Abstract:On 12 May, a great earthquake (Ms=8.0) on the Longmenshan thrust fault rumbled through Chinas Sichuan province, killing more than 69,000 people and injuring 374,000. The Longmenshan thrust is part of the eastern border of the Tibetan Plateau, but it is not the plateaus only restless margin. An even larger earthquake (Ms=8.1) on the Kunlun fault shook northeastern Tibet in 2001, fortunately in a sparsely populated area. These massive quakes underscore the importance of understanding the tectonic response of Asia to collision by India. The International Deep Profiling of Tibet and the Himalaya (INDEPTH) program explores the dynamics of the India‐Asia collision. Though many past geophysical studies have focused on the Himalayas and the southern Tibetan Plateau, the INDEPTH IV project examines the deep structure of the northeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau.
Depth Varying Rupture Properties During the 2015 Mw 7.8 Gorkha (nepal) Earthquake

Abstract:On April 25th 2015, the Mw 7.8 Gorkha (Nepal) earthquake ruptured a portion of the Main Himalayan Thrust underlying Kathmandu and surrounding regions. We develop kinematic slip models of the Gorkha earthquake using both a regularized multi-time-window (MTW) approach and an unsmoothed Bayesian formulation, constrained by static and high rate GPS observations, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) offset images, interferometric SAR (InSAR), and teleseismic body wave records. These models indicate that Kathmandu is located near the updip limit of fault slip and approximately 20km south of the centroid of fault slip. Fault slip propagated unilaterally along-strike in an ESE direction for approximately 140km with a 60km cross-strike extent. The deeper portions of the fault are characterized by a larger ratio of high frequency (0.03–0.2Hz) to low frequency slip than the shallower portions. From both the MTW and Bayesian results, we can resolve depth variations in slip characteristics, with higher slip roughness, higher rupture velocity, longer rise time and higher complexity of subfault source time functions in the deeper extents of the rupture. The depth varying nature of rupture characteristics suggests that the up-dip portions are characterized by relatively continuous rupture, while the down-dip portions may be better characterized by a cascaded rupture. The rupture behavior and the tectonic setting indicate that the earthquake may have ruptured both fully seismically locked and a deeper transitional portions of the collision interface, analogous to what has been seen in major subduction zone earthquakes.
Frequency-Dependent Rupture Process, Stress Change, and Seismogenic Mechanism of the 25 April 2015 Nepal Gorkha M-W 7.8 Earthquake

Abstract:On 25 April 2015, an M w 7.8 earthquake occurred on the Main Himalaya Thrust fault with a dip angle of ~ 7° about 77 km northwest of Kathmandu, Nepal. This Nepal Gorkha event is the largest one on the Himalayan thrust belt since 1950. Here we use the compressive sensing method in the frequency domain to track the seismic radiation and rupture process of this event using teleseismic P waves recorded by array stations in North America. We also compute the distribution of static shear stress changes on the fault plane from a coseismic slip model. Our results indicate a dominant east-southeastward unilateral rupture process from the epicenter with an average rupture speed of ~3 km s ‒1 . Coseismic radiation of this earthquake shows clear frequency-dependent features. The lower frequency (0.05–0.3 Hz) radiation mainly originates from large coseismic slip regions with negative coseismic shear stress changes. In comparison, higher frequency (0.3–0.6 Hz) radiation appears to be from the down-dip part around the margin of large slip areas, which has been loaded and presents positive coseismic shear stress changes. We propose an asperity model to interpret this Nepal earthquake sequence and compare the frequency-dependent coseismic radiation with that in subduction zones. Such frequency-dependent radiation indicates the depth-varying frictional properties on the plate interface of the Nepal section in the main Himalaya thrust system, similar to previous findings in oceanic subduction zones. Our findings provide further evidence of the spatial correlation between changes of static stress status on the fault plane and the observed frequency-dependent coseismic radiation during large earthquakes. Our results show that the frequency-dependent coseismic radiation is not only found for megathrust earthquakes in the oceanic subduction environment, but also holds true for thrust events in the continental collision zone.

