Abstract:The layer structured crystals beta-MNCl (M = Zr, Hf) consist of rhombohedrally stacked six-layer [Cl-M-N-N-M-Cl] slabs, each of which is composed of a strongly bonded honeycomb-like double MN layer sandwiched by two close-packed chlorine layers. A part of the chlorine atoms was deintercalated by the reaction with alkali metals (A) formed by the thermal decomposition of the azides AN(3) (A = Na, K, Rb). Upon the partial deintercalation of chlorine atoms, electrons were doped into the MN layers, and the semiconducting P-MNCl changed into superconductors with the transition temperatures (Tc's) of 13-14 and 23-24 K for M = Zr and Hf, respectively. The thermal stability and the structure of the deintercalated phase beta-MNCl1-x are discussed.
New electron-doping method for layer-structured crystals of beta-MNCl (M = Zr, Hf) and their properties

Abstract:Layer-structured crystals of beta-MNCl (M = Zr, Hf) have been electron-doped successfully by reactions with alkali metal azides RN3 (R = Li, Na, K, Rb), the amounts of which were controlled with the molar ratios of azides to beta-MNCl. The prepared compounds show superconductivity with transition temperatures ( T-cs) at 13.5 K for beta-ZrNCl and 23.5 K for beta-HfNCl. The results of the experiments showed that the sample obtained from the reaction with the molar ratio of x = n (NaN3) / n (beta-ZrNCl) = 0.3 was bulk superconductor. The mechanisms of reactions and electron-doping were studied tentatively by the results of XRD, TEM and SQUID measurements. The stability of the obtained superconductors in air was also investigated.

Abstract:Layer-structured crystals of beta-MNCl (M = Zr, Hf) could be electron-doped by reactions with different alkali metal azides RN3 (R = Li, Na, K, Rb), and controlling the amounts with the molar ratios of azides to beta-MNCl. All the prepared compounds show superconductivity with the same transition temperatures at 13.5 K for ZrNCl and 23.5 K for beta-HfNCl. However the different alkali metal azides RN3 show different reactivity with beta-MNCl, and the properties of the products such as superconducting fractions, the lattice constant, and stability against thermal or air, are very dependent on the kinds of alkali metals used. Based on the the results of SQUID measurements, it can be concluded that NaN3 and KN3 are the best react agents for beta-ZrNCl and beta-HfNCl respectively.

Abstract:A single crystal of ZrNF has been successfully prepared by the high-temperature and high-pressure method. The crystals had the plate-like habit and was colorless and transparent. Unlike the layer structured β-ZrNX (X=Cl, Br, I) crystals prepared by the same method, which consist of ZrN double layers sandwiched between close-packed halogen layers the ZrNF crystal had superstructures with a 5-fold a-axis. Furthermore, we have unexpectedly found that the ZrNF crystal shows weak ferromagnetic with the Curie temperature Tc as high as 120 K.
Metal Substitution Effect on Superconductivity in Barium Intercalated Ternary Metal Nitride Chlorides

Abstract:We systematically studied barium cointercalated ternary metal nitride chloride superconductors of Ba-0.8(NH3)(y)Zr1-xHfxNCl (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1). X-ray diffraction and Raman spectra measurements show a systematical evolution of lattice constants and lattice dynamics upon Hf replacement for Zr. The superconducting transition temperature (T-c) increases monotonically from 11.7 K to 20.2 K with increasing the hafnium content in metal-nitrogen bilayers from 0 to 1. The upper critical field H-c2(0) for Ba-0.8(NH3)(y)HfNCl is estimated to be about 13.2 T. Accompanied by the remarkably increased T-c, the highest energy phonon mode coupled most strongly with electronic system shows a moderate hardening with Hf substitution for Zr. This result suggests the reinforcement of pairing interaction with Hf substitution arises mainly from the evolution of electronic structure of metal d-band rather than from phonon modes.

