Abstract:Transition-metal-doping can improve some physical properties of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanowires (NWs), which leads to important applications in miniature devices. Here, we investigated the elastic moduli of single-crystalline pristine and Fe-doped rutile TiO2 NWs using the three-point bending method, which is taken as a case study of impacts on the elastic properties of TiO2 NWs caused by transition-metal-doping. The Young's modulus of the pristine rutile TiO2 NWs decreases when the cross-sectional area increases (changing from 246 GPa to 93.2 GPa). However, the elastic modulus of the Fe-doped rutile NWs was found to increase with the cross-sectional area (changing from 91.8 GPa to 200 GPa). For NWs with similar geometrical size, the elastic modulus (156.8 GPa) for Fe-doped rutile NWs is 24% smaller than that (194.5 GPa) of the pristine rutile TiO2 NWs. The vacancies generated by Fe-doping are supposed to cause the reduction of elastic modulus of rutile TiO2 NWs. This work provides a fundamental understanding of the effects of transition-metal-doping on the elastic properties of TiO2 NWs.

Abstract:The electronic, optical, and magnetic properties of H2Ti3O7 are investigated by first-principles density function theory calculations, and also the modifications of these properties by metal intercalation in H2Ti3O7. It is shown that the band gap of H2Ti3O7 may be significantly reduced by Fe or Ni intercalation, and that the intercalated Fe or Ni may form a one-dimensional (1D) channel via overlapping 3d orbitals along the [010] direction in the interlayer region. These overlapping 3d orbitals result in an extended band within the band gap region of H2Ti3O7 and below its Fermi level, and this band in turn results in a low effective mass for hole transport along the 1D channel and a large magnetic moment for the Fe or Ni intercalated material.

Abstract:The electronic structure and optical properties of transition metals （TM）-doped （Fe, Co or Ru） titanate nanotubes （TNTs） have been investigated by using the plane-wave ultrasoft pseudopotential method. TM atom intercalation into the interlayer region of the layered TNTs structure has great influence on the geometry of the original structure and the formation energy of Co-doping or Ru-doping is lower after geometry optimizations. Doped atoms bond with the surrounding O atoms to form a kind of solid solution. The results show that, Fe,Co or Ru intercalation reduces the band gap of TNTs and introduces new energy levels in the band gap, extending the absorption edge of the doped TNTs well into the visible region, which is due to the appearance of the b1g（dx2－y2） and a1g（dz2） states; partial impurity bands are in semi-filled states, which act as the capture centers of holes to reduce the recombination of electrons and holes; the valence bands of the doped TNTs move towards low energy, making the holes more oxidative. Finally, the absorption spectrum of the doped TNTs shows that Ru-doped TNTs has a stronger absorptive capacity in the visible region.
Electronic, Optical, and Magnetic Properties of Fe-Intercalated H2ti3o7 Nanotubes: First-Principles Calculations and Experiments

Abstract:The electronic structures and optical properties of titanate nanotubes have been studied. It was shown that H2Ti3O7 is a large gap insulator with an energy gap of 3.3 eV, and Fe intercalation into the interlayer region of the layered H2Ti3O7 structure greatly reduces the band gap and improves significantly the visible light absorbtion property of this material. Detailed first-principle calculations revealed that a stable structure exists for the Fe-intercalated H2Ti3O7 structure with a formula FeHTi6O14. The intercalated Fe atoms in the interlayer region of FeHTi6O14 form a one-dimensional (1D) Fe chain along [010], and the overlapped Fe-3d(z)(2) orbitals along the channel result in a delocalized 1D band below the Fermi level extending the absorption edge of FeHTi6O14 well into the visible region. This 1D Fe chain also results in a large exchange splitting between the majority and minority spins, making FeHTi6O14 a promising magnetic insulator with interesting magnetic properties.
Synthesis and Characterization of Ion-Exchangeable Titanate Nanotubes

