Abstract:10% mol SmI3 catalysed the Friedel–Crafts acylation of aromatic ethers by acyl chlorides in acetonitrile with the yields of 48–82%. Reactions of various substituted aromatic ethers with acyl chloride were studied. The structures of compounds were established by IR and 1H NMR. The main product obtained with anisole is the para-substituted compound with only a trace (<5 %) of meta and ortho substituted products. This shows that the acylation of aromatic ethers is highly regioselective in the presence of SmI3, a pattern repeated with the other aromatic ethers used.

Abstract:The venerable Friedel-Crafts reaction appends alkyl or acyl groups to aromatic rings through alkyl or acyl cation equivalents typically generated by Lewis acids. We show that phenyl cation equivalents, generated from otherwise unreactive aryl fluorides, allow extension of the Friedel-Crafts reaction to intramolecular aryl couplings. The enabling feature of this reaction is the exchange of carbon-fluorine for silicon-fluorine bond enthalpies; the reaction is activated by an intermediate silyl cation. Catalytic quantities of protons or silyl cations paired with weakly coordinating carborane counterions initiate the reactions, after which proton transfer in the final aromatization step regenerates the active silyl cation species by protodesilylation of a quaternary silane. The methodology allows the high-yield formation of a range of tailored polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and graphene fragments.

Abstract:Various indoles undergo Friedel–Crafts alkylation at the 3-position when treated with secondary arylmethyl acetates in the presence of trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate (TMSOTf) and 2,6-lutidine. Tertiary benzylic alcohols are also effective alkylating agents, undergoing TMSOTf-promoted activation to yield alkylated indoles that feature quaternary centers. A related study shows that benzofuran reacts under similar conditions to yield 2-alkylated benzofurans when treated with similar alkylating agents, and the reaction has been extended to include other representative heteroarenes. Yields for these Friedel–Crafts alkylation products range from 43%–99% over a wide range of substrate combinations.

Abstract:This work reports aromatic ketones production by a solid acid made of divinylbenzene-vinylimidazole modified with 1,3-propanesultone and trifluoromethanesulfonate. The catalyst exhibited excellent conversion and selectivity for anisole to p-methoxyacetophenone with the acylating agent acetic anhydride. Abstract:A cost-effective and environmentally compliance FeCl3·6H2O catalyzed Friedel-Crafts alkylation of cyclic ketene dithioacetals with alcohols was developed. The reaction was efficient in the presence of catalyst loading as low as 5%(molar fraction) in CH2Cl2 solvent at room temperature or under reflux conditions. A wide range of alkylated ketene dithioacetals were synthesized in excellent yields.

Abstract:The development of new, more efficient Friedel-Crafts arylation methodologies that provide access to 1,1- diarylalkanes is an important objective of interest for the production of pharmaceuticals and fine chemical products. In this regard, this study introduces a novel synthetic route to 1,1-diarylalkanes conducted in the Deep Eutectic Solvent (DES) 3FeCl3 · 6H2O/Gly, which serves as both a reaction medium and promoter. Under these conditions, Friedel-Crafts benzylations of various arenes bearing activating and deactivating ortho-/para-directing groups, can be performed using diverse benzylating reagents such as styrenes, alcohols, acetates, ethers, and chlorides. Importantly, highly electronically deactivated electrophiles, including those with CF3 and NO2 groups, are suitable substrates. This methodology provides a wide range of asymmetric 1,1-diarylalkanes (up to 124 examples) with generally good yields and high regioselectivities. The efficacy of this approach was demonstrated with the multigram-scale synthesis (10 mmol) of 1-phenyl-1-xylyl ethane (PXE), a liquid with great industrial applicability. Moreover, the Fe(III)-based DES could be reused for a minimum of 20 consecutive cycles with no appreciable erosion of the yields.

Abstract:In general, Friedel-Crafts reaction is incompatible with amines due to the Lewis acidity of the catalysts. Recently, we reported that cyclic diaminocarbene-Gold(I) can be used as catalyst for the Friedel-Crafts alkylation between aromatic amines and alkenes. Herein, a systematically theoretical research was performed on this rare Friedel-Crafts reaction. The adopted calculation method is accurate enough to reproduce the crystal structure of the catalyst. It was found that the reactions followed the electrophilic aromatic substitution mechanism. The gold cation can activate the C=C double bond and generate the electrophilic group which can be attacked by the aromatic ring. The para-product is more energy favorable which agrees well with the experimental results. The reaction of α-methylstyrene follows the Markovnikov rule, and the activation energy to generate the branched product of methylstyrene is lower than that producing the linear product. However, the reaction of butanone follows the anti-Markovnikov rule, and the activation energy to generate the branched product of butanone is higher than that producing the linear product. These calculation results reveal the mechanism of this new Friedel-Crafts reaction. It can well explain the high para-selectivity and the substrate-dependent of the product structures in the experiment.

Abstract:In the presence of catalytic amount of bismuth(III) chloride, the reactions of acyl chlorides or vinyl chlorides with arenes afforded 1,1-diarylatkenes in 25-82% isolated yield. In the case of the reaction of acyl chlorides with arenes, the procedure includes an initial Friedel-Crafts acylation, subsequent formation of vinyl chlorides and final Friedel-Crafts-type vinylation of another arene molecule with vinyl chloride. This paper reports the first Lewis acid-catalyzed cleavage of the C-Cl bond of vinyl chloride and its application in the synthesis of multiply subtituted alkenes.

