Abstract:The conformationally rigid, nickel(II)-based cationic molecular square [Ni(HL)](4)(4+) and copper(II)-based neutral molecular rectangle [Cu2Cl2L](2) were achieved via self-assembly from novel rigid pentadentate N4S ligand bis[phenyl(2-pyridyl)methanone] thiocarbazone (H2L). Crystal structure analyses show that the tetranuclear nickel(II) cation [Ni(HL)](4)(4+) is located at the inversion center with four nickel atoms in the corners of a square with edge length Ni ... Ni ca. 4.8 Angstrom, each metal center being octahedrally coordinated by sulfur atoms, pyridine nitrogen and carbazone nitrogen atoms from two perpendicular HL- ligands. Relative to the square of metal cations the sulfur atoms are midway between the edges of the square, each being connected to two nickel atoms with the angles Ni-S-Ni ca. 163 degrees. The tetranuclear copper(II) complex [Cu2Cl2L](2) is also located in the inversion center with four copper atoms in the corners of a rectangle. Two edges of the rectangle are Cu-S-Cu bridges with edge length Cu ... Cu of 4.51 Angstrom, the other two edges are double Cu-Cl-Cu bridges with Cu ... Cu distance of 3.41 Angstrom. Each metal center is coordinated in a tetragonal-pyramid with the sulfur atom, pyridine nitrogen atom, carbazone nitrogen atom and one chlorine atom comprising the basal plane, whereas the other chlorine atom of the symmetry-related half of the molecule occupies the apical position. The crystal structure of the free ligand is also reported for comparison.

Abstract:The title compound, [Co4(C4H4O5)4(C7H6N2)8]·20H2O, consists of tetra-nuclear CoII complexes and disordered uncoordinated water mol-ecules. The tetra-meric complex mol-ecule has symmetry. While two benzimidazole mol-ecules and a tridentate malate dianion coordinate a Co II ion, the carboxylate O atom from an adjacent malate dianion bridges the CoII ions to complete a distorted octa-hedral coordination geometry. The tridentate malate dianion chelates the Co II ion, and the chelate six- and five-membered rings show half-chair and envelope configurations, respectively. A face-to-face separation of 3.494 (9) Å between parallel benzimidazole ligands indicates the existence of π-π stacking between adjacent complexes. The crystal structure also involves N - H⋯O and O - H⋯O hydrogen bonds.

Abstract:To investigate the influence of hydrogen bonds and secondary ligands on the structures and properties of the resulting frameworks, five new Co(II) compounds have been synthesized by the reactions of Co(II) salts and 3,5-bis(pyridin-4-ylmethoxy)benzoic acid (HL) with four rationally selected dicarboxylic acid ligands. Without secondary ligand, we got one compound [CoL2(H2O)2]n·2nH2O (1), which possesses a 1D chain structure. In the presence of ancillary ligands, namely, 1,3-adamantanedicarboxylic acid (H2adbc), terephthalic acid (H2tpa), thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylic acid (H2tdc) and 1,4-benzenedithioacetic acid (H2bdtc), four 3D structures [Co2L2(adbc)]n·nH2O (2), [Co2L2(tpa)]n (3), [Co2L2(tdc)]n (4), [Co2L2(bdtc)(H2O)]n (5) were obtained, respectively. It can be observed from the architectures of 1–5 that hydrogen bonds and secondary ligands both have great effects on the spatial connective fashions, resulting in the formation of various dimensional compounds. The XRPD, TGA data of title polymers and the magnetic properties for 2 and 5 have also been investigated.
42 Members New Hydroquinone Bridged Supramolecular Macrocycle and Its Tetra-Nuclear Mixed Ligands Pt(II) Complex: A Synthetic, Structural and Spectroscopic Investigation

Abstract:42 members supramolecular macrocycle (H4M) was synthesized in a simple one-step 2 + 2 condensation of 2,5-diformyl hydroquinone with 4,7,10-trioxa-1,13-tridecanediamine. The macrocycle was isolated in good yield by simple filtration and washing from the final reaction mixture. H4M has multiple salicylaldimine ON-donor sockets in the aromatic salicylaldimine part and six "O" atoms in ethylene glycol chains for transition or alkali metals or other cationic species binding. Preliminarily, this macrocycle was used in the synthesis of trans-tetra-platinum mono-chloride mixed ligand complex (M-4Pt(pyridine)Cl). The UV-vis analysis of this complex showed characteristic absorption around lambda(max) = 593 nm visible region. Similarly a dimetallic quinone bridged control complex L-2Pt(pyridine)Cl bearing two Pt metals was prepared to better understand the structural orientation of the supramolecular macrocyclic complex (M-4Pt(pyridine)Cl). The structure of this control complex was determined by single crystal X-ray. Comparative UV analysis of M-4Pt(pyridine)Cl and L-2Pt (pyridine)Cl showed that the absorption of the same concentration of tetra-metallic macrocyclic complex was more than two times (epsilon = 7.0 x 10(-3)mol(-1) cm(-1)) to that observed for dimetallic control complex epsilon = 3.1 x 10(-3) mol(-1) cm(-1)). The extremely simple productive synthetic and isolation procedure and the presence of multiple donor atoms promises to make this macrocycle an appealing platform in organometallic and supramolecular chemistry.

