Abstract:Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) has become an accepted approach for assessing efficiency in a wide range of cases. The present paper suggests a systematic application procedure of the DEA methodology in its various stages. Attention is focused on the selection of ‘decision making units’ (DMUs) to enter the analysis as well as the choice and screening of factors. The application of several DEA models (in different versions and formulations) is demonstrated, in the process of determining relative efficiencies within the compared DMUs.

Abstract:Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a method for measuring the efficiency of peer decision making units (DMUs). An important area of development in recent years has been devoted to applications wherein DMUs represent two-stage or network processes. One particular subset of such processes is those in which all the outputs from the first stage are the only inputs to the second stage. The current paper reviews these models and establishes relations among various approaches. We show that all the existing approaches can be categorized as using either Stackelberg (leader-follower), or cooperative game concepts. Future perspectives and challenges are discussed.

Abstract:This paper proposes that data envelopment analysis (DEA) should be viewed as a method (or tool) for data-oriented analytics in performance evaluation and benchmarking. While computational algorithms have been developed to deal with large volumes of data (decision making units, inputs, and outputs) under the conventional DEA, valuable information hidden in big data that are represented by network structures should be extracted by DEA. These network structures, e.g., transportation and logistics systems, encompass a broader range of inter-linked metrics that cannot be modelled by conventional DEA. It is proposed that network DEA is related to the value dimension of big data. It is shown that network DEA is different from standard DEA, although it bears the name of DEA and some similarity with conventional DEA. Network DEA is big data enabled analytics (big DEA) when multiple (performance) metrics or attributes are linked through network structures. These network structures are too large or complex to be dealt with by conventional DEA. Unlike conventional DEA that are solved via linear programming, general network DEA corresponds to nonconvex optimization problems. This represents opportunities for developing techniques for solving non-linear network DEA models. Areas such as transportation and logistics system as well as supply chains have a great potential to use network DEA in big data modeling.

Abstract:Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a method for measuring the efficiency of peer decision making units (DMUs). This tool has been utilized by a number of authors to examine two-stage processes, where all the outputs from the first stage are the only inputs to the second stage. The current article examines and extends these models using game theory concepts. The resulting models are linear, and imply an efficiency decomposition where the overall efficiency of the two-stage process is a product of the efficiencies of the two individual stages. When there is only one intermediate measure connecting the two stages, both the noncooperative and centralized models yield the same results as applying the standard DEA model to the two stages separately. As a result, the efficiency decomposition is unique. While the noncooperative approach yields a unique efficiency decomposition under multiple intermediate measures, the centralized approach is likely to yield multiple decompositions. Models are developed to test whether the efficiency decomposition arising from the centralized approach is unique. The relations among the noncooperative, centralized, and standard DEA approaches are investigated. Two real world data sets and a randomly generated data set are used to demonstrate the models and verify our findings. (C) 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a self-evaluation method which assesses the relative efficiency of a particular decision making unit (DMU) within a group of DMUs. It has been widely applied in real-world scenarios, and traditional DEA models with a limited number of variables and linear constraints can be computed easily. However, DEA using big data involves huge numbers of DMUs, which may increase the computational load to beyond what is practical with traditional DEA methods. In this paper, we propose novel algorithms to accelerate the computation process in the big data environment. Specifically, we firstly use an algorithm to divide the large scale DMUs into small scale and identify all strongly efficient DMUs. If the strongly efficient DMU set is not too large, we can use the efficient DMUs as a sample set to evaluate the efficiency of inefficient DMUs. Otherwise, we can identify two reference points as the sample in the situation of just one input and one output. Furthermore, a variant of the algorithm is presented to handle cases with multiple inputs or multiple outputs, in which some of the strongly efficient DMUs are reselected as a reduced-size sample set to precisely measure the efficiency of inefficient DMUs. Last, we test the proposed methods on simulated data in various scenarios.

Abstract:As a result of the dot‐com collapse and the slowdown in the economy, the flood of venture capital dollars for e‐commerce has evaporated. E‐commerce companies have been enforced to review their business performance. E‐commerce efficiency has been touted to be a critical component that can assist a company in its strategies to become successful. This study proposes a model for evaluating e‐commerce efficiency using data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach. The model includes not only financial and operational measures, but also e‐commerce specific measures. An illustrative example demonstrates that the DEA model can not only effectively reflect the relative efficiency of e‐commerce firms but also identify their potential efficiency problems. Management can, therefore, take the right remedial actions.

