Abstract:Aluminosilicate ECR-1 zeolite with 12-membered channels was synthesized at 120 degrees C for 4 d in the absence of organic templates. Compared with ECR-1 synthesized at 100 degrees C for 14 d, the crystallization of ECR-1 at 120 degrees C is very fast (4 d), which are reasonably related to their difference in synthesis mechanism (120 degrees C; a spontaneous nucleation process; 100 degrees C : a crystal transformation process). Furthermore, a series of techniques such as IR spectroscopy, N-2 isotherm, SEM, ICP, Si-29 NMR spectroscopy, and catalytic cracking of cymene were used to characterize ECR-1 zeolite. The results show that crystallization of ECR-1 is greatly impacted by the synthesis temperature under organic template-free condition. For its catalytic property, the one dimension channel was the reason for the fast deactivation.

Abstract:A series of ZSM-5/ZSM-11 co-crystalline zeolites with various compositions and morphologies were successfully synthesized via an organic template-free hydrothermal route and characterized by XRD, XRF, SEM, NMR and N2 adsorption/desorption technologies. The effects of raw materials and batch composition were investigated systematically. Various silicon sources can be employed in the organic template-free synthesis of ZSM-5/ZSM-11 co-crystalline zeolite, however only a few types of aluminum sources are available. This organic template-free system is favorable to the aluminum-rich zeolite. With the increase of initial SiO2/Al2O3 ratio, the ZSM-5 percentage in the ZSM-5/ZSM-11 co-crystalline zeolite increases as well as the crystal size, and especially the morphology of ZSM-5/ZSM-11 co-crystalline zeolite prepared from the colloidal silica–NaAlO2 solution system changes gradually from nano-rod aggregation, micro-spindle to single hexagon and then to twinned hexagon crystals. Moreover, Na+ and OH− in the initial materials can promote the nucleation of the ZSM-5/ZSM-11 co-crystalline zeolite significantly and are beneficial to the formation of crystals with relatively low length/width ratio, while K+ postpones the crystallization process seriously.

Abstract:There are a large number of zeolites, such as ITH, that cannot be prepared in the aluminosilicate form. Now, the successful synthesis of aluminosilicate ITH zeolite using a simple cationic oligomer as an organic template is presented. Key to the success is that the cationic oligomer has a strong complexation ability with aluminum species combined with a structural directing ability for the ITH structure similar to that of the conventional organic template. The aluminosilicate ITH zeolite has very high crystallinity, nanosheet-like crystal morphology, large surface area, fully four-coordinated Al species, and abundant acidic sites. Methanol-to-propylene (MTP) tests reveal that the Al-ITH zeolite shows much higher selectivity for propylene and longer lifetime than commercial ZSM-5. FCC tests show that Al-ITH zeolite is a good candidate as a shape-selective FCC additive for enhancing propylene and butylene selectivity.

Abstract:We have demonstrated here for the first time that high-silica ferrierite zeolite, designated as ZJM-2, is successfully synthesized by an induction of CDO-structure zeolite building units in the absence of organic templates. The resulting ZJM-2 has good crystallinity, high surface area, similar crystals shape, only tetrahedral Al3+ species, and abundant acidic sites.

Abstract:A high-silica zeolite with a TON structure designated as ZJM-4 was successfully synthesized in the absence of any organic templates and zeolite seeds. Many factors such as the SiO2/K2O ratio, Si/Al ratio, SiO2/H2O in the starting aluminosilicate gels, crystallization temperature, and crystallization time strongly influence the formation of the ZJM-4 zeolite. Interestingly, this synthesis shows very efficient silica utilization in the starting gels (>80%). Catalytic tests on the isomerization of m-xylene to p-xylene show that the ZJM-4 catalyst has high selectivity to p-xylene (ca. 80%), which could be potentially important for industrial applications for the ZJM-4 zeolite as a candidate catalyst in the future.

