Abstract:In this paper, we investigate $\cal PT$-symmetric quantum mechanics in the view of superposition and coherence theory. The important connections between the theories are discussed. It is argued that $\cal PT$-symmetric quantum systems are endowed with some stationary superposition or superposition-free property. A physical interpretation of $\eta$-inner product is given, showing the difference between broken and unbroken $\cal PT$-symmetric quantum systems.

Abstract:In this paper we address the question of whether it is possible to obtain evidence that we are in a superposition of different worlds, as suggested by the relative state interpretation of quantum mechanics. We find that it is impossible to find definitive proof, and that if one wishes to retain reliable memories of which world one was in, no evidence at all can be found. We then show that even for completely linear quantum state evolution, there is a test that can be done to tell if you can be placed in a superposition.
A Dynamic Histories Interpretation of Quantum Theory

Abstract:The problem of how to interpret quantum mechanics has persisted for a century. The disconnect between the wavefunction state vector and what is observed in experimental apparati has had no shortage of explanations. But all explanations so far fall short of a compelling and complete interpretation. In this letter, I present a novel interpretation called dynamic histories. I show mathematically how quantum mechanics can be reinterpreted as deterministically evolving dynamical world lines in a 5D universe. Quantum probabilities can be then be reinterpreted as stemming from ignorance of the state of our own world line. Meanwhile, the lack of observed superposition in experimental apparati is explained in that we only live on a single history with a definite set of properties. Hence, superposition is not an actual state of a particle but a model of ignorance as in classical probability theory. This explains nonlocal effects without superluminal communication. I also discuss how this relates to 5D Kaluza-Klein theory.

Abstract:As one of the most intriguing intrinsic properties of the quantum world, quantum superposition provokes great interest in its own generation. Though a universal quantum machine that creates superposition of two arbitrary unknown states has been shown to be physically impossible, a probabilistic protocol exists given that two input states have nonzero overlaps with the referential state. Here we report a probabilistic quantum machine realizing superposition of two arbitrary unknown photonic qubits as long as they have nonzero overlaps with the horizontal polarization state $|H\ensuremath{\rangle}$. A total of 11 different qubit pairs are chosen to test this protocol and we obtain the average fidelity as high as 0.99, which shows the excellent reliability of our realization. This realization may have significant applications in quantum information and quantum computation, e.g., generating nonclassical states and realizing information compression in a quantum computation.

Abstract:One of the key tasks in physics is to perform measurements in order to determine the state of a system. Often, measurements are aimed at determining the values of physical parameters, but one can also ask simpler questions, such as "is the system in state A or state B?". In quantum mechanics, the latter type of measurements can be studied and optimized using the framework of quantum hypothesis testing. In many cases one can explicitly find the optimal measurement in the limit where one has simultaneous access to a large number $n$ of identical copies of the system, and estimate the expected error as $n$ becomes large. Interestingly, error estimates turn out to involve various quantum information theoretic quantities such as relative entropy, thereby giving these quantities operational meaning. In this paper we consider the application of quantum hypothesis testing to quantum many-body systems and quantum field theory. We review some of the necessary background material, and study in some detail the situation where the two states one wants to distinguish are parametrically close. The relevant error estimates involve quantities such as the variance of relative entropy, for which we prove a new inequality. We explore the optimal measurement strategy for spin chains and two-dimensional conformal field theory, focusing on the task of distinguishing reduced density matrices of subsystems. The optimal strategy turns out to be somewhat cumbersome to implement in practice, and we discuss a possible alternative strategy and the corresponding errors.

Abstract:The superposition of states is one of the most fundamental issues in the quantum world. Generally there do not exist physical operations to superpose two unknown random states with nonzero probability. We investigate the superposition problem of unknown qubit states with respect to a known qubit state. It is shown that under trace-nonincreasing completely positive operations the superposable state sets are located in some circles on the Bloch sphere. Meanwhile, we prove that the quantum states in a circle on the Bloch sphere are superposable with respect to a known state. Finally, for the high-dimensional case, we illustrate that any superposition transformation protocols will violate the no-cloning principle for almost all the states. Our results also promote the understanding and applications of the superposition principle in view of quantum no-go theorems.

Questionable and Unquestionable in Quantum Mechanics

Abstract:We derive the basic postulates of quantum physics from a few very simple operational assumptions based exclusively on the relative frequencies of observable events (measurement operations and measurement outcomes). We isolate a notion which can be identified with the system's own state, in the sense that it characterizes the system's probabilistic behavior against all possible measurement operations. We investigate some important features of the possible states of the system. All those investigations remain within the framework of classical Kolmogorovian probability theory, meaning that any physical system (traditionally categorized as classical or quantum) that can be described in operational terms can be described within classical Kolmogorovian probability theory. In the second part of the paper we show that anything that can be described in operational terms can, if we wish, be represented in the Hilbert space quantum mechanical formalism. The outcomes of each measurement can be represented by a system of pairwise orthogonal closed subspaces spanning the entire Hilbert space; the states of the system can be represented by pure state operators, and the probabilities of the outcomes can be reproduced by the usual trace formula. Each real valued quantity can be associated with a suitable self-adjoint operator, such that the possible measurement results are the eigenvalues and the outcome events are represented by the eigenspaces, according to the spectral decomposition of the operator in question. This suggests that the basic postulates of quantum theory are in fact analytic statements: they do not tell us anything about a physical system beyond the fact that the system can be described in operational terms. This is almost true. At the end of the paper we discuss a few subtle points where the representation we obtained is not completely identical with standard quantum mechanics.

