignificant when leader-follower congruence in prototypical IFTs was included as a predictor. The results, which were obtained using polynomial regression and response surface analysis, showed that when leaders and followers held congruent prototypical IFTs, a high level of prototypical IFTs was related to higher levels of both leader support and follower OCB. Therefore, leaders' IFTs, followers' IFTs, and the congruence between these factors should all be taken into account in attempts to facilitate follower OCB.

Abstract:Abstract Leaders’ implicit followership theory describes leaders’ personal assumptions about the traits and behaviors that characterize followers. Unlike traditional organizational behavior research, studies on leaders’ implicit followership theory can deepen our understandings of ‘how leaders and followers perceive, decide and take action’ from follower-centric perspective. Adopting 267 follower–leader dyads from 16 Chinese enterprises as our final sample, we found that: (1) positive leaders’ implicit followership theory had significant positive effect on followers’ creativity; (2) followers’ leader–member exchange with leader, intrinsic motivation and creative self-efficacy mediated the positive relationship between positive leaders’ implicit followership theory and followers’ creativity; (3) no significance difference was found between the mediating effects of leader–member exchange, intrinsic motivation and creative self-efficacy. The current study not only extended the application of social cognitive theory in leadership research, but also made contributions to the enrichment of social exchange theory and componential theory of creativity.

Abstract:We explored the relationship between positive leaders' implicit followership theory (LIFT) and employees' career success using cognitive information processing theory and social exchange theory. Data were obtained from 296 employees and their immediate superiors at 12 large Chinese enterprises. Results showed that positive LIFT had a significantly positive effect on employees' career success, that this positive relationship was partially mediated by leader-member exchange and perceived organizational support, and that leaders' liking for their followers moderated the relationship between positive LIFT and leader-member exchange/perceived organizational support. We have not only extended the application of cognitive theory in leadership research, but also enriched the content of social exchange theory.
An Understanding of Implicit Followership Toward New Employees' Self-Efficacy: The Mediating Role of Perceived Supervisor Support

Abstract:Under turbulent, boundaryless, and Internet age, the characteristics of career sustainability development have shifted from the perspective of development within the organization to the career development track of self-efficacy. New employees usually face the difficult stage of adapting to the new environment and establishing interpersonal relationships with new colleagues. When new employees enter an organization, they usually have different implicit followership cognitions. Previous studies have focused on the treatment of new employees by the organization and the leader, however, the implicit followership cognitive state of new employees has not been studied specifically. This research integrates employees' positive and negative implicit followership, perceived supervisor support, workplace friendship, and perceived self-efficacy into a research framework. This study used a questionnaire survey by an online professional survey website. A total of 394 valid questionnaires were collected. Structural equation model (SEM) analysis was carried out and according to the results, new employees' positive and negative implicit followership significantly affects perceived supervisor support. Furthermore, perceived supervisor support had a significant impact on perceived self-efficacy. Moreover, perceived supervisor support was found in a mediating role between the relationship of implicit followership theories and perceived self-efficacy. Finally, workplace friendship was found to be a significant moderator in the relationship between perceived supervisor support and perceived self-efficacy. Based on the research results, business managers are suggested to pay more attention to new employees' self-cognition of their job roles and enhance the self-efficacy of new employees in the entry stage.

Abstract:Although much research has been done on employee collective identification with the organization and the work unit, the role of followers’ personal identification with the leader in followers’ work outcomes has not been fully examined. Drawing on research on transformational leadership and social identity theory, the authors examined a partial nomological network of personal identification with the leader and its mediating effects. Abstract:Corporate social responsibility (CSR) research is not new, but its importance to today's socially conscious market environment is even more evident in recent years. This study moves beyond CSR as simply the socially responsible actions and policies of organizations and focuses on the complex psychology of CSR as it relates to individuals within the organization. Given CSR can positively affect both the individuals within the organization and the organization itself, better understanding and leveraging the mechanisms and conditions of CSR that facilitate desired employee outcomes is crucial for organizational performance. However, scholars lack consensus in determining a theoretical framework for understanding how and under what conditions CSR will make an impact on employees and ultimately organizational performance. This study adds clarity by exploring the effect of perceived CSR on a more comprehensive set of employees' attitudinal and behavioral reactions (i.e., turnover intention, in-role job performance, and helping behavior) via the mediating mechanism of organizational identification and the moderating condition of moral identity. Hypotheses were derived using social identity theory. Results were based on data obtained from 340 Chinese manufacturing employee-supervisor dyads. This study found that employees' perceived CSR had an indirect relationship via organizational identification with each of the variables: (1) turnover intention, (2) in-role job performance, and (3) helping behavior. Specifically, the negative relationship between perceived CSR and turnover intention was stronger when employees had higher moral identity and the positive relationship between perceived CSR and in-role job performance and helping behavior was amplified by moral identity. Our findings show how the mediating mechanism of organizational identity and the moderating condition of moral identity work together to improve organizational effectiveness. The findings reveal several ways in which organizations can strategically focus their CSR and human resource efforts, such as applying this model and focusing on moral identity as a key indicator when evaluating employees.

