Abstract:To assess the aquatic reactivity, toxicity, fate and transport of materials, it is essential to determine their transformations in terms composition, morphology and surface characteristics in water. In work, oxidation products of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) characterized with spherical aberration corrected scanning mission electron microscopy (Cs-STEM) integrated with selected electron diffraction (SAED) and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDS). Crystalline structures from nZVI oxidation in oxygenated are identified. The results of Cs-STEM, EDS, X-ray diffraction ( Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) prove that the main products are oxyhydroxides (FeOOH), lepidocrocite (gamma-FeOOH).

Abstract:Lepidocrocite (LP) is commonly found in natural or anthropogenic environments and oxidized alloy steel waste storage containers. Despite its importance, the end products formed and its mineral transformation pathways, including intermediate steps and underlying mechanisms under Fe( II ) (aq) catalysis still need to be clarified due to decades of dispersed research. In this work, we investigated LP's catalytic transformation with 10 mM and 0.2 mM Fe( II ) (aq) at their natural solution pH's via bulk (X-ray Diffraction/XRD, Raman and Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared/ATR-FTIR) and micro/nano-scale (semi in situ Transmission Electron Microscopy/TEM) analysis. In general, we observed that goethite (GT) and LP were the main end products. However, a series of two major distinct intermediate events that were initiated by a dissolution type of reaction along with an "induction period" (lack of dissolution) on LP occurred. Fascinatingly, two of the intermediate steps along its mineral transformation presented novel types of non-classical mechanisms of crystallization via some type of guided oriented particle attachment. Furthermore, one of these intermediate steps is biomimetic in appearance, similar to what is observed during bacterial particle attachment. However, it uses inorganic nano-wire antennas that have a sensory-like function as observed with bacterial fimbriae and/or flagellum through an electron transparent film (similar to a bio-film matrix). Finally, this work leads us to comprehend the evolution of some well documented crystal morphologies for GT commonly observed in natural and anthropogenic settings.

Abstract:Pt nanoclusters (Pt-C) on the surface of ceria-zirconia solid solutions exhibit superior low-temperature CO oxidation activity compared to Pt single atoms (Pt-1). However, the redispersion behavior of the Pt-C to Pt-1 lowers the efficiency of CO Oxidation. In this work, the stable surface hydroxyl groups were constructed by high-temperature hydrothermal aging treatment. Specifically, the Pt-1 catalyst (Pt/CZOe-SA) prepared by atom trapping was subjected to high-temperature hydrothermal treatment to obtain the stable Pt-C catalyst (Pt/CZOe-HT) with in-situ formed Pt-C. The experimental results showed that Pt-C with 2-3 nm size could achieve excellent low-temperature activity and thermal stability. In addition, the ab initio molecular dynamics and density functional theory calculations revealed the specific evolution process of dynamic dispersion for Pt-C with or without hydroxyl groups from the femtosecond scale, suggesting that the hydroxyl groups limited the dispersion of Pt-C in the form of "energy fence". The hydrothermal treatment not only introduced high-temperature stable hydroxyl groups to improve the stability of the in-situ formed Pt-C, but also optimized the ratio of Pt-1 and Pt-C, and then enhanced the low-temperature activity by the synergistic effect between Pt-1 and Pt-C. The present work can provide theoretical guidance for developing high-performance and high-stability Pt-based catalysts.
Transformation of Sulfidized Nanoscale Zero-Valent Iron Particles and Its Effects on Microbial Communities in Soil Ecosystems.

Abstract:Sulfidized nanoscale zero-valent iron (S-nZVI) is a promising material for in situ soil remediation. However, its transformation (i.e., aging) and effects on the microbial community in soil ecosystems are largely unknown. In this study, S-nZVI having low (S-nZVI (L)) and high sulfur-doping (S-nZVI (H)) were incubated in soil microcosms and bare nZVI was used as a control. Their aged products were characterized using microspectroscopic analyses and the changes in the corresponding soil microbial community were determined using high-throughput sequencing analyses. The results indicate that severe corrosion of both bare and S-nZVI occurred over 56 days of aging with significant morphological and mineral changes. Magnetite, lepidocrocite, and goethite were detected as the main aged products. In addition, sulfate ions, pyrite, and iron polysulfide were formed in the aged products of S-nZVI. Cr(VI) removal test results indicated that S-nZVI(L) achieved the best results after aging, likely because of the optimal FeS arrangement on its nanoparticle surfaces. The presence of nZVI and S-nZVI increased the abundance of some magnetotactic microorganisms and altered bacterial and fungal community structures and compositions. Moreover, the addition of S-nZVI enriched some bacterial and fungal genera related to sulfur cycling because of the presence of sulfide-bearing material. The findings reveal the transformation of S-nZVI during aging and its effects on microbial communities in soil ecosystems, thereby helping to the evaluation of S-nZVI application in soil remediation.

