Abstract:Steering the kinetics of photoexcited electron-hole pairs to achieve the elongated lifetime of carrier is one of key strategies to enhance the photocatalytic performance. Here, -OH terminated MXene and N-doped carbon dots (NCDs) are exploited as a hole mediator and electron acceptor, respectively, to enhance the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanosheets by optimizing the charge kinetics. The photogenerated hole and electron of TiO2 transferred to Ti3C2Tx and NCDs in the ternary NCDs/TiO2@Ti3C2Tx photocatalyst, respectively, resulting in effective separation of the photoinduced carriers. The photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) degradation of NCDs/TiO2@Ti3C2Tx are ~ 4 and 9 times higher than those of TiO2, respectively. The DFT calculation shows that the Ti3C2Tx MXene with -OH termination has a low work function (Φ = 1.887 eV). The results of charge transfer dynamics and DFT calculation reveal that the photocatalytic enhancement of NCDs/TiO2@Ti3C2Tx is dominantly attributed to the synergistic effects of optimized charge kinetics, minimized interfacial defects, improved conductivity of Ti3C2Tx MXene, and strengthened up-conversion PL capability of NCDs. Our finding demonstrates that steering the interfacial charge kinetics is an effective way to improve the photocatalytic performance, which may be generally applicable in the photocatalysis.