Abstract:Based on the literatures about performance models and the implicit performance model, the present study used the experimental simulation method, analyzed the effect of the implicit performance model on managerial decisions. It showed that in different managerial decision tasks, decision makers had different implicit performance models; the implicit model changed with the tasks; the implicit model affected the decision biases, and the contextual performance had compensation effects on task performance to some degree.

Abstract:In the Chinese society, where power distance is high, leaders’ attitudes and behavior toward employees determine their career development as well as affect the entire team’s performance. Therefore, exploring the kind of employees that leaders expect in China is essential. Based on implicit followership theory perspective, this study considers leaders’ positive implicit followership (LPIF) as the main research variable and examines its influence on employees’ innovative behavior (EIB). Moreover, it explores the multiple mediation effect of the leader–member exchange (LMX) relationship and psychological empowerment (PE) in this influence mechanism. The study sample comprised 389 leaders and their direct employees at 45 large- and medium-sized enterprises in Shandong, Beijing, Hebei, Shanghai, Shanxi, Zhejiang, and other regions of China. We used the leader–employee 1:1 matching questionnaire, and the longitudinal research design was adopted to avoid homology variance, making the study results more realistic and reliable. This study used the SPSS 26.0 and AMOS 26.0 statistical software to verify the hypotheses. Our findings show that LPIF has a significant positive effect on EIB, and LMX and PE have multiple mediation effects on the relationship between LPIF and EIB. When the level of LPIF is high, LMX and PE are also enhanced, which in turn promotes the increase in EIB. This study provides a new perspective for subsequent research on the psychological mechanism of employees and suggests an important method for understanding leadership and following processes in an organization. It plays a guiding role for the management practice of an enterprise, selection of leaders, and training of employees.

Abstract:The transfer model of organizational identification (OI) posits a trickle‐down process of OI from leaders to followers. This, in turn, should foster employees’ willingness to engage in extra‐role behaviour. Prior research has provided consistent support for the model in field studies and experimental settings. The present studies extend the OI transfer model by examining the mediating role of transformational leadership (TFL) behaviour in the leader OI‐follower OI link. Using a multi‐level, multi‐source approach we tested our model in two studies. Study 1 was conducted in Germany (N= 18 leaders and 216 employees) and provided support for the proposed mediation process. In a second Study, which was conducted in China (N= 44 leaders and 109 followers), we were able to replicate and extend these findings. Again, leader behaviour mediated the link between leader OI and employee OI. Additionally, we found that leader transformational behaviour and employee OI together mediated the link between leader OI and employee extra‐role efforts.Practitioner Points Given that organizations are generally structured in a pyramid‐shaped form, the present findings suggest that leader OI can be highly leveraged since it appears to cascade down the organizational hierarchy. Hence, measures fostering leader OI appear to be effective and efficient means to increase followers’ identification with the organization. Follower OI, in turn, positively relates to employee extra‐effort on behalf of the organization. Furthermore, our findings suggest that this transfer of OI is not restricted to leader‐follower links in western, individualistic societies but also applies to China, characterized by more collectivistic values.

Abstract:The main purpose of this study is to investigate whether Social Cognitive Career Theory can be applied to the specific group of Chinese managers.Findings from this study generally supported the application of SCCT to explaining their career choice processes,though some of the paths of this model had not been well tested.More specifically,managers' outcome expectations directly predicted interest in management while managerial self-efficacy showed no significant effect on interest.Their self-efficacy and outcome expectations both significantly contributed to their career commitment while interest showed no significant influence on it.Their self-efficacy and career commitment both had a direct effect on their own career management activities.Social/economic factors showed no significant influence on their career commitment but significantly affected their own career management activities.Career management activities carried out by organizations had a direct effect on their career commitment and their own career management activities.Lastly,both their career management activities and self-efficacy significantly contributed to their performance accomplishments.

