Abstract:The synthesis of D, L-alpha-tocopherol from trimethylhydroquinone and isophytol using the Bronsted acidic SO3H-functionalized ionic liquids as catalysts was explored. The catalytic activities of the SO3H-functionalized ionic liquids were dependent on their anions. The yield of D, L-alpha-tocopherol also depended on the solvent, which was the reaction medium. A yield of 94.3% was obtained using the SO3H-functionalized ionic liquid with [BF4-] anion as catalyst in propylene carbonate/heptane. The reaction mixture exhibited good biphasic behaviors, so that the produced D, L-alpha-tocopherol could be separated by decantation. The SO3H-functionalized ionic liquids could be reused after the removal of water.

Abstract:The novel efficient procedure has been developed for the oxathioacetalization of carbonyl compounds and 2-mercaptoethanol at room temperature under solvent-free condition. The results showed that the novel multi-SO 3 H functionalized ionic liquid was very efficient for the reactions with the good to excellent yields in short time. Operational simplicity, without need of any solvent, room temperature, low cost of the catalyst used, high yields, applicability to large-scale reactions, reusability and chemoselectivity are the key features of this methodology.

Abstract:Continuous synthesis of D,L-alpha-tocopherol catalyzed by a sulfonic acid-functionalized ionic liquid was conducted in supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2). The product was continuously separated from the reaction mixture by SC-CO2 extraction during the course of reaction. Decompression of the supercritical fluid mixture downstream gave the product free of ionic liquid. The yield Of D,L-a-tocopherol was improved with non-polar SC-CO2 and polar propylene carbonate as solvents. The selectivity of D,L-alpha-tocopherol to trimethylhydroquinone (TMHQ) between CO2-rich and ionic liquid-rich phase increased with the increase of pressure, and decreased with the increase of temperature at temperatures from 70 to 115 degrees C and pressures from 15 to 25 MPa. Effect of temperature, pressure and flow rate on the continuous synthesis of D,L-alpha-tocopherol was studied. The conversion of isophytol (IP) and the yield of D,L-alpha-tocopherol increased with decreasing pressure. The extraction rate of D,L-alpha-tocopherol increased with increasing pressure and decreased with increasing temperature. D,L-alpha-Tocopherol yield of 90.4% was obtained at 100 degrees C, 20 IVIPa and a CO2 residence time of 12.6 min. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Four novel basic ionic liquids (ILs), based on 1,4-diazobicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) and 3-chloro-1,2-propanediol, have been introduced as catalysts for Knoevenagel condensation. These catalysts are applicable to a wide range of aromatic/heteroaromatic aldehydes with alpha-aromatic (heteroaromatic or polyaromatic)-substituted methylene compounds in water at room temperature, and they afford the products in excellent yields within short times. These reactions are operationally simple, and the desired products can be separated directly from the reaction mixture without further purification. A possible reaction mechanism was proposed, and the relevant evidence was given. In addition, the ionic liquids used can be regenerated and recycled several times without significant loss of activity. Furthermore, the novel ILs could be efficiently used in a step of atorvastatin synthesis.

Abstract:The acetalization reactions of isobutyraldehyde with 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol (TMPD) for the synthesis of 2,4-diisopropyl-5,5-dimethyl-1,3-dioxane were carried out under mild reaction conditions using four water-stable Brønsted-acidic task-specific ionic liquids ([HMIM]BF4, —SO3H functionalized acidic ionic liquid, —COOH functionalized acidic ionic liquid, [NMP][HSO4]) as environmentally benign catalysts for the first time. The process is highly effective and very selective. The —COOH functionalized Brønsted acidic ionic liquid with the two acid sites (IL-3) exhibited the most excellent catalytic performance under mild reaction conditions. The —COOH functionalized Brønsted acidic ionic liquid could be conveniently separated from the product and easily recycled in subsequent runs.

Abstract:Some traditional acidic ionic liquids (AILs) have shown great catalytic potential in esterification; meanwhile, the design and application of more new AILs are expected at present.Tropine-based functionalized acidic ionic liquids (FAILs) were synthesized to realize esterification catalysis for the first time; with aspirin synthesis as the template reaction, key influences on the substrate conversion and product yield of the synthesis, such as IL type, ratio of salicylic acid to acetic anhydride, temperature, reaction time and amount of IL, were investigated. The new tropine-based FAILs exhibited excellent performance in catalytic synthesis of aspirin with 88.7% yield and 90.8% selectivity. Multiple recovery and re-usage of N-(3-propanesulfonic acid) tropine is the cation, and p-toluenesulfonic acid is the anion. ([Trps][OTs]) shows satisfactory results. When [Trps][OTs] was used to catalyze different esterification reactions, it also showed good results. The above studies proved that ionic liquid [Trps][OTs] could serve as an ideal green solvent for esterification reaction, which serves as a suitable substitute for current catalysts.