Abstract:A series of half-sandwich iridium-based complexes bearing 1,4-benzenebis (N,N'-dicyclohexylamidine) (H2L1) or 4,4'-bisphenylbis(N,N'-dicyclohexylamidine) (H2L2) has been synthesized and characterized. Treatment of [Cp*IrCl2](2) (Cp* = eta(5)-pentamethyl-cyclo pentadienyl) with deprotonated H2L1 or H2L2 at low temperature resulted in formation of binuclear complexes [Cp*IrCl](2)(L-1) and [Cp*IrCl](2)(L-2). They were chosen as precursors to construct macrocycles and cages. Tetranuclear metallamacrocycles [(Cp*Ir)(4)(L-1)(2) (pyrazine)(2)][OTf](4) and [(Cp*Ir)(4)(L-2)(2)(pyrazine)(2)][OTf](4) were assembled by the reaction of complex [Cp*IrCl](2) (L-1) or [Cp*IrCl](2)(L-2) with pyrazine after the removal of chloride from the iridium centers with silver salt AgOTf (OTf = O2SCF3). When 2,4,6-tri(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine (tpt) is used instead of pyrazine under the same conditions, hexanuclear metallacages [(Cp*Ir)(6)(L-1)(3)(tpt)(2)][OTf](6) and [(Cp*Ir)(6)(L-2)(3)(tpt)(2)][OTf](6) were formed. Single-crystal X-ray analysis indicated that the cation of complex [(Cp*Ir)(4)(L-1)(2)(pyrazine)(2)][OTf](4) is a rectangular structure, while the cation of complex [(Cp*Ir)(4)(L-2)(2)(pyrazine)(2)][OTf](4) is seriously distorted, nearly to a tetrahedral state. Moreover, complexes [(Cp*Ir)(6)(L-1)(3)(tpt)(2)][OTf](6) and [(Cp*Ir)(6)(L-2)(3)(tpt)(2)][OTf](6) are prism-like cages with large cavity size, which can be prepared in very high yield in the absence of templates. Surprisingly, solutions of multinuclear complexes are very sensitive to carbon monoxide, in which the frameworks were destroyed, giving the binuclear complexes [(Cp*Ir)(2)(CO)(2)(L-1)][OTf](2) and [(Cp*Ir)(2)(CO)(2)(L-2)][OTf](2).

Abstract:A series of [4+2] hexanuclear heterometallic macrocycles, {[Cp*Ir-2(2)(mu-DHNA)](2)[Zn(pyterpy)(2)](2)(OTf)(2)}center dot(OTf)(6) (1a), {[Cp*Ir-2(2)(mu-DHNA)](2)[Zn(pyterpy)(2)](2)}center dot(SbF6)(8) (1a'), {[Cp*Rh-2(2)(mu-DHNA)](2)[Zn(pyterpy)(2)](2)}center dot(OTf)(8) (1b), {[Cp*Ir-2(2)(mu-DHNA)](2)[Ni(pyterpy)(2)](2)(OTf)(2)}center dot(OTf)6 (2a), {[Cp*Rh-2(2)(mu-DHNA)](2)[Ni(pyterpy)(2)](2)}center dot(OTf)(8) (2b), {[Cp*Ir-2(2)(mu-DHNA)](2)[Cu(pyterpy)(2)](2)}center dot(PF6)(4)(OTf)(4) (3a), and {[Cp*Rh-2(2)(mu-DHNA)](2)[Cu(pyterpy)(2)](2)}center dot(PF6)(4)(OTf)(4) (3b), have been constructed by the self-assembly of half-sandwich organometallic units [(Cp*M-2(2)(mu-DHNA)Cl-2] (M = Ir and Rh; Cp* = eta(5)-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl; DHNA = 6,11-dihydroxy-5,12-naphthacenedione) and the metalloligands [M(pyterpy)(2)](2+) (M = Zn, Ni, and Cu; pyterpy = 4'-(4-pyridyl)-2,2':6',2 ''-terpyridine). Confirmed by single-crystal X-ray analysis, complexes 1a-3b display hexanuclear heterometallic macrocycles with two box-like cavities. Interestingly, on the basis of the different combinations of metals, complexes 1a and 2a have the ability to encapsulate two OTf guest anions in the molecular cavities, but differ from that of the other complexes in which all counteranions exist outside the molecular backbones. In addition, the reaction of [Cp*MCl2](2) (M = Ir and Rh) and [Ni(pyterpy)(2)](NO3)(2) leads to the formation of [2+1] trinuclear heterometallic linear molecules {Cp*2Ir2[Ni(pyterpy)(2)]Cl-4}(NO3)(2) (4a) and {Cp*Rh-2(2)[Ni(pyterpy)(2)]Cl-4}(NO3)(2) (4b), which could be used as a kind of precursor.
Rational Design and Self-Assembly of Molecular Squares Featuring Cp*M (M = Rh, Ir) Vertices Bridged by Phenanthroline-Derived Ligands

