Abstract:A new series of visible-light-driven photocatalysts M3V2O8 (M = Mg, Ni, Zn) was synthesized by theconventional solid-state reaction method. Photocatalytic properties were evaluated by O-2 evolution from an aqueous AgNO3 solution under visible light irradiation. The results showed that the three compounds of M3V2O8 (M = Mg, Ni, Zn) were all crystallized in an orthorhombic system with the space group Abam. However, the substitution of M2+ cations with different electronic states imposed significant effects on their photophysical and photocatalytic properties. Zn3V2O8 showed a higher activity than Mg3V2O8, while Ni3V2O8 showed almost no activity. Theoretically calculated energy band structures and density of states (DOS) by the plane-wave-density function theory (DFT) revealed that the different photophysical and photocatalytic properties of M3V1O8 (M = Mg, Ni, Zn) could be ascribed to their different electronic structures. The Zn 3d and O 2p orbitals were hybridized to construct the valence band of Zn3V2O8, favoring the mobility of photoexcited holes in the valence band and thus promoting the O-2 evolution activity. In contrast, no such hybridization effect occurs in Mg3V2O8 as the Mg 2p orbitals are not involved in the valence band. The split Ni 3d orbitals inserted between the O 2p and the V 3d orbitals in Ni3V2O8 are not suitable for O-2 evolution.

Abstract:Photocatalytic O2 evolution from aqueous AgNO3 solution with M3V2O8(M = Mg, Zn) was carried out under visible light irradiation. The M3V2O8powder samples synthesized by a solid-state reaction method were characterized by X-ray diffraction and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. M3V2O8had similar crystal structures and band gaps. However, the photocatalytic activity of O2evolution for Zn3V2O8was much higher than that for Mg3V2O8. It was suggested that the Zn-3d orbital hybridized with the O-2p orbital in constructing the valence band of Zn3V2O8, whereas there was no such hybridization involving in the valence band of Mg3V2O8. The different photocatalytic properties could be ascribed to their different electronic structures.

Abstract:A new series of visible light-driven photocatalysts M2.5VMoO8 (M = Mg, Zn) crystallized in the orthorhombic crystal system were synthesized by a solid-state reaction method. The photophysical and photocatalytic properties of M2.5VMoO8 (M = Mg, Zn) under visible light irradiation were examined. It was found that efficient O2 was evolved from aqueous AgNO3 solution dispersed with the M2.5VMoO8 (M = Mg, Zn) powder samples synthesized under visible light irradiation. The electronic band structures of M2.5VMoO8 (M = Mg, Zn) were discussed in regard to the corresponding photocatalytic properties.

Abstract:Bi2MNbO7(M=Al3+,Ga3+,In3+) solid photocatalysts were prepared by solid-state reaction and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction and Rietveld structure refinement. These photocatalysts crystallize in the same pyrochlore structure, but the lattice parameters decrease with decrease of M3+(M3+=Al3+,Ga3+,In3+) ionic radii. The band gaps of Bi2MNbO7(M=Al3+,Ga3+,In3+) were estimated to be about 2.9, 2.75 and 2.7 eV, respectively. The difference in the band gaps of the photocatalysts is due to their different conduction band levels, resulting in the difference in photocatalytic activity of the photocatalysts.

Abstract:A novel visible driven Mg–Zn–In ternary layered photocatalytic materials were synthesized, for the first time, by the isomorphous replacement of Zn for Mg in coprecipitation system. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and N2 adsorption/desorption isothermal technique reveal that this ternary photocatalytic material possesses nano-sheet morphology and high crystallinity as well as hierarchy mesoporous structure. UV–vis spectroscopy confirms that the isomorphous replacement of Zn for Mg results in a significant red shift adsorption of the calcined Mg–Zn–In LDHs toward visible light region. The calcined Mg–Zn–In LDHs samples possess a high photocatalytic activity of 98% in degradation of an organic dye methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiation, for which the possible photocatalytic mechanisms are discussed. Moreover, this ternary layered photocatalytic material exhibits satisfactory re-usability after three cycles and a strong structural “memory effect” even after calcined at temperature of 800°C. The higher photocatalysis activity under visible light irradiation and facilitate synthesis process enable this ternary layered material to be a promising candidate in utilization of renewable energy for environmental remediation.

Abstract:Ag2Mo3O10 center dot 1.8H(2)O with a relatively narrow bandgap of 2.69 eV was used to construct an AgI/Ag2Mo3O10 center dot 1.8H(2)O photocatalyst which was found to be more active than AgI and Ag2Mo3O10 center dot 1.8H(2)O in photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes under visible light. The physical and chemical properties of related catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), N-2 adsorption-desorption, diffuse reflectance UV-Vis spectroscopy, photocurrent measurements, photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Through relevant characterization, radical-capturing experiments, and electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments using 5,5-dimethyl-l-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO) to detect hydroxyl radicals (center dot OH) and superoxide radicals (center dot O-2(-)), the enhanced activities of AgI/Ag2Mo3O10 center dot 1.8H(2)O was explained.

