AQP1 expression alterations affect morphology and water transport in Schwann cells and hypoxia-induced up-regulation of AQP1 occurs in a HIF-1α-dependent mannerNeuroscienceVol. 252PreviewAquaporins (AQPs), a family of membrane water channel proteins, have multiple physiological functions in diverse fluid transporting tissues, including the nervous system (Verkman, 2000; King and Yasui, 2002). The function and mechanism of AQPs in CNS injury have been extensively studied. According to the current literature (Manley et al., 2000; Badaut et al., 2001; Nicchia et al., 2003; Oshio et al., 2005), AQP1, AQP4, and AQP9 play important roles in brain water homeostasis. Importantly, AQP4 is the major channel protein responsible for the fast water transport of cultured astrocytes, and is involved in ischemia-induced cerebral edema. Full-Text PDF