Abstract:Herein, we describe the design and synthesis of three tetranuclear complexes, [(Cp*Rh)(L-1)](4)(OTf)(4) (la, HL1 = 2-(pyridin-4-yl)-1H-imidazo [4,5-f] [1,10]phenanthroline), [(Cp*Ir)(L-1)](4)(OTf)(4) (1b), and [(Cp*Rh)(L-2)](4)(OTf)(4) (2, HL2 = 2-(4-(pyridin-4-yl)phenyl)-1H-imidazo [4,5-f] [1,10]-phenanthroline). Owing to the precise design of the phenanthroline-derived ligands, these complexes exhibit perfect square shaped structures with side lengths of 13.53, 13.57, and 17.95 angstrom, respectively. These molecules orderly align and assemble into square-shaped, one-dimensional nanotubes. The molecular structures and arrangement of the nanotubes were evidenced by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Solution behavior was studied by NMR spectroscopy. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and elemental analysis were also employed to characterize these complexes.

Abstract:Reactions of the tetrahedral C2Co2 cluster-bridged bipyridine ligand [(4-C5H4NCO2CH2)(2)C2Co2(CO)(6)] (L-a) with [{M(dppb)-(H2O)(2)}(OTf)(2)] (M = Pd, Pt; dppb = 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphanyl)butane; OTf = SO3CF3) and AgX (X = NO3, SbF6) gave cationic metallamacrocycles [(M(dppb)L-a)(2)(OTf)(4)] (1, M = Pd; 2, M = Pt) and [(AgLa)(2)X-2] (3, X = NO3; 4, X = SbF6), Furthermore, the isomeric C2Co2 cluster-bridged bipyridine ligand [(3-C5H4NCO2CH2)(2)C2Co2(CO)(6)] (L-b) reacted with ZnCl2 and AgX (X = PF6, ClO4) to afford cationic macrocycle [((ZnLCl2)-Cl-b)(2)] (5) and coordination polymers [((AgLX)-X-b)(n)] (6, X = PF6; 7, X = ClO4), respectively. Whereas flexible ligand L-a is known, L-b is new and could be prepared by reaction of but-2-yne-1,4-diyl dipyridine-3-carboxylate with [Co-2(CO)(8)]. New self-assembled products 1-7 and ligand L-b were characterized by elemental analysis and spectroscopy, and 1, 3-7, and L-b were additionally characterized by X-ray crystallography. Abstract:The synthesis, characterization, and some reactions of the tetrahedral Co 2 C 2 cluster-bridged bipyridine (4-C 5 H 4 NCO 2 CH 2 ) 2 C 2 Co 2 (CO) 6 (2) and the diarsine-chelated complexes Pd(dpab)Cl 2 (3, dpab = 1,4-bis(diphenylarsino)butane), [Pd(dpab)(H 2 O)(OTf)] [OTf] (4, OTf = SO 3 CF 3 ), Pt(dpab)Cl 2 (5), and [Pt(dpab)(H 2 O) 2 ][OTf] 2 (6) have been investigated. While the bridged bipyridine 2 could be prepared by reaction of 4-pyridinecarboxylic acid 2-butyne-1,4-diyl ester 1 with Co 2 (CO) 8 in 86% yield, the chelated dichloride complexes 3 and 5 were obtained by reaction of K 2 PdCl 4 or (PhCN) 2 PtCl 2 with dpab in 90% and 77% yields. Further reactions of 3 and 5 with silver triflate followed by treatment with water afforded the corresponding chelated aqua/triflate complexes 4 and 6 in 92% and 88% yields. More interestingly, 4 and 6 were found to undergo self-assembly with 2 to give two cationic metallomacrocycles {[M(dpab)]-μ-[(4-C 5 H 4 NCO 2 CH 2 ) 2 C 2 Co 2 (CO) 6 ]} 2 [OTf] 4 (7, M = Pd; 8, M = Pt) in 92% and 85% yields. X-ray crystal structures were determined for the Co 2 C 2 cluster-containing metallomacroycles 7 and 8, as well as bipyridine 2 and complexes 4 and 6.

