Abstract:A liquid crystal (LC) lens of two LC layers is proposed to increase the lens focusing power. The lens structure is developed from the lens of one LC layer with an insulating glass substrate between the electrode and the LC layer reported before. The LC lens preserves the high optical quality and its focal length is electrically tunable. The focusing power of the lens becomes much larger than two times that of the LC lens with one LC layer. The properties of the LC lens are measured and the mechanisms of the power enhancement are discussed.

Abstract:A solid liquid mixed tunable lens with multilayered structure is proposed. The designed lens utilizes a solid-state elastic polymer, optical liquid, and glass as the optical medium, and adjusts the focus by changing the surface curvature of the elastic polymer. The integrated structure of the tunable lens is presented, as well as detailed descriptions of the lens materials, fabrication, and assembling process. Images captured through the tunable lens under different displacement loads are presented, and the relationship among the displacement load, curvature radius, and effective focal length is analyzed. Additionally, the optical property of the tunable lens is simulated using the ZEMAX software. A change in focal length from 14.8 mm to 30 mm is demonstrated within the tiny 0.12 mm variation of the displacement load. Numerical analyses show that the lens distortion is less than 2%, and the modulation transfer function reaches 67 line pairs per mm. The solid liquid mixed tunable lens shows the potential for developing a compact, low-aberration, and stable optical system. (C) 2015 Society of PhotoOptical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE)

Abstract:A bionic optical imaging system with an aspheric solid-liquid mixed variable-focus lens was designed and fabricated. The entire system mainly consisted of a doublet lens, a solid-liquid mixed variable-focus lens, a connecting part, and a CCD imaging device. To mimic the structure of the crystalline lens, the solid-liquid mixed variable-focus lens consisted of a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) lens, a polymethyl methacrylate lens, and the liquid of ethyl silicone oil. By pumping liquid in or out of the cavity using a microinjector, the curvatures of the front and rear surfaces of the PDMS lens were varied, resulting in a change of focal length. The overall structure of the system was presented, as well as a detailed description of the solid-liquid mixed variable-focus lens, material, and fabrication process. Under different injection volumes, the deformation of the PDMS lens was measured and simulated, pictures were captured, and the optical performance was analyzed in simulations and experiments. The focal length of the system ranged from 25.05 to 14.61 mm, and the variation of the diopter was 28.5D, which was larger than that of the human eye. Abstract:A study of the properties of a liquid crystal (LC) lens with a stacked structure of two LC layers is reported. The lens power is approximately twofold larger than that of the LC lens with a single LC layer. The lens exhibits a good ability for focusing incident light beam, and its RMS wavefront error remains small over an entire focus range. With LC layers of 20 µm thickness, the switching times between foci become smaller than 1 s.

The properties of the lens of this kind of electrode structure are discussed. Abstract:This paper proposed a fluidic tunable lens with polymer membrane and multi-flow structure. The designed lens mainly consists of five optical layers including one polymer membrane, two solid layers and two liquid layers. A series of slime hexagonal holes are drilled in the solid layers and the lens holders, allowing the optical liquid flowing among the different layers. The integrated structure of the fluidic lens was presented, as well as the lens composition and fabrication process. The deformation process of the fluidic lens are measured and analyzed, and the optical property are simulated using Zemax software. Images captured through a prototype lens at various rotating angles presents almost identical patterns and the same image quality, showing good stability to gravity. The lens focal length can be adjusted flexibly from 32.3 mm to 14.3 mm under a tiny injection volume of 86.4 uL. Numerical analyses show that the lens distortion is less than 3% and relative illumination is above 0.72. The fluidic tunable lens shows the potential to be used in various compact, low cost and stable optical systems.

Abstract:This work presents the application of an experimental nematic liquid crystal (LC) mixture (1929) in a large aperture lens. The LC material is composed of terphenyl and biphenyl derivatives compounds with an isothiocyanate terminal group and fluorinated lateral substituents. The substitution with a strongly polar isothiocyanate group and an aromatic rigid core provides -electron coupling, providing high birefringence ( at 636 nm and 23 °C) and low viscosity ( = 17.03 mPa s). In addition, it also shows high values of birefringence at near infrared (0.318 at 1550 nm). The synthesis process is simple when comparing materials with high melting temperatures. The excellent properties of this LC mixture are demonstrated in a large aperture LC-tunable lens based on a transmission electrode structure. Thanks to the particular characteristics of this mixture, the optical power is high. The high birefringence makes this LC of specific interest for lenses and optical phase modulators and devices, both in the visible and infrared regions.

Abstract:A two-LC, insulator-layer liquid crystal lens (LCL) is reported. The LCL can focus light waves of arbitrary polarizations and its power changes with applied voltage. The LCL exhibits good optical property. Its use as an image formation lens of variable magnifying power is demonstrated.

Abstract:A liquid crystal lens is a type of optical lens that can be electronically focused without mechanical movement. This paper proposes a large- aperture liquid crystal lens that is divided into multiple Fresnel zones. To guarantee the optical power and response speed, the aperture of the liquid crystal lens is significantly improved to 1 cm. The Fresnel zones are connected and controlled by means of interdigital electrodes, and the driving voltage of each Fresnel zone is the same, which simplifies the driving method. The optical power of the newly proposed Fresnel liquid crystal lens can be controlled between - 1. 62D and +1. 57D via the applied voltage. After the incident plane wave is modulated by the Fresnel liquid crystal lens, the wavefront is close to a parabolic distribution. This lens shows favorable optical characteristics. In this work, the lens is used as a focusing element in an imaging system for demonstration purposes.