Abstract:Transition-metal oxides constitute an important family of high-capacity anodes for Li-ion batteries. ZnO is a model material due to the high theoretical capacity and its representative reaction mechanism upon lithiation. We investigate the structural evolution, mechanical degradation, and stress-regulated electrochemical reactions of ZnO nanowires during the first lithiation through coordinated in-situ transmission electron microcopy experiments, continuum theories, and first-principles computation. Lithiation induces a field of stress in ZnO nanowires. The stress field mediates the electrochemical reaction and breaks the planar solid-state reaction front into a curved interface. The tensile stress in the lithiated shell causes surface fracture in the basal plane of nanowires. The compressive stress in the unlithiated core retards local reactions and results in an uneven lithiation on a given basal plane. We also observe that metallic Zn nanoparticles aggregate in the amorphous matrix of the reaction products. At a critical size, Zn nanoparticles impede the propagation of the reaction front due to the thermodynamically unfavorable lithiation reaction. The results provide fundamental perspectives on the chemomechanical behaviors of oxides for the next-generation Li-ion batteries. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:As a typical intermediate product of metastable iron oxide phase transformation, lepidocrocite is a critical player in migrating and transforming heavy metals (HMs) in soils and sediments. However, the repartitioning behavior of its associated HMs during the aging of lepidocrocite is not fully understood. We investigated the phase transformation of Cr(VI)-lepidocrocite with different exposed facets at various aging conditions (pH: 7 and 10; temperature: 25 °C and 75 °C). The results indicated that the phase transformation of lepidocrocite is facet-dependent. The rod-like lepidocrocite (R-LEP), characterized by a high ratio of (001)/(010) facets, demonstrated significant structural stability, with only minimal transformation to goethite observed over 9 days. In contrast, the dominant (010) facet in plate-like lepidocrocite (P-LEP) directly underwent the phase transformation from lepidocrocite to hematite. Meanwhile, the coordination of Cr(VI) onto the facets of lepidocrocite notably strengthened the resistance to its phase transformation. Specifically, the interaction between Cr(VI) and the (001) facets was particularly effective in inhibiting the phase transformation of lepidocrocite. In addition, the release behavior of Cr(VI) also showed lepidocrocite facet dependence. For instance, at pH = 7 and 75 °C, the release percentage of Cr(VI) on P-LEP reached up to 81 %, 1.7 times that of the release on R-LEP (46.7 %). Moreover, more non-extractable Cr speciation in P-LEP transformed into aqueous speciation and was partially redistributed on hematite. These findings provide novel insights into the role that the mineral exposed facets play in regulating the environmental behavior of Cr during the iron oxide phase transformation.
A Facile Approach for the Synthesis of Stable Amorphous Nanoscale Zero-Valent Iron Particles

Abstract:Conventional methods for the preparation and stabilization of amorphous nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI) particles are complicated and costly. In this study, a facile and economic approach for synthesizing stable NZVI without the requirement of vacuum condition was explored. NZVI particles were simultaneously prepared and stabilized in non-deoxygenated aqueous solutions. Scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive xray microanalysis (EDX), and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results showed that the as-prepared Fe0 were uniform spherical particles with a diameter ranging from 50 nm to 100 nm and a ∼5 nm thick oxide shell. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns indicated that the main component of the particles was amorphous Fe0. As confirmed via EDX and XRD analyses, the Fe0 content in the stabilized NZVI particles was hardly changed after six months of storage in dry atmosphere.

Preparation of Nanometer Γ-Fe2o3 by Electrochemical Oxidation in Non-Aqueous Medium

Abstract:The preparation of nanometer γ-Fe 2 O 3 through an electrochemical process was studied at room temperature, using a metal iron plate as sacrificing anode and a sheet of stainless steel as cathode, in non-aqueous mediate containing (Bu) 4 NBr as support electrolyte and 2% (vol% ) water. The powdery particles obtained were then calcined at 300 °C. The products were characterized by IR, XRD, SEM, TEM and laser particle size analyser, indicating the fine particle is a pure nanometer γ-Fe 2 O 3 . The morphology is like cone-shaped and their average size is 22.0 nm. Furthermore the VSM spectrum shows that the particle’s coercivity (3.9×10 3 A/m) is rather small, presenting the excellent super-paramagnetism.
Phase Evolution of the Surface Iron (hydr)oxides to the Iron Sulfide Through Anion Exchange During Sulfidation of Zero Valent Iron

