Abstract:An efficient, clean and facile protocol for the Knoevenagel condensation of aromatic aldehydes with active methylene compounds catalysed by task specific ionic liquid 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]-undec-7-en-8-ium acetate in an aqueous medium has been developed. The reactions proceed at room temperature and high to excellent yields were afforded. The work-up procedure is very simple. The ionic liquid could be recycled for 10 runs without noticeably loss of its catalytic activity.

Abstract:Ionic liquids, with their unique properties, including low volatility, high polarity, good thermal stability over a wide temperature range and selective dissolving capacity by a proper choice of cations or anions, have attracted increasing interest in the organic transformations as reactioin medium as well as catalyst (ligand). Compared with traditional organic solvents, ionic liquids have great advantages in obtaining products with high isolated yields and good to excellent selectivities, accelerationg reaction rate in some cases, ease of work-up, as well as recycling use with or without catalysts after simply recoveration. The paper reviews the advanced progress in the application of ionic liquids as reaction medium as well as catalysts to organic synthesis, mainly including coupling reaction, Michael addition, Baylis-Hillman reaction, Diels-Alder reaction, Aldol reaction, Knoevenagel condensation, cyclorization reaction, alkylation and acylation, oxidation and reduction etc.

Abstract:The ionic liquid [BMIM][NTf2] was developed as an ideal medium in which Rh(III)-catalyzed directed C–H carbenoid coupling reactions can be conducted efficiently and sustainably. More significantly, the ionic liquid can not only achieve the recycle of catalyst system but also improve the efficiency of catalyst, presenting that carbenoid coupling reactions can be accomplished at room temperature within a short period of time. Thus, this work would be useful in expanding applications of C–H activation strategies as tools for assembling novel organic molecules.

Abstract:Catalytic asymmetric 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions of activated isocyanides with various 2 pi dipolarophiles have been intensively studied, affording a wide range of enantioenriched five-membered N-heterocycles. In sharp contrast, the catalytic enantioselective higher-order cycloaddition of activated isocyanides has not been achieved yet. We present here our recent work on the development of an unprecedented silver-catalyzed highly diastereo- and enantioselective [3+3] cycloaddition of activated isocyanides with azomethine imines. This method features high efficiency, good to excellent stereocontrol, wide substrate scope, as well as operational simplicity. It is also noteworthy that the same catalytic system was proved to be suitable for not only the late-stage functionalization of complex bioactive molecules but also the kinetic resolution of racemic azomethine imines.

Abstract:An array of novel 1,4-diazobicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) based ionic liquids were developed and used as recyclable catalysts for the aza-Michael addition at room temperature without any organic solvent. [DABCO-PDO][OAc] was found to be the most efficient catalyst, and the amount of catalyst was only 10 mol %. Various amines reacted with a wide range of α,β-unsaturated amides, smoothly affording target products in good to excellent yields within hours. Moreover, the catalyst could be reused up to eight times, still maintaining a high catalytic activity. Finally, a plausible mechanism was proposed. FTIR and computational chemistry were used to verify the catalytic mechanism.

Abstract:Regarding the green chemistry's goals, ionic liquids (ILs) open a way to introduce amazing and efficient media for different reactions. Therefore, in the present study, a feasible protocol for the preparation of β-cyclodextrin/imidazolium based dicationic ionic liquid and its supported on silica gel, [βCD/Im](OTs)2-Silica are presented. Ability of this eco-friendly microvessel and host ionic liquid system in the one-pot three-components Hantzsch condensation reaction of arylaldehydes, ethylacetoacetate or dimedone and ammonium acetate are also described. The mild and easy reaction conditions, utilization of a catalyst with high catalytic activity and good reusability, and simple work-up procedure, makes this method as an interesting option for the facile and efficient synthesis of 1,4-dihydropyridine and polyhydroquinoline derivatives.

