Abstract:Global economic development has the potential to improve the livelihoods of hundreds of millions of people in poverty around the world. It also has the potential to erode healthy ecosystems and ecosystem services—freshwater, a stable climate, richness of biodiversity, and food resources—upon which all life ultimately depends. China is now facing the challenge of balancing conservation and development to achieve sustainability of human populations and biodiversity. China is among the countries with the richest biodiversity and hosts more than 30,000 species of higher plants and 6,400 species of vertebrates. However, explosive population growth, an extensive history of agriculture, and accelerated industrial development have encroached on and destroyed many of China's grasslands, wetlands, and sensitive coastal zones. The country's booming economic development—urbanization, mining, logging, and other infrastructure building—has led to the deforestation of mountains, causing erosion, reduced water storage capability, serve sandstorms, and a hazy atmosphere, as well as species and habitat loss. To balance the conflicts between conservation and development, China has taken serious measures to protect its biodiversity in the past decades by establishing over 2600 nature reserves, implementing a national logging ban and old-growth forest protection, developing endangered species conservation action plans and ecological conservation redlines country wide (i.e., conservation-based zoning), and investing US$100 billion in ecological compensation (e.g., payments for ecosystem services). The articles in this special section span a range of topics from a world-renowned flagship species to local people's involvement in conservation. Wei et al. (2015) tell the success story of how the results of biological studies and landscape modeling provided information to the Chinese government that led to the creation of 67 protected areas to secure core habitat areas and corridors for giant pandas. Most of China's primate species are threatened with extinction. Liu et al. (2015) used data from studies of 5 endangered primates in China to inform conservation strategies. Their results suggest that genetic diversity of subpopulations is key to the preservation of these species. Culture and religion are valuable tools for conservation in community-based participatory projects. Shen et al. (2015) report that the Tibetan sacred mountains positively contribute to conserving forest at the landscape sale in Ganzi Prefecture of Sichuan Province on the eastern edge of Tibetan Plateau. Chen et al. (2015) also found that the involvement of local people in conservation is necessary for the success of species conservation projects. Three articles address plant conservation directly, particularly in the biodiversity hotspot of southwestern China. Results of a study of seed plant phylogenetic diversity and species richness in Dulong Valley (Li et al. 2015) suggest that a community's phylogenetic structure may serve as a useful measure of phylogenetic diversity in the context of conservation planning. Liu et al. (2015 “Orchid Conservation…”) developed in and ex situ conservation strategies, including new protected areas and seed banking, for threatened orchid species in Xishuangbanna. In response to large-scale habitat destruction due to, for example, hydropower dams, up to 87 endemic species and 101 threatened species on the Chinese Species Red List of Flora have been translocated. Liu et al. (2015 “Translocation of Threatened Plants…”) report on these translocations. The articles in this special section do not cover all topics of conservation science study in China, but they provide a window through which readers can glimpse the threats to and opportunities for conservation in this country.