Abstract:The naturally-formed iron (hydr)oxides on the surface of zero valent iron (ZVI) have long been considered as passivation layer and inert phases which significantly reduce the reaction activities when they are employed in environmental remediation. Although it seems there are no direct benefits to keep these passivation layers, here, we show that such phases are necessary intermediates for the transformation to iron sulfides through an anion exchange pathway during sulfidation of ZVI. The pre-formed (hydr)oxides undergo a phase evolution upon aging and specific phases can be effectively trapped, which can be confirmed by a combination of different characterization techniques including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. Interestingly, after sulfidation, the resultant samples originated from different (hydr)oxides demonstrate different activities in the Cr(VI) sequestration. The XANES investigation of Fe K edge and Fe L2,3 edge indicates Fe remains the same after sulfidation, suggesting a non-redox, anion exchange reaction pathway for the production of iron sulfides, where O2- anions are directly replaced with S2-. Consequently, the structural characteristics of the parent (hydr)oxides are inherited by the as-formed iron sulfides, which make them behave differently because of their different structural natures.

Abstract:Nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) and modified nZVI have shown great removal capacities towards various heavy metals. However, the aging process of nZVI during the reaction is crucial for the long-term affinity and stability of heavy metals in the environment. In this study, the aging and iron oxide evolution of amorphous nZVI (A-nZVI) and nZVI during the reaction with Sb( III ) were investigated and compared. The results indicated that after reacting with Sb( III ), iron oxides in A-nZVI were mainly composed of γ-Fe 2 O 3 (33.9%) and γ-FeOOH (29.8%), whereas α-Fe 2 O 3 (24.9%) and α-FeOOH (31.8%) were dominant in the aged nZVI. The removal capacities for Sb( III ) of γ-Fe 2 O 3 (69.8 mg g −1 ) and γ-FeOOH (42.3 mg g −1 ) were both much higher than those of α-Fe 2 O 3 (4.3 mg g −1 ) and α-FeOOH (8.4 mg g −1 ). Sb( III ) was partially oxidized during the reaction, and DFT calculation showed that the adsorption energies of both Sb( III ) and Sb( V ) on γ-Fe 2 O 3 and γ-FeOOH were higher than those on α-Fe 2 O 3 and α-FeOOH. Furthermore, EXAFS analysis revealed that Sb formed an inner-sphere complex with the iron oxides in A-nZVI through the bidentate mononuclear edge-sharing structure (2E). Therefore, A-nZVI showed higher affinity and long-term stability toward Sb( III ) remediation.

Abstract:Atom probe tomography (APT) analysis of chemically pure nanofilms of zero-valent iron (Fe(0), or ZVI) and their thermal oxide nano-overlayers reveals the presence of dendritic iron oxide features that extend from the oxide nano-overlayer surface into the ZVI bulk. The dendrites are observed by APT to be in the 5 nm x 10 nm size range and form quickly under natural atmospheric conditions. Their growth into the ZVI lalyer is, within the limit of our three-month long study, self-limiting (i.e. their initial growth appears to quickly discontinue). The atomistic views presented here shed first light on the atmospheric corrosion process of Fe(0)-bearing engineered nanostructures and their surfaces in the limit of low bulk impurities. Possible roles of the newly identified oxidized iron dendrites are also discussed in the context of passivation processes limiting technological applications of Fe(0).
Long-term transformation of nanoscale zero-valent iron explains its biological effects in anaerobic digestion: From ferroptosis-like death to magnetite-enhanced direct electron transfer networks

Abstract:Nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) has been extensively used for environmental remediation and wastewater treatment. However, the biological effects of nZVI remain unclear, which is no doubt a result of the complexity of iron species and the dynamic succession of microbial community during nZVI aging. Here, the aging effects of nZVI on methanogenesis in anaerobic digestion (AD) were consecutively investigated, with an emphasis on deciphering the causal relationships between nZVI aging process and its biological effects. The addition of nZVI in AD led to ferroptosis-like death with hallmarks of iron-dependent lipid peroxidation and glutathione (GSH) depletion, which inhibited CH 4 production during the first 12 days of exposure. With prolonged exposure time, a gradual recovery (12-21 days) and even better performance (21-27 days) in AD were observed. The recovery performance of AD was mainly attributed to nZVI-enhanced membrane rigidity via forming siderite and vivianite on the outer surface of cells, protecting anaerobes against nZVI-induced toxicity. At the end of 27-days exposure, the significantly increased amount of conductive magnetite simulated direct interspecies electron transfer among syntrophic partners, improving CH 4 production. Metagenomic analysis further revealed that microbial cells gradually adapted to the aging of nZVI by upregulating functional genes related to chemotaxis, flagella, conductive pili and riboflavin biosynthesis, in which electron transfer networks likely thrived and the cooperative behaviors between consortium members were promoted. These results unveiled the significance of nZVI aging on its biological effects toward multiple microbial communities and provided fundamental insights into the long-term fates and risks of nZVI for in situ applications.

