Abstract:Oxygen-enriched combustion (OEC) emits large amounts of nitrogen oxides (NO x ) due to high gas temperatures. To reduce such NO x emissions, lean premixed combustion (LPC) is being employed. However, LPC is limited by instabilities such as lean blow-off (LBO), restricting the operational limits of the combustion system. To extend these limits, techniques involving the application of electric fields to flames have garnered attention, yet research on applying electric fields to OEC remains scarce. Therefore, examining the combustion characteristics when electric fields are applied in OEC is crucial. This study investigates the effects of electric fields on the LBO limits, chemiluminescence of OH*, and NO x emissions, following adjustments in the oxygen concentration of the oxidizer to 21%, 30%, and 40%. Applying a positive voltage expanded the LBO limits, although this expansion rate diminished as the oxygen concentration increased. The chemiluminescence of OH* exhibited significant changes in shape and heat release rate upon the application of electric fields. NO x emissions were found to increase with the application of positive voltage and decrease with negative voltage. Furthermore, the expansion of LBO limits through positive voltage application corresponded with a reduction in NO x emissions.
