Abstract:Through silicon vias (TSVs) play an important role as the vertical electrical connections in 3-D stacked integrated circuits. However, the closely clustered TSVs suffer from the crosstalk noise between the neighboring TSVs, and result in the extra delay and the deterioration of signal integrity. For a $3 x 3$ TSV array, the severity of crosstalk noise in the center victim TSV is classified into 11 levels, which is defined as 0C to 10C from low noise to high noise, depending on the combinations of the digital patterns applied to the TSV array. An enhanced code based on the Fibonacci number system (FNS) to suppress the crosstalk noise below 6C level is proposed, in which both the redundancy of numbers and the nonuniqueness of Fibonacci-based binary codeword are utilized to search the proper codeword. Experimental results show that the proposed technique decreases about 22% latency of TSVs comparing with the worst crosstalk cases. This technique is applicable in the large-scale TSV array for it has a quasi-linear hardware overhead, and its system overhead is less than that of the 3-D 4-LAT counterpart if the data width is greater than 18, and it has good usability for it consumes less power per TSV and achieves lower bit error rate at the interested frequency range comparing with that of the original FNS coding technique.
Optimized Differential Space Time Block Code Without Constellation Expansion

Abstract:Using differential transmission method, the space-time block codes (STBC) can be applied in a complicated communication environment without channel state information (CSI). However, since the differential calculation includes multiplications, additions and conjugations, differential space-time block codes (DSTBC) also cause constellation expansion and result in nonlinearity problems in a wireless transmitter. In this paper, we proposed a new double mapping method for the DSTBC. In our proposed scheme, the attribute of pre-transmitted data bits is analyzed, and one of two mappings is chosen to generate current transmitted signal block. The proposed scheme also takes the advantage of differential encoding, and then CSI is not needed at the transmit antennas or at the receive antennas. Furthermore, the proposed DSTBC scheme can achieve full code rate without constellation expansion. Simulation results show that the performance of our proposed DSTBC scheme is close to that of traditional DSTBC scheme at a high SNR environment. Among all of the exited codes without constellation expansion, our proposed DSTBC has the minimum mapping table size and the best performance.

Abstract:The through silicon via (TSV) is one of the important enabling technologies of stacked 3-D ICs. However, the crosstalk is generated when signals are transmitted through the closely clustered TSVs due to the coupling effect. The crosstalk avoidance code (CAC) techniques have attracted great concerns in recent years, for the TSV-to-TSV crosstalk deteriorates the signal integrity. Nevertheless, the CAC techniques usually require specific shape of the TSV array, e.g., $3\times N$ array. This work proposes a crosstalk suppression scheme combining the CAC method and the static shielding technique, named Mosaic-3C1S. The proposed scheme is able to be applied to arbitrary rectangular TSV arrays. In the proposed scheme, the $2\times 2$ TSV subarray, which contains three signal TSVs and one shielding TSV, is used as the basic unit to tile the rectangular TSV array. The CAC method is applied to the signal TSVs in the $2\times 2$ subarrays, and the raw data are transmitted by the rest boundary TSVs, if any. In order to further reduce the bit overhead, a triangular numeral system (TNS)-based CAC, named TNS-CAC, is proposed and applied. The simulation results show that the proposed TNS-CAC has advantages on bit overhead and codec area. The proposed Mosaic-3C1S scheme with TNS-CAC is able to suppress the crosstalk between TSVs to 6C level. The bit overhead of the proposed scheme is between 25% and 45%, which is lower than that of the previous CAC methods for TSV arrays for the most cases.

Abstract:In order to promote the reliability and efficiency of transport block (TB)-based transmission, we propose a new class of spatially coupled Polarization-Adjusted Convolutional (PAC) coding scheme in this paper. In the proposed scheme, several consecutive code blocks (CBs) in each TB are coupled by the register states at the end of the encoding of each CB, and a depth-first successive-cancellation list (SCL)-based decoder is used for decoding. The proposed spatially coupled PAC codes introduce little coding complexity at the encoding side, and the coupling procedure is able to significantly mitigate the TB error rate (TBER), which are validated by extensive simulation results.

Noticeable performance improvement has been observed compared with existing schemes. An interactive detection algorithm is derived. The complexity involved is very low, and increases only linearly with the number of transmit antennas.