Abstract:The deformation mode of the Tibetan Plateau is of crucial importance for understanding its construction and extrusion processes, as well as for the assessment of regional earthquake potential. Block motion and viscous flow models have been proposed to describe the deformation field but are not fully supported by modern geophysical observations. The 2021 Mw 7.4 Maduo earthquake, which occurred inside the SongpanGanzi terrane (SGT) in central-east Tibet, provides a chance to evaluate the associated deformation mode of the region. We conduct a joint inversion for this earthquake and resolve a bilateral rupture process, which is characterized by super- and subshear rupture velocities, respectively. We interpret this distinct rupture behavior to be the result of the respective slip concentration depths of the two ruptured segments. We analyze geological, seismic, and geodetic evidence and find that the SGT upper crust shows distributed shear deformation and distinct transverse anisotropy, which are associated with folded structures originating from compression of the paleo-Tethys ocean accretional prism realigned by following shear deformation. The SGT receives lateral shear loading from its NS boundary and accommodates a right-step sinistral motion across the terrane boundary faults. The unique tectonic setting of the SGT defines locations and behaviors of internal faulting and strong earthquakes such as the 2021 Maduo earthquake, with the latter occurring on slow-moving faults at intervals of several thousands of years.

Abstract:The destructive 2015 M w 7.8 Gorkha earthquake occurred in the Main Himalayan Thrust due to the collision of the Indian and Asian plates, which provides a unique opportunity to understand the deep dynamic processes and seismogenic mechanisms of strong earthquakes. We construct a regional-scale shear-wave velocity model of the crust and uppermost mantle using ambient seismic noise and teleseismic surface wave at periods of 5–100 s around the Gorkha earthquake region. The new shear-wave velocity model exhibits prominently lateral heterogeneities in the Gorkha earthquake areas. We observe a high-velocity (high-V) zone around the Gorkha main shock in the Main Himalayan Thrust, indicating the existence of a high-strength asperity that sustains the stress accumulating. The aftershocks are primarily located in the low-velocity (low-V) anomalies and enclosed by two high-V anomalies, which appear to act as structural barriers that influence the spread of the aftershocks. Prominent low-Vanomalies from the lower crust to the mantle lithosphere are observed along the north–south trending rifts, suggesting the hot materials upwelling due to the tearing of the northward subducting Indian lithosphere. These observations may indicate that seismic velocity heterogeneity could play an essential role in earthquake initiation and the rupture process.

Abstract:The 2015 Mw7.8 Gorkha earthquake is the latest strong event with magnitude greater than Mw7.5 in the Himalayas. The occurrence of this event provides a good opportunity to better understand the characteristics of ground motion produced by a low dip thrust fault. In this study, we constructed a kinematic source model and established a numerical model that incorporates realistic surface topography, velocity structure and the Kathmandu basin for the Gorkha event. Based on the source and structure models, ground motions in the periods of 2–20 s were simulated by a spectral element method. Our results are as follow. (1) Ground motions show prominent directivity along strike. (2) The basin effect can amplify the amplitude of ground motion in Kathmandu especially on the horizontal component. (3) Horizontal ground motions in Kathmandu valley exhibit obvious amplification in the frequency range of 0.2–0.4 Hz, which is absent in vertical component. The results of this work are of importance for future studies on assessing seismic hazard in the Himalayas.

Abstract:The M 7.8 2015 April 25 Gorkha earthquake devastated the mountainous southern rim of the High Himalayan range in central Nepal. The main shock was followed by 553 earthquakes of local magnitude greater than 4.0 within the first 45 days. In this study, we present and qualify the bulletin of the permanent National Seismological Centre network to determine the spatio-temporal distribution of the aftershocks. The Gorkha sequence defines a ∼140-km-long ESE trending structure, parallel to the mountain range, abutting on the presumed extension of the rupture plane of the 1934 M 8.4 earthquake. In addition, we observe a second seismicity belt located southward, under the Kathmandu basin and in the northern part of the Mahabarat range. Many aftershocks of the Gorkha earthquake sequence have been felt by the 3 millions inhabitants of the Kathmandu valley.