Abstract:A quasi-two-dimensional manganese-based compound ThMnSbN is synthesized by the solid-state reaction method. Structural refinement based on X-ray powder diffraction shows that the compound structure belongs to the P4/nmm space group. The lattice parameters are a = 4.1731 Å and c = 9.5160 Å. Electrical transport measurements show that the resistivity of the compound is the lowest in the Mn-based family. When cooling it, its resistivity rises slowly and shows a shoulder-like anomaly at 16 K. Also, the magnetic susceptibility exhibits an anomaly at the very same temperature. Though the specific heat data indicate the inexistence of transition-induced anomaly, the electron specific heat coefficient of γ = 19.7 mJ·mol–1·K–2 is derived by fitting the low-temperature C–T curve. This γ value is much higher than those of the isostructural manganese-based compounds. Thus, the specific heat is consistent with the low resistivity, implying a considerable electronic density of states near the Fermi surface for ThMnSbN. By comparing the crystal structure for a group of ZrCuSiAs-type compounds, various chemical pressure effects of the fluorite-type Th2N2 layer on the conducting layer in different compounds are discussed.

Abstract:We explore the possibility of obtaining new superconductor candidates from functionalized MXene compounds Zr$_2$NS$_2$, Zr$_2$NCl$_2$, and Sc$_2$NCl$_2$ from $\textit{ab initio}$ calculations with density functional theory for superconductors (SCDFT). The predicted superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ at ambient pressure may reach up to 11.23 K (Zr$_2$NS$_2$). Strain-induced $T_c$ enhancement is demonstrated with an example case for Zr$_2$NCl$_2$. We note a correlation between the profiles of superconducting gap $\Delta$ and the electron-phonon coupling $\lambda$ across the Fermi surface for all compounds, which are likely influenced by their modified electronic bandstructure components.

Abstract:The single crystals of the superconducting Li0.2(1)ZrNCl have been derived from the single crystals of β-ZrNCl by intercalation of lithium using an n-butyllithium solution in hexane. The crystal structure has been refined on the basis of the single-crystal X-ray data: the space group R-3m, a=3.591(1)Å, c=27.839(6)Å, Z=6, R1=0.0749 for 196 reflections and 12 variables. β-ZrNCl is isotypic with SmSI, while the structure of Li0.2(1)ZrNCl can be described as the Li intercalated YOF type, a stacking variant of the SmSI type. The tightly bound slabs with a Cl–Zr–N–N–Zr–Cl sequence of close-packed layers are stacked rhombohedrally along the c-axis, with the van der Waals gaps between the chlorine layers hosting Li ions. This is the first single-crystal study on the Li intercalated phase. The structural changes from the pristine single crystals were precisely determined.

Abstract:The superconducting phase Tl2Ba2CuO6 with onset T-C 85K and zero resistivity at 61 K has been prepared. The unit cell is body-centred tetragonal, space group I-4/mmm, lattice parameters a = 3.866(1) angstrom, c = 23.180(3) angstrom. The relation between structural features and its superconductivity was discussed.
Superconductivity in Ternary Zirconium Telluride Zr6MTe2 with 3d Transition Metals

Abstract:We report the synthesis, electronic properties, and electronic states of Zr6MTe2 (M = Cr, Mn, Fe, and Co), which is isostructural to a recently discovered superconductor family Sc6MTe2. Based on the electrical resistivity and heat capacity data measured at low temperatures, Zr6FeTe2 is found to show bulk superconductivity below Tc = 0.76 K. Zr6CoTe2 also exhibited zero resistivity due to superconductivity below 0.13 K. In contrast, Zr6+dMn1-dTe2 does not show superconductivity but instead exhibits strong magnetism, which most likely prevents the formation of superconductivity in this material. The electronic properties and electronic states of Zr6MTe2 are discussed in comparison with those of Sc6MTe2.

Abstract:We designed and investigated a series of ternary hydride compounds MXH$_{12}$ crystallizing in the cubic $Pm\overline{3}m$ structure as potential rare-earth and alkaline-earth superconductors. First-principles calculations were performed on these prospective superconductors across the pressure range of 50-200 GPa, revealing their electronic band structures, phonon dispersions, electron-phonon interactions, and superconducting properties. Several compounds were identified as dynamically stable, with ScYbH$_{12}$ and LuYbH$_{12}$ remaining stable at 70 GPa, and ScLuH$_{12}$ at 100 GPa. Notably, Eliashberg theory and electron-phonon coupling calculations predict CaLuH$_{12}$ to exhibit a remarkable $T_{c}$ of up to 294 K at 180 GPa. These findings unveil ternary hydrides as a promising class of high-temperature superconductors and provide insights for achieving superconductivity at lower or ambient pressures through material design and exploration.