Abstract:Increasing interleaving depth can mitigate the impact of long deep fade induced by atmospheric turbulence.A new scheme of a FEC coding with large-depth interleaving was proposed.The transmitter was designed using an m-stage interlaced convolutional coding in combination with byte-wise interleaving;correspondingly the receiver performed word-wise deinterleaving and parallel soft-decision Viterbi decoding based on logarithmic quantization of channel input.Furthermore,a rule of byte combination was analyzed and a new configuration of co-prime byte-wise convolutional in-terleaving was presented.The results show that the new scheme reduces the complexity and the speed requirement of system design.Compared with the optimum threshold detection at a BER of 10?6,coding gains of 6.9dB were achievable by the new scheme at source data rates of 300Mbit/s.The loss with respect to perfect interleaving is only 0.3 dB.Hence,the new scheme is superior in high-data-rate optical wireless communication system.
A Crosstalk Avoidance Scheme Based on Re-Layout of Signal TSV.

Abstract:TSV (Through-silicon Via) is applied to 3D integrated circuits, which meets the demands of high speed and low power consumption. However, high density of TSV implementation exacerbates crosstalk noise which will reduce the transmission reliability. Due to temporal and spatial locality of signal transmission, some signal TSVs can be used for shielding. In this paper, we propose a crosstalk avoidance scheme based on re-layout of signal TSV. Two parameters, crosstalk index and unshielded index, are proposed in this paper to describe the shielding effect of signal TSV re-layout. Both of the indexes are optimized by using non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II ( NSGA-II). We implemented our scheme based on SPEC2006 trace-driven simulation. Result shows that the number of transmission patterns that cause worst crosstalk decreases by 28.8%. And transmission time is reduced by 14.8%. Compared with other algorithms, our work achieves the same or even better results without redundancy TSVs.
A Buffer-Aware Finite Blocklength Coding Scheme for Low-Latency Energy-Efficient Communications.

Abstract:Finite blocklength coding has attracted considerable recent attention because it holds the promise of ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (URLLC) in smart grids, autonomous driving, tele-surgery, and industrial internet of things (IIoT). However, as the instantaneous blocklength is constrained by the number of backlogged bits, short packet transmission with random packet arrival becomes a challenging issue. In this paper, we present a cross-layer mechanism referred to as the buffer-aware variable-blocklength coding to minimize the average delay of bursty traffics. To optimize and analyze the buffer-aware short packet transmission, we formulate a tandem queue model consisting of both the packet queue buffering bits to be encoded and the symbol queue buffering coded symbols to be sent. By deriving the transition probability matrix and the steady state probability of the two-dimensional Markov chain characterizing the tandem queue, we obtain the average latency as a function of the arrival rate and transmission power. Simulation results verify our theoretical analysis and demonstrate the potential of the buffer-aware variable-blocklength coding scheme.

Abstract:Through-silicon vias (TSVs) play an important role as the vertical connections in three dimensional (3D) integrated circuit (IC). However, the 3D IC suffers from the increasing crosstalk noise between TSVs as the working frequency gets higher. The crosstalk in TSV arrays is more complicated than that of 2D IC because more aggressors have to be considered. This paper proposes a crosstalk avoidance method combining the crosstalk avoidance code (CAC) with the shielding wire technique by dividing the TSV array into some 3×3 sub-arrays. This method can suppress the crosstalk in TSV array below 4.5C level, which elevates the performance of 3D IC effectively.

Abstract:An efficient space-time-frequency (STF) coding strategy for multi-input multi-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) systems is presented for high bit rate data transmission over frequency selective fading channels. The proposed scheme is a new approach to space-time-frequency coded OFDM (COFDM) that combines OFDM with space-time coding, linear precoding and adaptive power allocation to provide higher quality of transmission in terms of the bit error rate performance and power efficiency. In addition to exploiting the maximum diversity gain in frequency, time and space, the proposed scheme enjoys high coding advantages and low-complexity decoding. The significant performance improvement of our design is confirmed by corroborating numerical simulations.

Abstract:In this article, we propose a 2 x 2 space-time code (STC) for backscatter communications. The interesting thing is that although the proposed code performs much worse than the classical Alamouti code in conventional channels, it achieves almost the same performance as the Alamouti code in backscatter channels. More importantly, it has a considerably lower tag circuit complexity, which is more preferred in hardware-limited backscatter devices. This article indicates that the sets of "good STCs" for conventional channels and backscatter channels are not heavily overlapped, and there may exist many simpler STCs, which were previously ignored and not reported in conventional channels, have high performance, particularly, in backscatter channels.

