Abstract:We characterize spin dependent kinetics of polaron pairs (PP) reactions in polymer organic light emitting diodes (OLED) based on a derivative of poly(phenylene-vinylene) [PPV], namely MEH-PPV as the active layer, using the dynamic response of the magnetic resonance effect on electroluminescence, injected current, and photocurrent. We found that at 10K and under forward bias, the in-phase component of both electroluminescence detected magnetic resonance (ELDMR) and current detected magnetic resonance (CDMR) responses are positive at low microwave modulation frequency, f; but both reverse sign at a frequency f0 that depends on the microwave power, current density, and device architecture. The similarity between ELDMR and CDMR response dynamics show that the two phenomena share a common origin. We identify the underlying ELDMR mechanism as due to current density increase under resonance conditions. From a model fit to the data that involves both spin singlet and triplet PP dynamics, we obtained their effective recombination and spin-lattice relaxation rates. We found that the spin-lattice relaxation rate in the active layer increases with the current density in the device, showing the importance of spin–spin interaction in spin dependent reactions in OLED. Unlike ELDMR and CDMR the reverse bias photocurrent detected magnetic resonance (PCDMR) is negative at low f. The negative sign is the result of the dynamic equilibrium between the resonantly reduced PP density and the photogenerated mobile charge carrier density.

Abstract:A dye-doped polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) film has been fabricated for random lasing action. In this PDLC film, the sizes of most liquid crystal (LC) droplets ranged from 200 to 500 nm. When the sample is optically pumped, ultrahigh Q (>10 000) lasing modes and a collimated laser beam can be observed. The threshold of the random laser is shown to be 0.23 mJ/cm(2). Additionally, a 9.2-V/mu m external electric field was applied to control the orientations of LC molecules, thereby obtaining a switchable random laser. Consequently, the linewidth, intensity, and polarization of the emitted random laser are controlled.

Abstract:The coherent random laser (CRL) from dye-doped polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) has been investigated in both nanoparticle-doped (NP-doped) thin films and pure dye thin films. Compared with the literature, the pump threshold is only 1.5 mJ/cm2 in the pure dye thin film with a low dye concentration. The spontaneously formed micro-/nanocrystals of Pyrromethene 597 (PM597) dye support both gain and random feedback in the bulk of the PDMS during the sample preparation. When the SiO2 NPs were doped, the pump threshold was reduced to 0.75 mJ/cm2. The threshold increased after the film was peeled off from glass, which indicates that the photon localization effect of the leaky-waveguide structure plays an important role in the reduction of the CRL threshold. By a change in the pump stripe length or the thickness of the film, the peak wavelength red-shifts 6.7 or 5.93 nm, respectively. The PM597 dye molecule solubility changes, and they spontaneously aggregate in the process of toluene volatilization; the PDMS cures, which is the reason for the formation of PM597 micro-/nanocrystals. This thin film random laser with a low dye concentration can be used in integrated optoelectronics and display imaging.
Bichromatic Coherent Random Lasing from Dye-Doped Polymer Stabilized Blue Phase Liquid Crystals Controlled by Pump Light Polarization

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the bichromatic coherent random lasing actions from the dye-doped polymer stabilized blue phase liquid crystals. Two groups of lasing peaks, of which the full widith at half maximum is about 0.3 nm, are clearly observed. The shorter-and longer-wavelength modes are associated with the excitation of the single laser dye (DCM) monomers and dimers respectively. The experimental results show that the competition between the two groups of the lasing peaks can be controlled by varying the polarization of the pump light. When the polarization of the pump light is rotated from 0 degrees to 90 degrees, the intensity of the shorter-wavelength lasing peak group reduces while the intensity of the longer-wavelength lasing peak group increases. In addition, a red shift of the longer-wavelength modes is also observed and the physical mechanisms behind the red-shift phenomenon are discussed.

