Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials are of great significance to the materials community as a result of their high surface area and controllable surface properties. However, controlled preparation of biodegradable 2D structures with biological activity is difficult. In this work we demonstrate that by careful selection of building block structures and assembly conditions it is possible to use crystallization-driven self-assembly (CDSA) to assemble well-defined 2D nanostructures from poly(L-lactide) (PLLA)-based diblock glycopolymers. 1D glyco-cylinders and 2D diamond-shaped glyco-platelets are produced, where the underlying formation mechanism is revealed by dissipative particle dynamics simulations. Furthermore, we demonstrate that assembly of the polymers under mild degradation provides a straightforward route to hollow-cored platelets, a morphology that has previously proven laborious to access. The well-defined sizes and shapes of the glyco-platelets allow us to investigate macrophage activation efficiency and demonstrate clear size and shape effects, pointing toward potential applications in immunology.

Abstract:The creation of anisotropic core-shell nanoparticles using the living crystallization-driven self-assembly method results in colloidally stable solid particles. The fragmentation or degradation of crystallization-driven self-assembly nanomaterials is currently accessible only when intensive external stimuli are exerted. Controlling the stability of the crystalized core material may also allow structural evolution and fragmentation to be achieved. Here we report that two-dimensional (2D) platelets containing less stable domains specifically fragment upon ageing, providing a simple method to create hollow platelet polymer particles in one step. Mechanistic studies reveal that a high concentration of low-molecular-weight homopolymer in 2D platelet that crystallizes at low temperatures results in less stable domains, which fragment upon ageing. To illustrate the utility of spontaneous fragmentation, spatially selective fragmentation of 2D segmented platelets is used to prepare 2D hollow platelets that are usually inaccessible from a thermodynamic process. The fragmentation of crystallization-driven self-assembly nanomaterials is only achievable with external stimuli. Now we report that two-dimensional platelets containing less stable domains can spontaneously fragment upon ageing, providing a simple one-step method for creating hollow platelet polymer particles.

Abstract:Although one dimensional (1D) Pt nanostructures with well-defined sizes and shapes have fascinating physiochemical properties, their preparation remains a great challenge. Here we report an easy and novel synthesis of 1D Pt nanostructures with controllable morphologies, through the combination of designer self-assembling I 3 K and phage-displayed P7A peptides. The nanofibrils formed via I 3 K self-assembly acted as template. Pt precursors ((PtCl 4 ) 2− and (PtCl 6 ) 2− ) were immobilized by electrostatic interaction on the positively charged template surface and subsequent reduction led to the formation of 1D Pt nanostructures. P7A was applied to tune the continuity of the Pt nanostructures. Here, the electrostatic repulsion between the deprotonated C-terminal carboxyl groups of P7A molecules was demonstrated to play a key role. We finally showed that continuous and ordered 1D Pt morphology had a significantly improved electrochemical performance for the hydrogen and methanol electro-oxidation in comparison with either 1D discrete Pt nanoparticle assemblies or isolated Pt nanoparticles.

Abstract:The preparation of colloidally stable, self-assembled materials with tailorable solid or hollow two-dimensional (2D) structures represents a major challenge. We describe the formation of uniform, monodisperse rectangular platelet micelles of controlled size by means of seeded-growth methods that involve the addition of blends of crystalline-coil block copolymers and the corresponding crystalline homopolymer to cylindrical micelle seeds. Sequential addition of different blends yields solid platelet block comicelles with concentric rectangular patches with distinct coronal chemistries. These complex nano-objects can be subject to spatially selective processing that allows their disassembly to form perforated platelets, such as well-defined hollow rectangular rings. The solid and hollow 2D micelles provide a tunable platform for further functionalization and potential for a variety of applications.

Abstract:Low dispersity 2D platelet micelles with controllable surface patterns were prepared by seeded-growth/living crystallization driven self-assembly (CDSA) of block copolymer/homopolymer (BCP/HP) blends of poly(ferrocenyldimethylsilane)-b-poly(2-vinyl pyridine) (PFS-b-P2VP) and PFS. The precise morphology was found to be dependent on the proportion of the P2VP corona block, which can be efficiently controlled by changing the molar concentration ratio of PFS-b-P2VP/PFS, (cB/cH)t, as well as their relative rates of crystallization, (GB/GH)t. In the case where their molar concentration ratio was comparable to their crystallization rate ratio, platelets with a uniform distribution of P2VP coronal chains were formed. In other cases, as the concentration ratio increased (or decreased) during the living CDSA process, hierarchical structures were formed, including chain-like assemblies consisting of end-to end linked rectangular platelets and fusiform (tapered) micelles. (GB/GH)t was adjusted by tuning the degree of polymerization of the crystallizable PFS core-forming block and the BCP block ratio and by varying the terminus of the HP or changing the solvent used. Furthermore, the open edge of the platelets remained active for further growth, which permitted control of the morphology and dimensions of the platelets. Interestingly, in cases where the molar concentration ratio was lower than the crystallization rate ratio, growth rings were observed after two or more living CDSA steps. This study on the formation of platelet micelles by living CDSA of BCP/HP blends under kinetic control offers a considerable scope for the design of 2D polymer nanomaterials with controlled shape and surface patterns.

