Abstract:Optical tuning of lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles has attracted considerable attention over the past decade because this development allows the advance of new frontiers in energy conversion, materials science, and biological imaging. Here we present a rational approach to manipulating the spectral profile and lifetime of lanthanide emission in upconversion nanoparticles by tailoring their nonlinear optical properties. We demonstrate that the incorporation of energy distributors, such as surface defects or an extra amount of dopants, into a rare-earth-based host lattice alters the decay behavior of excited sensitizers, thus markedly improving the emitters' sensitivity to excitation power. This work provides insight into mechanistic understanding of upconversion phenomena in nanoparticles and also enables exciting new opportunities of using these nanomaterials for photonic applications.

Abstract:The enthusiasm for research on lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles is driven by both a fundamental interest in the optical properties of lanthanides embedded in different host lattices and their promise for broad applications ranging from biological imaging to photodynamic therapy. Despite the considerable progress made in the past decade, the field of upconversion nanoparticles has been hindered by significant experimental challenges associated with low upconversion conversion efficiencies. Recent experimental and theoretical studies on upconversion nanoparticles have, however, led to the development of several effective approaches to enhancing upconversion luminescence, which could have profound implications for a range of applications. Herein we present the underlying principles of controlling energy transfer through lanthanide doping, overview the major advances and key challenging issues in improving upconversion luminescence, and consider the likely directions of future research in the field.

Abstract:Optical multiplexing plays an important role in applications such as optical data storage1, document security2, molecular probes3,4 and bead assays for personalized medicine5. Conventional fluorescent colour coding is limited by spectral overlap and background interference, restricting the number of distinguishable identities. Here, we show that tunable luminescent lifetimes τ in the microsecond region can be exploited to code individual upconversion nanocrystals. In a single colour band, one can generate more than ten nanocrystal populations with distinct lifetimes ranging from 25.6 µs to 662.4 µs and decode their well-separated lifetime identities, which are independent of both colour and intensity. Such ‘τ-dots’ potentially suit multichannel bioimaging, high-throughput cytometry quantification, high-density data storage, as well as security codes to combat counterfeiting. This demonstration extends the optical multiplexing capability by adding the temporal dimension of luminescent signals, opening new opportunities in the life sciences, medicine and data security.

Multicolor barcoding in a single upconversion crystal.

Abstract:We report the synthesis of luminescent crystals based on hexagonal-phase NaYF4 upconversion microrods. The synthetic procedure involves an epitaxial end-on growth of upconversion nanocrystals comprising different lanthanide activators onto the NaYF4 microrods. This bottom-up method readily affords multicolor-banded crystals in gram quantity by varying the composition of the activators. Importantly, the end-on growth method using one-dimensional microrods as the template enables facile multicolor tuning in a single crystal, which is inaccessible in conventional upconversion nanoparticles. We demonstrate that these novel materials offer opportunities as optical barcodes for anticounterfeiting and multiplexed labeling applications.

Abstract:Lanthanide-doped nanoparticles exhibit unique luminescent properties, including large Stokes shift, sharp emission bandwidth, high resistance to optical blinking, and photobleaching, as well as the unique ability to convert long-wavelength stimulation into short-wavelength emission. These attributes are particularly needed for developing luminescent labels as alternatives to organic fluorophores and quantum dots. In recent years, the well-recognized advantages of upconversion nanocrystals as biomarkers have been manifested in many important applications, such as highly sensitive molecular detection and autofluorescence-free cell imaging. However, their potential in multiplexed detection and multicolor imaging is rarely exploited, largely owing to the research lagging on multicolor tuning of these particles. Lanthanide doping typically involves an insulating host matrix and a trace amount of lanthanide dopants embedded in the host lattice. The luminescence observed from these doped crystalline materials primarily originates from electronic transitions within the [Xe]4f(n) configuration of the lanthanide dopants. Thus a straightforward approach to tuning the emission is to dope different lanthanide activators in the host lattice. Meanwhile, the host lattice can exert a crystal field around the lanthanide dopants and sometimes may even exchange energy with the dopants. Therefore, the emission can also be modulated by varying the host materials. Recently, the advance in synthetic methods toward high quality core-shell nanocrystals has led to the emergence of new strategies for emission modulation. These strategies rely on precise control over either energy exchange interactions between the dopants or energy transfer involving other optical entities. To provide a set of criteria for future work in this field, we attempt to review general and emerging strategies for tuning emission spectra through lanthanide doping. With significant progress made over the past several years, we now are able to design and fabricate nanoparticles displaying tailorable optical properties. In particular, we show that, by rational control of different combinations of dopants and dopant concentration, a wealth of color output can be generated under single-wavelength excitation. Strikingly, unprecedented single-band emissions can be obtained by careful selection of host matrices. By incorporating a set of lanthanide ions at defined concentrations into different layers of a core-shell structure, the emission spectra of the particles are largely expanded to cover almost the entire visible region, which is hardly accessible by conventional bulk phosphors. Importantly, we demonstrate that an inert-shell coating provides the particles with stable emission against perturbation in surrounding environments, paving the way for their applications in the context of biological networks.

