Abstract:Purpose - This study aims to examine whether and how hotel class, attributes of the room, quality, location, cleanliness, and service influence room rates in hotels.Design/methodology/approach - Regression models were developed for the hotel industry and for various grades of hotels.Findings - Using data from New York, empirical findings suggest that room quality and location are important determinants of room price for the industry, but attributes that can influence room rates differ greatly among hotel segments.Practical implications - Hotels can reap benefits from understanding customers' specific expectation of a market segment and seeking to provide amenities accordingly.Originality/value - The quality of hotel attributes is evidenced through customer reviews on a travel advice website. The theory of the hierarchy of needs is supported in the hotel industry, namely, the ascending order of accommodation needs are the quality of a room, location, and service.

Abstract:In the lodging industry, insufficient attention has been given to how attributions affect prices. It is commonly asserted that the three most important attributes that a hotel can offer are location, location and location. This article examines how Traffic and Tourism Nodes differentially affect prices in the lodging industry in the Beijing, PRC. Spatial autocorrelation, Kriging interpolation and partial correlation are used and compared using price data of 230 hotels above in Beijing, PRC. There shows evidence of spatial autocorrelation in room prices of hotels within city of Beijing by using the Moran's I index. Furthermore, using partial correlation analysis, the research finds that the distances between hotels and the traffic nodes effect the room prices much more significantly than the distances between the hotels and the tourism node, but there are more additional attributes affecting the room prices. This article outlines a method for determining the values, or implicit prices, of a hotel attributes at market rates. If hotel managers know what attributes are determinants, or salient, amongst consumers in their choice of lodging, they can concentrate on these attributes in marketing; in particular, pricing and promotion methods can be applied to fixed both attributes such as location.

Abstract:This paper examines the hotel online-booking market in China. Information on prices along with three attributes, room type, location, and star rank, have been collected from nine representative online-booking websites. The empirical results show significant relationships between price dispersion and the room attributes. Key findings include: the higher the hotel rank and room type, the larger the price dispersion; the three cities exhibit different price dispersion patterns, and the higher the quality of the room, the larger the price dispersion is affected by location.

Abstract:This study examined the issue of pricing practices across third-party online intermediaries, and measured the scale of price dispersion in the hotel online booking market in Mainland China. The empirical results reveal that all four factors have significant effects on price dispersion of hotel online reservations, and the effects of type, rank, and location on price dispersion do not change along the factor of date. Abstract:We collected data from 11 travel websites and 23 hotels of dif- ferent star ranks in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou from June 9, 2005 to July 31, 2006. Our empirical study tries to test price dispersion across four factors: Type, Rank, Location and Date. The results show that all the four factors have significant effects on price dispersion of hotel online reserva- tion in which the hotel (star-) Rank has the most significant impact and the effects of Type, Rank and Location on price dispersion do not change along the factor of Date. Key findings include: the higher the hotel rank and room type, the larger the price dispersion; the three cities exhibit dif- ferent price dispersion patterns and the higher the quality of the room. We also find that the magnitude of price dispersion is different across Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Shanghai data exhibit the largest price disper- sion while the differences in Beijing and Guangzhou are not significant. The magnitude of price dispersion in Shanghai is the highest and Beijing is the lowest among all the three cities. The higher the quality of the room, the larger the price dispersion is affected by location. It is important to find out more about the factors that influence the price dispersion in the hotel online booking market. Brand loyalty, advertising, and distribution of ho- tels may all contribute to the persistent price dispersion in the hotel online booking markets. However, we have not assessed any embedded effect related to hotel name, such as trust, loyalty, and so on. As each hotel has different types of rooms available and charges different rates accordingly, are there any correlations among the rates? Do the different distribution channels of hotels have a big impact on the price dispersion across cities and force hoteliers making different strategies? Further studies should use data from a more comprehensive set of hotels to dig deeply into the pricing strategies.

Abstract:This study illustrates that determinants of customer satisfaction in hospitality venues can be identified through an analysis of online reviews. Using text mining and content analysis of 42,668 online traveler reviews covering 774 star-rated hotels, the study found that transportation convenience, food and beverage management, convenience to tourist destinations and value for money are identified as excellent factors that customers booking both luxury and budget hotels consider important and for which the performance is much satisfactory to them. Customers paid more attention to, but were less satisfied with, bed, reception services and room size and decoration. Most determinants of customer satisfaction also showed a consensus over luxury versus budget hotels, except for factors referring to lobby and sound insulation. As per its findings, the article concludes by presenting theoretical and managerial implications.