Abstract:The craving for controllable assembly of geometrical nanostructures from artificial building motifs, which is routinely achieved in naturally occurring systems, has been a perpetual and outstanding challenge in the field of chemistry and materials science. In particular, the assembly of nanostructures with different geometries and controllable dimensions is crucial for their functionalities and is usually achieved with distinct assembling subunits via convoluted assembly strategies. Herein, we report that with the same building subunits of α-cyclodextrin (α-CD)/block copolymer inclusion complex (IC), geometrical nanoplatelets with hexagonal, square, and circular shapes could be produced by simply controlling the solvent conditions via one-step assembly procedure, driven by the crystallization of IC. Interestingly, these nanoplatelets with different shapes shared the same crystalline lattice and could therefore be interconverted to each other by merely tuning the solvent compositions. Moreover, the dimensions of these platelets could be decently controlled by tuning the overall concentrations.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) core–shell nanoparticles have been attracting increasing interest due to their wide applications in materials science. Living crystallization-driven self-assembly (CDSA) is an ambient temperature, seeded growth method of crystallizable block copolymers (BCPs) in selective solvents, which has been demonstrated to be a powerful tool for the creation of one-dimensional (1D)/2D nanomaterials with precise control over size and compositions. Nevertheless, the development of an efficient living CDSA approach is a challenge for the case of semicrystalline poly(p-dioxanone) (PPDO) as a core-forming block, where the dimensional control is poor. Herein, we demonstrate that the insufficient size control of 2D PPDO platelets could be overcome through modulation of solvent compositions or elevating the crystallization temperatures for PPDO. The possible mechanism involves an improved unimer solubility that avoids fast unimer aggregation. As a result, uniform 2D platelet micelles with a controlled area over a substantial size range are created via epitaxial growth of the unimer. It is noteworthy that the shape control of 2D platelet micelles from quasi-square to elongated hexagon to lozenge shapes can be accessible by regulating the crystallization conditions such as adding different amounts of cosolvents or crystallization at an elevated temperature. Meanwhile, spatially defined block comicelles can be achieved via the seeded growth approach from PPDO core-forming BCPs with different corona functionalities at elevated temperatures. The excellent water stability and biocompatibility properties of 2D PPDO platelet micelles further enable them to have a potential application as cargo vehicles in the drug delivery field.

Abstract:Utilization of the crystallization-driven self-assembly (CDSA) approach has revolutionized the production of precisely controlled core–shell nanoparticles. However, the current scope of this robust method is limited to the linear chain architecture of crystallizable block copolymers (BCPs). This limitation raises intriguing questions about the impact of diverse topological chain architectures of crystallizable polymers on the CDSA behavior. Herein, we report that the topological chain architecture of styrylpyrene (SPy) moiety-modified BCPs bearing crystallizable poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) segments can be dynamically modulated via a [2 + 2] photocycloaddition reaction between SPy groups, yielding tadpole-shaped BCPs containing cyclic PCL segments. Due to the reversible photocycloaddition reaction upon light irradiation, the morphologies as well as fluorescence functionalities of two-dimensional (2D) platelets prepared by a seeded growth approach could be dynamically, reversibly, and precisely regulated by light irradiation. These findings provide valuable insights into the light-controlled manipulation of structurally and functionally diverse, topology-controlled multicomponent 2D assemblies, paving the way for potential applications in various scientific fields.

Abstract:This paper reports the aqueous self-assembly of giant elliptical platelets over 20 μm in axial length, from a novel polyamide. Both the self-assembly pathway and mechanism were studied using morphology and X-ray characterizations. The polymer first self-organizes into small quadrangular frustum pyramid platelets, and then these small platelets can be further installed into giant elliptical platelets through an "installation art"-like hierarchical self-assembly process driven by crystallization. The as-prepared regular giant platelets can further aggregate together into multi-horned or flower-like superstructures.

Abstract:Symmetry breaking is prevalent in nature and provides distinctive access to hierarchical structures for artificial materials. However, it is rarely explored in two-dimensional (2D) entities, especially for lateral asymmetry. Herein, we describe a unique symmetry breaking process in surface-initiated 2D living crystallization-driven self-assembly. The 2D epitaxial growth occurs only at one lateral side of the immobilized cylindrical micelle seeds, accessing unilateral platelets with the yield increasing with the seed length, the growth temperature, and poly(2-vinylpyridine) corona length (maximum = 92%). Generally, the tilted immobilization of seeds blocks one lateral side and triggers the lateral symmetry breaking, where the intensity and spatial arrangement of seed-surface interactions dictate the regulation. Segmented unilateral platelets with segmented corona regions are further fabricated with the addition of different blended unimers. Remarkably, discrete slope-like and dense blade-like platelet arrays grow off the surface when seeds are compactly aligned either with spherical micelles or themselves. This strategy provides nanoscale insights into the symmetry breaking in long-range self-assembly and would be promising for the design of innovative colloids and smart surfaces.