Abstract:In the current work, an acidic ionic liquid ([{(IMC)-4-OMBH}BIM][HSO4]3) has been utilized as an effective and recyclable catalyst for the synthesis of 2,4,5-trisubstituted-1H-imidazole derivatives with high yields under optimal reaction conditions and ultrasound irradiation. Important features of the new catalyst are facile synthesis, cheap reagents and successful reuse for many times. What makes the present method an effective contribution in the field of synthesis of 2,4,5-trisubstituted-1H-imidazole derivatives is the fact that it can be described as environmentally friendly, economical, short reaction time, possible recover of the catalyst, simple workup, safer and mild reaction conditions.Graphic abstract

Abstract:Asymmetric organocatalysts has been increasingly recognized as an important green alternative the highly-developed asymmetric transition metal catalysis and biotransformation. However, organocatalysis is just in its infancy and has many limitations such low efficiency and limited substrate scopes. We presented herein a novel strategy to address the above challenges by incorporating ionic-liquid moieties as building blocks for organocatalysts. The chiral ionic-liquid (CIL) organocatalysts still maintained the unique properties of ionic liquid, and meanwhile, served as efficient catalyst for judiciously selected reactions. The CIL organocatalysts were shown to be highly efficient and stereoselective catalysts for asymmetric Michael additions. By simple swap of the ionic liquid anion with a surfactant anion, a highly efficient catalysis was realized for the first time in pure water.
Functionalized Core–Shell Polystyrene Sphere-Supported Alkaline Imidazolium Ionic Liquid: An Efficient and Recyclable Catalyst for Knoevenagel Condensation

Abstract:A supported alkaline imidazolium ionic liquid catalyst with an ionic liquid shell and polystyrene core was synthesized. The core–shell structure was achieved by swelling polymerization of 4-vinylbenzyl chloride and divinylbenzene around polystyrene particles followed by quaternization reaction with 1-propyl-1H-imidazole and ion exchange. The results obtained from FTIR, SEM, TEM, TGA, DLS, and elemental analysis indicated that the ionic liquid shell was successfully coated on polystyrene spheres. The core–shell catalyst displayed excellent activity and solvent tolerance for Knoevenagel condensation of benzaldehyde with ethyl cyanoacetate because of its good dispersion, low mass-transfer resistance, and good swelling property. Meanwhile, it exhibited superb stability and recyclability, benefitting from the active species being anchored to the highly cross-linked polymer carrier. The catalyst was reused 10 times in water or methanol without significant change in catalytic activity, composition, and microstructure. Abstract:Four novel basic ionic liquids (ILs), based on 1,4-diazobicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) and 3-chloro-1,2-propanediol, have been introduced as catalysts for Knoevenagel condensation. These catalysts are applicable to a wide range of aromatic/heteroaromatic aldehydes with alpha-aromatic (heteroaromatic or polyaromatic)-substituted methylene compounds in water at room temperature, and they afford the products in excellent yields within short times. These reactions are operationally simple, and the desired products can be separated directly from the reaction mixture without further purification. A possible reaction mechanism was proposed, and the relevant evidence was given. In addition, the ionic liquids used can be regenerated and recycled several times without significant loss of activity. Furthermore, the novel ILs could be efficiently used in a step of atorvastatin synthesis.
Molecular Ionic Liquid Supported on Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles-Imprinted Iron Metal: A Recyclable Heterogeneous Catalyst for One-Pot, Three-Component Synthesis of a Library of Benzodiazepines

Abstract:Aim and objective: A novel and convenient transformation for the synthesis of benzodiazepines has been developed via catalytic cyclization reaction using ionic liquid supported on mesoporous silica nanoparticles- imprinted iron metal (Fe-MCM-41-IL) as a recyclable catalyst under mild conditions. Materials and methods: For preparation of Fe-MCM-41-IL, FeCl3·6H2O was added to a mixture of distilled water, CTAB and NaOH aqueous solution. The tetraethyl orthosilicate was dropped into the solution under stirring. The product was separated, washed, and dried. The solid product was collected and calcined. Then, to a solution of β-hydroxy-1,2,3-triazole in toluene, 3-chloropropyltrimethoxysilane was added and the mixture was refluxed. The Conc. H2SO4 was added dropwise into the above solution and stirred. For immobilization of IL onto Fe-MCM-41, the solution IL was added to Fe-MCM-41 and was refluxed for the production of the Fe- MCM-41. Following this, benzodiazepines were synthesized using Fe-MCM-41-IL as a catalyst. Results: The Fe-MCM-41-IL was prepared and characterized by a different analysis. The activity of the prepared catalyst as the above described was tested in the model reaction of o-phenyldiamine, tetronic acid, and different aldehydes under room temperature in ethanol solvent. Also, the catalyst could be recovered for five cycles. Conclusion: We developed a novel nanocatalyst for the synthesis of benzodiazepines in excellent yields. Fe- MCM-41-IL as a catalyst has advantages such as: environmental friendliness, reusability and easy recovery of the catalyst using an external magnet.