Abstract:In the VLSI, the crosstalk is a crucial problem for the circuit performance improvement. Both the crosstalk avoidance code (CAC) and shielding wire technique can effectively eliminate the crosstalk noise. But the CAC consumes too much codec area and codec power with the increase of the bus width, and the shielding wire technique costs too much system overhead. This work tries to combine the CAC technique and the shielding method into a bus partitioning scheme. It can effectively eliminate crosstalk, and simultaneously reduce codec area and codec power, as well as the system overhead. The forbidden pattern free (FPF) CAC, which is based on the Fibonacci Numeral System (FNS), is applied to the partitioned sub-buses. The experimental results show that the codec area and codec power of the partitioned bus are 7.8% and 25.67%, respectively, of the non-partitioned bus in 30-bit bus.

Abstract:Multiple antenna wireless systems can provide larger channel capacity and enable spatial diversity to combat fading. In this paper we conduct an investigation into the design of coded space-time system obtained by serially concatenating channel code module and space-time code module with an interleaver in between. As an example, the system is constructed by employing low decoding complexity turbo-SPC (single parity check) code as outer module and linear complex field space-time code as inner module, which achieves full diversity and lossless equivalent channel capacity. Simulation results prove that our designed system performs well and it only loses 0.8 dB from multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) capacity at BER = 10−5 in the case of information bit length 6048. Compared with turbo code-based systems, it also has lower error floor.
The joint optimization of digital fountain coding in deep space communication

Abstract:Digital fountain codes can be applied into the file delivery in deep space communication for rateless and non-feedback characteristics. However, the code-length and typical sub-optimal algorithm are the two critical factors in deep space environment, which may guarantee the considerable decoding rate with power and buffer-limited equipment. In this study, a novel approach, dependent sequences compensation algorithm (DSCA) is proposed by restricting the randomness of fountain codes with code-length range of 10 3. Additional, the incremental Gaussian elimination to recover the data blocks in stopping set is also initialed. The simulation results show that 99.99% decoding rate with overhead under 0.20 and packet loss rate of 0.5 can be obtained with approach proposed in this study, which also indicate the usefulness of the new approach in the deep space communication systems. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract:Data transmission channel is the most power consumption part in large scale seismic data acquisition system. In this paper, 9B/10B, a high bit rate channel modulation code is introduced. In order to reduce the implementation complexity, a decoder using direct combinational logic expressions is developed. Its performances based on FPGA is discussed, comparing with the traditional 8B/10B code. Finally, Experiment results showed that a maxim 12% power reduction had been made by using this newly developed channel code.

Abstract:A sparse superimposed vector transmission (SSVT) scheme is proposed for short-packet ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (URLLC) in high-mobility scenarios. Unlike conventional pilot-less sparse vector coding (SVC) schemes, a small number of pilots are superimposed on top of data vector in SSVT to track time-varying channels, leading to high spectral efficiency. Two joint channel estimation and data decoding algorithms, called iterative interference cancellation (IIC) and iterative data-aided (IDA), are proposed to recover data from the received signal. The IIC algorithm accurately decodes data by iteratively canceling pilot and data interference, while the IDA algorithm further refines channel estimation by treating previously decoded data as pseudo-pilots. Simulation results show that the proposed SSVT scheme significantly outperforms conventional SVC schemes in terms of block error rate (BLER), and the proposed IIC and IDA algorithms show fast convergence speed.

Abstract:Rapid growth of machine-type communications devices challenges the future network with a significant aggregated data traffic. Distributed source coding is a promising technique that compresses data sources and decreases required aggregated data transmission rate. In this article, we discuss the merits and demerits of deploying distributed source coding in machine-type communications uplink transmissions. We analyze how the decoding delay and storage consumption scale with the number of users and prove that the average decoding delay grows linearly with the user number under some assumptions. A machine-type communications uplink transmission scheme adopting clustered distributed source coding is proposed to balance the compression ratio and decoding delay of distributed source coding where users are divided into independently encoded and decoded clusters. We evaluate three clustering algorithms, grid dividing, Weighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Mean, and K-medoids in our system model. The grid dividing algorithm clusters users based on their locations, while Weighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Mean and K-medoids cluster users using the correlation intensity between them. Our simulation results show that Weighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Mean and K-medoids outperform grid dividing on compression ratio and K-medoids and grid dividing have a more balanced delay distribution among different clusters than Weighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Mean.

Abstract:An effective decoding method was designed for mixed space-time coded system that combines STBC and V-BLAST coding structures.This new method first simply restructures the channel response matrix as well as the vectors of transmit/receive symbols and directly applies V-BLAST zero force detection algorithm afterwards.The simulation results show that this decoding method outperforms the traditional decoding method that using group interference suppression together with STBC and V-BLAST decoding.The advantage grows with the increase of STBC proportion in the transmit structure as well as the increase of receive antennas.