Abstract:Investigating the role of pricing and revenue management is a continual concern as successful businesses rely on sound financial management. This paper examines the pricing objectives, strategy determinants, and strategies employed by hotels while taking managerial concerns into account. The study determines managers’ key pricing concerns and investigates value-informed pricing strategies, making comparisons against the findings of past research to address calls for further investigations. Employing an embedded mixed methods research approach, the study used structured questionnaires and semistructured interviews to gather data from hotel managers influential in price setting. Overall, the study indicates similarities and differences in price determination factors in the hotel industry. Formality in determining prices suggests that pricing is integral to hotel management and hotels employ different pricing strategies depending upon the pricing objectives and strategy determinants. A significant finding is that upscale hotels place high importance on pricing due to intense competition related to their wider product portfolio in comparison to luxury and mid-scale hotels and tend to rely on competition-based pricing. Although exploratory in nature, the results are valuable and provide compelling practical implications and suggestions for future research. Hotel managers can benefit from the wider issues stressed in the paper related to short-term versus long-term, firm-based versus market-based, and relationship versus revenue considerations.

Abstract:Insufficient attention has been given to hotel-room-price attributions and its mechanism in the lodging research field till now. This article examines how site and situation factors differently affect lodging industry and room prices. Comparative analysis of four hedonic price models has been conducted to investigate how these attributions influence room price of Beijing's hotels above star three. Spatial autocorrelation in hotel prices and in hedonic room price equation residuals were analyzed in this research too. Some conclusions can be found and summarized: according to the estimated results, for specific locales, the results expressed in a global model might be inaccurate. The fitting coefficient of geographically weighted regression demonstrates the importance of going beyond the global modeling framework when incorporating geographically weighted regression into hedonic price model. At last, an innovative method for determining the influence of a hotel's attributes at market rates on its’ values, or implicit prices was put forward by the authors.

Abstract:Abstract Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine how the availability or absence of different hotel attributes affect the room rate during a given period. This study identified the impact of various hotel attributes on the room rate. Research methodology: Published data on available hotel attributes, and room rates of selected room categories of star-graded hotels in Colombo district, Sri Lanka, were gathered online through booking.com. The Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method was used to estimate the impact of key determinants under hotel amenities, quality signals, and locational attributes. Results: The results revealed eleven key attributes of the room rate in star-graded hotels, illustrating the positive impact from seven determinants and the negative impact from four determinants. Hotel class or star grade was the most significant determinant in the room rate, which generally determines the pricing behavior and service quality and most of the attributes and characteristics in a hotel. Availability of a business center, location of the hotel, fitness center/spa, total number of rooms in the hotel, room size, and view from room also significantly determined the room rate. Limitations: Booking.com, as the most popular Online Travel Agent (OTA) used in Sri Lanka, it was assumed that the information is frequently updated. The study was extended for the hotels in the Colombo district, and hence, the results were based on the point data, which may not be an islandwide representation or year through data. Contribution: As theoretical applications are underused in pricing and revenue decisions in the Sri Lankan hotel sector, results will lead to advance the decision making of practitioners, and this study will be a complement to the lack of literature in the field of revenue management in Sri Lankan context and may encourage future researchers laying an inspiring beginning.

Abstract:Sleep quality heavily shapes the tourism experience because tourists spend a large amount of their travel time sleeping. In this study, we propose a conceptual framework of factors influencing sleep quality in hotels based on personal and hotel characteristics. Personal characteristics include demographic, biopsychosocial, and tripographic factors; hotel characteristics consist of hotel location, facilities, and the sleeping environment. By analyzing TripAdvisor hotel review data in Los Angeles, we estimate a mixed-effects ordered logit model to understand the factors that influence sleep quality as well as the hotel sleeping environment as indicated by sentiment analysis. The results validate our proposed conceptual model. Hotel sleep quality is found to vary by age, gender, traveler type, and review experience. In addition, hotel star rating, nearby restaurant density, number of hotel floors, and the hotel sleeping environment also influence hotel sleep quality. Implications of this study are provided in closing.

The Influence of Online Reviews to Online Hotel Booking Intentions

Abstract:Purpose – This study aims to investigate the impacts of online review and source features upon travelers’ online hotel booking intentions. Design/methodology/approach – This study developed a research model and empirically examined the model by collecting data from business travelers in the Mainland China. Factor analysis was adopted to identify features of online reviews content and source attribute. Regression analysis was used to examine impacts of these attributes upon travelers’ online booking intention. Findings – Six features of online reviews content and one source attribute were identified, namely, usefulness, reviewer expertise, timeliness, volume, valence (negative and positive) and comprehensiveness. Regression analysis results testified positive causal relationships between usefulness, reviewer expertise, timeliness, volume and comprehensiveness and respondents’ online booking intentions. A significantly negative relation between negative online reviews and online booking intentions was identified, whereas impacts from positive online reviews upon booking intentions were not statistically significant. Research limitations/implications – The major limitation of this study is that interrelationships among features of online reviews, which were discussed in other similar studies, were not considered. Still, this study benefited researchers from scrutinizing features of online reviews, rather than several of them. As such, it offered more comprehensive suggestions for practitioners in how to better utilize online reviews as a marketing tool. Practical implications – Hospitality practitioners could enhance consumer review management by applying the six underlying factors of online review in the present study to find out the ways of increasing consumers’ booking intentions in the specific hotel contexts. Originality/value – A major theoretical contribution of this paper is its comprehensiveness in examining features of review content as well as its source simultaneously. This study also offered areas worthy of more research efforts from perspectives of practitioners and researchers.