Abstract:After the 2015 Mw7.8 Gorkha earthquake, geodetic measurements have been extensively used to constrain slip kinematics, fault geometry of the Main Himalayan Thrust (MHT) and earthquake cycle deformation. However, the spatially dense coseismic 3-D displacements remain largely unresolved, owing to the side-looking geometry of SAR images and sparse GPS observations. We improved 3-D displacements by incorporating a strain model in a Bayesian framework, utilizing all available coseismic interferograms and azimuth offsets from Sentinel-1 and ALOS-2 satellites. The coseismic strain map shows that major landslides in large slope areas are spatially consistent with extensional strain. The vertical component illustrates a spatial pattern different from interseismic and postseismic uplift, hinting at diverse contributions from various tectonic uplift processes in the frontal mountain belt. The spatial relationship between the interseismic strain and coseismic deformation suggests a partial release of the accumulated strain, implying a remaining notable seismic hazard around Gorkha.

Abstract:On April 25, 2015, a major earthquake of moment magnitude Mw 7.8 struck the Gorkha District of Nepal at 11:56a.m. local time (6:11a.m. UTC). One major aftershock of Mw 7.3 on May 12, 2015, contributed to the devastation of many villages in mountainous areas nearby the epicenter. The spatial distribution of aftershocks, which extended 150km to the east of the epicenter, suggests that the rupture propagated from west to east, thus producing severe destruction in Kathmandu, at approximately 80km southeast of the epicenter. A total of 800,000 buildings were severely damaged or collapsed. A post-earthquake reconnaissance showed that damages in reinforced concrete buildings in urban areas were mostly due to poor construction quality, low concrete strength, non-seismic detailing in beam–column joints, and local site effects. Most of the masonry buildings in the villages nearby main shock epicenter were also affected. This paper presents the recorded accelerograms, acceleration response spectra, and the seismological aspects of the earthquake. Case histories of damaged buildings, the patterns, and the failure mechanisms are discussed in this paper. It is concluded that a majority of the damaged buildings were not designed or constructed properly in accordance with national building codes of Nepal or ACI codes.

Abstract:The April 25, 2015 M(w)7.8 Nepal earthquake, with focal mechanism of low-angle thrust, occurred in the southern margin of Qinghai-Tibatan Plateau. Through collecting research data of active structures, satellite image interpretation and field work, three major thrust faults are determined in the seismic region. They are Himalaya Main Central Thrust (MCT), Main Boundary Thrust (MBT) and Main Frontal Thrust (MFT) from north to south respectively. The first one is inactive in the late Quaternary while the latter two are both late Pleistocene active faults. Earthquake surface rupture zone cannot be found in the M(w)7.8 earthquake. The structural feature of the southern margin of Himalaya is thin-skinned structure, with tectonic style of shallow steep ramp-deep low angle flat (about 7 degrees)-deep ramp (about 11 degrees). The deep ramp-flat is also called Main Himalaya Thrust (MHT), where the deep ramp is seismogenic structure of the main shock (M(w)7.8) and the maximum aftershock (M(w)7.3). Aftershocks are banded distribution along the high Himalayan range front with northwestern direction, mainly in the range of low Himalaya mountainous area. It can be found from the profile that aftershocks almost spread in the nappe of the hanging wall of MHT. We make the assumption that when the fault ruptured during the M(w)7.8 earthquake, seismic displacement propagated along deep ramp-flat from north to south resulting in the shortening deformation of the fold belt in the hanging wall, which further triggering secondary ruptures and much more aftershocks.
Influence of different factors on coseismic deformation of the 2015 Mw7.8 earthquake in Nepal