Abstract:Abstract Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is a widely used mathematical programming approach for assessing the efficiency of decision-making units (DMUs) in various sectors. Inverse DEA is a post-DEA sensitivity analysis approach developed initially for solving resource allocation. The main objective of Inverse DEA is to determine the optimal quantity of inputs and/or outputs for each DMU under input and/or output perturbation (s) that would allow them to reach a given efficiency target. Since the early 2000s, Inverse DEA has been extended theoretically and applied successfully in different areas including banking, energy, education, sustainability, and supply chain management. In recent years, research has demonstrated the potential of Inverse DEA for solving novel inverse problems, such as estimating merger gains, minimizing production pollution, optimizing business partnerships, and more. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of the latest theoretical and practical advancements in Inverse DEA, while also highlighting potential areas for future research and development in this field. One such area is exploring the use of heuristic algorithms and optimization techniques in conjunction with Inverse DEA models to address issues of infeasibility and nonlinearity. Moreover, applying Inverse DEA to new sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, and environmental and climate change issues holds great promise for future research. Overall, this paper sets the stage for further advancements in this promising approach.

Abstract:Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a useful tool of efficiency measurement for firms and organizations. Kao and Hwang (2008) take into account the series relationship of the two sub-processes in a two-stage production process, and the overall efficiency of the whole process is the product of the efficiencies of the two sub-processes. To find the largest efficiency of one sub-process while maintaining the maximum overall efficiency of the whole process, Kao and Hwang (2008) propose a solution procedure to accomplish this purpose. Nevertheless, one needs to know the overall efficiency of the whole process before calculating the sub-process efficiency. In this note, we propose a method that is able to find the sub-process and overall efficiencies simultaneously.

Abstract:Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a well-known data-enabled analytic tool for evaluating relative efficiency of units with multiple inputs and multiple outputs. The DEA computation increases substantially in the presence of large samples. In this study, we first recall two lemmas to distinguish efficient units using arithmetic operations without solving linear programming (LP). Using the used lemmas, the total sample of units is partitioned into several sequential blocks, where units in the preceding blocks are relatively efficient to those in the subsequent blocks. A novel reference set selection procedure is then formulated. We implement the proposed approach into one of the fastest existing methods and demonstrate a significant improvement in elapsed time. We conduct simulation experiments and illustrate the outcomes across varying dimensions, cardinality, and density.

Abstract:Traditional data envelopment analysis has been applied to many areas to evaluate the relative efficiency of decision making units and it takes the internal structure of system as a “black box”. Recently, many two-stage DEA models are built to open up the “black box” of a two-stage system, where the outputs of the first stage are taken as the inputs for the second stage. By applying the two-stage DEA, more inefficiency in the system can be measured. The overall efficiency and divisional efficiencies of DMUs can be simultaneously obtained. Although some works take measures to decompose the overall efficiency into two divisional efficiencies, few works consider the competition between two stages because one stage has larger efficiency value and the other one will have smaller value. More importantly, in previous decomposition works, there are few works considering a DMU’s individual performance among its homogenous divisions. Based on the difference between two divisional performance (reference ratio), in this paper, a new model with fairness is proposed to decompose the overall efficiency and further applied to measure Chinese commercial banks’ performance from both the individual and overall perspectives.

Abstract:Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a nonparametric method for evaluating the relative efficiency of a set of decision-making units (DMUs) with multiple inputs and outputs. As an extension of the DEA, a multiplicative two-stage DEA model has been widely used to measure the efficiencies of two-stage systems, where the first stage uses inputs to produce the outputs, and the second stage then uses the first-stage outputs as inputs to generate its own outputs. The main deficiency of the multiplicative two-stage DEA model is that the decomposition of the overall efficiency may not be unique because of the presence of alternate optima. To remove the problem of the flexible decomposition, in this paper, we maximize the sum of the two-stage efficiencies and simultaneously maximize the two-stage efficiencies as secondary goals in the multiplicative two-stage DEA model to select the decomposition of the overall efficiency from the flexible decompositions, respectively. The proposed models are applied to evaluate the performance of 10 branches of China Construction Bank, and the results are compared with the results of the existing models.

