Abstract:The shift towards the "knowledge economy" has placed greater emphasis on innovation as a source of competitive advantage.But technology innovation activities are unpredictable and their processes are also full of all kinds of traps,so that firms often drive themselves into "the war of innovative attrition",and have to face innovation's dilemma.As an effective way of managing technology innovation,strategy of technology innovation has attracted more and more attentions of theorists and empiricists.Based on the initial results of an ongoing 1-year study,this article analyzes the structural model for the strategy of technology innovation in Chinese SMEs.

Abstract:Although recent academic literature and empirical research show that most firms have implemented cross-functional, or even cross-cultural innovative teams for the majority of the technological innovation projects undertaken, they are still finding it hard to ensure that these teams are successful in completing the innovation task. Trust and commitment are clearly important ingredients in these collaborations, but little is known about the challenges this new organization and social environment creates for the development of trust and commitment. Different disciplinary perspectives, different cultures, and the lack of understanding when working together raise significant barriers to developing trust and commitment. We, therefore, explore the dilemma of trust and commitment in the construction of an innovative team that most companies are always confronted with, especially Chinese private enterprises.

Abstract:We examine the influences of intra-industry and inter-industry foreign direct investment (FDI) presence, financial constraints and technological uncertainty on the short-termism in innovation by using an industry-level panel data of Chinese large- and medium-size manufacturing enterprises during the period of 2000 to 2009. Innovation behaviour is conceptualised as a process of knowledge acquisition and knowledge creation from a learning perspective. The empirical results show that intra-industry and inter-industry FDI presence have strong influences on firms' short-termism in both knowledge acquisition and knowledge creation, while financial constraints and technological uncertainty only affect firms' short-termism in knowledge acquisition. Another interesting finding is that intra-industry FDI presence is negatively related to firms' short-termism in knowledge acquisition and positively related to firms' short-termism in knowledge creation.

Abstract:We investigate the consequences of managerial myopia on both the quantity of innovation input and the quality of innovation outputs in China. Managerial myopia not only leads to a reduction in R&D investment but also results in a deterioration in the outputs, captured by the decrease in those substantive innovations and the degradation of patents' knowledge breadth. Encouragingly, effective corporate governance mechanisms tend to mitigate the adverse effects of managerial myopia on innovation, but external pressures from stock market and product market may prompt myopic management to hastily engage in R&D efforts, but with further deterioration in innovation quality.

Abstract:Researchers often focus on the positive implications of social capital, not recognizing that it may put the organizations at a competitive disadvantage if it limits access to other resources or discourages action. Based on findings from a large sample of Chinese manufacturers, the current study provides a more complete picture of the extent to which and under what conditions internal social capital fosters innovation and when it breaks down to limit performance. Results suggest a curvilinear relationship between internal social capital and innovation. Results also indicate that this curvilinear effect is strengthened by the extent to which employees share in the vision expressed by leaders. A moderation effect was also found with the extent to which there is alignment between the organization’s strategy and its human resource management (HRM). Innovation was greatest when both social capital and alignment were at moderate levels; a finding that suggests the HR department’s involvement in strategic planning, while necessary, may undermine the strategic flexibility needed for innovation when alignment is too great.

Exploitation or Exploration? Managerial Myopia, Economic Policy Uncertainty and Ambidextrous Innovation Investment

Abstract:In today's increasingly competitive international environment, original technology innovation has become essential for enhancing enterprises' sustainability. As key innovation needs constant exploration rather than growing leaps and bounds, it is often ignored by managers who focus on short-term performance. Taking the data of publicly listed Chinese companies from 2010 to 2020 as a sample, this paper put forward the relation between managerial myopia and ambidextrous innovation investment on the basis of a empirical approach combining machine learning technology. Results revealed that managerial myopia has different effects on the ambidextrous innovation investment of enterprises. Specifically, the study finds a significant negative association between managerial myopia and exploratory innovation investment, while there is no significant relationship with regard to exploitative innovation investment. Further study showed that the negative influence is weakened by economic policy uncertainty and stronger in companies with more severe agency problems. By shedding light on the way that managerial myopia affects enterprises' ambidextrous innovation investment, this research contributes to the literature on the impact of managerial myopia, offering key insights into how to cultivate the core competitiveness of enterprises and ensure their sustainable development.

Abstract:The engineering management literature has long acknowledged that innovation is the most significant differentiation strategy for firms to achieve competitiveness and hence firm performance. More recently, corporate social responsibility (CSR) is recognized as another differentiation strategy which also contributes to firm performance. However, the joint performance effects of innovation and CSR have not been sufficiently investigated, particularly on the interplay between different types of innovation and CSR. This study classifies innovation into solitary and collaborative innovation as well as incremental and radical innovation to examine their differential effects. Employing a panel dataset of 2377 Chinese manufacturing firms during the period of 2010–2019, we discover that there exists an inverted U-shaped CSR–performance relationship. More importantly, we reveal that collaborative innovation has a stronger attenuating effect on the inverted U-shaped performance effect of CSR than solitary innovation. Similarly, radical innovation has a stronger attenuating effect than incremental innovation. Our research advances the innovation and CSR literature by providing novel insights regarding how different types of innovation alter the curvilinear performance effect of CSR in an emerging economy.