Abstract:The effects of aging of colloidal dispersions of iron (oxyhydr)oxides affect the stability of these materials under different environmental conditions, thereby affecting their reactivity and applicability in remediation. However, only a limited number of studies have focused on aging-induced changes in the phase composition, surface properties, and toxicological effects of nanoparticles (NPs). In this study, closely related and intermediate iron (oxyhydr)oxides (Fe 3- δ O 4 , γ -Fe 2 O 3 , 5Fe 2 O 3 ∙9H 2 O, δ -FeOOH) were synthesized. The crystal structure, surface charge, and leaching of Fe ions of these materials were analyzed. All synthesized materials were then tested in bioassays with ciliates and higher plants at circumneutral pH, both upon preparation and after aqueous aging. Quantitative analysis of the X-ray diffraction data using the Rietveld method showed that the crystal structure of the magnetite NPs changed to γ -Fe 2 O 3 . The evaluation of biological activity in Sinapis alba (white mustard) showed that NPs of different compositions, stored at a maximum concentration of 10 g L −1 , inhibited root growth by 50%. In the case of δ -FeOOH and Fe 3 O 4 , however, concentrations of 1 g L −1 caused only minor inhibition. The toxic effects of Fe-NPs, attributed to the release of Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ ions by oxidation, were found to be consistent with the redox behavior of NPs.

By comparing the coated specimen that was quenched from 1200 degrees C with the one that was not, we considered the root cause of the intragranular nanocavities in Cr 2 O 3 was that the nanocavities that formed in the original coating were trapped into the Cr 2 O 3 grains during the corrosion process. This explanation may also apply to the formation of intragranular nanocavities in single metal Cr-coated zirconium alloys corroded at high temperatures.

Abstract:The rational regulation of catalysts with a well-controlled morphology and crystal structure has been demonstrated effective for optimizing the electrochemical performance. Herein, corrosion engineering was employed for the straightforward preparation of FeAl layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets and Fe3O4 nanooctahedrons via the feasible modification of dealloying conditions. The FeAl-LDH nanosheets display an excellent catalytic performance for oxygen evolution reactions in 1 M KOH solution, such as low overpotentials (333 mV on glass carbon electrode and 284 mV on Ni foam at 10 mA cm−2), a small Tafel slope (36 mV dec−1), and excellent durability (24 h endurance without deactivation). The distinguished catalytic features of the FeAl-LDH nanosheets comes from the Al and Fe synergies, oxygen vacancies, and well-defined two-dimensional (2D) layered LDH structure.

Abstract:Single-atom iron electrocatalysts have emerged as up-and-coming alternatives to platinum-based catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction. However, their further development has been impeded by complex fabrication procedures and limitations in long-term stability. This study developed a chemical vapor deposition approach for synthesizing an efficient iron single-atom electrocatalyst denoted as Fe-SA@NC, utilizing vaporized ferrocene to deposit on a hierarchical N-doped carbon derived from ZIF-8. The preparation process maintained the initial pore structure throughout the deposition process by utilizing a two-step pyrolysis, preventing the collapse or deformation of the pore structure and frameworks. The optimized catalyst exhibited an exceptional half-wave potential (0.932 V) and kinetic current density (28.38 mA cm −2 at 0.9 V vs. RHE), along with high turnover frequency (36.37 s −1 ) and mass activity (5.68 A mg −1 ), and remarkable long-term stability in an alkaline electrolyte, exceeding those of commercial Pt/C and most previously reported iron-based electrocatalysts. Moreover, it also demonstrated outstanding practicability in both liquid and solid Zn–air batteries. The formation of well-dispersed Fe–N 4 with strong interaction on hierarchical N-doped carbon was verified in the correlation of the structural activity and the excellent performance of Fe-SA@NC. This work sheds some light on the facile synthesis of single-atom catalysts with effective efficiency and stability.