Abstract:Abstract The theoretical calculation of quantum mechanics has been accurately verified by experiments, but Copenhagen interpretation with probability is still controversial. To find the source of the probability, we revised the definition of the energy quantum and reconstructed the wave function of the physical particle. Here, we found that the energy quantum ê is 6.62606896 ×10 -34 J instead of hν as proposed by Planck. Additionally, the value of the quality quantum ô is 7.372496 × 10 -51 kg. This discontinuity of energy leads to a periodic non-uniform spatial distribution of the particles that transmit energy. A quantum objective system (QOS) consists of many physical particles whose wave function is the superposition of the wave functions of all physical particles. The probability of quantum mechanics originates from the distribution rate of physical particles in a state in the QOS per unit volume at time t and near position r. Based on the revision of the energy quantum assumption and the origin of the probability, we proposed new certainty and uncertainty relationships, explained the physical mechanism of wave-function collapse and the quantum tunnelling effect, derived the quantum theoretical expression of double-slit and single-slit experiments.

Abstract:A ubiquitous feature of quantum mechanical theories is the existence of states of superposition. This is expected to be no different for a quantum gravity theory. Guided by this consideration and others we consider a framework in which classical reference frames may be in superposition relative to one another. Mirroring standard quantum mechanics we introduce a complex-valued wavefunctional, which takes as input the transformations between the coordinates, $\Psi[x(x')]$, with the interpretation that an interaction between the reference frames may select a particular transformation with probability distribution given by the Born rule - $P[x(x')] = \text{probability distribution functional} \equiv \vert \Psi[x(x')] \vert^2$. The cases of two and three reference frames in superposition are considered explicitly. It is shown that the set of transformations is closed. A rule for transforming wavefunctions from one system to another system in superposition is proposed and consistency with the Schrodinger equation is demonstrated.

Abstract:The questions we raise in this letter are as follows: What is the most general representation of a quantum state at a single point in time? Can we adapt the current formalisms to situations where the order of quantum operations is coherently or incoherently superposed? If so, what are the relations between the state at a given time and the uncertainty in the order of events before and after it? Establishing the relationship between two-state vector formalism and pseudo-density operators, we introduce the notion of a single-time pseudo-state. The tomographic construction of single-time pseudo-states is possible by ideal or weak measurements. We demonstrate that the eigenspectrum obtained from weak measurements enables us to discriminate between some coherent and incoherent superpositions of causal orders in pre- and post-selected systems before the process is completed. Finally, we discuss some possible experimental realizations in existing photonic setups.

On superqubits

Abstract:We first reconsider the mathematical background of superqubit theory and describe important peculiarities of superspaces and supermatrices which are usually out of attention. Then we study states in super Hilbert spaces using super-bra/super-ket formalism in details. The qubit (qudit) and superqubit (superqudit) are defined as linear spans in the corresponding Hilbert subspaces. A new kind of superqubit carring the odd parity is introduced. The multi-superqubit states are studied, and the superconcurrence which distinguishes separable states is proposed.

Abstract:By introducing the concepts of "superclassicality" and "relational causality", it is shown here that the velocity field emerging from an n-slit system can be calculated as an average classical velocity field with suitable weightings per channel. No deviation from classical probability theory is necessary in order to arrive at the resulting probability distributions. In addition, we can directly show that when translating the thus obtained expression for said velocity field into a more familiar quantum language, one immediately derives the basic postulate of the de Broglie-Bohm theory, i.e. the guidance equation, and, as a corollary, the exact expression for the quantum mechanical probability density current. Some other direct consequences of this result will be discussed, such as an explanation of Born's rule and Sorkin's first and higher order sum rules, respectively.

Abstract:Experiments are beginning to probe the interaction of quantum particles with gravitational fields beyond the uniform-field regime. In non-relativistic quantum mechanics, the gravitational field in such experiments can be written as a superposition state. We empirically demonstrate that alternative theories of gravity can avoid gravitational superposition states only by decoupling the gravitational field energy from the quantum particle's time evolution. Furthermore, such theories must specify a preferred quantum reference frame in which the equations of motion are valid. To the extent that these properties are theoretically implausible, recent experiments provide indirect evidence that gravity has quantum features. Proposed experiments with superposed gravitational sources would provide even stronger evidence that gravity is nonclassical.