Abstract:In Geophysics, topographic factors are observations that can be directly measured, but they are often ignored to simplify the model. Studying the coseismic deformation caused by earthquakes helps accurately determine the epicenter's parameterization. It provides a reference for the reasonable layout of coseismic observation stations and GNSS observation stations. After the Mw7.8 earthquake in Nepal in 2015, GCMT, USGS, GFZ, CPPT, and other institutions released their epicenter parameter. However, according to their parameters, the coseismic displacements simulated by the spectral-element method are quite different from the GNSS observations. Firstly, this paper inverts the geometric parameters of the seismogenic fault with Nepal's coseismic GNSS displacement. The spectral-element method determines the source's location and depth under the heterogeneous terrain and outputs the source parameters. Among the results of many studies, the surface source is more consistent with the generation mechanism of large earthquakes. Secondly, this paper calculates the fault slip distribution of this earthquake using SDM (Steepest Descent Method) based on GNSS and InSAR data, which is divided into 1500 subfaults, and the moment tensor of each subfault is calculated. This paper investigates the distribution characteristics of the coseismic deformation field of the 2015 Mw 7.8 earthquake in Nepal under three different models. The results show that the influence of topographic factors is ~ 20%, and the influence of heterogeneous factors is ~ 10%. This paper concludes that the influence of topographic factors is much more significant than that of heterogeneous factors, and the influence of both should be addressed in coseismic deformation calculations.

Abstract:A rapid, robust multiarray backprojection method was applied to image the rupture pattern of the 2015 Gorkha, Nepal M(w)7.8 main shock and its M(w)7.3 aftershock. Backprojected teleseismic P wave trains from three regional seismic arrays in Europe, Australia, and Alaska show that both earthquakes ruptured unilaterally and primarily eastward, with rupture speeds potentially decreasing with depth. The rupture of the main shock first extended ESEward at similar to 3.5 km/s over similar to 120 km, with later rupture propagation further downdip on the eastern segment at similar to 2.1 km/s. The aftershock ruptured the fault SE of the main shock's ruptured plane. It began to rupture updipward for similar to 20 km at a speed around 1.2 km/s, then it may have accelerated to 3.5 km/s for the next 50 km. The apparent depth-dependent rupture speeds of the two earthquakes may be caused by along-dip heterogeneities in fault strength, with a higher stress concentration on the updip part of the Nepalese Main Himalayan Thrust.
Geometry-dependent Rupture Process of the 2015 Gorkha, Nepal, Earthquake Determined Using a Dip-Varying Inversion Approach with Teleseismic, High-Rate GPS, Static GPS and InSAR Data

Abstract:SUMMARYFault geometry is widely recognized as one of the most important factors that affect the rupture process and damages of earthquakes. However, there have been few earthquake cases in which the close relation between the fault geometry and rupture process is resolved from inversions of seismic and geodetic observations. In this study, we develop an approach to simultaneously estimate the rupture process and dip-angle variation on the fault. The effectiveness of our new approach was validated through inverse numerical tests. We apply the new approach to the 2015 Mw7.8 Gorkha earthquake and obtain a dip-varying rupture model by jointly inverting the teleseismic, near-fault high-rate GPS, static co-seismic GPS and InSAR data. Our results show a ramp–flat décollement-ramp fault geometry of the earthquake. The shallow ramp may have prevented the rupture from breaking through to the surface. The variation of dip angle changing with depth leads to significantly different rupture velocities and rupture lengths at shallow and deep fault portions. Particularly, the northeastern downdip ramp behaves as a geometric barrier and rapidly slows down the rupture propagation in 35–45 s after the rupture initiation. In contrast, the rupture duration and fault length in the updip portion are relatively long since there is no significant lateral dip change. Furthermore, the approach can improve our understanding of the relationship between rupture behaviour and fault geometry for other thrust low-dip-angle (dip < 45°) earthquakes.
Improving back projection imaging with a novel physics‐based aftershock calibration approach: A case study of the 2015 Gorkha earthquake