Abstract:Titanate nanotubes were synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. The optimized synthesis (100-180 degrees C, longer than 48 h), thermal and hydrothermal stability, ion exchangeability and consequent magnetic and optical properties of the titanate nanotubes were systematically studied in this paper. First, nanotubes with monodisperse pore-size distribution were prepared. The formation mechanism of the titanate nanotubes was also studied. Second, the thermal and hydrothermal stability were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and Raman spectroscopy. Results showed that sodium ions played a significant role in the stability of the frameworks. Third, the selective ion exchangeability was demonstrated with a series of ions. The ion substitution also enlarged the BET surface area of the titanate nanotubes to 240 m(2) x g(-1). Combination of these two features implied that these nanotubes might be functionalized by substitution of different transitional-metal ions and consequently used for selective catalysis. Magnetism, photoluminescence, and UV/Vis spectra of the substituted titanate nanotubes revealed that the magnetic and optical properties of the nanotubes were modifiable.

Abstract:Complex oxide thin-film heterostructures often exhibit magnetic properties different from those known for bulk constituents. This is due to the altered local structural and electronic environment at the interfaces, which affects the exchange coupling and magnetic ordering. The emergent magnetism at oxide interfaces can be controlled by ferroelectric polarization and has a strong effect on spin-dependent transport properties of oxide heterostructures, including magnetic and ferroelectric tunnel junctions. Here, using prototype La2/3Sr1/3MnO3/BaTiO3 heterostructures, we demonstrate that ferroelectric polarization of BaTiO3 controls the orbital hybridization and magnetism at heterointerfaces. We observe changes in the enhanced orbital occupancy and significant charge redistribution across the heterointerfaces, affecting the spin and orbital magnetic moments of the interfacial Mn and Ti atoms. Importantly, we find that the exchange coupling between Mn and Ti atoms across the interface is tuned by ferroelectric polarization from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic. Our findings provide a viable route to electrically control complex magnetic configurations at artificial multiferroic interfaces, taking a step toward low-power spintronics.
Structure-tunable Synthesis and Structural Stabilities of the Multilayered Titanate Nanotube Thin Films Grown on Titanium Metal Surface

Abstract:Multilayered titanate nanotube thin films were grown on titanium metal surface via a hydrothermal surface treatment process.A general formation mechanism for oriented titanate nanotube thin film was proposed on the basis of detailed SEM and TEM observation of the products.The overall formation of titanate nanotube can be summarized as a sequence of four steps:(1) titanium dissolution and alkali titanate hydrogel formation;(2) alkali titanate hydrogel dissolution and layered Na2Ti3O7 formation;(3) layered Na2Ti3O7 growth;(4) nanotube formation via Na2Ti3O7 splitting and the multilayer scrolling process.The effects of post-treatment conditions on the film morphology and stability were examined.The layer-delaminating of multilayered titanate nanotube thin films were obtained after ultrasonic treatment.

Electronic and optical properties of metal-doped TiO$_2$ nanotubes: Spintronic and photocatalytic applications

Abstract:Due to their characteristic geometry, TiO$_2$ nanotubes (TNTs), suitably doped by metal-substitution to enhance their photocatalytic properties, have a high potential for applications such as clean fuel production. In this context, we present a detailed investigation of the magnetic, electronic, and optical properties of transition-metal doped TNTs, based on hybrid density functional theory. In particular, we focus on the $3d$, the $4d$, as well as selected $5d$ transition-metal doped TNTs. Thereby, we are able to explain the enhanced optical activity and photocatalytic sensitivity observed in various experiments. We find, for example, that Cr- and W-doped TNTs can be employed for applications like water splitting and carbon dioxide reduction, and for spintronic devices. The best candidate for water splitting is Fe-doped TNT, in agreement with experimental observations. In addition, our findings provide valuable hints for future experimental studies of the ferromagnetic/spintronic behavior of metal-doped titania nanotubes.

