Abstract:Two-phase closed thermosyphon (TPCT) has been widely used to preserve permafrost subgrade of infrastructure in permafrost regions. However, cracks often occur on the road surfaces of the embankments installed with TPCTs, this is mainly due to the differential frost heave around the TPCT caused by the lateral geotemperature difference, which poses a threat to the stability of the engineering. Aiming at this problem, a novel horizontal TPCT (HTPCT) technology is proposed. A field experiment of a full-scale simulated embankment was first time carried out based on the HTPCT. The results indicated that the heat transfer characteristics of the HTPCT are mainly affected by the ambient temperature. During the cold period, the evaporator section of the HTPCT works in the whole section to cool the embankment along the horizontal direction. During the warm period, the evaporator section mainly cooled the soil near the slope toe of the embankment. Compared with the contrast site, under the cooling effect of the HTCPTs, the average temperature of soil below −0.5 m depth of the pavement is reduced by 1.61 °C, and the maximum and minimum temperature differences at the same depth inside the embankment are 0.9 °C and 0.09 °C. The maximum cooling capacity of HTPCT during the cold period (from December 27, 2019 to February 22, 2020) is about −188 MJ, and the average power is about 37.51 W. Finally, the applicability of HTPCT in permafrost regions is discussed. The results of the research could provide a novel idea for embankment protection in permafrost regions.