Abstract:The 2015 Mw 7.8 Nepal‐Gorkha earthquake with casualties of over 9000 people was the most devastating disaster to strike Nepal since the 1934 Nepal‐Bihar earthquake. Its rupture process was imaged by teleseismic back projections (BP) of seismograms recorded by three, large regional networks in Australia, North America, and Europe. The source images of all three arrays reveal a unilateral eastward rupture; however, the propagation directions and speeds differ significantly between the arrays. To understand the spatial uncertainties of the BP analyses, we analyze four moderate size aftershocks recorded by all three arrays exactly as had been conducted for the main shock. The apparent source locations inferred from BPs are systematically biased from the catalog locations, as a result of a slowness error caused by three‐dimensional Earth structures. We introduce a physics‐based slowness correction that successfully mitigates the source location discrepancies among the arrays. Our calibrated BPs are found to be mutually consistent and reveal a unilateral rupture propagating eastward at a speed of 2.7 km/s, localized in a relatively narrow and deep swath along the downdip edge of the locked Himalayan thrust zone. We find that the 2015 Gorkha earthquake was a localized rupture that failed to break the entire Himalayan décollement to the surface, which can be regarded as an intermediate event during the interseismic period of larger Himalayan ruptures that break the whole seismogenic zone width. Thus, our physics‐based slowness correction is an important technical improvement of BP, mitigating spatial uncertainties and improving the robustness of single and multiarray studies.

Abstract:Located in the front margin of the northeastern Tibetan Plateau,the Longshoushan fault zone is one of the boundary faults between the Hexi corridor and the Alxa block.Although the resolution of observation is limited,the 1954 M71/4 earthquake on the Longshoushan fault zone is a rare big event in this zone with modern seismological observation and documentation.During this earthquake,one continuous dextral-normal rupture occurred with a length of only 7 km along a transfer fault connecting two secondary faults of the Longshoushan fault zone.However,the dextral-normal sense of this surface rupture is contrary to the tectonic kinematics in this area.Based on recent field investigation and mapping,two phenomena were discovered.Firstly,except the one appeared on the transform fault,no surface rupture zone is found on the branches of the Longshoushn fault zone.Secondly,the main damage caused by earthquake is distributed on the region between the northern and the southern branches of the Longshoushan fault zone.These two findings indicate that the 1954 earthquake was caused by the main faults rather than the transfer fault of the Longshoushan fault zone,and the co-seismic surface rupture on the transfer fault is only a form of stress release at local portion.According to calculation of static co-seismic Coulomb stress change,the surface rupture could be triggered by an earthquake on the southern branch of the Longshoushan fault zone.Furthermore,in consideration of the possibility of dynamic triggering along the northern branch of the Longshoushan fault zone,the surface rupture should be the co-seismic response to the earthquake occurred on the main branches of the Longshoushan fault zone.Relocation of the small earthquakes also shows that a narrow inverted north-extending triangle about 10 km wide was formed between the northern and the southern faults of the Longshoushan fault zone.

Abstract:We model interseismic plate coupling distribution on the Main Himalayan Thrust (MHT) in Nepal through the inversion of secular GNSS velocity data. To complement previously published data, we compile velocity data from ten additional continuous stations to improve spatial resolution in central and mid-western Nepal. A regional non-planar structural model is adopted to reproduce the MHT fault plane. In general, the coupling pattern seems nearly binary, indicating that transition from full coupling to decoupling is occurring sharply in very narrow zones. In eastern Nepal (> 84.5oE), plate coupling is very strong from the surface to intermediate depths, including the source region of the 2015 Mw 7.8 Gorkha earthquake. Geodetically estimated slip deficit rates are consistent with the rupture history of great earthquakes in the east revealed by geomorphological observations. In the west (< 83.0oE), a weakly coupled zone extends laterally at intermediate depths, whereas the coupling in the shallower part remains very strong. Although the slip deficit rate in the west is significantly smaller than that in the east, seismic moment accumulated, since the last complete rupture in 1505 may be capable of generating a future great event. In central Nepal, estimated slip deficit rates are comparable with those in the east, and no great event has been documented over the past several centuries. Thus, the seismic risk may be most urgent in central Nepal. The development of local seismicity and crustal deformation should be carefully monitored.