Abstract:Drawing on implicit leadership theory (ILT) research, we develop and test a model that explains why integrating transformational leadership and servant leadership may achieve enhanced leader effectiveness. Using a sample of 237 hairstylists and 474 of their customers representing 31 salons, we confirm the augmentation effects of transformational leadership and servant leadership on followers' perceptions of leader stereotypicality (i.e., the extent to which a leader matches followers' implicit theories of leaders) and on customer satisfaction. However, we do not find the hypothesized interaction effect of transformational and servant leadership. Implications are discussed and directions for future research are suggested.

Abstract:Implicit theories refer to people’s naïve beliefs about the nature of human attributes (e.g., whether people’s ability is fixed or can be changed). A wealth of research in psychology has demonstrated the importance of implicit theories for people’s motivation and behavior, but limited research has examined their relevance for management. How followers' perception of followership prototype–traits fit impacts their job performance: a moderated polynomial regression analysis

Abstract:Introduction: Previous studies about the drivers of follower performance focused on leadership, and most followership studies have used a single perspective to investigate this topic from the followers' lens. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore whether , how , and when followers' perception of followership prototype–traits fit influences their job performance. Methods: The study adopted a questionnaire survey (Study 1) and a scenario experiment (Study 2). First, in the questionnaire survey, we collected 72 leaders and 262 followers from 72 teams of 14 companies in China using a two–wave research design. Second, in the scenario experiment, we invited 160 undergraduates from a university in southwest China to participate in the experiment after verifying the effectiveness of the manipulated materials. Results: (1) compared with the misfit, followership prototype–traits fit is more likely to stimulate followers' taking charge; (2) compared with low levels of fit, high-level followership prototype–traits fit is more likely to stimulate followers' taking charge; (3) compared with high followership prototype and low followership traits condition, low followership prototype and high followership traits condition is more likely to stimulate followers' taking charge; (4) followers' taking charge mediates the impact of the followership prototype–traits fit on followers' job performance; and (5) the impact of followership prototype–traits fit on followers' taking charge is more salient for male followers than for female followers. Discussion: This study not only helps capture the bidirectional and complex process of the interaction between leaders and followers during the followership, but also obtains a more comprehensive understanding of how this interaction affects followers' behaviors and performance. The results have practical implications for improving followers' job performance by highlighting the effects of followership prototype–traits fit on followers' behaviors and performance.

How and When Does Leader Humility Enhance Employee Proactive Career Behavior

Abstract:In this research, we drew upon implicit leadership theory to examine the joint effects of leader humility, follower power distance, and follower narcissism on proactive career behavior via perceived leader competence. Specifically, we proposed that leader humility would be perceived as more competent for the employees with lower power distance; we also proposed two competing predictions about the interactive effect of leader humility and follower narcissism on leader competence from two different theoretical perspectives (i.e., opposite-attraction perspective vs. similar-attraction perspective). We tested our hypotheses using a multi-waves and time-lagged survey with 281 subordinate-supervisor dyads from 87 teams. The results of our studies demonstrate that the followers with low power distance and low narcissism are more likely to perceive higher leader humility to be more competent and thus increase their proactive career behavior. We discuss the theoretical and practical implications of these findings.
Spotlight on the Followers: an Examination of Moderators of Relationships Between Transformational Leadership and Subordinates' Citizenship and Taking Charge

Abstract:Drawing on substitutes for leadership theory, we revisit an often taken‐for‐granted assumption that transformational leadership is a universally positive management practice by examining subordinate‐based aspects attenuating the relationship between transformational leadership and followers’ citizenship and taking charge. Using data collected from 196 followers and their leaders situated in 55 workgroups in 2 Chinese organizations, we found that followers’ citizenship and taking charge were not influenced by transformational leadership when followers perceived leaders as prototypical and were highly identified with their workgroups. Furthermore, following a differential pattern for citizenship and taking charge, followers’ traditionality weakened the relationship with citizenship, whereas followers’ learning goal orientation attenuated the relationship with taking charge. Introducing contingencies and specifying their underlying logic broadens the current theoretical spectrum for both substitutes for leadership and transformational leadership.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationships between supervisor-subordinate deep-level similarity and employee taking charge behavior. Face consciousness (FC) and managerial competency of inclusion (MCI) are examined as moderators. Design/methodology/approach Responses from 193 employees and 51 supervisors were examined using hierarchical linear analysis to assess the relationship between the study variables because employee responses were nested within supervisor. Findings Supervisor-subordinate deep-level similarity is positively associated with employee taking charge behavior. Employee FC moderates the relationship between deep-level similarity and taking charge. MCI also moderates the relationships between deep-level similarity and taking charge. Research limitations/implications The study is cross-sectional; longitudinal studies are needed to examine the relationships among study variables over time. This work should also be extended to the western context. The findings highlight deep-level similarity as predictive of taking charge while also identifying MCI and FC as important for understanding what predicts taking charge. Practical implications The findings can be used to develop managerial training programs that foster competency of inclusion. It is possible to develop organizational interventions (selection and training) to maximize employees and manager congruence/fit. Originality/value This study is a novel contribution that investigates facet of proactive behaviors. Examining the moderating roles of FC and MCI further elucidates how similarity fosters taking charge behaviors.

