Abstract:Optical interconnect can achieve a substantial increase in the number of nodes and switching capability for data centers, by virtue of their low power consumption and high bandwidth. In this paper, we propose a single-wavelength switch architecture based on two-stage AWGR for data centers. Then the single-wavelength design is extended to support multi-wavelength, which has higher scalability but lower hardware complexity and power consumption. We prove that the single wavelength architecture is internal strictly non-blocking. When the incoming traffic is externally blocked, a buffer allocation algorithm is designed to allocate feedforward and feedback FDL for the blocked packets. Based on the simulation results, the proposed switch can provide higher throughput, lower average latency, and a 0 out-of-order ratio compared to existing solutions.

Abstract:Optical switching based on arrayed waveguide grating routers (AWGRs) and fast tunable sources is a future-proof solution to overcome the bottleneck of limited bandwidth and high latency of electrical switches-based data center networks (DCNs). To support fine-grained optical packet switching and maintain high network throughputs, tunable sources capable of nanosecond-scale hitless wavelength switching are critical requirements for such fast optically switching networks. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate a fast-tunable source based on a high-density multi-wavelength DFB laser array monolithically integrated with a three-stage Y-branch combiner and an SOA. The DFB laser array has an average 100-GHz channel spacing under the same bias current. The output power of all lasers is above 10 mW, with a uniformity of less than 1 dB. Benefitting from the high-speed dynamic property of the DFB laser and high-speed burst drive pulses controlled by a field-programmable gate array (FPGA), less than 3 ns switching time is achieved by the on-off switching of the DFB laser on arrays, which is independent of tuning range. Furthermore, a 2×2 optical switching prototype based on this demonstrated chip and AWGRs achieves error-free transmission atop 25 Gbps NRZ per link with 12.8 ns end-to-end reconfiguration, which provides a path toward a high-bandwidth, low-latency, and energy-efficient wavelength-switched network for data centers in the post-Moore's Law era.

Abstract:Arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) is a promising technology for constructing high-speed large-capacity WDM switches, because it can switch fast, is scalable to large size and consumes little power. To take the full advantages of high-speed AWG, the routing control of a massive AWG-based switch should be as simple as possible. In this paper, we focus on the self-routing design of AWG-based switches with O(1) constant routing complexity and propose a novel construction of self-routing AWG switches that can guarantee the attractive nonblocking property for both the wavelength-to-wavelength and wavelength-to-fiber request models. It is expected that the proposed construction will be useful for the design and all-optical implementation of future ultra high-speed optical packet/burst switches.

Abstract:Advanced optical switching architectures, capable of scaling to thousands of ports while achieving low communication latency and reduced power consumption, are becoming a dominant theme for interconnection networks in next-generation data centers and high-performance computing systems. The arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) device, with its inherent ability to perform wavelength routing of many wavelengths in parallel, has been recognized as a promising core component for fast optical switching. Although the AWG is energy efficient (as essentially a passive optical device), has high-bandwidth switching capabilities and has relative simplicity and low cost, an inherent characteristic of switching schemes based on the AWG is potential wavelength oversubscription at switch output ports, which can lead to high packet blocking probabilities. To resolve this traffic congestion, this paper proposes a hybrid optical/electronic buffering scheme and a method for efficiently integrating fiber delay line buffer capacity into the AWG wavelength assignment scheme. The dimensioning of the optical and electronic buffer resources is then carried out using simulations. The results indicate that with the proper dimensioning, the hybrid-buffered AWG switch achieves significantly increased overall energy efficiency, compared to electronic-only buffering, while maintaining low latency and non-blocking performance. We also investigate the computational complexity of the required scheduling algorithm in the hybrid-buffered switch, which in turn allows us to estimate the required processing power of the switch controller.

Abstract:Abstract Due to the emergence of high-speed applications, demand for more bandwidth has increased exponentially in last a few years. To serve each user for his demand very fast processing and propagation of data is desired. These two requirements of high-speed communication can be fulfilled using optical fiber technology. In the same view in past many optical switch designs have emerged with their respective advantages and disadvantages. This paper proposes a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM)-based switch incorporating arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) as wavelength router and fiber delay lines (FDL) to create optical buffer. Proposed switch design is compared with recent switch design and it is found that both in terms of BER and packet loss probability the performance of proposed design is much better in comparison to earlier designs.