Abstract:Luminescent materials with engineered optical properties have been developed for multiplexed labeling detection, where encoding capacity plays a pivotal role in the efficiency. However, multi-dimensional optical identities are usually not independent which essentially hinder the practical encoding numbers to access theoretical capacity. In this work, we carefully studied the sensitizer gradient doping structure in near-infrared (NIR) excitable upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) and managed to achieve independent emission intensity and lifetime tuning. With the orthogonally tunability, it breaks the constraint of intensity (k) and lifetime (n) correlation and expands the practical encoding number to theoretical value as (k+1)(n)-1 in binary encoding. This method can also be combined with previous lifetime engineering as well to realize high level multiplexing.

Abstract:Applications of rare-earth (Re)-doped upconversion (UC) micro/nanocrystals in varying areas have sparked a growing, constant demand for deliberate control over the luminescent profile and lifetime. A general strategy for adjusting UC luminescence is to control the dopant Re3+ concentration. However, the progress of elevating dopant concentration is significantly limited owing to frequently encountering severe concentration quenching. Herein, by designing UC system using Tm3+ with super long intermediate energy level lifetime and Yb3+ with a simple two-level structure as a activator/sensitizer combination, we have achieved the unusually intense deep ultraviolet (UV) UC emissions at 290 nm and 345 nm, near UV emission at 361 nm, visible blue emissions at 452 and 478 nm, and near infrared (NIR) emission at 803 nm in NaYF4:Yb/Tm microtubes under 980 nm excitation. The luminescence intensity reaches about 56 times and 8 times enhancement for the UV and blue emission, respectively, with the increase of dopant Yb3+ contents from 20 to 80%. While luminescence lifetimes for all emissions decrease, particularly, for NIR emission at 803 nm, from 1507 μs down to 384 μs. Importantly, upon 980 nm irradiation, these UC NaYF4:Yb/Tm microtubes exhibit superior optical performance as a promising candidate of advanced anti-counterfeiting applications and other applications including UV light triggered reactions and multiplexing information storage.

Abstract:Optical encoding together with color multiplexing benefits on-site detection, and enriching the components with narrow emissions from lanthanide could greatly increase the coding density. Here, we show a typical example to combine emission color and lifetime that are simultaneously integrated in a single lanthanide nanoparticle. With the multicompartment core/shell structure, the nanoparticles can activate different emitting pathways under varied excitation. This enables the nanoparticles to generate versatile excitation orthogonalized upconversion luminescence in both emission colors and lifetimes. As a typical example, green emission of Er3+ and blue emission of Tm3+ can be triggered with 808 and 980 nm lasers, respectively. Moreover, with incorporation of Tb3+, not only is emission from Tb3+ introduced but also the lifetime difference of 0.13 ms (Er3+) and 3.6 ms (Tb3+) is yielded for the green emission, respectively. Multiplexed fingerprint imaging and time-gated luminescence imaging were achieved in wavelength and lifetime dimensions. The spectral and lifetime encoding ability from lanthanide luminescence greatly broadens the scope of luminescent materials for optical multiplexing studies.
Triplet Orbital Coupling: Achieving Ultralong Lifetime and Color Control in Upconversion Luminescence