Abstract:The chemical composition, crystal structure, and magnetic properties of a manganese zinc alloy with an ideal composition of YMn2Zn20, which comprises a pyrochlore lattice made of Mn atoms, are reported. The compound is stable only when In or Al is partially substituted for Zn. We have determined the actual chemical formula as YMn2+dZn20-x-dMx, with M = In or Al, and have identified the characteristic preferences with which the incorporated M and excess Mn atoms occupy the three crystallographic sites for Zn atoms. The Mn atoms in the pyrochlore lattice possess small magnetic moments that interact with each other antiferromagnetically but exhibit no long-range order above 0.4 K, probably owing to the geometrical frustration of the pyrochlore lattice. As a result, the effective mass of the conduction electrons is considerably enhanced, as observed in the related pyrochlore-lattice compounds (Y,Sc)Mn2 and LiV2O4. However, the presence of excess Mn atoms with large localized magnetic moments comparable to spin 5/2 tends to mask the inherent magnetism of the pyrochlore Mn atoms. It is suggested that "YMn2Zn18In2" with neither excess Mn atoms nor site disorder would be an ideal compound for further study.

Abstract:Topological antiferromagnetic Mn3Sn crystals exhibit notable magnetic and transport properties, comparable to ferromagnets, and undergo various intriguing magnetic phase transitions during heating or cooling. The spin structures of Mn3Sn crystals are highly influenced by growth conditions and the stoichiometric ratio of Mn and Sn, which in turn affect the phase transition temperature and the transport signatures. In this work, we employed the flux method, carefully controlling factors such as melting temperature, cooling rate, sampling temperature, vacuum, and composition, and fabricated Mn2.991Sn1.009 bulk single crystals successfully. The size of the resulting single crystal after cutting is 6×5×3 mm3. The microstructure, magnetic and transport properties of the prepared single crystals were characterized parallel to and perpendicular to the z-axis. A strong and a weak magnetic phase transitions were observed at 200 K and 280 K, respectively. Our results indicate that the magnetic phase transition of Mn3Sn crystal at 200 K involves a switch in the easy-axis of magnetization from in-plane to out-of-plane, corresponding to the anomalous Hall resistance peak at 200 K. These results show a clear correlation between the spin structure and Berry curvature in Mn3Sn crystals, which significantly affect the magnitude of the anomalous Hall effect.

Abstract:Two new complexes, 1 and 2, with halo acetate ligands have been prepared from the reaction of ClCH2CO2H or BrCH2CO2H with the precursor Mn12Ac, and their structures and magnetic properties studied. The structures of complexes 1 and 2 consist of a central cubane-like [Mn4O4](8+) unit held within a non-planar ring of eight Mn(III) ions by eight mu (3)-O ions, sixteen XCH2CO2- units and four terminal water molecules, as well as included CH2Cl2 and H2O. Different arrangements of the four Mn(III) atoms relative to the eight Mn(III) atoms in the title complexes and other comparable complexes could play a role in the observed magnetic properties. Five and three periodic steps in the magnetic hysteresis loops are observed for both 1 and 2 at 2.2 and 2.6 K, respectively. chi'T-m values for complexes 1 and 2, where chi'(m) is the in-phase component of the AC magnetic susceptibility, exhibit a plateau in the 6-20 K region, below which there is an abrupt decrease in chi'T-m. Their chi'(m) signals measured at different frequencies are observed in the region 2-10 K, and exhibit a frequency dependency on the chi'(m) AC peaks, with a predominant peak in the 4-10 K region. For these complexes, there is a difference between the zero-field-cooled (ZFC) and the field-cooled (FC) magnetization due to slow relaxation of the magnetization.