Abstract:Benefitting from the cost-effective and flexible interconnection between computing nodes and storing infrastructures, various applications and services are deployed in data centers (DCs). These traffic-boosting applications put tremendous pressures on current electrically switched DC networks (DCNs) which suffer the bandwidth bottleneck. Benefitting from the data-rate and format transparency, the optically switched DCN with intrinsic high-bandwidth characteristics is a promising solution to update the hierarchical electrical DCNs with bandwidth limitations. Moreover, the applications deployed in DCNs with mixed traffic characteristics require dynamic quality of service (QoS) provisioning. Optical DCNs thus need to be designed in a flexible topology with the capability of bandwidth reconfigurability to adapt the variety of the traffic. In this paper, we propose and experimentally investigate a reconfigurable optical packet switching DCN named RGAIA, based on flexible top of racks (ToRs) and fast optical switch, where the optical switch is implemented by tunable transceiver combing with arrayed waveguide grating router (AWGR). Under the management of the designed software defined network (SDN) control plane, RGAIA can dynamically distribute the wavelength resource and then reconfigure the bandwidth in real-time based on the monitored traffic characteristics. Experimental assessments validate RGAIA improving performance of 37% and 66% in latency and packet loss, respectively, compared with the network with rigid interconnections at the traffic load of 0.8.

Abstract:A packet contention resolution scheme featuring efficient bandwidth utilization (CRSebu) is proposed for arrayed waveguide grating router (AWGR)-based optical data centers (DCNs). Optical bandwidth can be efficiently provided in this proposed scheme to adapt the burst network traffic by flexibly arranging the timeslot and wavelength. Moreover, the CRSebu scheme implements a “Dislocation Pipeline” strategy to prevent the conventional “Request-Grant” scheduling caused extra traffic waiting delay. Experimental investigations prove the CRSebu scheme can completely prevent packet contention and also improves the network performance in terms of packet loss and server-to-server latency due to the high bandwidth utilization. Numerical assessments also validate the excellent scalability of this proposed contention resolution scheme in large-scale AWGR-based DCNs. Compared with the typical OPSquare structure deploying an Optical Flow Control scheme to prevent packet contention, the CRSebu-equipped optical DCN eliminates the retransmission of conflicted packets, which significantly improves the network performance. Experimental investigations prove the proposed CRSebu strategy can completely prevent packet contention. Numerical assessments show that the network deployed with the CRSebu scheme decreases 73.6% packet loss, and 11.9% server-to-server latency compared with the static scheme.
Low-latency Wavelength-Switched Clock-Synchronized Intra-Data Center Interconnects Enabled by Hollow Core Fiber

Abstract:Fast (nanoseconds) optical wavelength switching is emerging as a viable solution to scaling the size and capacity of intra-data center interconnection. A key enabling technology for such systems is low-jitter optical clock synchronization, which enables sub-nanosecond clock and data recovery for optically switched frames using low-cost methods such as clock phase caching. We propose and demonstrate real-time low-latency wavelength-switched clock-synchronized intra-data center interconnection at 51.2 GBd using a fast tunable laser (with ns scale switching time) and ultra-stable-latency hollow core fiber (HCF) for optically-switched data center networks. For wavelength-switched systems, we achieve a physical layer latency below 46 ns, consisting of 28 ns transceiver latency and a 18 ns inter-packet gap. Finally, we show that by exploiting the low chromatic dispersion and thermally-stable latency features of HCF, active clock phase tracking can be entirely eliminated.

Abstract:A novel hybrid switching architecture using optical circuit switching for intra-subnet communication and fiber channel (FC) for inter-subnet communication is proposed. The proposed scheme utilizes small-size arrayed waveguide grating routers (AWGRs) and legacy FC switches to construct the large-scale avionic network, thus has the potential of the lower latency, the satisfactory network bandwidth and the lower power consumption. The simulation results verify that the proposed architecture outperforms FC switched architecture in terms of real time performance and power consumption.

Abstract:Optical packet switching (OPS) networks are emerging as a promising solution to overcome the inherent bandwidth limitations of electrical switches in data center networks. However, the practical deployment of nanosecond OPS networks remains a significant challenge due to the lack of efficient optical switch control mechanisms and the difficulty in implementing efficient and fast clock and data recovery (CDR) circuits. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate a non-centralized congestion control for the phase-caching OPS network. The OPS network comprises four scheduled tunable lasers, an arrayed waveguide grating router (AWGR), and four FPGA-based transceivers. By tuning the four wavelengths in a fixed order, each node communicates with the other four nodes equally and cyclically, ensuring contention-free transmission with equal bandwidth. To maximize the utilization of interconnection bandwidth, high-traffic pairs can exploit low-traffic nodes as intermediate nodes to forward the packets. In the 20.4Gbps transmission test, the four-node OPS network achieved a remarkable 12.8ns end-to-end configuration, with a bit-error rate of 9.8E-10.

Abstract:We consider differentiated time-critical task scheduling in an N X N optical packet switch to ensure 100% throughput and meet different delay requirements among various modules of data center networks (DCNs). Existing algorithms assume that each input-output connection has the same delay bound, which cannot satisfy users' differentiated QoS requirements. To make up this deficiency, we propose a new scheduling scheme to meet the delay requirements in a best-effort manner. Moreover, a speedup is considered to compensate for both the reconfiguration overhead and the unavoidable slots wastage in the switch fabric. With traffic matrix and delay constraint matrix given, this paper proposes an algorithm SDF (Strict Delay First) to realize the packet switching, while minimizing the required speedup. The performance of our scheme is verified by extensive numerical simulations.