Abstract:MCM-41 molecular sieve supported tungstosilicic acid(SiW)/zirconia catalysts(SiW/ ZrO2/M) were prepared through impregnation and characterized by means of XRD,N2 adsorptiondesorption,DSC,FTIR and NH3-TPD.Their catalytic activities in the Friedel-Crafts acylation of anisole with acetic anhydride were investigated and compared to those of SiW directly supported on MCM-41(SiW/M) and bulk SiW.The effects of the interactions between ZrO2,SiW and the support on their catalytic activities were studied.The results showed that the catalytic activity of SiW/M was lower than that of bulk SiW,due to the distortion of SiW Keggin structure caused by the interaction between SiW and the support.However,when SiW was supported on ZrO2-grafted MCM-41,an obvious increase in catalytic activity was observed,which could be attributed to the increase of strong acidic sites on the catalyst surface due to the fine dispersion of SiW on the support and the interaction between SiW and ZrO2.The optimal preparation conditions for the SiW/ZrO2/M catalyst were:ZrO2 loading of 20%(w),SiW loading of 60%(w) and calcination temperature of 200 ℃.The optimal acylation reaction conditions were: reaction temperature of 110 ℃,reaction time of 4 h,catalyst dosage of 0.2 g(based on 10 mmol acetic anhydride),and mole ratio of anisole to acetic anhydride of 10.

Abstract:Numerous efforts have been dedicated to develop solid acid catalysts with higher activity and stability replacing the homogeneous catalysis for Friedel-Crafts (FC) acylation reaction. In this study, single- to multiple-layer MWW zeolites are employed as well-defined model catalysts to investigate the influencing mechanism of microscale structure of MWW zeolites on the kinetics for acylation of anisole with acetic anhydride. It is found that the acylation of anisole is solely carried out on the external acid sites of MWW zeolites and follows Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism. The single-layer MWW (SL-MWW) with more external acid sites exhibits lower catalytic activity for acylation of anisole in batch reaction, whereas the recycle stability of SL-MWW is clearly higher than that of multiple-layer MWW (ML-MWW). Kinetics results reveal that a large equilibrium constant of product adsorption together with the confinement effect within 12MR pockets on surface of SL-MWW results in difficult desorption of product and small rate constant. Therefore, the favorable mass-transfer and diffusion of SL-MWW is restrained in batch reaction and at low temperature condition. Based on these findings, the continuous flow fixed-bed process under an elevated temperature (493 K) was conducted to underline the structural advantages of SL-MWW zeolite. The lifetime of SL-MWW can reach to 300 h in the optimal reaction conditions, which is potential catalyst for industrial application in the field of FC acylation reactions.

Abstract:The Friedel-Crafts reaction of alkalinous substrates is challenging because of the coordination between amines and traditional acid catalysts. Based on theoretical research, we designed a catalytic process for the Friedel-Crafts reactions ofN,N-dialkylanilines in the presence of CAAC-CuCl [CAAC = cyclic(alkyl)(amino)carbene] and KB(C6F5)(4). Experimental results show that the catalytic system is suitable for a series ofN,N-dialkylanilines and styrenes with good to excellent yields ofpara-selectivity products. The results are comparable to those obtained in carbene-gold catalyzed processes.

Abstract:A highly efficient and selective intramolecular Friedel-Crafts reaction of 3-methylbutyl or 4-methylpentyl-substituted aromatics has been developed using a carbocation relay strategy through selective sp 3 C-H bond activation, providing a facile and cost-effective approach for the construction of benzocyclic compounds. A variety of 1,1-dimethylindane and naphthalene derivatives have been prepared from very simple starting materials in good yields with high selectivity. The present strategy has provided a new example of a Friedel-Crafts reaction with alkanes as the alkylating component and constitutes a convenient approach to selective C-H bond activation and functionalization of alkane derivatives.

Abstract:Since the initial report, the Friedel–Crafts reaction has become a powerful tool to functionalize arenes. Nevertheless, the use of nitrogen heterocycles as electrophiles in Friedel‐Crafts reactions has been less explored. Here, we show a Friedel–Crafts‐like reaction of electron‐rich arenes with quinazolin‐4(3H)‐ones, enabling late‐stage C2–H arylation of quinazolin‐4(3H)‐ones via triflic anhydride (Tf2O) activation. A series of substrates can be efficiently coupled under mild reaction conditions, affording C(sp3)‐C(sp2) coupling product 2‐aryl dihydroquinazolinones that can be further converted into the corresponding quinazolinone in the presence of base. This methodology offers efficient access to 2‐aryl quinazolin‐4(3H)‐ones and exhibits good functional group compatibility and site selectivity. Mechanistic investigations reveal the formation of highly electrophilic iminium intermediates upon Tf2O activation of quinazolin‐4(3H)‐ones, which serve as the key reactive species, enabling the Friedel‐Crafts reaction to proceed efficiently.

Abstract:Important organic reactions require the use of catalysts. The Friedel-Crafts reactions were discovered by Charles Friedel and James Mason Crafts in 1887. They are an essential catalytic process since they are widely applied in different areas such as fuels, cleaning, and pharmacological products. The reaction is usually carried out in the presence of Lewis acids or Brønsted acids in a homogeneous medium, with the nucleophilic aromatic substrate in excess. Although there is still work in the literature on the Friedel- Crafts reaction in a homogeneous medium using metal halides, the tendency is to replace these catalysts, which generate effluents that are harmful to the environment. Heterogeneous catalysts using solid acids show advantages over homogeneous catalysts, especially concerning separating products from the reaction medium, recycling, and reusing. This paper presents a mini-review focusing on the use of solid acids in Friedel-Crafts reactions.
