Abstract:The bonding and organization of 1,1,2,3,4,5-hexaphenysilole (HPS) molecules adsorbed on Cu(111) and Ag(111) surfaces has been investigated using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In room-temperature-prepared samples, HPS molecules form extended networks that exhibit hierarchical organization stabilized by pi-pi interaction between exocyclic phenyl groups. After 430 K annealing on Cu(111), the compound is chemically altered as evidenced by Si 2p core level shift. This change is accompanied by a different adsorption configuration and a transformation of the assembled structures from networks to uniformly sized chiral clusters. The clusters, each composed of three molecules, are dispersively distributed on the surface. Monte Carlo simulations signal that this new phase can be understood as a result of competing long-range repulsions and short-range attractions. After even higher annealing at 520 K, the clusters dissolve and the exocyclic phenyl moieties undergo a cyclodehydrogenation reaction to form a polycyclic aromatic compound incorporating a silole moiety. In sharp contrast, on Ag(111), the HPS molecules do not show these changes but desorb from the surface at elevated temperatures. Our results demonstrate that the two-dimensional supramolecular assembly of intact HPS is insensitive to the choice of substrate at room temperature, but at high temperatures, the substrates chemical activity can induce selective chemical transformations resulting in a significantly different assembly behavior.
Silole‐containing Poly(silylenevinylene)s: Synthesis, Characterization, Aggregation‐enhanced Emission, and Explosive Detection

Abstract:Hydrosilylation polymerizations of 1,1-dimethyl-2,5-bis(4-ethynylphenyl)-3,4-diphenylsilole with aromatic silylhydrides including 1,4-bis(dimethylsilyl)benzene, 4,4'-bis(dimethylsilyl) biphenyl, 2,5-bis(dimethylsilyl) thiophene, and 2,7-bis(dimethylsilyl)-9,9-dihexylfluorene in the presence of Rh(PPh3)(3)Cl catalyst in refluxed tetrahydrofuran afford a series of silole-containing poly(silylenevinylene)s. Under optimum condition, the alkyne polyhydrosilylation reactions progress efficiently and regioselectively, yielding polymers with high molecular weights (M-w up to 95,300) and good stereoregularity (E content close to 99%) in high yields (up to 92%). The polymers are processable and thermally stable, with high decomposition temperatures in the range of 420-449 degrees C corresponding to 5% weight loss. They are weakly fluorescent in the solution state but become emissive in the aggregate and film states, demonstrating their aggregation-enhanced emission characteristics. The explosive sensing capabilities of the polymers are examined in both solution and aggregate states. The emissions of the polymers aggregates in aqueous mixture are quenched more efficiently by picric acid in an exponential pattern with high quenching constants (up to 27,949 L mol(-1)), suggesting that the polymers aggregates are sensitive chemosensors for explosive detection. Abstract:Synthesis and reactivity of disilicon(0) complexes are of fundamental and application importance. Herein, we report the development of an N-heterocyclic imino-substituted silylene (1), which has strong σ-donating ability and is significantly sterically hindered. The one-pot reaction of this silylene with [IPr→SiCl2 ] (IPr=1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-imidazol-2-ylidene) and KC8 (2 equiv) in THF at -30 °C leads to a silylene-ligated disilicon(0) complex (2), isolated as red crystals in 60 % yield. Characterization data and DFT calculations show that the trans-bent Si4 skeleton in 2 features a Si0 =Si0 double bond with significant π-π bonding and one lone pair of electrons on each of these two Si0 atoms. Complex 2 reacts readily with phenylacetylene, producing a structurally intriguing silatricyclic complex 6,8-diaza-1,2,5-trisilatricyclo-[3.2.1.02,7 ]-oct-3-ene (3), and revealing new aspects of low-valent silicon chemistry.

Abstract:1-Trimethylsilyl, 1-R (R = Me, Et, i-Bu)-2,3,4,5-tetraphenyl-1-silacyclopentadiene [[Ph₄C₄Si(SiMe₃)]R] are synthesized from the reaction of 1-trimethylsilyl,1-lithio-2,3,4,5-tetraphenyl-1-silacyclopentadienide anion [[Ph₄C₄Si(SiMe₃]⁻•[Li]⁺ (3) with methyl iodide, ethyl iodide, and i-butyl bromide. The versatile intermediate 3 is prepared by hemisilylation of the silole dianion [Ph₄C₄Si]⁻²•2[Li]⁺ (2) with trimethylsilyl chloride and characterized by ¹H-, ¹³C-, and ²⁹Si-NMR spectroscopy. 1,1-bis(R)-2,3,4,5-tetraphenyl-1-silacyclopentadiene [Ph₄C₄SiR₂] {R = n-Bu (7); t-Bu (8)} are synthesized from the reaction of 2 with n-butyl bromide and t-butyl bromide. Reduction of 7 and 8 with lithium under sonication gives the respective 3-silolenide 2,5-carbodianions {[Ph₄C₄Si(n-Bu)₂]⁻²•2[Li]⁺ (10) and {[Ph₄C₄Si(t-Bu)₂]⁻²•2[Li]⁺ (11)}, which are characterized by ¹H-, ¹³C-, and ²⁹Si-NMR spectroscopy. Polarization of phenyl groups in 3 is compared with those of silole anion/dianion, germole anion/dianion, and 3-silolenide 2,5-carbodianions 10 and 11.