Abstract:Nonlinear luminescence with tunable color output and an ultralong lifetime of 1.37 s is achieved by coupling molecular triplet orbitals to lanthanide nanocrystals. In addition to the exciton transfer pathway from lanthanide ions to molecular singlet to triplet state, direct activation of the triplet state by excitons from lanthanide ions is also observed. Lanthanide‐doped nanocrystals typically exhibit limited time‐gated nonlinear luminescence with microsecond lifetimes because of their parity‐forbidden 4f–4f transitions. Here the direct observation of ultralong‐lived upconversion luminescence by coupling molecular triplet orbitals to lanthanide‐doped nanocrystals is reported. Through careful manipulation of the molecular triplet states, nanohybrids capable of producing ultralong upconversion lifetimes up to 1.37 s and tunable color output are constructed, surpassing the intrinsic lifetime of lanthanide ions by a factor of 4500. In addition to the exciton migration pathway from the 4f levels of lanthanide ions to the molecular singlet and then to triplet states, direct activation of the triplet state by exciton from the 4f levels is observed. This phenomenon significantly reduces the required photon energy (by more than 0.83 eV) for stimulation of the triplet state compared to the process involving intersystem crossing. Taking advantage of the unique properties of these nanohybrids, a pulsed laser‐pumped encryption system with enhanced security is developed by embedding additional passwords that contain information about pulse frequency and width. This work provides a new perspective on time‐resolved nonlinear luminescence with an ultrawide time dimension by engineering molecular triplet states.

Realizing Up-Conversion Fluorescence Tuning in Lanthanide-Doped Nanocrystals by Femtosecond Pulse Shaping Method.

Abstract:The ability to tune color output of nanomaterials is very important for their applications in laser, optoelectronic device, color display and multiplexed biolabeling. Here we first propose a femtosecond pulse shaping technique to realize the up-conversion fluorescence tuning in lanthanide-doped nanocrystals dispersed in the glass. The multiple subpulse formation by a square phase modulation can create different excitation pathways for various up-conversion fluorescence generations. By properly controlling these excitation pathways, the multicolor up-conversion fluorescence can be finely tuned. This color tuning by the femtosecond pulse shaping technique is realized in single material by single-color laser field, which is highly desirable for further applications of the lanthanide-doped nanocrystals. This femtosecond pulse shaping technique opens an opportunity to tune the color output in the lanthanide-doped nanocrystals, which may bring a new revolution in the control of luminescence properties of nanomaterials.

Abstract:Nanocrystal clear: Optical-magnetic (OM) bifunctional NaGdF 4:Nd3+,Yb3+,Er3+ nanocrystals were successfully synthesized that consist of luminescent Er3+ ions and a coordinating magnetic Gd3+ ion. On-the-fly Decoding Luminescence Lifetimes in the Microsecond Region for Lanthanide-Encoded Suspension Arrays.

Abstract:Significant multiplexing capacity of optical time-domain coding has been recently demonstrated by tuning luminescence lifetimes of the upconversion nanoparticles called 'τ-Dots'. It provides a large dynamic range of lifetimes from microseconds to milliseconds, which allows creating large libraries of nanotags/microcarriers. However, a robust approach is required to rapidly and accurately measure the luminescence lifetimes from the relatively slow-decaying signals. Here we show a fast algorithm suitable for the microsecond region with precision closely approaching the theoretical limit and compatible with the rapid scanning cytometry technique. We exploit this approach to further extend optical time-domain multiplexing to the downconversion luminescence, using luminescence microspheres wherein lifetimes are tuned through luminescence resonance energy transfer. We demonstrate real-time discrimination of these microspheres in the rapid scanning cytometry, and apply them to the multiplexed probing of pathogen DNA strands. Our results indicate that tunable luminescence lifetimes have considerable potential in high-throughput analytical sciences.
Tunable Excitation Polarized Upconversion Luminescence and Reconfigurable Double Anti‐Counterfeiting from Er3+ Doped Single Nanorods