Abstract:The effective utilization of near-infrared (NIR) light for energy conversion and environmental remediation has been considered as a promising approach to alleviate energy shortage and environmental pollution. The plasmonic MoO3-x and WO3-x (MO3-x (M = Mo, W)) show tremendous potential in the utilization of NIR light owing to their localized surface plasmon resonance effect (LSPR). In consequence, MO3-x (M = Mo, W) are considered to be promising NIR light-driven catalysts. In addition, MO3-x (M = Mo, W) also hold other outstanding advantages, such as high carrier mobility, low cost, low toxicity, good stability, and easy preparation, which make them show great potential in the field of photocatalysis. In this work, various synthetic methods for MO3-x (M = Mo, W) photocatalysts are summarized for the first time. Then, the modifications to further strengthen light absorption, accelerate charge transfer, and promote surface catalytic reaction are discussed. Subsequently, the applications of NIR light-driven MO3-x (M = Mo, W) photocatalysts in energy conversion and environmental remediation are reviewed. Finally, the development prospect and primary challenge of MO3-x (M = Mo, W) based materials in future research are discussed. This work aims at providing a comprehensive understanding of NIR light-driven MO3-x (M = Mo, W) in term of synthesis, modification, and application, thereby further promoting their development.

Abstract:A series of novel Bi2MoO6/zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) photocatalysts have been successfully fabricated through a facile self-assembly process. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-vis spectrophotometry, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterized pure Bi2MoO6, pure ZIF-8, and a series of Bi2MoO6/ZIF-8 composites. The result indicated that, when compared with pure Bi2MoO6, the composite of Bi2MoO6/ZIF-8 exhibited excellent photocatalytic performance for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) under visible light. Moreover, the Bi2MoO6/ZIF-8-3 composite (the molar ratio of Bi2MoO6 to 2-MI is 3:3) has optimum photocatalytic performance because of the suitable amount of ZIF-8 decorated on the flower-like Bi2MoO6. The enhanced photocatalytic activity is probably due to the introduction of ZIF-8, which will promote the separation of electron–hole pair and the surface morphology. Benefitting from the diversity of the MOF species (ZIF-8 is one of them), this composing strategy of Bi2MoO6/MOF composite would provide new insight into the design of highly efficient visible light photocatalysts.

Abstract:A visible-light-responsive MgO/ZnO/In2O3 mixed-metal oxide (MZI-MMO) heterostructured photocatalyst was derived from a Mg-containing ternary hydrotalcite-like precursor followed by controllable calcination. The photocatalysts were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and specific surface area measurements. The findings indicated that a single layered double hydroxide (LDH) precursor leads to a well-crystalline ternary oxide photocatalyst. The photocatalyst showed superior catalytic performance for the photodegradation of organic dye compared to a commercial P25 photocatalyst driven by visible light. MgO/ZnO/In2O3 heterojunctions were observed on the interfaces by HRTEM, which could play a vital role in enhancing photocatalytic performance. The role of MgO was discussed based on a possible inhibition of photo-generated carrier recombination during the photocatalytic degradation. The photo-generated electrons can be transferred through the conduction band of oxides and be effectively involved in the formation of radical O 2 - , confirmed by using radical scavengers. The radical O 2 - is mainly responsible for the photodegradation of methylene blue (MB). Furthermore, the MgO/ZnO/In2O3 photocatalysts possess excellent recycling performance with a negligible activity loss after a four-run use. The kinetic studies suggested that the degradation of MB complies with a pseudo-first-order kinetic behavior.
Enhanced Visible-Active Photocatalytic Behaviors Observed in Mn-doped BiFeO3

Abstract:A series of BiFeO3 and BiFe[Formula: see text]Mn[Formula: see text]O3 (x = 0, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08, 0.10) were synthesized by a hydrothermal method. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and their photocatalytic activity was studied by photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue in aqueous solution under visible light irradiation. The band gap of BiFeO3 was significantly decreased from 2.26 eV to 1.90 eV with the doping of Mn. Furthermore, the 6% Mn-doped BiFeO3 photocatalyst exhibited the best activity with a degradation rate of 94% after irradiation for 100 min. The enhanced photocatalytic activity with Mn doping could be attributed to the enhanced optical absorption, increment of surface reactive sites and reduction of electron–hole recombination. Our results may be conducive to design more efficient photocatalysts responsive to visible light among narrow band gap semiconductors.

Abstract:A series of M–BiVO4 (M=Ag, Co, and Ni) particles were successfully prepared by amorphous heteronuclear complex precursor. The particles were characterized using X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and Raman spectra. The results showed that the crystallized M–BiVO4 had a monoclinic phase with the hybrid metals, namely Co and Ni being attached on BiVO4 particles in the form of oxides mainly. The M–BiVO4 photocatalysts were responsive to visible light. Photodegradation of both methyl blue and 2,4-dichlorophenol over M–BiVO4 composites was observed at wavelength >420nm. Co–BiVO4 exhibited the best photocatalytic efficiency, with a decoloration percent of about 85% after 2-h irradiation (at λ>420nm). Nearly 90% of 2,4-dichlorophenol was removed in 5h. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) study confirmed that superoxide and hydroxide radicals were formed under light irradiation and might be responsible for the degradation of the organic compound.