Abstract:The n-type titanate heterojunction with p-type transition metal oxides reduces the recombination effect (e−/h+) and improves the magnetic, electronic, and luminescent properties. Based on these related properties, the synthesis of nanocomposite sodium-cobalt titanate nanotube and iron oxide (Co-NaTiNT@FeO) was performed using titanium dioxide (polymorphic mixture: brookite, anatase and rutile), cobalt nitrate hexahydrate and iron oxide (FeO). The synthesized materials were characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman and infrared (IR) spectroscopies, thermogravimetry and differential (TG-dTG), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), adsorption/desorption of N2 by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method, Ultraviolet–Visible (UV–Vis) by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), photoluminescence (PL), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The results revealed the presence of Co2+ ions in the lamellar region of the nanotubes, in addition to verifying that there was no collapse of the nanotubes before and after the anchoring of the FeO nanoparticles. Using the XPS technique, the presence of 2.49 wt% of Fe (2p), as well as 1.55 wt% of Co (2p), was identified; these elements favoured the band gap reduction from 3.61 to 2.66 eV compared to sodium titanate nanotube (NaTiNT); in addition, they favoured the emergence of emissions associated with the red, yellow, and orange colours, described through PL. The surface area of the composite changed from 197.00 to 210.46 m2 g−1, possibly due to the homogeneous presence of anchored superparamagnetic FeO nanoparticles. Finally, the results were consistent with the proposal for the synthesis of Co-NaTiNT@FeO, which had improvements in its properties, especially its magnetic properties.

Abstract:In the last decade, TiO2 nanotubes have attracted the attention of the scientific community and industry due to their exceptional photocatalytic properties, opening a wide range of additional applications in the fields of renewable energy, sensors, supercapacitors, and the pharmaceutical industry. However, their use is limited because their band gap is tied to the visible light spectrum. Therefore, it is essential to dope them with metals to extend their physicochemical advantages. In this review, we provide a brief overview of the preparation of metal-doped TiO2 nanotubes. We address hydrothermal and alteration methods that have been used to study the effects of different metal dopants on the structural, morphological, and optoelectrical properties of anatase and rutile nanotubes. The progress of DFT studies on the metal doping of TiO2 nanoparticles is discussed. In addition, the traditional models and their confirmation of the results of the experiment with TiO2 nanotubes are reviewed, as well as the use of TNT in various applications and the future prospects for its development in other fields. We focus on the comprehensive analysis and practical significance of the development of TiO2 hybrid materials and the need for a better understanding of the structural-chemical properties of anatase TiO2 nanotubes with metal doping for ion storage devices such as batteries.

Direct nanomechanical characterization of carbon nanotube - titanium interfaces

Abstract:Interfacial interactions between carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and metal matrices play a critical role in the bulk mechanical properties of CNT-reinforced metal matrix nanocomposites (MMNC), but their load-transfer mechanisms remain not well understood. In this paper, we conduct single-nanotube pull-out studies with in situ scanning electron microscopy to quantify the mechanical strength of binding interfaces in carbon nanotube (CNT)-reinforced titanium (Ti) nanocomposites. Our nanomechanical pull-out measurements reveal a shear lag effect in the load transfer on the CNT-Ti interface. The interfacial shear strength and the maximum load-bearing capacity of the tested CNT-Ti interfaces are quantified to be about 37.8 MPa and 245 nN, respectively, both of which are substantially higher than the reported values for CNT-Al interfaces. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the experimentally observed strong CNT-Ti binding interface is attributed to strong chemisorption interactions of Ti atoms on CNT surfaces, albeit moderated by the weakening effect of the oxide layer. The research findings are useful to better understand the load transfer process on the tube-metal interface and the reinforcing mechanism of nanotubes, and ultimately contribute to the optimal design and performance of nanotube-reinforced MMNC.

Abstract:Titanate nanotubes with an outer diameter of ca. 9nm were obtained with hydrothermal method followed by an ion exchange reaction. The as-prepared sample was composed of H2Ti2O4(OH)2, which was thermally unstable. The effect of calcination temperature on its morphology and crystal form was investigated. Based on the results, especially the appearance of lotus-root-like structures, the transformation mechanism was proposed, which involved the dehydrations of intralayered and interlayered OH groups. The decrease in the interlayer distance and the transformation from titanate to anatase were ascribed to the interlayered dehydration, while the destruction of nanotubes into particles was caused by the intralayered one.