Abstract:Tunable excitation polarization upconversion luminescence (EPUL) is realized in Er3+ doped nanorods, and the degree of excitation polarization (DOEP) is regulated from 0 to 0.5, responding to the non‐radiative transitions and population density of excited states. Furthermore, the polarized luminescence is applied to double anti‐counterfeiting with a size as small as 10 μm. Excitation polarized upconversion luminescence (EPUL) from lanthanide ions has attracted considerable attention due to its wide applications in microfluidics, single particle tracking, security inks, and cell internal viscosity testing. However, controlling the degree of excitation polarization (DOEP) of the EPUL remains a significant challenge. Here, the modulation of the DOEP (from 0 to 0.5) of the EPUL from Er3+ doped single nanorods by changing the concentration of doped Er3+, Yb3+, or Mn2+ is systematically studied. By analyzing the lifetimes and disproportionate changes in luminescence intensities, it is found that optimizing Er3+, Yb3+, or Mn2+ concentration can reduce non‐radiative transition and population density in excited states, leading to the enhancement of the DOEP under a good alignment of transition dipoles. Furthermore, the possibility of anti‐counterfeiting based on such tunable EPUL is illustrated. Three kinds of fine patterns with a small size of 10 μm are realized by assembling the single nanorods accurately via optical tweezers. The patterns and their EPUL guarantee double protection for the feasibility of anti‐counterfeiting. The findings of this study offer insights into the EPUL from lanthanide ions and provide a microscale platform via the EPUL for the application of multidimensional information encoding and reconfigurable double anti‐counterfeiting.

Abstract:A shining example of dopingMany technological materials are intentionally 'doped' by the introduction of trace amounts of foreign elements to impart new and useful properties — a classic example is the doping of semiconductors. Feng Wang et al. describe a system in which lanthanide doping can be used to control the growth of NaYF4 nanocrystals, making it possible to simultaneously tune the size, crystallographic phase and optical properties of the resulting materials. These findings increase our understanding of doping-induced structural transformations, and provide a straightforward route for the controlled synthesis of luminescent nanocrystals for many applications.

Continuous tuning of persistent luminescence wavelength by intermediate-phase engineering in inorganic crystals

Abstract:Multicolor tuning of persistent luminescence has been extensively studied by deliberately integrating various luminescent units, known as activators or chromophores, into certain host compounds. However, it remains a formidable challenge to fine-tune the persistent luminescence spectra either in organic materials, such as small molecules, polymers, metal-organic complexes and carbon dots, or in doped inorganic crystals. Herein, we present a strategy to delicately control the persistent luminescence wavelength by engineering sub-bandgap donor-acceptor states in a series of single-phase Ca(Sr)ZnOS crystals. The persistent luminescence emission peak can be quasi-linearly tuned across a broad wavelength range (500-630 nm) as a function of Sr/Ca ratio, achieving a precision down to ~5 nm. Theoretical calculations reveal that the persistent luminescence wavelength fine-tuning stems from constantly lowered donor levels accompanying the modified band structure by Sr alloying. Besides, our experimental results show that these crystals exhibit a high initial luminance of 5.36 cd m-2 at 5 sec after charging and a maximum persistent luminescence duration of 6 h. The superior, color-tunable persistent luminescence enables a rapid, programable patterning technique for high-throughput optical encryption.
Over 104 -fold amplified upconversion luminescence of lanthanide nanocrystals through optical oscillator-like system

