Abstract:Novel axially chiral ligands have been designed and synthesized by merging the chelating picolinic acid with substituted BINOLs. Abstract:An enantioselective one-pot Michael/Michael/Henry/hemiacetalization reaction between alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes, alpha-ketoamides, and nitroalkenes under mild conditions catalyzed by a diarylprolinol silyl ether has been developed. The sequential methodology provides a direct approach to a wide range of fully substituted chiral oxabicyclo[2.2.2]octanes with seven contiguous stereocenters in moderate to excellent yields (up to 99%), high to excellent diastereoselectivities (up to >25:1 dr), and high to excellent enantioselectivities (up to 99% ee).

Abstract:A wide range of isoquinoline ring-modified Quinap oxides with different steric and electronic variations have been constructed through a palladium-catalyzed imidoylative cyclization of arylethenyl isocyanides with 2-diphenylphosphinyl-1-naphthyl bromides. The Pd-catalysis plays dual roles in the formation of both axial C–C bond and isoquinoline ring. This de novo synthetic strategy features good functional group tolerance, high yields and easy scale-up, providing Quinap derivatives with substitution patterns that could not be obtained using coupling reactions. Chiral ligands 7 and 12 can be readily prepared by transformation of the resulting Quinap oxide to their BINOL esters, and have been proven to be superb chiral ligands for the copper-catalyzed enantioselective A3-coupling and alkynylation of quinoline reactions. In general, the enantioselectivies obtained using ligands 7 and 12 are excellent, and the ee values are higher than those using Quinap as ligand, even three times higher in some cases. Mechanism studies revealed that a monomeric copper(I) complex bearing a single chiral ligand was formed and served as the catalytically active species.

Abstract:An efficient synthesis of the enantiomerically pure 3,3'-bis-arylated BINOLs is accomplished through decarboxylative iodination of the dimethyl ether derivative of BINOL-3,3'-dicarboxylic acid followed by Suzuki-Miyaura coupling using a one-pot protocol. The decarboxylative iodination is effected with the dimethyl ether derivative of BINOL-3,3'-dicarboxylic acid using iodine as a terminal oxidant and the cheaply available K3PO4 as a base under neat conditions. This protocol facilitated the introduction of the aryl group at the 3,3'-position on the binaphthyl system using aryl boronic acid through a palladium-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction.

Abstract:(S)-3,3′-F2-BINOL has been synthesized for the first time and demonstrated as a highly active organocatalyst for asymmetric methallylation of ketones. Up to 98:2 enantioselectivity and 99% yield were obtained with 5 mol % catalyst loading. The catalyst (S)-3,3′-F2-BINOL could be easily recovered and reused.

Abstract:Seven-membered N, O-ligands containing ketone and pyrrole have been designed and synthesized via a facile method using organocatalyst, piperidinium acetate or L-proline. Their photophysical properties including absorption and emission spectra have been investigated in eight kinds of different polar solvents. DFT and TD-DFT calculations have also been carried out to further demonstrate the geometric structures and illuminate their extraordinary photochemical properties. The calculations show that ESIPT process is prohibited in both compounds NOAB-1, 2 which is confirmed by experiment and calculation due to its stable ketone structure.

Abstract:A highly efficient and practical resolution of racemic 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol (BINOL) has been achieved through molecular complexation with N-benzylcinchoninium chloride, which can be readily prepared in 85% yield using an improved procedure through the reaction of cinchonine with benzyl chloride in dimethylformamide (DMF). It is found that the absolute configuration of BINOL included in the molecular crystals is R, which is the same as in the case of using N-benzylcinchonidinium chloride. This result is discussed in terms of molecular recognition in the solid state. X-Ray structural analysis of molecular crystal formed between (R)-BINOL and N-benzylcinchoninium chloride indicates that the additive effect of the chiral features of the host, the interaction pattern between the functional groups of the host and guest, and the complementary molecular packing in the crystal lattice dominates the stereochemistry of the guest in the molecular crystal. Abstract:A new method for optical resolution of racemic 1,1′-bi-2-naphthol (BINOL) has been developed through molecular complexation with a cheap and readily accessible (S)-5-oxopyrrolidine-2-carboxanilide, affording the enantioenriched BINOL in up to 70.4% ee and 73.6% yield. X-Ray structural analysis of a molecular crystal formed between (R)-BINOL and (S)-5-oxopyrrolidine-2-carboxanilide indicates that the hydrogen bonding interactions between the carbonyl groups of amides and the hydroxyl groups of (R)-BINOL predominate in the molecular complex formation. The chiral features of the amide and the complementary molecular packing in the crystal lattice control the stereochemistry of the guest in the molecular crystal.

Abstract:The development of recyclable catalysts has gained more attention in recent years in order to minimize the environmental effect and the overall cost of catalytic processes. Some of the most broadly used chiral organocatalysts are BINOL-derived chiral phosphoric acids, making it necessary to develop efficient recycling strategies. While literature reports require up to 13 synthetic steps to access recyclable chiral phosphoric acids, here we report a general and concise 9-step approach to anthracene decorated heterogeneous chiral phosphoric acids (PS-Anth), which have shown high performance either in batch or continuous flow without observing catalyst degradation.

Abstract:We herein report that the highly hydrophobic ether 4‐MeTHP constitutes a promising resource for the development of sustainable synthetic methodologies grounded on the use of organometallic reagents. The beneficial effects of 4‐MeTHP as reaction media are illustrated in the organolithium‐promoted anionic ortho‐Fries rearrangement of 1,1'‐bi‐2‐naphthol (BINOL)‐based carbamates under bench‐type conditions. The use of 4‐MeTHP induces a remarkable and unexpected stability of the organolithiums species, enabling the efficient preparation of chiral (bis)carboxamide catalysts. Furthermore, superior performances of 4‐MeTHP than other environmentally responsible solvents are observed using the synthesized BINOL catalysts in the asymmetric addition of organozinc reagents to aldehydes. Spectroscopic studies in solution suggest that 4‐MeTHP plays a key role in these reactions by inducing the preferential formation of a reactive monomeric dinuclear complex. This methodology allows for the asymmetric assembly of enantioenriched secondary alcohols in good yields and high stereoselectivity, working at 0 °C and under air.

Abstract:A novel approach for efficient synthesis of chiral C,O-chelated BINOL/gold(III) complexes by diastereomeric resolution using enantiopure BINOL as chiral resolving agent was demonstrated. The BINOL/gold(III) diastereomers with different solubility were separated by simple filtration, providing optically pure BINOL/gold(III) complexes with up to >99:1 dr. Combining with the efficient BINOL ligand dissociation process, a simple and column-free method for chiral resolution of racemic gold(III) dichloride complexes in gram scale was established, giving their enantiopure forms in good yields. Conversely, the resolved enantiopure gold(III) dichloride complexes could serve as chiral resolving agent to resolve disubstituted BINOL derivatives, achieving both BINOLs and gold(III) complexes in good to excellent yields (overall 77 – 96% and 76 – 95%, respectively) with high optical purity up to 99% ee. Through a consecutive chirality transfer process, the chiral information from an inexpensive chiral source was transferred to highly valuable gold(III) complexes followed by the sterically bulky BINOL derivatives. This work would open a new synthetic strategy facilitating the development of structurally diverse chiral gold(III) complexes and gold(III)-mediated chiral resolution of BINOL derivatives. In addition, this new class of C,O-chelated BINOL/gold(III) complexes achieved asymmetric carboalkoxylation of ortho-alkynylbenzaldehydes in excellent enantioselectivity up to 99% ee.