Abstract:Magnesium-vanadium oxides have attracted significant attention owing to their promising optical and catalytic properties. Here, experimental and first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) were combined to examine the electronic, optical, lattice dynamical, and thermodynamic properties of the magnesium pyrovanadate (Mg2V2O7) and magnesium orthovanadate (Mg3V2O8). We first prepare high-purity polycrystalline Mg2V2O7 and Mg3V2O8 crystals using the solid-state reaction method. The good agreement between experimental and theoretical results indicate that these two compounds are ideal candidates for photocatalysts or optoelectronic devices. The lattice dynamics are revealed by Raman spectroscopy and phonon dispersion curves. The thermodynamic properties over a wide range of temperatures were also obtained. This study not only promotes the functional applications of Mg2V2O7 and Mg3V2O8 compounds but also highlights a guidance for understanding the thermodynamic phase diagram of magnesium-vanadium oxides.

Abstract:The photocatalytic activity of pure Mn3O4 and silver (Ag) modified Mn3O4 nanoparticles have been investigated. The nanoparticles were prepared by using co-precipitation technique. The structural analysis showed that the Ag modified Mn3O4 was successfully synthesized. For instance, a slight shift to lower angle of XRD pattern was observed after Ag doping. Morphological analysis revealed that the particles have an average size of 274 nm, 287 nm and 321 nm for pure, 1% and 3% Ag modified Mn3O4 respectively. The UV-Visible analysis indicated that the bandgap of Mn3O4 decreased with increased Ag content and the band gap is 1.4 eV with the 3% of Ag content. The spectra obtained from DRS were also evaluated through inverse logarithmic derivative method (ILD) to counter check the bandgap values. 3% Ag-modified photocatalysts exhibited the enhanced decolorization efficiency compared to pure Mn3O4 nanoparticles. The pseudo first order kinetic model is used to explain the photocatalytic kinetics of the photocatalyst. The rate constant values are 0.01/min, 0.017/min and 0.024/min for pure Mn3O4, 1% Ag and 3% Ag modified Mn3O4 nanoparticles, respectively.

Abstract:First-principles density functional investigations of the structural, electronic, optical and thermodynamic properties of K3VO4, Na3VO4 and Zn3V2O8 were performed using generalized gradient approximation (GGA) via ultrasoft pseudopotential and density functional theory (DFT). Their electronic structure was analyzed with a focus on the nature of electronic states near band edges. The electronic band structure revealed that between 6% Fe and 6% Co, 6% Co significantly tuned the band gap with the emergence of new states at the gamma point. Notable variations were highlighted in the electronic properties of Na3V(1-x)Fe x O4, Na3V(1-x)Co x O4, K3V(1-x)Fe x O4, K3V(1-x)Co x O4, Zn3(1-x)V2(1-x)Co x O8 and Zn3(1-x)V2(1-x)Fe x O8 (where x = 0.06) due to the different natures of the unoccupied 3d states of Fe and Co. Density of states analysis as well as α (spin up) and β (spin down) magnetic moments showed that cobalt can reduce the band gap by positioning the valence band higher than O 2p orbitals and the conduction band lower than V 3d orbitals. Mulliken charge distribution revealed the presence of the 6s2 lone pair on Zn, greater population and short bond length in V-O bonds. Hence, the hardness and covalent character develops owing to the V-O bond. Elastic properties, including bulk modulus, shear modulus, Pugh ratio and Poisson ratio, were computed and showed Zn3V2O8 to be mechanically more stable than Na3VO4 and K3VO4. Optimal values of optical properties, such as absorption, reflectivity, dielectric function, refractive index and loss functions, demonstrated Zn3V2O8 as an efficient photocatalytic compound. The optimum trend within finite temperature ranges utilizing quasi-harmonic technique is illustrated by calculating thermodynamic parameters. Theoretical investigations presented here will open up a new line of exploration of the photocatalytic characteristics of orthovanadates.
Synthesis and Characterization of the Zno/Mpg-C3n4 Heterojunction Photocatalyst with Enhanced Visible Light Photoactivity

Abstract:The ZnO/mpg-C3N4 composite photocatalyst with high visible light activity was successfully synthesized by a facile solvothermal method and characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The results indicated that ZnO particles dispersed uniformly on the mpg-C3N4 sheet. The photocatalytic activity of ZnO/mpg-C3N4 for photodegradation of MB was much higher than that of pure mpg-C3N4 both under the visible light and simulated solar irradiation. The optimal ZnO content for the photocatalytic activity of the ZnO/mpg-C3N4 composites is 24.9%, which is almost 2.3 times as high as that of pure mpg-C3N4 under visible light, and 1.9 times higher than that under simulated solar irradiation. The enhancement in photocatalytic activity should be assigned to the effective separation and transfer of photogenerated charges coming from the well-matched overlapping band-structure between mpg-C3N4 and ZnO. Radical trap experiments show that both ZnO/mpg-C3N4 composites and mpg-C3N4 have the same photodegradation mechanism, and the holes are their main oxidative species for MB degradation.