Abstract:Ultraviolet random lasing from ZnO and Mg(0.1)Zn(0.9)O films have been achieved under optical pump of a continuous wave He-Cd laser as the films are simultaneously exerted by an electric-field with appropriate polarity and amplitude. With the aid of electric-field, the optical pump intensity for generating random lasing can be reduced at least five orders of magnitude in comparison with conventional pulse-laser pumped ones. It is believed that the role of electric-field exerted on the films is similar to that of increasing optical pump intensity, in terms of increasing the amount of non-equilibrium electrons in the near-surface regions of films.

Abstract:Using thin stripe excitation of a 10 ns pulsed laser, we observed robust and bright random laser (RL) emission in high concentrated solutions of poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)- 1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MEH-PPV) and poly [2,6-(4,4-bis-(2-ethylhexyl)-4H-cyclopenta[2,1-b; 3,4-b']-dithiophene)- alt-4,7-(2,1,3-benzothiadiazole)] (PCPDTBT). In particular, within the proper excitation intensity range, single line RL emission is observed in both solutions, with full width at half-maximum of 0.17 nm and 0.4 nm for MEH-PPV and PCPDTBT, respectively. The reason for the random laser is that the refractive index fluctuation due to the aggregation in concentrated solution results in spatially extended random lasing modes, which are amplified through traveling light along the interface between solution and cuvette. Our work provides a simple but effective method to achieve bright single-mode RLs, with conversion efficiency on the order of 10%. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:The random laser from sheared dye-doped polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (DDPDLC) is investigated. As the emission intensity weakens, the threshold of random laser from DDPDLC increases from 2.0 mJ/pulse to 4.0 mJ/pulse, and the degree of polarization (DOP) increases from 0.1 to 0.78, obviously when the shear distance increases from 0 mm to 4 mm. As the liquid crystal droplets are gradually oriented in the shear direction caused by alignment direction of polymer chain and anisotropy of droplet shape, the scattering intensity perpendicular to the shear direction gradually decreases and that parallel to the shear direction gradually increases. The anisotropic absorption of the laser dye also plays a certain role as the shear distance is 0 mm. The controllable intensity and polarization degree of random laser have a huge potential for sensing applications.

Abstract:The observation of random laser (RL) with coherent feedback in transparent polymer films based on Rh6G-PVP by spin-coating was carried out in the present investigation. Some sharp peaks with FWHM identified to be 2 nm appeared on the fluorescent spectra of polymer films which pumped by Nd:YLF pulse laser (wavelength: 526nm, frequence: 1Hz, pulse duration: 1ns, energy power: 1.2mJ/pulse). The threshold of emission spectra is ~35 and the spectra range from 570 ~ 610 nm. Streak camera was used to record the temporal process of RLs and the pulse duration time was measured to ~400ps. Rh6G-PVP transparent films were a kind of polymer films with numerous nanogaps distributed randomly on the surface of the film. The photons will be multiple scatterred and amplified during the spreading in the polymer film owing to the refractive index difference between nanogaps and polymer films. As the Rh6G-PVP polymer films have characters of convenient fabrication processes, low threshold and low cost, it shows great potential application in photoelectron and laser imaging.

Abstract:Electrically tunable random laser action has been demonstrated in a cavity-free structure. The scattering structure was shaped by the treatment of AC, and a polymer network structure is introduced to fix it. The fluorescence of the laser dye is scattered internally and selectively amplified at the band-edge of the photonic crystal, due to the concentrate of the photonic density of state. As the electric field increased, the deformation of the polymer network causes the cholesteric liquid crystal pitch to form a gradient distribution, resulting in the widening of the bandgap, and the random laser wavelength changes accordingly. This random laser with a broad tuning range (similar to 100 nm) opens new possibilities for the design of highly efficient incoherent light source in a large area with a thickness of micron level.

Abstract:The photovoltaic behaviors of diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) embedded poly(phenylenevinylene) (C8-DPP-PPV) and poly(phenyleneethynylene) (C10-DPP-PPE) were investigated. The two polymers exhibited good solubility in common organic solvents, high thermal stability and broad UV/visible absorption ranging from 300 to 600nm in films. Their optical band gaps were found to be 1.94eV for C8-DPP-PPV and 2.05eV for C10-DPP-PPE. Moreover, their HOMO energy levels were relatively low at around −5.6 to −5.8eV as estimated by electrochemical measurements. The polymer/PCBM bulk heterojunction solar cells exhibited a power conversion efficiency of 0.16% for C10-DPP-PPE. In addition, all-polymer solar cells consisting of C10-DPP-PPE/P3HT were also fabricated in view of the potential of C10-DPP-PPE as a polymeric acceptor, revealing an efficiency of 0.01%.