Abstract:Based on literature review and case studies,this paper first analyzes the reasons for the slow enhancement of the innovation capability of Chinese enterprises.It then analyzes how the dynamics of strategies and organizations act on innovation capability.A dynamic system model is built up from this analysis.The simulation results of the model show that an important reason for the lack of innovation capability of Chinese enterprises is that their short-term performance goals erode their strategic goals.By setting lower performance goals to break the vicious cycle of performance and innovation capability,enterprises will form a virtuous cycle of mutual reinforcement.A more feasible method is that the enterprises,through adjustments and changes of the organizational structure and incentive system,set up a resource allocation principle which gives priority to capability so as to fundamentally ensure the priority of strategic objectives and quick upgrade of innovation capability.
Managerial Myopia and the Success of New Brands

Abstract:We examine how U.S. publicly listed firms’ brand innovation is sacrificed when managers reduce marketing budgets in order to make short-term earnings targets. Using the newly available U.S. trademark dataset to measure the lifespan of new brands, we find that new brands’ survival rate significantly declines following managers’ myopic cuts in marketing budgets. This effect is more pronounced for firms in industries with high advertising expenditures and in more reputation-sensitive industries. We further exploit an exogenous increase in managers’ myopia in response to a reduction in litigation risk for firms headquartered in the Ninth Circuit and find consistent results. Additional analyses show that the survival rate of new brands has a significantly positive impact on future sales growth and profitability, confirming the value-relevance of brand innovation and our findings.

Abstract:This study utilizes the upper echelons and time orientation theoretical frameworks to analyze the impact of managers' temporal disposition on financial asset allocation within corporations. Through textual analysis and panel data analysis, the study demonstrates a positive correlation between managerial myopia and financial asset allocation. The study observes that corporate governance moderates this relationship, with high managerial power and low analyst following resulting in a stronger effect. The study further establishes that managerial myopia influences financial asset allocation through the adoption of more conservative strategies. Furthermore, the study highlights that increased financial asset allocation leads to higher short-term profits, but negatively impacts innovation performance. The findings of the study emphasize the role of managers' temporal perspective in financialization and provide valuable insights into managerial behavior.

Abstract:We develop a dynamic multitasking model for a financially constrained firm that manages both current cash reserves through short-term effort incentives and firm growth via long-term effort incentives. We demonstrate that financing constraints lead to an overinvestment in short-term efforts compared to a scenario without such constraints, resulting in short-termism. In addition, we also show that both permanent and transitory shocks exert an ambiguous impact on the payout thresholds under conditions of positive correlation between the transitory and permanent shocks.

Abstract:Abstract This article examines the effect of institutional investors’ investment horizons on firms’ innovation activities. We conjecture that the presence of long‐term institutional investors mitigates managerial myopia, prompting firms to generate greater corporate innovation outputs. Using data on patents and patent citations for US firms, we find that institutions’ investment horizons are positively related to the number of patents and patent citations. We also document that long‐term (short‐term) institutional ownership is positively (negatively) related to the innovation outputs. This article makes an additional contribution to the corporate innovation literature by addressing the positive role of long‐term institutional investors.

Abstract:We examine the impact of financial reporting on corporate innovation. We find that firms that exhibit more conservative financial reporting generate fewer patents. Their patents also result in fewer citations and lower economic benefits. These effects of conservative financial reporting on innovation are more pronounced when firms have greater need for innovation, when the product development cycle is longer, or when managers are more myopic. Overall, our findings suggest that conservative financial reporting curbs corporate innovation by exacerbating the effects of managerial myopia. Our results are robust to a host of controls for endogeneity.

Abstract:Business organizations need to adopt a long-term, proactive mindset to prepare themselves for a major economic contraction. This study examines how firms temporally manage innovation productivity over the course of a recession. A historic analysis of the retail coffee and cryptocurrency industries during the 2020 recession offers a unique theoretical perspective. The emergent temporal framework from the historic analysis segments recession into three periods—atrophy, recovery, and proliferation—where each phase is characterized by distinct time horizons and innovation strategies. In the atrophy stage, firms adopted a short-term time horizon and employed defensive tactics, which negatively affected innovation productivity. In recovery, firms quickly adapted to recession conditions and started playing the "long game" by reinvesting in innovation. In proliferation, firms continued their long-term outlook, and innovation productivity heightened as investments into R&D made in earlier periods manifested into new products, services, and business models. Overall, the results suggest that industry-level innovation productivity spiked ( vs. diminished) as a result of the economic crisis, and that firms adopted both retrenchment and pro-active marketing strategies to manage innovation during recessionary times. The results suggest that thriving in post-recession markets is, veritably, a multi-stage, temporal game.

Abstract:We examine the effect of transition from private to public ownership via initial public offerings (IPOs) on firms’ choices between exploratory and exploitative innovation strategy. We argue that, due to managerial short-termism associated with public equity market, newly public firms are more (less) likely to adopt exploitative (exploratory) innovation strategy. We also examine how this relation is moderated by the presence of insider sales, the threat of hostile takeovers, and the presence of transient institutional investors, all of which exacerbate managerial short-termism. We find strong support for our theory based on a sample of 291 IPO firms and their matched private firms over the period 1997-2008 and difference-in-differences analyses. We discuss our paper’s contribution to research on exploratory versus exploitative innovation and on corporate governance.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Innovation contributes to a firm's long-term competitive advantages but also involves significant risk and uncertainty. As agency theory predicts, CEOs are self-interested and risk-averse, and thus are reluctant to engage in innovation investments. However, the extent to which CEOs are self-interested and the mechanisms through which self-interested CEOs affect firm innovation have not been empirically tested. To fill this gap, we propose that CEOs possess a mix of both self-preserving and other-regarding motives, and build a mediation model in which CEO values affect firm innovation via firms’ long-term orientation. Based on a three-phase (from 2014 to 2016) survey of 436 Chinese manufacturing firms, we find that CEOs with high self-regarding values reduce innovation efforts and performance by damaging a firm's long-term orientation. Moreover, CEO tenure, CEO duality, and environmental uncertainty weaken the relationship between CEO values and firm innovation via long-term orientation. Our study enriches the innovation literature by extending the basic assumptions of agency theory and by providing empirical evidence to determine whether and how self-regarded CEOs affect firm innovation.