Abstract:A liquid crystal lens with focus movable off as well as along the axis is realized. There are two electrodes in the cell: one with a hole, and another with resistance and subelectrodes. The focus can be adjusted along the axis by the applied voltage across the two electrodes, just as that in a conventional liquid crystal lens, and it can also be moved off the axis by the voltage across the subelectrodes. Electrical control of the movements of the focus in the two directions is demonstrated in the paper.

Abstract:A novel doublet liquid variable-focus lens with simple structure was designed and fabricated for spherical aberration correction under the condition of small focal length, which was 11.8 mm to 25 mm. By changing the shape of the two PDMS membranes respectively, the focal length of the proposed lens was changed and the spherical aberration was corrected. The size of the entire lens was very small and overall structure of the proposed lens was presented, as well as the design process. The ZEMAX software was used to optimize the optical parameters of the proposed lens. The deformation of the PDMS membranes was measured and fitted by spherical curve. The longitudinal spherical aberration was measured in experiments and compared with the optimal design results. In order to weaken the gravity effect, we designed the shape of the rear PDMS membrane and presented the detailed description of the fabrication process. (C) 2016 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A liquid crystal (LC) lens prepared using patterned molecular orientations on cell walls is proposed. On each wall, the LC directors in a circular area are aligned to be parallel, while those outside the area are perpendicular, to the wall. A spatially varying director orientation and a lenslike distribution of refractive index may appear in the LC layer. The LC cell then becomes an optical lens even in the absence of any applied voltages. The focal length of the lens is electrically tunable. The size of the lens prepared in this way can become very small.

Abstract:A new driving method for a liquid crystal (LC) lens with a hole-patterned electrode is proposed to increase the range of the variable power of the lens. The optical properties of the LC lens are analyzed by an interferometer, and the combination of the driving parameters including the amplitudes and the frequency of the driving voltages are optimized to extend the focus range and keep the aberration below 0.07 wave. For the LC tens used in the experiment with an aperture of 2.0 mm diameter and an LC (Delta n = 0.2) layer of 15 pm thickness, the focus range is extended from approximately 3.4 to 5.7 diopters. Abstract:A liquid crystal (LC) lens with a laterally shiftable optical axis is proposed and demonstrated. The optical axis of the lens can be driven to shift within the lens aperture without compromising its optical properties. The lens is constructed by two glass substrates with identical interdigitated comb-type finger electrodes on the inner surfaces, and they are oriented at 90° with respect to each other. The distribution of voltage difference between two substrates is determined by eight driving voltages, and is controlled within the linear response region of LC materials, thereby generating a parabolic phase profile. In experiments, an LC lens with an LC layer of 50 µm and an aperture of 2 mm × 2 mm is prepared. The interference fringes and focused spots are recorded and analyzed. As a result, the optical axis can be driven to shift precisely in the lens aperture, and the lens maintains its focusing ability. The experimental results are consistent with the theoretical analysis, and good performance of the LC lens is demonstrated.

Abstract:A liquid crystal lens with stacked structure of two liquid crystal layers is prepared and its numerical and experimental studies are reported. The two liquid crystal layers work together to form an optical lens. The electric field, the molecular reorientation, and the phase retardation induced on an incident light wave are calculated. Experimental results are compared with the calculations. The driving method avoiding disclination occurring is discussed.

Abstract:A bionic variable-focus lens with symmetrical layered structure was designed to mimic the crystalline lens. An optical imaging system based on this lens and with a symmetrical structure that mimics the human eye structure was proposed. The refractive index of the bionic variable-focus lens increases from outside to inside. The two PDMS lenses with a certain thickness were designed to improve the optical performance of the optical imaging system and minimise the gravity effect of liquid. The paper presents the overall structure of the optical imaging system and the detailed description of the bionic variable-focus lens. By pumping liquid in or out of the cavity, the surface curvatures of the rear PDMS lens were varied, resulting in a change in the focal length. The focal length range of the optical imaging system was 20.71–24.87mm. The optical performance of the optical imaging system was evaluated by imaging experiments and analysed by ray tracing simulations. On the basis of test and simulation results, the optical performance of the system was quite satisfactory. Off-axis aberrations were well corrected, and the image quality was greatly improved.

Abstract:A new method of voltage application is proposed to increase the focus range of a liquid crystal lens driven by two voltages. It is possible for the optical power of the liquid crystal lens to change in a wider range, while the root mean square aberration of low level is maintained. The liquid crystal lens is driven by a frequency of the voltages different in positive and negative lens states to obtain its largest optical power in each state. An obvious increase in focus range is realised.

Abstract:A quantitative study of the focus tuning by a liquid crystal lens in an imaging system composed of a camera module and the liquid crystal lens that performs the focusing function is reported. The resolving capability of the imaging system is investigated by analyzing the image of an ISO12233 chart formed by the system. Measurements show that with the focus tuning by the liquid crystal lens, the resolving power of the system can be very close to that of the camera module.