Abstract:Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a powerful analytical tool in operations research and management for measuring and estimating the efficiency of decision-making units. Both the inputs and the outputs are assumed to be known constants in the classical DEA models. However, in many cases, those data (e.g., carbon emissions and social benefit) cannot be measured in a precise way. Therefore, in this article, the inputs and outputs are considered as uncertain variables and a new uncertain DEA model is introduced. The sensitivity and stability of the new model are also analyzed. Finally, a numerical example of the new model is documented.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to evaluate design performance of 51 gear shaping machines by using data envelopment analysis (DEA). Design/methodology/approach Existing studies extend traditional DEA by handling bounded and discrete data based on envelopment models. However, value judgment is usually neglected and fail to be incorporated in these envelopment models. In many cases, there is a need for prior preferences. Using existing DEA approaches as a backdrop, the current paper presents a methodology for incorporating assurance region (AR) restrictions into DEA with bounded and discrete data, i.e. the assurance region bounded discrete (AR-BD) DEA model. Then, the AR-BD DEA model is combined with a context-dependent DEA to obtain an efficiency stratification. Findings The authors examine different AR restrictions and calculate efficiency scores of five scenarios of AR restrictions by using the proposed AR-BD DEA model. It shows that AR restrictions have a great impact on the efficiency scores. The authors also identify nine efficient frontiers in total. For each decision-making unit, it could set benchmarks and improve its performance based on each higher efficient frontier. Originality/value This paper first evaluates efficiency of gear shaping machines by considering different (bounded and discrete) variable types of data and including AR restrictions. The AR-BD DEA model and context-dependent AR-BD DEA model proposed in this paper further enrich the DEA theory. The findings in this paper certainly provide useful information for both producers and consumers to make smart decisions.

Abstract:Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a frontier analysis procedure for evaluating the relative performance of decision making units (DMUs) with multiple inputs and multiple outputs. To improve its discrimination power, an important extension is proposed as cross-efficiency, which uses peer DMUs' optimal relative weights to evaluate the relative performance. However, the existing cross-efficiency methods show an inconsistent and unbalanced evaluation standard, since each DMU might determine a different total (or mean) efficiency value across all DMUs. The different values imply that the DMUs that have assigned larger cross-efficiency scores will have a larger effect in aggregating the ultimate cross-efficiency scores and different DMUs' effects are unbalanced in cross-efficiency methods. In this paper, we will deal with this unbalanced cross-efficiency evaluation problem. To this end, we first suggest a practical adjustment measure to rectify the traditional cross-efficiency, which will provide a common evaluation standard for all DMUs and make each DMU dispatch an identical total efficiency score across all DMUs. Further, we propose a game-like iterative procedure to obtain the optimal balanced cross-efficiency. Finally, we present both a numerical example and an empirical study derived from the literature and a real-world problem to demonstrate the usefulness and efficacy of the new balanced cross-efficiency evaluation approach. The work presented in this paper can extend the traditional cross-efficiency approaches to situations involving unbalanced evaluation standards, and make the evaluation results more practical significance. Abstract:Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is introduced into activity-based management (ABM) and a quantitative model is given to evaluate the efficiency of resources utilization and customer value provided by activities. A real case study of a transformer factory is used to illustrate the application of the model. DEA model can help to:(1) confirm the DEA efficiency of resources utilization of activities; (2) calculate the projection in efficient production frontier of Decision Making Unit (DMU) and provide activity improvement information; (3) determine the overall resource utilization efficiency and variable resource utilization efficiency; and (4) apply composite DEA model to evaluate the comprehensive activity efficiency influenced by non-financial indicator.

Abstract:Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a methodology for measuring best relative efficiencies of a group of peer decision-making units (DMUs) that take multiple inputs to produce multiple outputs. However, the traditional DEA model only aims to maximize the efficiency of the DMU under evaluation. This usually leads to very small weights (even zero weights) being assigned to some inputs or outputs. Correspondingly, these inputs or outputs have little or even no contribution to efficiency, which is unfair and irrational. The purpose of this paper is to address this problem. Two new weight-optimized models are proposed based upon the perspective of cross evaluation. Using the results of an Advanced Manufacturing Technology (AMT) example, it is found that all AMTs are fully sorted. The decision maker can easily choose the best AMT. In addition, unreasonable weights of AMTs are effectively avoided.

Abstract:This chapter is written for analysts and researchers who may use data envelopment analysis (DEA) to statistically evaluate hypotheses about characteristics of production correspondences and factors affecting productivity. Contrary to some characterizations, it is shown that DEA is a full-fledged statistical methodology, based on the characterization of DMU efficiency as a stochastic variable. The DEA estimator of the production frontier has desirable statistical properties, and provides a basis for the construction of a wide range of formal statistical tests (Banker RD Mgmt Sci. 1993;39(10):1265–73). Specific tests described here address issues such as comparisons of efficiency of groups of DMUs, existence of scale economies, existence of allocative inefficiency, separability and substitutability of inputs in production systems, analysis of technical change and productivity change, impact of contextual variables on productivity, and the adequacy of parametric functional forms in estimating monotone and concave production functions.