Abstract:Contrasted to most leadership research which treated followers either as non-existent or as passive entities, follower moqi enriches followership literature by stressing followers’ active role in co-creating leadership and outcomes with leaders. Given the effectiveness of follower moqi in the leadership process, we integrated social information processing theory to explore its antecedents and outcomes. Specifically, we hypothesized that leader humility is positively related to follower moqi; follower moqi, in turn, decreases knowledge hiding; this mechanism of follower moqi is moderated by follower humility so that leader humility increases more follower moqi with higher follower humility. Our results supported our hypotheses in a muti-wave time-lagged study of 315 leader-follower dyads. Overall, our research highlights that leader humility has a stronger effect on follower moqi under the context of higher follower humility. In addition, follower moqi in turn decreases knowledge hiding. The theoretical and practical implications of this study are presented and discussed.

The authors also aim to test the mediating effects of employee inclusion of leader in self and the moderating effects of future orientation. Methods: This paper tests the theoretical model across a multisource, time-lagged field study with 234 leader-follower dyads as data. SPSS 25.0, PROCESS 3.4 macro and Mplus8.3 were used to test the theoretical hypotheses. Results: We found that visionary leadership stimulates followers to include leaders in self, which in turn enhances their taking charge. Additionally, the relationship between visionary leadership and follower include of leader in self is strengthened by followers' future orientation. Furthermore, the mediation effect of follower include leader in self between visionary leadership and followers' taking charge is established only when followers' future orientation is high. Conclusion: Based on self-expansion theory, this study explained how and when the effectiveness of visionary leadership may be optimized from a follower-centric perspective. These results contribute to the visionary leadership and self-expansion literature by introducing inclusion of leader in self as an underlying mechanism and future orientation as a boundary condition. Keywords: visionary leadership, taking charge, inclusion of leader in self, future orientation, self-expansion theory With the rapid development of emerging technologies such as big data, artificial intelligence and cloud computing, as well as the acceleration of economic globalization, organizations are required to constantly change to obtain competitive advantages. 1 In this process, employees taking charge behaviour may play an important role, 2 which focuses on positive or constructive change. 3 However, COVID-19 has had an unexpected impact, not only producing inestimable global health and economic disruptions 4 but also increasing the sense of helplessness and uncertainty among employees in the workplace, 5 which greatly reduces the likelihood that employees will implement taking charge behaviour. 6 Therefore, improving followers certainty and initiative consciousness is crucial for the development of enterprises. 7 As a future-oriented style of leadership, visionary leadership may play an important role in triggering followers' taking charge, which can lead them to discover opportunities together and encourage them to voluntarily approach their common vision. 8 However, we still know little about how and when visionary leadership stimulates employees' taking charge from a follower-centric perspective. The favorable effect of visionary leadership has been demonstrated in different domains, 9,10 especially for enterprise development at the organizational level. 11 However, there is no consensus on the effectiveness of visionary leadership on followers' cognitive and behavioral reactions. On the one hand, most scholars propose that visionary leadership can stimulate followers to pursue the same vision, 12 engage in citizenship behavior 13,14 and improve their evaluation of the leader's effectiveness. 15 It can also improve followers' job outcomes. 16,17 On the other hand, some scholars believe that visionary leadership produces negative effects, demonstrating that it does not result in followers' emotional commitment and may even reduce their sustainable commitment. 18 According to these inconsistent conclusions, it is necessary to conduct a deeper analysis of how visionary leadership affects employee taking charge behavior. A possible reason for these contradictory research conclusions is that leader-centric factors have been overemphasized in studies exploring the effectiveness of visionary leadership, 19,20 and thus, the deeper psychological mechanism and conditions of a follower-centric perspective may be ignored. 21 As a future-oriented style of leadership, visionary leadership may play an important role in triggering followers' taking charge behaviors through vision communication (eg, taking charge), which can encourage followers to collaborate on opportunities and voluntarily approach their common vision. 8 Self-expansion theory provides an appropriate th -Abstract Truncated-