Abstract:The structural, dielectric and ferroelectric properties of chemical modified (Ba0.90Ca0.10)0.90(Na0.5Bi0.5)0.10TiO3 (BCT-NBT) ceramics prepared through solid-state reaction technique were investigated. X-ray powder diffraction study shows that bismuth evaporation and titanium excess result in the formation of the secondary nonperovskite phase and the deterioration of the sintering ability. The excessive bismuth and titanium cause the peak dielectric constant (Km) decrease and the temperature of the peak dielectric constant (Tm) shifts to lower temperature in the BCT-NBT systems. The appropriate bismuth oxide as a sintering aid leading to liquid phase sintering causes ceramics densification, increases the room temperature dielectric constant (K) and the remnant polarization (Pr) of BCT-NBT ceramics, and decreases the dielectric loss tangent (tanδ) and the coercive field (Ec) of the BCT-NBT ceramics. However, the excessive titanium causes a slight improvement of tanδ and Ec. These results indicate that this chemical modification is necessary to synthesize BCT-NBT ceramics with better electrical properties in order to realize its practical applications.
Computational Dissection of Two-Dimensional Rectangular Titanium Mononitride TiN: Auxetics and Promises for Photocatalysis

Abstract:Recently, two-dimensional (2D) transition metal nitrides have triggered an enormous interest for their tunable mechanical, optoelectronic, and magnetic properties, significantly enriching the family of 2D materials. Here, by using a broad range of first-principles calculations, we report a systematic study of 2D rectangular materials of titanium mononitride (TiN), exhibiting high energetic and thermal stability due to in-plane d-p orbital hybridization and synergetic out-of-plane electronic delocalization. The rectangular TiN monolayer also possesses enhanced auxeticity and ferroelasticity with an alternating order of Possion's Ratios, stemming from the competitive interactions of intra- and inter-Ti-N chains. Such TiN nanosystem is a n-type metallic conductor with specific tunable pseudogaps. Halogenation of TiN monolayer downshifts the Fermi level, achieving the optical energy gap up to 1.85 eV for TiNCl(Br) sheet. Overall, observed electronic features suggest that the two materials are potential photocatalysts for water splitting application. These results extend emerging phenomena in a rich family 2D transition-metal-based materials and hint for a new platform for the next-generation functional nanomaterials.
First‐Principles Study of the Intrinsic Properties of the fcc/hcp‐Ti Boundary in Carbon Nanotube/Ti Composites Prepared by High‐Pressure Torsion

Abstract:Spherical aberration corrected high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy images reveal that Ti in the carbon‐nanotube‐reinforced‐Ti (CNT/Ti) composites synthesized via the high‐pressure torsion method has a face‐centered cubic (fcc) lattice structure. The intrinsic properties of the fcc/hexagonal close‐packed (hcp)‐Ti boundary with orientation relationships of <math>[111¯]</math>fcc//[0002]hcp and {011}fcc// <math>{21¯1¯0}</math>hcp between the fcc‐Ti and hcp‐Ti were revealed through a first‐ principles investigation. Interface relaxation verifies that the nucleation of the fcc‐Ti structure requires a minimum stable thickness of three atomic layers. When the pressure increases, the interface adhesion work, Wad, of the fcc‐Ti <math>(111¯)</math>/ hcp‐Ti(0002) interface decreases, the surface energy increases, and the interface bonding strength of the fcc/hcp‐Ti boundary decreases.Moreover, the hcp‐Ti(0002)/fcc‐Ti <math>(111¯) </math> boundary becomes unstable under high pressure, enhancing the nucleation and growth of the fcc‐Ti phase at the boundary. The results of this study help in understanding the correlation between the inherent attributes of the fcc/hcp‐Ti boundary and the properties of carbon nanotube titanium composites were improved.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Anatase TiO2 nanotubes were prepared by annealing protonic titanate nanotube precursor. Through galvanostatic investigation, the nanotubes as electrode exhibited high discharge capacity with 314.4 mAh/g in the first cycle and held a larger capacity in continuous cycles compared with normal crystalline TiO2. Up to 100% columbic efficiency hints of the perfect reversibility of lithium intercalation into and extraction from titania nanotubes and consequent extraordinary cycling stability. It is obvious that a titania nanotube electrode possesses large lithium intercalation capacity, high rate capability, and excellent cycling stability. In addition, the capacity decreasing in the first several cycles is investigated by cyclic voltammetric methods. (c) 2005 The Electrochemical Society.
