Abstract:This work utilizes the advantages produced when combining aggregation-induced emission in aqueous medium with macrocyclic amphiphiles that can noncovalently incorporate donor/acceptor pairs. A novel FRET system was assembled by using tetraphenylethylene-functionalized cucurbit[7]uril (TPE-Q[7]) as a macrocyclic amphiphile platform imparting energy transfer, with tetraphenylethylene (TPE) as the donor luminophore, and rhodamine (RhB) as the acceptor luminophore. The energy-transfer efficiency of this system was 68% when TPE-[Q7]:RhB 1/4 1:1 in an aqueous solution, and the antenna effect of the TPE-[Q7] on RhB was calculated to be 8.36. Given the dynamic nature of the noncovalent interaction, delicately varying the molar ratio between the donor and acceptor allowed for fine tuning of the FRET process in aqueous medium, which achieved a high efficiency multicolor emission of the visible spectrum including white. Results of this study are promising for creating new tunable luminescent white-light-emitting materials in the future based on appropriate selection of donor-acceptor pairs in FRET.