Abstract:Recently, lanthanide (Ln) luminescent nanocrystals have attracted increasing attention in various fields such as biomedical imaging, lasers, and anticounterfeiting. However, due to the forbidden 4f-4f transition of lanthanide ions, the absorption cross-section and luminescence brightness of lanthanide nanocrystals are limited. To address the challenge, we constructed an optical oscillator-like system to repeatedly simulate lanthanide nanocrystals to enhance the absorption efficiency of lanthanide ions on excitation photons. In this optical system, the upconversion luminescence (UCL) of Tm3+ emission of ~450 nm excited by a 980 nm laser can be amplified by a factor beyond 104 . The corresponding downshifting luminescence of Tm3+ at 1460 nm was enhanced by three orders of magnitude. We also demonstrated that the significant luminescence enhancement in the designed optical oscillator-like system was general for various lanthanide nanocrystals including NaYF4 :Yb3+ /Ln3+ , NaErF4 @NaYF4 and NaYF4 :Yb3+ /Ln3+ @NaYF4 :Yb3+ @NaYF4 (Ln = Er, Tm, Ho) regardless of the wavelengths of excitation sources (808 and 980 nm). The mechanism study revealed that both elevated laser power in the optical system and multiple excitations on lanthanide nanocrystals were the main reason for the luminescence amplification. Our findings may benefit the future development of low-threshold upconversion and downshifting luminescence of lanthanide nanocrystals and expand their applications.
Luminescence enhancement through co-sensitization in lanthanide composites for efficient photocatalysis

Abstract:Lanthanide-doped nanocrystals that convert near-infrared (NIR) irradiation into shorter wavelength emission (ultraviolet-C) offer many exciting opportunities for biomedicine, bioimaging, and environmental catalysis. However, developing lanthanide-doped nanocrystals with high UVC brightness for efficient photocatalysis is a formidable challenge due to the complexity of the multiphoton process. Here, we report a series of heterogeneous core-multishell structures based on a co-sensitization strategy with multi-band enhanced emission profiles under 980 nm excitation. Interestingly, the multiphoton processes involving two to six-photon upconversion are highly promoted via a co-sensitization strategy. More importantly, through growth layers of TiO2 and CdS photocatalysts, these lanthanide nanocomposites with efficient multi-upconverted emission show efficient photocatalytic activity. This study provides a new perspective for mechanistic understanding of multiphoton processes in heterostructures and also offers exciting opportunities for highly efficient photocatalytic applications.

Abstract:The rare-earth nanocrystals containing Er3+ emitters offer very promising tools for imaging applications, as they can not only exhibit up-conversion luminescence but also down-conversion luminescence in the second near-infrared window (NIR II). Doping non-lanthanide cations into host matrix was demonstrated to be an effective measure for improving the luminescence efficiency of Er3+ ions, while still awaiting in-depth investigations on the effects of dopants especially those with high valence states on the optical properties of lanthanide nanocrystals. To address this issue, tetravalent Zr4+ doped hexagonal NaGdF4:Yb,Er nanocrystals were prepared, and the enhancement effects of the Zr4+ doping level on both up-conversion luminescence in the visible window and down-conversion luminescence in NIR II window were investigated, with steady-state and transient luminescence spectroscopies. The key role of the local crystal field distortions around Er3+ emitters was elucidated in combination with the results based on both of Zr4+ and its lower valence counterparts, e.g., Sc3+, Mg2+, Mn2+. Univalent ions such as Li+ was utilized to substitute Na+ ion rather than Gd3+, and the synergistic effects of Zr4+ and Li+ ions by co-doping them into NaGdF4:Yb,Er nanocrystals were investigated toward optimal enhancement. Upon optimization, the up-conversion emission of co-doped NaGdF4:Yb,Er nanocrystals was enhanced by more than one order of magnitude compared with undoped nanocrystals. The current studies thus demonstrate that the local crystal field surrounding emitters is an effective parameter for manipulating the luminescence of lanthanide emitters.

Abstract:Multimode luminescence with tunable optical properties is reported in lanthanide(III) and manganese(II) co-doped CaZnOS crystals. The materials display distinct emissions under excitations of X-ray, ultraviolet, and near-infrared photons as well as mechanical action, respectively. The excitation dependence of emission spectra stems from varying host-to-dopant and dopant-to-dopant energy transfer processes involved in different luminescence modes. By controlling intracrystal energy transfer through control of dopant concentration and combination, the emission spectra are precisely tuned across the visible to near-infrared. These findings highlight a facile approach to constructing multimode luminescent materials with intrinsically encrypted emission characteristics for advanced anticounterfeiting applications.
