Abstract:Viruses are obligate parasites that depend on hosts not only for survival but also for their genomes’ replication. As a result, the hosts affect the viruses in every aspect during the viral life cycle. In this chapter, we present a comprehensive review of the recent advances that elucidate the impact of hosts on the evolution of viruses, particularly plant viruses. Specifically, we focus on how the host affects viral genome stability, amino acid usage, synonymous codon usage, and dinucleotide bias. These topics have acquired increasing research interest in recent years because an understanding of the impact of hosts on the evolution of viruses allows us to gain insight into the specific interaction between viruses and their hosts, and it also provides us with comparative information of the adaptability of viruses to their hosts.
