Abstract:2-[1,3]Dithian/dithiolan-2-ylidene-3-oxo-butanamide 2a/2b were synthesized and investigated in the thioacetalization reaction of aldehydes/ketones 3. The experiments revealed that 2a could be used as a nonthiolic, odorless 1,3-propanedithiol equivalent in the conversion of aldehydes/ketones into the corresponding dithianes 4, however, 2b was less effective. Moreover, the chemoselectivity of the thioacetalization of 3 in the presence of 2a is discussed.

Abstract:Odorless 2-(1,3-dithian-2-ylidene)-3-oxobutanoic acid (1c) was prepared and investigated in the thioacetalization of carbonyl compounds as a 1,3-propanedithiol equivalent. The results showed that the thioacetalization of various carbonyl compounds 2 with 1c proceeded smoothly and afforded the corresponding dithioacetals 3 in high yields (up to 99%) in the presence of acetyl chloride at room or reflux temperatures. Moreover, the thioacetalization exhibited high chemoselectivity between aldehydes and ketones. Abstract:Using -oxo-ketene dithioacetals 1a as odorless thiol equivlents, an efficient and odorless transthioacetalization of acetals 2 has been developed. In the presence of MeCOCl in MeOH, the cleavage of 1a commences to generate thiols at both room and reflux temperatures, and the generated thiols then react with acetals 2 to give correspecting thioacetals 3 in good yield. This transthioacetalization is characterized by mild reaction conditions, simple procedure, good yields, and perfect chemoselectivity. It is noteworthy that only a very faint odor of thiols can be perceived during both the reaction and workup.

Abstract:Two novel, non-thiolic, odorless dithiol equivalents, alpha,alpha-diacetyl cyclic ketene dithioacetals 2a and 2b, had been developed. A range of carbonyl compounds 3 were converted into corresponding dithioacetals, dithianes 4 and dithiolanes 5, in high yields (up to 99%) in the presence of 2a or 2b. Moreover, 2a and 2b show high chemoselectivity between aldehyde and ketone in thioacetalization.

Abstract:4,4-Diethylthio/benzylthio-but-3-en-2-ones 2 were prepared in excellent yields,by the acid-catalyzed deacetylation of 3-(diethylthio/benzylthio) methylene-pentane-2,4-diones (1). With ketene diethylthio/benzylthioacetals (2) as the odorless thiol equivalents, in the presence of acetyl chloride, a series of diethylthio-/dibenzylthioacetals were prepared via the reaction of compound 2 with aldehydes/ketones in methanol under mild conditions.

Abstract:2-[2-Chloro-1-(1-chlorovinyl)allylidene]-1,3-dithiane 1 was synthesized by the chlorination of 3-(1,3)-dithianylidenepentane-2,4-dione 2 using the Vilsmeier-Haack reagent in 99% yield. As a novel nonthiolic, odorless 1,3-propanedithiol equivalent, 1 was investigated in the thioacetalization reaction. Various types of aldehydes and ketones 3 were converted to the corresponding dithianes 4 in the presence of 1 in high yields (79-97%). Moreover, 1 exhibited obvious chemoselectivity between aldehyde and ketone in this thioacetalization reaction. A mechanism for this thioacetalization reaction is proposed.

Abstract:Thioacetals are important compounds because they can be considered as both useful protecting groups of carbonyl compounds in the synthesis of multi-functional complex molecules and acyl carbanion equivalents in C-C bond forming reactions. Since many reactions have been developed to prepare oximes from non carbonyl compounds, to lead to a novel and efficient method for thioacetal preparation, transthioacetalization of oximes has received more and more attention. Unfortunately, the transformation usually suffers from the use of harmful, odorous thiols which can lead to serious safety and environment problems. From the green chemistry point of view, an efficient and odorless transthioacetalization of oximes involving an environment friendly reagent is of great importance and necessity. In this work, using odorless and stable alpha-oxo ketene dithioacetals 1 as thiol equivalents, the thioacetalization reaction of oximes 2 were studied. In the reaction system of MeCOCl-EtOH (95%) or 4-dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid (DBSA)-H2O, the thioacetalization reaction were carried out in reflux temperature. It is noteworthy that the odor of thiols can not be perceived during either the reaction or workup.