Abstract:A novel alternating conjugated copolymer (poly [(dioctyloxyphenylene vinylene)-alt-(2,1,3-benzothiadiazole)], C8-PPV-BT) consisting of electron-rich dioctyloxybenzene and electron-deficient 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole repeat units was synthesized via a Pd-catalyzed Heck cross-coupling polycondensation. The thermal, electrochemical, optical properties, and photophysics of C8-PPV-BT blended with [6,6]-phenyl-C-61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) have been investigated. Photovoltaic devices of ITO/PEDOT-PSS/C8-PPV-BT + PCBM (1/4, w/w)/Ba/Al were fabricated and their photovoltaic parameters were measured. The results showed the energy conversion efficiency (17,) and external quantum efficiency (EQE) were 0.335 and 11.7% (451 nm), respectively, under simulated solar light illumination having light intensity of 78.2 mW (.) (cm(2))(-1) (AM1.5), which were both higher than those of devices based on poly [(dioctyloxyphenylene ethynylene)-alt-(2,1,3-benzothiadiazole)] (C8-PPE-BT) and PCBM blend under the same conditions. Optical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties of C8-PPV-BT and C8-PPE-BT copolymers were also compared and discussed.

Abstract:A thermally tunable random laser in dye-doped liquid crystals (DDLCs) is reported. The gain medium of PM597 dye-doped E7 nematic LC is injected into a glass cell. The experimental results show that the random lasing is still obtained when the cell temperature becomes higher, even above the nematic-isotropic transition, and that its polarization changes at the same time. Temperature has little effect on the full width at half maxiumum of the random lasing. The center wavelength of the random lasing shifts from 575.69nm to 593.43nm when the temperature increases from 25.5 degrees C to 148 degrees C. Meanwhile, a random laser based on a solution of laser dye is first reported in this article. The reasons are possibly that nanoparticles consisting of dye molecules provide a new scattering mechanism in both solution and isotropic phase.

Abstract:Polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) are composite materials which usually obtained by the phase separation during polymerization of liquid crystal/monomer mixtures, and it have shown potential applications in smart windows. In this work, the rigidity and flexibility of phenyl acrylate monomers were regulated by varying the number of benzene rings and the influences on the morphology and electro-optical properties of PDLC were discussed. The results showed that the PDLC films formed by monomers with one benzene ring possessed better performance. In addition, fluorination of monomers with a benzene ring could further enhance overall performance. The CR was significantly improved from 138 to 175, but the driving voltage is maintained at a lower value (6.9 V). This work provides a choice for optimizing electro-optical properties of PDLC films.

