Abstract:A facile synthesis of an enantiomerically pure 3,3′-bismorpholinylmethyl H8-BINOL ligand has been developed. This compound in combination with Et2Zn and Ti(OiPr)4 is found to catalyze the highly enantioselective reaction of phenylacetylene with aromatic aldehydes. The enantioselectivity of this catalytic process for the reactions of ortho-substituted benzaldehydes is significantly higher than that based on H8-BINOL.

Abstract:An enantioselective one-pot Michael/Michael/Henry/hemiacetalization reaction between alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes, alpha-ketoamides, and nitroalkenes under mild conditions catalyzed by a diarylprolinol silyl ether has been developed. The sequential methodology provides a direct approach to a wide range of fully substituted chiral oxabicyclo[2.2.2]octanes with seven contiguous stereocenters in moderate to excellent yields (up to 99%), high to excellent diastereoselectivities (up to >25:1 dr), and high to excellent enantioselectivities (up to 99% ee).

Abstract:The BINOL ligand (R)-2 that contains bulky 3,3′-tertiaryalkyl groups shows improved catalytic properties over the previously reported 3,3′-substituted BINOL ligands in the asymmetric alkyne addition to aromatic aldehydes. It catalyzes the phenylacetylene addition to aromatic aldehydes with high enantioselectivity (86–94% ee) and good yields without using Ti(OiPr)4 and a Lewis base additive. The catalytic properties of several analogs of (R)-2 in the asymmetric alkyne addition to aldehydes have also been studied.

Abstract:Efficient one-step syntheses of the bifunctional BINOL and H8BINOL ligands (S)-6 and (S)-8 have been developed from the reaction of BINOL and H8BINOL with morpholinomethanol, respectively. The X-ray analyses of these compounds have revealed their structural similarity and difference. The bifunctional H8BINOL (S)-8 is found to be highly enantioselective for the reaction of diphenylzinc with many aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes and especially is the most enantioselective catalyst for linear aliphatic aldehydes. Unlike other catalysts developed for the diphenylzinc addition which often require the addition of a significant amount of diethylzinc with cooling (or heating) the reaction mixture in order to achieve high enantioselectivity, using (S)-8 needs no additive and gives excellent results at room temperature. (S)-8 in combination with diethylzinc and Ti(OiPr)4 can catalyze the highly enantioselective phenylacetylene addition to aromatic aldehydes. It can also promote the phenylacetylene addition to acetophenone at room temperature though the enantioselectivity is not very high yet. Without using Ti(OiPr)4 and a Lewis base additive, (S)-8 in combination with diethylzinc can catalyze the reaction of methyl propiolate with an aldehyde to form the highly functional γ-hydroxy-α,β-acetylenic esters except that the enantioselectivity is low at this stage. The bifunctional BINOL ligand (S)-6 in combination with Me2AlCl is found to be a highly enantioselective catalyst for the addition of TMSCN to both aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes.

Abstract:A new bifunctional chiral Al(III) complex of BINOL derivative, which contained tert-amine at 3,3′-position of the BINOL, has been developed for the effective enantioselective hydrophosphonylation of aldehydes. A variety of aromatic, heteroaromatic, condensed-ring, α,β-unsaturated, and aliphatic aldehydes were found to be suitable substrates for the reaction, and the desired α-hydroxy phosphonate were obtained in good to excellent yields (up to 99%) with moderate to good enantioselectivities (up to 87% ee) under mild conditions (at 0°C). A possible catalytic cycle based on the experimental results was proposed.

Abstract:An efficient one-step synthesis of the optically active bifunctional BINOL ligand (S)-3 has been developed. It was found that (S)-3 in combination with Me(2)AICI is a highly enantioselective catalyst for the addition of TMSCN to aliphatic aldehydes of diverse structures and is also among the most practical ones. A remarkable positive nonlinear effect was found for this chiral ligand.

Abstract:A series of sulfonamides (2-4) were prepared from natural amino acids and used as additives in the BINOL-Ti(OiPr)(4) catalyzed enantioselective alkynylation of aldehydes. The reactions proceeded smoothly with good yields and very high ee's (up to 99%) in most cases.

Abstract:Three new substituted BINOL ligands (R)-3-[4,6-bis(dimethylamino)-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl]-1,1′-bi-2-naphthol (R)-1, (R)-3,3′-bis[4,6-bis(dimethylamino)-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl]-1,1′-bi-2-naphthol (R)-2 and 2,4-bis(2,2′-dihydroxy-1,1′-binaphthalen-3-yl)-6-(p-tolyl)-1,3,5-triazine (R,R)-3 have been obtained by directed ortho-lithiation or Suzuki cross-coupling process. Ligand (R)-1 shows improved catalytic properties for the asymmetric diethylzinc addition to aromatic aldehydes.

Abstract:The dual Lewis acid/base catalytic system, generated from N-methylimidazole (NMI), (R)-1,1'-bi-2-naphthol [(R)-BINOL], and Ti(OiPr)4, effectively catalyzes the enantioselective alkynylation of aldehydes in the presence of Et2Zn in good yields and excellent enantioselectivities of up to 94% ee at room temperature. The mild reaction conditions make it possible to use functional alkynes in this asymmetric addition.

Abstract:Four analogous binaphthyl compounds (R)-3a-3d containing (R)-3,3'-bis(2-pyridyl) groups were synthesized by the conjugation of (R)-2,2'-dimethoxy-1,1'-binaphthyl-3,3'-diboronic acid [(R)-2] with 2-bromopyridine, 2-bromo-5-methylpyridine, 2-chloro-4-fluoropyridine and 2-chloro-3-(trifluoromethyl)pyridine via Pd-catalyzed Suzuki reactions, respectively. The application of the four chiral ligands in combination with Et2Zn and Ti(Oi-Pr)(4) to the asymmetric addition of phenylacetylene to various aldehydes has been studied. The results show that (R)-3a and (R)-3b are not good catalysts for the alkynylzinc addition to aldehydes, (R)-3d shows good enantioselectivity only for the alkynylzinc addition to aliphatic aldehydes, and (R)-3c exhibits excellent enantioselectivity for phenylethynylzinc addition to both aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes. All the four chiral ligands produced the opposite configuration of the propargylic alcohols to that of the chiral ligands.