Abstract:Two types of unprecedented Cp*Rh-based (Cp* = η(5)-C5Me5) complexes, two octadecanuclear macrocycles, and a nonanuclear bowl-shaped complex have been synthesized from two analogous pyridyl-functionalized imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylate ligands, 2-(pyridin-4-yl)-1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylate ligand and 2-(pyridin-3-yl)-1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylate ligand, respectively.
Synthesis and Structure of A 2d Woven Network Structure Supramolecule Complex Containing 72-Membered Macrocycles

Abstract:A new flexible aryl-heterocyclic tripodal ligand: 1,3,5-tris (imidazol-1-ylmethyl)-2, 4, 6-trimethylbenzene (titb) was prepared. The titled complex {[Cu-3(dien)(3)(titb)(2)](ClO4)(6).(CH3CN)(0.5)(H2O)(0.25)}(n), where dien = diethylenetriamine, was synthesised by two different methods. The complex crystallizes in triclinic system, space group Pi with a = 1.363 0(3) nm, b = 1.583 7(2) nm, c = 2.110 5(3) nm, alpha = 70. 860(10)degrees, beta = 86. 700(10)degrees, gamma = 64.900(10)degrees, V = 3.879 7(11) nm(3), Z = 2, D-c = 1.577 g/cm(3), F(000) = 1 905, R = 0.058 6, wR(2) = 0. 135 9, S = 0. 948, Delta rho(max) = 1. 190 x 10(3) e/nm(3), Delta rho(min) = -0. 472 x 10(3) e/nm(3). There are two kinds of conformation of the titb ligand in the structure of the titled complex, one is cis, trans, trans-conformation, the other is cis, cis, cis-conformation. Each [Cu(dien)](2+) unit. binds with two titb ligands to form a two-dimensional woven network structure containing 72-membered macrocycles.

Abstract:A series of binuclear complexes [{Cp*Ir(OOCCH(2)COO)}(2)(pyrazine)] (1b), [{Cp*Ir(OOCCH(2)COO)}(2)(bpy)] (2b; bpy=4,4'-bipyridine), [{Cp*Ir(OOCCH(2)COO)}(2)(bpe)] (3b; bpe=trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene) and tetranuclear metallamacrocycles [{(Cp*Ir)(2)(OOC-C=C-COO)(pyrazine)}(2)] (1c), [{(Cp*Ir)(2)(OOC-C=C-COO)(bpy)}(2)] (2c), [{(Cp*Ir)(2)(OOC-C=C-COO)(bpe)}(2)] (3c), and [{(Cp*Ir)(2)[OOC(H(3)C(6))-N=N-(C(6)H(3))COO](pyrazine)}(2)] (1d), [{(Cp*Ir)(2)[OOC(H(3)C(6))-N=N-(C(6)H(3))COO](bpy)}(2)] (2d), [{(Cp*Ir)(2)[OOC(H(3)C(6))-N=N-(C(6)H(3))COO](bpe)}(2)] (3d) were formed by reactions of 1a-3a {[(Cp*Ir)(2)(pyrazine)Cl(2)] (1a), [(Cp*Ir)(2)(bpy)Cl(2)] (2a), and [(Cp*Ir)(2)(bpe)Cl(2)] (3a)} with malonic acid, fumaric acid, or H(2)ADB (azobenzene-4,4'-chcarboxylic acid), respectively, under mild conditions. The metallamacrocycles were directly self-assembled by activation of C-H bonds from dicarboxylic acids. Interestingly, after exposure to UV/Vis light, 3c was converted to [2+2] cycloaddition complex 4. The molecular structures of 2b, 1c, 1d, and 4 were characterized by single-crystal x-ray crystallography. Nanosized tubular channels, which may play important roles for their stability, were also observed in 1c, 1d, and 4. All complexes were well characterized by (1)H NMR and IR spectroscopy, as well as elemental analysis.