Abstract:Bis(1-adamantyl)phosphanylsilylene ( 1 ) was reacted with ArC≡CR (Ar = Ph, 4- i Pr-C 6 H 4 , 3-F-C 6 H 4 ; R = H, Ph) at 80 o C under microwave to afford fluorescence active SiP-heterocycles 3 a-d , which may undergo unique isomerizations starting from silirene intermediates. Moreover, the treatment of 1 with AdC≡P furnished a heavy congener of cyclopentadiene ( 4 ), whose formation involves a cleavage of the Si(II)-P bond that was rarely observed in the silylene chemistry.

Abstract:The signature reactivity of silacyclobutane (SCB) is their cycloaddition reactions with various π bonds. Recently we disclosed the first cases where SCBs reacted with both C sp2 -H and C sp3 -H σ bonds in an intramolecular fashion. Herein, we report that SCB is also an efficient reagent for C sp -H bond silylation. Thus, rhodium catalysed intermolecular reactions between SCBs and terminal alkynes produced a series of symmetrical and unsymmetrical tetraorganosilicons bearing a C sp -Si functionality. Our preliminary studied suggested that the reaction did not involve a cycloaddition pathway, but instead a direct activation of C sp -H bonds.

Abstract:Silacyclobutane was discovered to be an efficient C−H bond silylation reagent. Under the catalysis of Rh I /TMS‐segphos, silacyclobutane undergoes sequential C−Si/C−H bond activations, affording a series of π‐conjugated siloles in high yields and regioselectivities. The catalytic cycle was proposed to involve a rarely documented endocyclic β‐hydride elimination of five‐membered metallacycles, which after reductive elimination gave rise to a Si−Rh I species that is capable of C−H activation.

Abstract:While the dithiolene-based N-heterocyclic silane ( 4 ) reacts with two equivalents of BX 3 (X = Br, I) to give zwitterionic Lewis adducts 5 and 8 , respectively, the parallel reaction of 4 with BCl 3 results in 10, a dithiolene-substituted N-heterocyclic silane, via the Si–S bond cleavage. Unlike 5 , the labile 8 may be readily converted to 9 via BI 3 -mediated cleavage of the Si–N bond. The formation of 5 and 8 confirms that 4 uniquely possesses dual nucleophilic sites: (a) the terminal sulphur atom of the dithiolene moiety; and (b) the backbone carbon of the N-heterocyclic silane unit.

Abstract:Treatment of bis(phenylethynyl)silane (PhC=C)(2)SiR2 (R = Me (2a), Et (2b) or Ph (2c)) with Cp2ZrEt2 (1) (Cp = cyclopentadienyl) and H2O/CuCl in this order afforded (1E,3E)-1,4-diphenyl-1,3-butadiene (3) in 56-88% yields after hydrolysis. On the other hand, hydrolysis of the reaction mixture of 2a-h with Cp2ZrEt2 gave silacyclobutene derivatives 4a-h in 61-87% yields. Zirconium-containing intermediate 7 was obtained as crystals suitable for X-ray analysis when t-BuC5H4 was used as the ligands of a zirconocene derivative. Structure of 7 showed that the intermediate contained the zirconacyclobutene-silacyclobutene fused ring system. Reaction of silacyclobutene 4a with CuCl selectively opened the silacyclobutene ring. The further treatment of the reaction mixture with PhI in the presence of a catalytic amount of Pd(PPh3)(4) gave 1,3,4-triphenyl-1-silyl-1,3-butadiene compound 16. Zirconacyclopentadienes with an alkynylsilyl group at the alpha-position afforded zirconacyclohexadiene derivatives 19 in 82-98% yields. When t-BuC5H4 was used as the ligands instead of two Cp, the structure was determined by X-ray analysis. The structure clearly showed that 19 had the zirconacyclohexadiene-silacyclobutene fused ring system.