Abstract:In the view of the recoverability and high activity of the catalyst, the recent progresses of the experimental and theoretic researches on ionic liquid-supported catalysts in the fields such as cyclization reaction, oxidation reaction, hydrogen transfer reaction, polymerization and coupling reaction, are reviewed. It is pointed out that the solubility and reactivity of catalyst can be modulated with ionic liquid as supports.

Abstract:The novel ionic liquid with multi-SO3H groups has been synthesized through the simple procedure and its catalytic activity for the oxathioacetalization was investigated carefully at room temperature under solvent-free condition. The results showed that the novel ionic liquid was very efficient for the reactions with the average yields over 90%. Mild reaction conditions, high yields, small amount of usage, operational simplicity, needless of any solvent, wide applicability, reusability and chemoselectivity are the key features of this methodology.

Abstract:A new recyclable basic ionic liquid was introduced as an efficient catalyst for aldol condensation and transesterification reactions under environmentally friendly conditions. The catalyst was prepared based on methyl imidazolium moieties bearing hydroxide counter anions via the Hofmann elimination on a 1,3,5-triazine framework. The ionic liquid with two functionalities including anion stabilizer and high basicity, was used as an efficient catalyst for aldol condensation as well as transesterification reaction of a variety of alkyl benzoates. All reactions were performed in the absence of any external reagent, co-catalyst, or solvent, in line with environmental protection. The kinetics isotope effect (KIE) was conducted for the transesterification reaction to elucidate the mechanism and rate determining step (RDS). It worth noted that, the homogeneous catalyst could be recycled from the reaction mixture and reused for several consecutive runs with insignificant drop of basicity and conversion.

Abstract:A series of periodic mesoporous organosilica supported benzotriazolium ionic liquids were synthesized and tested as effective and practical heterogeneous catalysts in the condensation reaction of diphenylethanedione, aromatic aldehydes and ammonium acetate. The catalyst (1.0) showed brilliant catalytic activity for the synthesis of 2,4,5-trisubstituted imidazoles with good to high yields. We also found that the catalytic activity could be significantly influenced by the loading levels and functional anions of the benzotriazolium-cation ionic liquid, probably due to an intensification of intramolecular synergistic effect. Furthermore, the multifunctional catalyst (1.0) could be easily recovered by filtration and recycled for six times with no significant loss in activity, indicating its excellent stability and reusability. Abstract:Two kinds of task-specific ionic liquids (Ils) composed of imidazolinium or pyridinium cations with a carboxy group and hydrogensulfate as counterion have been synthesised and their application in oxidation of olefins has been studied. The carbonyl compounds were obtained from the oxidation of chain olefins, and 1,2-cycloalkandiols were obtained from cycloalkenes in the novel oxidation systems which are easily manipulated. The products can be easily isolated from the reaction system and the ILs can readily be recovered and reused.

Abstract:A type of MCM-41 supported dicationic imidazolium ionic liquid nanocatalyst has been synthesized and found to be competent for the synthesis of 2-oxazolidinones through the sustainable chemical conversion of CO2 with aziridines. It was shown that the highest efficiency was achieved in the cycloaddition of a series of aziridines and CO2 in the presence of a catalytic amount of the solid catalyst MCM-41@ILLaCl4 under mild conditions. Merits of this meticulously designed protocol are the use of a novel supported ionic liquid catalyst, the easy work-up process, good to excellent yields, a short reaction time, and purification without column chromatography. Overall, the present protocol of synthesizing 2-oxazolidinones under cocatalyst- and solvent-free conditions using MCM-41@ILLaCl4 is promising for industrial applications.