Abstract:Using Zn(SPhMe-4)2 as precursor, a new thermostable zinc sulfide superlattice [Zn10(μ3-S)4(SPhMe-4)12(DMF)4] (1), was synthesized through diffusion method at room temperature. Compound 1 is built upon a neutral T3 supertetrahedral [Zn10(μ3-S)4(SPhMe-4)12(DMF)4] cluster, which is assembled through weak interactions into a 3-dimensional body-centered cubic superlattice that is chemically stable and free of strong covalent coupling. The four DMF group were located at the tetrahedron corners of the T3 cluster in such a manner that both the local charge balance and global charge compensation could be satisfied. The UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectrum shows that 1 is a wide-gap semiconductor with the band gap of 2.99eV.

Abstract:Here, we have successfully synthesized manganese (Mn) doped cesium zinc chloride (Cs 2 ZnCl 4 ) crystals for the first time by a simple solvothermal method, which alters the optical properties due to the structural transformation. When Mn 2+ feeding ratio x is lower than 0.4, tetrahedral structure of Cs 2 ZnCl 4 crystals is dominant with green emission of Mn 2+ doping, but both tetrahedral and octahedral structure show green-red emission when Mn 2+ feeding ratio exceeds 0.4. Combining experimental analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, different energy transfer pathways and photoluminescence (PL) emission are revealed. When the host lattice crystal field surroundings of tetrahedral coordination, due to the incorporation of Mn 2+ , the exciton relaxes to 4 T 1 and then transitions to 6 A 1 . However, when the host lattice crystal field surroundings have a strong ligand field strength, the excitons are more advantageously confined to the octahedron. Our work provides deeper insights into the structural transformation of zero-dimensional cesium zinc chloride due to the Mn 2+ incorporation from doping to substitution of B site.

Thermodynamic stability and diffusion mechanism of LiMXCl4 superionic conductors

Abstract:LiMXCl4 is a recently discovered lithium superionic conductor reported with a Li conductivity up to 12.4 mS/cm at room temperature. In this work, we explore various types of M-cation and X-anion substitutions in the LiMXCl4 system. We find that fluoro-chlorides may provide promising thermodynamic and electrochemical stability without compromising ionic conductivity. Ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations on seven substitutions and three lithium concentrations for each substitution suggest that even higher conductivity may be achieved in LiMXCl4 than has been reported. A Meyer-Neldel analysis comparing LiMXCl4, close-packed halides, and LaCl3-type systems demonstrates the potential of the LiMXCl4 family due to their high Meyer-Neldel energy, high prefactor, and low activation energy, projecting a range of conductivity of 10-100 mS/cm. An analysis of the correlation between lithium-ion hops and small-angle tilting events finds that LiMXCl4 systems exhibit a strong cradle effect where weakly bound M-octahedra often tilt their orientation in conjunction with a nearby Li-ion hop to flatten the lithium-ion energy landscape. Such an advantage originates from the fact that in the LiMXCl4 structure, one-dimensional M-octahedral chains are bound via weak van der Waals interactions which can accommodate for reduction in free volume via rotational correlation of the octahedra. Our work demonstrates an exciting direction towards further improving this class of materials in terms of ionic conductivity and electrochemical stability and provides a fundamental understanding of the factors that lead to high ionic conductivity in non-close-packed oxyhalide systems.

Abstract:We report on the preparation and the physical properties of superconducting (TaNb)_1-x(ZrHfTi)_x high-entropy alloy films. The films were prepared by means of magnetron sputtering at room temperature, with x ranging from 0 to 1 with an average thickness of 600 - 950 nm. All films crystallize in a pseudo body-centered cubic (BCC) structure. For samples with x < 0.65, the normal-state properties are metallic, while for x > 0.65 the films are weakly insulating. The transition from metallic to weakly insulating occurs right at the near-equimolar stoichiometry. We find all films, except for x = 0 or 1, to become superconducting at low temperatures, and we interpret their superconducting properties within the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) framework. The highest transition temperature T_c = 6.9 K of the solid solution is observed for x = 0.43. The highest upper-critical field B_c2(0) = 11.05 T is found for the near-equimolar ratio x = 0.65, where the mixing entropy is the largest. The superconducting parameters derived for all the films from transport measurements are found to be close to those that are reported for amorphous superconductors. Our results indicate that these films of high-entropy alloys are promising candidates for superconducting device fabrication.