Abstract:Data centers have to sustain the rapid growth of data traffic due to the increasing demand of band-width-hungry Internet services. The current fat tree topology causes communication bottlenecks in the server interaction process, resulting in power-hungry O-E-O conversions that limit the minimum latency and the power efficiency of these systems. As a result, recent efforts have advocated that all optical data center networks (DCNs) have the capability to adapt to traffic requirements on demand. We present the design, implementation, and evaluation of a cascaded microelectromechanical systems switches-based DCN architecture which dynamically changes its topology and link capacities, thereby achieving unprecedented flexibility to adapt to dynamic traffic patterns. We analyze it under a data center traffic model to determine its suitability for this type of environment. The proposed architecture can be scaled to 3300 input/output ports by available experimental components with low blocking probability and latency. The blocking probability and latency are about 0.03 and 72 ms at a moderate traffic load for 32 input/output ports based on our numerical results, which are much smaller than the results for 4 input/output ports which are 0.13 and 235 ms, respectively. Abstract:Abstract Optical packet switching (OPS) is an emerging area of research in next-generation datacenter applications. There is an exponential growth in the internet traffic due to applications such as social networking, cloud computing, video streaming, etc. Fiber optical network plays a critical role in various data center (DC) operations. Large bandwidth of the optical fiber made OPS, a promising technology for DCs. Arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs) are used more frequently in the core of optical packet switches due to its low insertion loss and wavelength dependent routing pattern. Optical switching function can be performed by AWG if each input port is properly equipped with Tunable wavelength converters (TWCs). This paper presents analysis of four optical packet switches namely AWG and Feedback Loop Buffer based switch, AWG and Electronic Memory based switch, Petabit Optical Switch, AWG and Feedback Loop Buffer Loss Compensated based Switch. Switches are analyzed for Bit Error Rate (BER) and energy consumption. The power and noise analysis is performed for calculating the total power required for correct operation of switch and to determine the BER using physical layer analysis. Minimum power level is determined so that received bits are decoded correctly. Energy consumption per bit is also evaluated to identify architecture consuming less energy in the considered architectures.

Abstract:Arrayed Waveguide Grating Router (AWGR) is currently one of the most promising components in data center interconnections for its passive and non-blocking feature. However, the scalability is restricted by the limited channel count. In this paper, by using multiple free spectral ranges (FSRs) of AWGR and couplers, we report a novel data center architecture with extended frequency range. By simulation, we prove that, with limited FSRs, tens of thousands port count data center can be realized using a single 32 x 32 AWGR with less than 1 ms average delay and less than 0.1% blocking rate.

Abstract:In this article we report the system structure and test results of an experimental optical burst switching network with three edge routers and one core node. Wavelength-selective switches developed for this system and their characteristics are depicted. The implementation and performance of our new scheme for the Just-in-Time protocol are described. We also report experimental results of FTP and VOD services on this system. Some parameters, including traffic rate, average burst data length, and assembly time, are studied.

Abstract:In order to decrease the blocking probability of fast light-path set-up in the network, a novel strategy for optical flow switching is proposed, named dynamically initialized wavelength number protocol (DIWP), which can dynamically change the initialized wavelength number according to the traffic load of the network. Computer simulations are conducted to analyze the performance of the proposed strategy, which is based on forward reservation backward release (FRBR) mechanism. The results show that the initialized wavelength number can affect the blocking probability of the network.

Abstract:Relying on the flexible-access interconnects to the scalable storage and compute resources, data centers deliver critical communications connectivity among numerous servers to support the housed applications and services. To provide the high-speeds and long-distance communications, the data centers have turned to fiber interconnections. With the stringently increased traffic volume, the data centers are then expected to further deploy the optical switches into the systems infrastructure to implement the full optical switching. This paper first summarizes the topologies and traffic characteristics in data centers and analyzes the reasons and importance of moving to optical switching. Recent techniques related to the optical switching, and main challenges limiting the practical deployments of optical switches in data centers are also summarized and reported.

Abstract:Optical packet switching (OPS) is a rapidly growing research field for next-generation data transmission. The core router/switch performs an essential role in packet routing and buffering in OPS. Due to cyclic nature and low insertion loss, Arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) is more commonly used in optical switches. When the switch is placed in the network, there is a need to add or drop packets to allow the optical network system to have greater connectivity and flexibility. In high-bit-rate optical networks, all-optical add-drop switches are a necessary element. An add-drop optical packet switch architecture based on AWG is proposed in this paper. For buffering contending packets, optical buffering using Fiber Delay Lines (FDLs) is used. The performance of the proposed add-drop switch is evaluated in terms of bit error rate (BER). For acceptable limits of BER (BER ≤ 10–9 and BER ≤ 10–12), the minimum power needed for proper switch operation is determined. Finally, the performance of the switch is evaluated for the network layer parameter, i.e., in terms of packet loss probability (PLP). The proposed add-drop switch is also compared with the recently published design to show its advantage over the published design.