Abstract:This study examines how perceived hotel website attributes influence consumers' booking intentions. From a dynamic view, this study integrates privacy, security and consumers' perceived protection against online purchasing risks into the empirical model obtained from existing literature. Moreover, consumers' Internet experiences, as a dynamic learning process, are considered a moderator in the relationship between website quality and booking intentions. Empirical results support the expected hypotheses concerning the effects of website dimensions on booking intentions wherein website usability and booking intentions are the strongest. Moreover, the power law of practice exists as daily and yearly Internet experience can moderate such causal relationship. Implications for hoteliers and future researchers are also presented at the end of this article.

Abstract:In light of the development of online travel agencies (OTAs), the rules of the entire tourism industry have changed. Due to the ease of finding information and comparing products, consumers can choose a hotel not only by room type, but also by rate, according to their preferences. The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of price discrimination on the fairness perception toward reservation intentions. The interaction effects of the brand familiarity and the type of consumers on the fairness perception were also examined. The study used an experimental design, with 2 price discriminations × 2 brand familiarities × 2 regulatory focuses, on a total of 320 valid subjects. The results showed that advantaged-price discriminations had higher fairness perceptions than equal-price discriminations, and that higher fairness perceptions had higher reservation intentions. The interaction effect of brand familiarity showed no significant impact on the fairness perceptions, while the regulatory focus had a mitigating effect on the price discrimination and on the fairness perceptions. This study provides insights into the relationship between online price discrimination and tourism, and it contributes to the literature on hospitality. It also provides the managerial implications for online hotels in developing pricing strategies.

Abstract:Despite hospitality and tourism researchers’ recent attempts on examining different aspects of online word-of-mouth [WOM], its impact on hotel sales remains largely unknown in the existing literature. To fill this void, we conduct a study to empirically investigate the impact of online consumer-generated reviews on hotel room sales. Utilizing data collected from the largest travel website in China, we develop a fixed effect log-linear regression model to assess the influence of online reviews on the number of hotel room bookings. Our results indicate a significant relationship between online consumer reviews and business performance of hotels.

Abstract:Service quality, customer satisfaction and price are important selection criteria for the guests and key determinants of post‐purchase behavior such as word‐of‐mouth and repurchase. Using structural equation modelling, the authors of this study investigate the drivers of service and price satisfaction, and the impact of service and price satisfaction on loyalty. The results show that the five dimensions of service satisfaction differ in their relative importance as drivers of overall satisfaction and as drivers of price satisfaction, and that price satisfaction and service satisfaction influence guest loyalty to a different extent. This relationship is strongly moderated by the guests' nationality, indicating cross‐cultural differences in the importance of service dimensions. This study also investigates the three‐factor theory of customer satisfaction and shows that the relative impact of the service dimensions can be asymmetric.

Abstract:The paper aims to investigate the relationship between tourism seasonality, online user ratings and the determinants of hotel prices based on the hedonic price model using the online dataset of hotels in Sanya, China. The empirical results of ordinary least squares (OLS) and quantile regressions both show that hotel prices are highly related to tourism seasonality. Compared to the low season, hotel prices increase by 23.1% in the high season and by 159.9% during Chinese New Year. Online user ratings demonstrate heterogeneous impacts on both location and time dimensions in hotel pricing. The quantile regressions further indicate that hotels with higher prices are less sensitive to seasonality and that the online user rating plays a more important role for mid and low-priced hotels by mitigating the negative seasonal effects on hotel prices. Our findings provide new evidence supporting the current literature and offer useful implications for hospitality management.

Abstract:This study analyzes the impact of internal features and external environmental attributes on room prices by using geographic weighted regression (GWR) in high-end rural homestays in China. The results show that (1) distance from the scenic spots (Sdistance) and the number of employees have the most significant effects on room prices; (2) the physical geography factors (slope and aspect) of the homestay have a positive impact on its room price; (3) the GWR coefficient clearly reflects the heterogeneity of the space and the verified GWR is more suited to homestay room pricing. The study expands the hedonic potential for market analysis in the homestay sector and provides operators of high-end rural homestays with the managerial implications of establishing an effective strategy for room pricing and has a certain guiding significance for the layout of homestay industry.