Herein, we conduct Brownian dynamics simulations to examine the seeded-growth of rod-coil block copolymer assemblies and discover that 2D-1D (disk-cylinder) hybrid micelles can be formed via liquid-crystallization-driven self-assembly (LCDSA). 2D nanodisk micelles with smectic-like LC cores serve as seeds. After adding rod-coil block copolymers into the seed solution, the copolymers incorporate onto the 2D seed edges to generate junction points. Several cylindrical arms are formed from the elongation of junction points, resulting in 2D-1D multi-dimensional hybrid micelles. The structural transition of the micelle core from smectic-like (disk) to cholesteric-like (cylindrical arms) LC packing manners benefits from the fluidity of LC. Such a seeded-growth behavior simultaneously exhibits the features of heterogeneous nucleation and homogenous epitaxy growth. Intriguingly, the arms generate in sequence, and its junction position is in para-position first, followed by ortho-position or meta-position, resembling the difference in the substituent activities on the benzene ring. These theoretical findings are consistent with experimental results and provide explanations to some unaddressed issues in experiments. The gained results also reveal that the hybrid micelles are a good stabilizer due to their high surface area and distinctive suspension behaviors.

Anisotropic Seeded Growth of Ag Nanoplates Confined in Shape‐Deformable Spaces

Abstract:Conventional templating synthesis confines the growth of seeds in rigid spaces to achieve faithful morphological replication. Herein, we explore the use of spherical shape-deformable polymeric nanoshells to regulate the anisotropic growth of Ag nanoplates. The flexible shells deform adaptively to accommodate the initial overgrowth of the seeds but restrict the growth in the directions where the shells are fully stretched, eventually producing nanoplates with an unconventional circular profile. The diameter of the final Ag nanoplates can be precisely predicted by stretching and flattering the nanoshells into a plate-like capsule while retaining their original internal surface area. Furthermore, unlike conventional templates, the polymer shells eventually turn themselves into a conformal coating that binds to the surface of the full-grown Ag nanoplates and significantly enhances their stability against oxidative etching.

Precision control of one-/two-dimensional assemblies for Poly(hexamethylene carbonate) block copolymers

Abstract:The precision control of monodisperse nanomaterials with spatially distinct functionalities and properties is of particular interest in materials science. Creating biocompatible/biodegradable nanoparticles that can be colloidally stable in aqueous solution further paves the way to a broad range of bio-related applications. In present work, we demonstrate the precise fabrication of aliphatic polycarbonate based one-dimensional (1D) cylinders and 2D platelet micelles using living crystallization-driven self-assembly (CDSA) by seeded growth method. By synthesizing aliphatic polycarbonate core-forming block copolymers with different corona-to-core ratios, excellent control over dimensions of 1D cylinders and 2D platelets with good uniformity is achieved through effectively epitaxial growth in ethanol based on the mass ratios of unimer-to-seed. Meanwhile, segmented nanoparticles with spatially-defined chemistries can further be prepared by sequential seeded growth approach. Moreover, these 1D/2D nanostructures are colloidally stable in water, and further show excellently biocompatible property towards L929 cells. These promising properties of polycarbonate-based micelles enable to a wide application as cargo vehicles in bio-related fields.

Abstract:Anisotropy at the level of the inter-particle interaction provides the particles with specific instructions for the self-assembly of target structures. The ability to synthesize non-spherical colloids, together with the possibility of controlling the particle bonding pattern via suitably placed interaction sites, is nowadays enlarging the playfield for materials design. We consider a model of anisotropic colloidal platelets with regular rhombic shape and two attractive sites placed along adjacent edges and we run Monte Carlo simulations in two-dimensions to investigate the two-stage assembly of these units into clusters with well-defined symmetries and, subsequently, into extended lattices. Our focus is on how the site positioning and site-site attraction strength can be tuned to obtain micellar aggregates that are robust enough to successively undergo to a second-stage assembly from sparse clusters into a stable hexagonal lattice.

Abstract:One-dimensional (1D) and 2D structures by crystallization-driven self-assembly of block copolymers (BCPs) can form fascinating hierarchical structures through secondary self-assembly. But examples of 3D structures formed via hierarchical self-assembly are rare. Here we report seeded growth experiments in decane of a poly(ferrocenyldimethylsilane) BCP with an amphiphilic corona forming block in which lenticular platelets grow into classic spherulite-like uniform colloidally stable structures. These 3D objects are spherically symmetric on the exterior, but asymmetric near the core, where there is a more open structure consisting of sheaf-like leaves. The most remarkable aspect of these experiments is that growth stops at different stages of growth process, depending upon how much unimer is added in the seeded growth step. The system provides a model for studying spherulitic growth where real-time observations on their growth at different stages remains challenging.

Abstract:Uniform Co spherical assemblies were prepared via a facile hydrothermal reduction approach in the presence of surfatctants with a yield of 98%. The assembled nanostructures were composed of ordered nanoplatelets with a thickness of similar to 20 nm, as characterized by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), transmission electronic microscopy (TEM), and high-resolution TEM (HRTEM). This material exhibits ferromagnetic characteristics and has a high surface area, showing potential applications for catalysts and other related nanodevices.