Abstract:The synthesis of 2, 4-diisopropyl-5,5-dimethyl-1,3-dioxane through the acetalization of isobutyraldehyde with 2, 2, 4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol (TMPD) catalyzed by the novel carbon based acid was first carried out. High conversion (≥98%) and specific selectivity were obtained using the novel carbon based acid, which kept high activity after it was reused 5 times. Moreover, the catalyst could be used to catalyze the acetalization and ketalization of different aldehydes and ketones with superior yield. The yield of several products was over 90%. The novel heterogeneous catalyst has the distinct advantages of high activity, strikingly simple workup procedure, non-pollution, and reusability, which will contribute to the success of the green process greatly.

Abstract:A series of 2-[bis(alkylthio)methylene]-3-oxo-N-o-tolylbutanamides 1 have been investigated as nonthiolic and odorless thiol equivalents in thia-Michael addition reactions. The cleavage of compounds 1 is initiated by NaOH in EtOH; the in situ generated thiolate anions undergo facile conjugate addition to α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds 2 affording the corresponding β-keto sulfides 3 in very high yields. Meanwhile, 3-oxo-N-o-tolylbutanamide 4, the precursor of compounds 1, can be recovered from the novel thia-Michael addition reactions as a byproduct in good yield.

Abstract:Functionalized ketene dithioacetals are important intermediates in organic synthesis.α-Functionalization reactions based on them provide potential precursors for the construction of usefully carbo-and heterocyclic compounds.In this paper,a versatileα-bromination of functionalized ketene dithioacetals was developed.In the presence of H2 O,the reactions of functionalized ketene dithioacetals(1) with CuBr 2 in THF at room temperature gave variousα-bromo ketene dithioacetals(2) in excellent yields with high regioselectivities.The mechanism of thisα-bromination is proposed to undergo an addition of bromine formed in situ to compound 1 and sequontial elimination of theα-proton.The simplicity of execution,mild conditions,inexpensive,easily usable brominating agent and high yields,make this synthetic method attractive for practical applications.
A New Method for the Synthesis of Α-Acetyl Ketene Dithioacetals

Abstract:The α-acetyl ketene dithioacetals 2, which bear various alkylthio groups, are a kind of important intermediates in organic synthesis. In this paper, dithioacetals 2 were prepared in very high yields (90%—100%) via the deacetylation reaction of the corresponding α,α-diacetyl ketene dithioacetals 1 in the presence of concentrated sulfuric acid. This reaction involves an %in-situ% electrophilic addition-deacetylation mechanism and shows the nucleophilicity of the α-carbon atom in α-oxo ketenedithioacetals. Meanwhile, when the reaction time was prolonged to 22—25 h, the β-keto thiolesters 3a and 3c were produced in good yields.

Abstract:A convenient and efficient protocol for the thiolysis of oxiranes using 2-[bis(alkylthio)methylene]-3-oxo-N-o-tolylbutanamides as thiol equivalents has been developed. Promoted by sodium hydroxide (NaOH) in ethanol at room temperature, the cleavage commences and the generated thiolate anions undergo nucleophilic addition in situ. beta-Hydroxy sulfides were obtained in high yields along with good beta-regioselectivity, and trans P-hydroxy sulfides were also isolated. The thiolysis of one alpha,beta-epoxyketone product with the thiol equivalents was accomplished to afford the corresponding a-carbonyl sulfides in excellent yields. In all the cases, 3-oxo-N-o-tolylbutanamide, the precursor of the thiol equivalents, could be recovered in the novel thiolysis process as a by product in good yield.

Abstract:An organocatalytic enantioselective sulfur‐Michael addition of thioacetic acid to arylmethylidenemalonates was developed with high yields and up to 97% enantiomeric excess. Both enantiomers of the products were accessible with two different organocatalysts. The current method provides the first, practical, and convenient preparation of enantiomerically enriched acetylthiomethylmalonate derivatives.