Abstract:The salt metathesis of a boryl-ethynyl lithium salt {[(HCDipN) 2 ]B-CC-Li} with a monochlorosilylene [LSi(:)Cl; L = PhC(N t Bu) 2 ] produced an isolable boryl-ethynyl silylene { 1 ; [(HCDipN) 2 ]B–CC–Si(L)}. The Si( II ) center in 1 possesses a nonbonding lone pair and forms a covalent bond with the ethynyl group. The characterization of 1 was carried out by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, single-crystal X-ray structure analysis and DFT calculations. Additionally, a reactivity study of 1 was conducted towards oxygen-containing and aryl C–F substrates.

Abstract:Both carbophilic addition and thiophilic addition were involved in the first step intermolecular reaction of 1,4-dilithio-1,33-diene derivatives with carbon disulfide. Thus in situ generated carbophilic addition intermediates and thiophilic addition intermediates underwent a second step intramolecular carbophilic and thiophilic additions. Multiply substituted thiophenes were isolated as the results of cleavage of the C=S double bonds, while thiopyran-2-thiones were produced via cycloaddition reactions. In addition to 1,4-dilithio-1,3-dienes, monolithio reagents also showed interesting reactions with carbon disulfide. Thiophenes were also generated in the reaction of 1-lithio-1,3-dienes with carbon disulfide.

Abstract:Reaction of the bulky N-heterocyclic silylene Si[NB(NArCH)2CH2]2 (3; Ar = 2,6-iPr2C6H3) with BCl3 resulted in ring expansion with formation of the six-membered C2N2SiB heterocycle 4. Reduction of 4 with lithium afforded the first silanorcaradienyllithium 5, which presumably formed by intramolecular cyclopropanation of a lithium-substituted borylsilylene intermediate with one of the aryl C═C bonds. Treatment of 5 with MeOTf and Et3NHCl led to electrophilic substitution accompanied by the SiC2 ring expansion to give silacycloheptatrienes (silepins) 6 and 7, respectively. The addition of 1,3,4,5-tetramethylimidazol-2-ylidene (NHCMe) to silepin 7 yielded the NHC-stabilized hydrosilylene 8 with the silicon atom free from the silepin ring. The formation of 5 could be attributed to the unique electronic structure of the lithium-substituted silylene, which has been predicted to be in a triplet ground state with a relatively large singlet-triplet energy gap by theoretical calculations.

Abstract:The stable ferrocene‐based N‐heterocyclic silylenes fc[(N{B})2Si] (A; fc = 1,1'‐ferrocenylene, {B} = (HCNDipp)2B, Dipp = 2,6‐diisopropylphenyl) and fc[(NDipp)2Si] (B) are compared in a study focussing on their reactivity towards a range of small to moderately sized molecular substrates, viz. P4, S8, Se8, MesN3 (Mes = mesityl), RC≡CH, and RC≡CR (R = Ph, SiMe3). The Dipp‐substituted congener B exhibits a more pronounced ambiphilicity and is sterically less congested than its 1,3,2‐diazaborolyl‐substituted relative A, in line with the higher reactivity of the former. The difference in reactivity is obviously due more to electronic than to steric reasons, as is illustrated by the fact that both A and B react with the comparatively bulky substrate MesN3 under mild conditions to afford the corresponding silanimine fc[(N{B})2Si=NMes] and fc[(NDipp)2Si=NMes], respectively. The heavier ketone analogues fc[(N{B})2Si=E] (E = S, Se, Te) are readily available from A and the corresponding chalcogen. In contrast, the reaction of the more reactive silylene B with elemental sulfur or selenium is unspecific, affording product mixtures. However, fc[(NDipp)2Si=Se] is selectively prepared from B and (Et2N)3PSe; the Te analogue is also accessible, but crystallises as head‐to‐tail dimer.

Abstract:Pentacoordinate silicon derivatives with a chloromethyl ligand are versatile compounds that are usually obtained from the corresponding tetravalent trialkoxy- or trihalogeno(chloromethyl)silane. We describe herein the synthesis of a chloromethylsilicate bearing two Martin's ligands readily obtained by addition of in situ generated chloromethyllithium to a spirosilane. The reactivity of this new species was evaluated and it has been established that the chloride is displaced by strong nucleophiles such as alkyllithiums and (hetero)aryllithiums. In Lewis acidic conditions, the pentacoordinate silicon species rearranges through a formal insertion of a methylene into one Si-C bond, to form a new tetravalent spirosilane with a six-membered ring. The same kind of rearrangement can be triggered also by addition of a Lewis base. The mechanism of the rearrangement in both conditions has been studied by means of DFT calculations.