Abstract:Germanosilicate zeolites with various structures have been extensively synthesized, but the syntheses of corresponding zeolite structures in the absence of germanium species remain a challenge. One such example is an ITR zeolite structure, which is a twin of the ITH zeolite structure. Through the modification of a classic organic template for synthesizing ITH zeolites and thus designing a new organic template with high compatibility to ITR zeolite assisted by theoretical simulation, we, for the first time, show the Ge-free synthesis of an ITR structure including pure silica, aluminosilicate, and borosilicate ITR zeolites. These materials have high crystallinity, corresponding to an ITR content of more than 95%. In the methanol-to-propylene (MTP) reaction, the obtained aluminosilicate ITR zeolite exhibits excellent propylene selectivity and a long lifetime compared with conventional aluminosilicate ZSM-5 zeolite. The strategy for the design of organic templates might offer a new opportunity for rational syntheses of novel zeolites and, thus, the development of highly efficient zeolite catalysts in the future.

Abstract:A large amount of zeolite structures are still not synthetically available or not available in the form of aluminosilicate currently. Despite significant progress in the development of predictive concepts for zeolite synthesis, accessing some of these new materials is still challenging. One example is the IWR structure as well. Despite successful synthesis of Ge-based IWR zeolites, direct synthesis of aluminosilicate IWR zeolite is still not successful. In this report we show how a suitable organic structure directing agent (OSDA), through modeling of an OSDA/zeolite cage interaction, could access directly the aluminum-containing IWR structure (denoted as COE-6), which might allow access to new classes of materials and thus open opportunities in valuable chemical applications. The experimental results reveal that the COE-6 zeolites with a SiO2/Al2O3 ratio as low as 30 could be obtained. Very interestingly, the COE-6 zeolite has much higher hydrothermal and thermal stabilities than those of the conventional Ge-Al-IWR zeolite. In methanol-to-propylene (MTP) reaction, the COE-6 zeolite exhibits excellent selectivity for propylene, offering a potential catalyst for MTP reaction in the future.

Abstract:As the most important nanoporous material, zeolites, which have intricate micropores, are essential heterogeneous catalysts in industrial processes. Zeolites are generally synthesized with organic templates under hydrothermal conditions; however, this method is environmentally unfriendly and costly due to the formation of harmful gases and polluted water. This article briefly summarizes the role of organic templates and describes designed routes for the organotemplate-free synthesis of zeolites, aided by zeolite seeds and zeolite seeds solution. Furthermore, this review explicates that the micropore volume decreases with an increase of the Si/Al ratios in the organotemplate-free synthesis of zeolite products, where Na+ exists as an alkali cation. This feature is very important in directing the synthesis of zeolite catalysts with controllable Si/Al ratios under organotemplate-free conditions, and is thus important for the efficient design of zeolites.

Abstract:A facile organotemplate-free route has been developed to synthesize an aluminophosphate molecular sieve in an alkali metal-containing system under hydrothermal conditions. The as-prepared JU93 possesses AEN zeotype topology with small 8-ring pores, and its derivatives show ion conductivity and adsorption selectivity of CO2 over CH4.

Current Opinion in Green and Sustainable Chemistry

Abstract:Green and sustainable synthesis of zeolites has been continuously developed because of the requirement of environmental concerns. Among these efforts, it is very successful for organotemplate-free synthesis of aluminophosphate and silicoaluminophosphate molecular sieves and pure silica zeolites. In general, for the synthesis of aluminophosphate-based molecular sieves and many aluminosilicate zeolites, it is necessary to use organic templates, resulting in the formation of a huge amount of polluted wastes, which are environmentally unfriendly. In 2008, we show first example for organotemplate-free synthesis of aluminosilicate Beta, where the organic template of tetraethylammonium hydroxide in the conventional synthesis is completely avoided. However, it still has a challenge for organotemplate-free synthesis of other important aluminophosphate-based molecular sieves and pure silica zeolites. In this short review, it is briefly summarized recent advances in organotemplate-free synthesis of aluminophosphate and silicoaluminophosphate molecular sieves and pure silica zeolites, which are green and sustainable compared with those synthesized in the presence of organic templates.