Abstract:A macrocyclic heterodinuclear complex [Cu(II)Mn(II)L(H2O)2](ClO4)2 was synthesized by cyclo-condensation of N,N′-bis(3-formyl-5-n-butylsalicylidene)-ethylenediimine and diethylenetriamine in the presence of Cu2+ and Mn2+. The crystal structure of the complex was determined. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibilities and cyclic voltammograms of the complex were measured. [Cu(II)Mn(II)L(H2O)2](ClO4)2 displays very strong antiferromagnetic exchange and undergoes a one-electron transfer process.

Abstract:A novel class of cyclometalated macrocycles [(Cp*Ir)(2)(R-N=C-C(6)H(2)-C=N-R)(2)](2)(pyrazine)(2)·(OTf)(4) [R = Ph (4a), p-MeOC(6)H(4) (4b), p-MeC(6)H(4) (4c), p-ClC(6)H(4) (4d), Me (4e)]; [(Cp*Rh)(2)(R-N=C-C(6)H(2)-C=N-R)(2)](2)(pyrazine)(2)·(OTf)(4) [R = Ph (4a'), p-MeOC(6)H(4) (4b'), p-MeC(6)H(4) (4c')] and [(Cp*Ir)(2)(R-C=N-C(6)H(4)-N=C-R)(2)](2)(pyrazine)(2)·(OTf)(4) [R = Ph (5a), p-MeOC(6)H(4) (5b)] was stepwise constructed through the double-site C-H activation of aromatic bis-imine substrates. The structures of binuclear complexes and tetranuclear macrocycles were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Isomers were found both in binuclear species and macrocyclic complexes. Flexible substrates led to the existence of isomers for binuclear species, yet gave no isomers after macrocyclic constructions; rigid ones, in contrast, led to isomers only for macrocyclic species. The isomers of tetranuclear macrocycles were thermodynamically stable to reversible transformation on a scale of days. Robust bonding and a certain degree of rigidity were invoked to explain the existence of isomers. This is the first example, to our knowledge, in which coordinated macrocycles containing half-sandwich Cp*M (M = Ir, Rh) fragments have been constructed, without a dynamic reversible process.

Abstract:The controlled synthesis of organometallic supramolecular macrocycles cages remains interesting and challenging work in the field of supramolecular chemistry. Here, two tetranuclear rectangular macrocycles and an octuclear cage were designed and synthesized utilizing a rigid and functionalized pillar linker, 2,6-bis(pyridin-4-yl)-1,7-dihydrobenzo [1,2-d:4,5-d′]diimidazole (BBI4PY) based on three half-sandwich rhodium building blocks bearing different sizes. X-ray crystallography in combination with 1H NMR spectroscopy elucidated that the two building blocks with shorter spacers only result in rectangular macrocycles. However, the building block of bulkier size to avoid the π-π stacking interactions between two ligands BBI4PY led to the formation of an octuclear cage complex. The latter cage contains two types of metal ions, namely Rh3+ and Cu2+, showing significant characteristics of heterogeneous metal-assembling compounds. In addition, the cage accommodates two free isopropyl ether solvent molecules, thus displaying host–guest behavior.

Abstract:The Fe[BF4]2 complex of 2,4-di(pyrazol-1-yl)-6H-1,3,5-triazine (L1) is a high-spin molecular square, [{Fe(L1)}4(μ-L1)4][BF4]8, whose crystals also contain the unusual HPzBF3 (HPz = pyrazole) adduct. Three other 2,4-di(pyrazol-1-yl)-6H-1,3,5-triazine derivatives with different pyrazole substituents (L2-L4) are unstable in the presence of first row transition ions, but form mononuclear, polymeric or molecular square complexes with silver(i). Most of these compounds involve bis-bidentate di(pyrazolyl)triazine coordination, which is unusual for that class of ligand, and the molecular squares encapsulate one or two BF4-, ClO4- or SbF6- ions through combinations of anionπ, AgX and/or C-HX (X = O or F) interactions. Treatment of Fe[NCS]2 or Fe[NCSe]2 with 4,6-di(pyrazol-1-yl)-2H-pyrimidine (L5) or its 2-methyl and 2-amino derivatives (L6 and L7) yields mononuclear [Fe(NCE)2L2] and/or the 1D coordination polymers catena-[Fe(NCE)2(μ-L)] (E = S or Se, L = L5-L7). Alcohol solvates of isomorphous [Fe(NCS)2L2] and [Fe(NCSe)2L2] compounds show different patterns of intermolecular hydrogen bonding, reflecting the acceptor properties of the anion ligands. These iron compounds are all high-spin, although annealing solvated crystals of [Fe(NCSe)2(L5)2] affords a new phase exhibiting an abrupt, low-temperature spin transition. Catena-[Fe(H2O)2(μ-L5)][ClO4]2 is a coordination polymer of alternating cis and trans iron centres.