Abstract:A series of new poly(p-phenylene vinylene) derivatives with different dendritic pendants-poly{2-[3',5'-bis(2"-ethylhexyloxy)benzyloxy]-1,4-phenylenevinylene} (BE-PPV), poly {2-[3', 5'-bis(3", 7"-dimethyl)octyloxy]-1,4-phenylenevinylene} (BD-PPV), poly(2-{3',5'-bis[3",5"-bis(2"'-ethylhexyloxy)benzyloxy]benzyloxy}-1,4-phenylenevinylene) (BBE-PPV), poly(2-13',5'-bis[3",5"-bis(3"',7"'-dimethyloctyloxy)benzyloxylbenzyloxyl1,4-phenylenevinylene) (BBD-PPV), and poly[(2-[3',5'-bis[3",5"-bis(2"'-ethylhexyloxy)-benzyloxy]benzyloxy}-1,4-phenylenevinylene)-co-(2-{3',5'-bis[3",5"-bis(3"',7"'-dimethyl- octyloxy)benzyloxy]benzyloxy}-1,4-phenylenevinylene)] (BBE-co-BBD-PPV; 1:1) -were successfully synthesized according to the Gilch route. The structures and properties of the monomers and the resulting conjugated polymers were characterized with H-1 and C-13 NMR, elemental analysis, gel permeation chromatography, thermogravimetric analysis, ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy, photoluminescence, and electroluminescence spectroscopy. The obtained polymers possessed excellent solubility in common solvents and good thermal stability, with a 5% weight loss temperature of more than 328 degrees C. The weight-average molecular weights and polydispersity indices of BE-PPV, BD-PPV, BBE-PPV, BBD-PPV, and BBE-co-BBD-PPV (1:1) were in the range of 1.33-2.28 x 10(5) and 1.35-1.53, respectively. Double-layer light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with the configuration of indium tin oxide/polymer/tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum/Mg:Ag/Ag devices were fabricated, and they emitted green-yellow light. The turn-on voltages of BE-PPV, BD-PPV, BBE-PPV, BBD-PPV, and BBE-co-BBD-PPV (1:1) were approximately 5.6, 5.9, 5.5, 5.2, and 4.8 V, respectively. The LED devices of BE-PPV and BD-PPV possessed the highest electroluminescent performance; they exhibited maximum luminance with about 860 cd/m(2) at 12.8 V and 651 ed/m(2) at 13 V, respectively. Abstract:The poly(2-methoxyl-5-octyloxy) phenylene vinylene (MO-PPV) with π conjugate structure is synthesized by dehydrochlorination reaction and the optical band gap of MO-PPV is 2.12 eV by testing. Meanwhile, The third-order nonlinear optical properties is studied by using the Z-scan method with nanosecond laser pulses at a wavelength of 532 nm and the nonlinear coefficient is obtained as 2.6×10 -9 esu. The result reveals that the nonlinear optical property of MO-PPV with conjugate structure is good.

Abstract:The electrically and magnetically controllable random laser from dye-doped liquid crystals (LCs) was studied. The rubbing-alignment of the polyimide in the LC cell influenced the threshold voltage and the response time of the electrically controllable random laser. When the applied electric field was increased, the response time of the random laser decreased. Abstract:By means of chemical modification, flexible branched alkoxy chains were successfully attached to the para-site of the side phenyl groups of DP-PPV to obtain a new soluble fully conjugated PPV, named poly(2,3-di-[p-(2′-ethylhexoxy)phenyl]-1,4-phenylenevinylene). Spectroscopic characterizations using UV, photoluminescence (PL) and photoluminescent excitation (PLE) showed only the emission of single chromophore of this polymer in the solution state, indicating that the solubility of poly(2,3-diphenyl-1,4-phenylene vinylene) (DP-PPV) was significantly improved by attaching the alkoxy side chains. In the spin-coated film, the emission of the single chromophore with longer conjugating length was observed. In addition, the spectral feature showed the absence of the emission from the aggregate, which was usually observed in the alkoxy-modified PPV, revealing that the polymer chains were well-separated by the side chains. The performance of the single-layer ITO/PEDOT/p-EHDP-PPV/Ca/Al LED device was also reported. The maximum luminescence and efficiency at 11V was 3735Cd/m2 and 0.57Cd/A, respectively.

Abstract:Organic solid-state tri-wavelength lasing was demonstrated from dye-doped holographic polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (HPDLC) distributed feedback (DFB) laser with semiconducting polymer poly[-methoxy-5-(2'-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene-vinylene] (MEH-PPV) and laser dye [4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-(p-dimethylaminostyryl)-4H-pyran] (DCM) by a one-step holography technique, which centered at 605.5 nm, 611.9 nm, and 671.1 nm. The temperature-dependence tuning range for the tri-wavelength dye-doped HPDLC DFB laser was as high as 8 nm. The lasing emission from the 9th order HPDLC DFB laser with MEH-PPV as active medium was also investigated, which showed excellent s-polarization characterization. The diffraction order is 9th and 8th for the dual-wavelength lasing with DCM as the active medium. The results of this work provide a method for constructing the compact and cost-effective all solid-state smart laser systems, which may find application in scientific and applied research where multi-wavelength radiation is required.