Abstract:High magnitude earthquakes trigger numerous landslides and their occurrences are mainly controlled by terrain parameters. We created an inventory of 15,551 landslides with a total area of 90.2 km2 triggered by the 2015 Mw 7.8 (Gorkha) and Mw 7.3 (Dolakha) earthquakes in Nepal, through interpretation of very high resolution satellite images (e.g. WorldView, Pleiades, Cartosat-1 and 2, Resourcesat-2). Our spatial analysis of landslide occurrences with ground acceleration, slope, lithology and surface defomation indicated ubiquitous control of steep slope on landslides with ground acceleration as the trigger. Spatial distribution of landslides shows increasing frequency away from the Gorkha earthquake epicentre up to 130 km towards east, dropping sharply thereafter, which is an abnormal phenomenon of coseismic landslides. Landslides are laterally concentrated in three zones which matches well with the seismic rupture evolution of Gorkha earthquake, as reported through teleseismic measurements.

Abstract:We combine measurements of ground deformation from Synthetic Aperture Radar images, high-rate Global Navigation Satellite System and tele-seismic waveforms to study the rupture kinematics of the Madoi Earthquake, which occurred in eastern Tibet on 21 May 2021 and reached a moment magnitude M-w 7.4. The data show nearly pure left-lateral motion along a 170 km long rupture and a total duration of 36 s. The earthquake initiated near the middle of the main segment and evolved in a bilateral slip pulse rupture which propagated at a sub-Rayleigh speed of 2.6-2.8 km/s. In our model, slip is concentrated at depth of less than similar to 15 km and reaches a maximum of 4.2 m. The rupture arrested similar to 10 s after branching on the extensional splay faults at both extremities. The branching onto the splay faults and the eventual arrest of the rupture is used to provide constraints on the fault frictional properties.
Significant Lateral Dip Changes May Have Limited the Scale of the 2015 Mw 7.8 Gorkha Earthquake

Abstract:The 2015 M-w 7.8 Gorkha earthquake has drawn interest due to its complex fault geometry. Both geodetic and geologic studies have focused on the dip variations. In this study we invert the coseismic geodetic data for the 2-D dip variations of the earthquake. The best fit model confirms that the dip varies with depth, and suggests that there is a significant lateral dip anomaly along strike. The depth-dependent dip variation suggests that the earthquake ruptured a ramp-flat fault. The shallow ramp may have prevented the rupture breaking through the surface. In addition, a lateral large-dip anomaly is found in the northeastern corner of the slip area, which supports the previous findings of inferred interseismic fault coupling, coseismic high-frequency radiations, and the aftershock mechanisms. This lateral dip anomaly is likely associated with local tearing within the Indian slab. It may have blocked the east-southeastward rupture propagations of the Gorkha earthquake, implying important controls on the earthquake scale and the spatial limits of ruptures.
Radon and Carbon Dioxide Emissions from the Surface Rupture Zone Produced by the 1920 Haiyuan M8.5 Earthquake in Northwest China

Abstract:A M8.5 earthquake struck the Haiyuan area in 1920 and resulted in a 240-km long surface rupture zone along the Haiyuan fault (HYF). In this study, to determine the spatial relationship between soil gases and fault activity on a regional scale, radon (Rn) and carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations in soil gas were measured in situ with a grid spacing of 5 similar to 10 km along the Haiyuan surface rupture zone (HYSRZ). Ordinary Kriging (OK) and Inverse Distance Weight (IDW) interpolation were used to investigate spatial variations in Rn and CO2 concentrations. Synchronous soil gas anomalies were identified in southern Haiyuan County and at the southern end of the HYSRZ, and were correlated with higher slip rate, larger deformation, and larger degree rupture size than other segments. Moreover, soil gas anomalies were spatially highly coupled with seismically active zones and low b value areas, suggesting that the permeability and porosity of gas emissions are enhanced by higher stress. Two seismic velocity profiles across the gas anomaly area confirmed that low-velocity bodies exist at 0 similar to 10 km below the surface, as revealed by magnetotelluric (MT) sounding results, indicating that gas emissions are associated with the migration of deep fluids. Our results provide new insight into the source of fluids in the HYSRZ and offer support for the design of a continuous geochemical measurement network in this area.
