Abstract:Caspases, both apoptotic and inflammatory, play a huge role in the development and maintenance of body homeostasis. As research on caspase signaling pathways progressed in recent years, a large number of reports of cross interactions between different types of caspases have appeared. For example, the activation of interleukin-1 is initiated by caspase-1 and caspase-8. Programmed cell death is triggered not only in response to the impact of negative factors of the external and internal environment of the body. It is a condition and guarantee of the physiological development and functioning of cells and the organism as a whole. Caspases, which are active participants in this process, perform a complex function of regulating cell homeostasis. The participation of caspases in the development of adaptive processes associated with changes in environmental conditions, for example, with microgravity conditions, has been shown.
The physiological functions of caspases can be established by analyzing the phenotype of knockout laboratory animals, most commonly mice. For example, this method is used to establish the role of caspases in the pathogenesis of various diseases: oncological, autoimmune, infectious, etc. Many researchers suggest using them as therapeutic targets.
In general, the topic of caspases, their functions and role is very extensive. In this review, we have paid attention only to some aspects of the effects of caspases in various types of cell death.
